Sims officially named Berkeley coach

As most who follow the blog regulary have speculated and known for days, Fred Sims has been named the new Berkeley High head football coach. More to come after speaking with Sims, but here’s a brief write up.

Fred Sims, a two-time North Coast Section championship winning coach at St. Elizabeth High, was officially announced Tuesday as the new head football coach at Berkeley.
Sims replaces Alonzo Carter, who left after three seasons with the Yellowjackets to take over at Contra Costa College.
Sims, a former Cal wide receiver from 1991-95, went 64-46 in 10 years at St. Elizabeth and reached the NCS playoffs seven times.
He led the Mustangs to last year’s NCS Division V title despite playing with as few as 15 players. He also led St. Elizabeth to the 2007 NCS Class B crown and has taken the Mustangs to the past three NCS title games and four overall.
Sims makes the jump from a Division V school with a listed enrollment for 2010 of 199 students to a Division I school in Berkeley that, with an enrollment of 3,461, is the second largest in the NCS to James Logan.
Berkeley won at least a share of the Alameda Contra Costa Athletic League title in each of Carter’s three seasons. The Yellowjackets’ 38-3 NCS first-round playoff win over San Leandro last year was the school’s first playoff win since 1996.

A BIG CONGRATS to Coach Sims. Berkeley High is getting a coach that truly knows the game of football and will maximize the most out of his players. Look for BHS to make some noise in 2010.

Hey anyone know who will take over for him at St. Liz? Whoever it is they will have huge shoes to fill. Coach Sims did a wonderful job there and made the best of his talent. He had up and down years but he kept a positive outlook and remained loyal to the school. Plus he was able to win NCS 2 or 3 times, thats is impressive. Not sure if he ever had a team with more than 25 players, even played with less than 20 some years. He will do great at Berkeley.

hey spartan fan thats the goal, to play green machine, if ur not trying to win a championship we play the game

  • bhsfan

Hey does anyone know who will take over for Coach Sims at St.Liz? Well whoever it is, they have some big shoes to fill. Sims did an awesome job there and made the most of what he had. he made them winners and perservered through the up and down seasons and still went to championship games and won. HE is a great coach and i know he will do great things at Berkeley. And it will not take him long at all.

    Coach Sims,

Very few people will ever realize what you did at St. Liz except those that were there. The fact that you were able to do so much with the kids that attended probably the smallest HS in the bay area was incredible. I along with my family have always been a fan and a supporter of your efforts. The Wallace Family wishes you well and hope nothing but the best for you and the YellowJackets!!!

lol didn’t take long for the berkeley hype to start up again. Sims is a great coach and should have them ready, but I think that NCS D1 is going to be much deeper this year then it was last year. Have the Yellowjackets finalized a preseason schedule?

  • bhsfan

might b in search of a week 2 game

  • renegades10

who is on the schedule so far?

  • berkeley high football

Fred Sims is going to be a great coach for the jackets and yes he will have them ready

  • NBV-707

    Prepfan and Bhsfan,
Perhaps Berkeley High School can schedule Vacaville High School of the Monticello Empire League/Sac Joaquin Section? Perhaps a Week 1 for them and Week 2 for Berkeley? There seasons are different. Alaways good to schedule intersectional games from other powerhouse teams.

Can it be concluded tha B-High underachieved last year? LAst years team was suppose to be loaded.
