East Bay Boys Volleyball Notes: Playoff Time
By Matt Smith
Monday, May 17th, 2010 at 9:45 am in Boys volleyball.
Here is a playoff breakdown
Division I
No. 1 Amador Valley vs. No. 8 Logan
No. 4 Deer Valley vs. No. 5 California
No. 2 Foothill vs. No. 7 Washington
No. 3 Mission San Jose vs. No. 6 De La Salle
Thoughts: The marquee matchup, to me, in the first round is Mission San Jose vs. De La Salle. The Spartans are extremely talented, but inconsistent. The Warriors are tough at home, and were the No. 3 seed last year when they reached the championship match.
I think the team to watch out for is Cal. Winners of four straight after a three-game skid, including a win over DLS. The Grizzlies also have a tournament loss against Deer Valley as motivation.
Of course the bracket is setup for a Amador Valley vs. Foothill rematch, and it would be a great match if it were to happen. Don’t get too far ahead because there are some good teams here.
Division II
No. 1 Campolindo vs. No. 8 Novato
No. 4 Alameda vs. No. 5 Terra Linda
No. 2 Northgate vs. No. 7 Clayton Valley
No. 3 Drake vs. No. 6 Las Lomas
Thoughts: Everyone is expecting a Campolindo and Northgate final, and it would be a surprise if it didn’t happen. A potential Drake vs. Northgate semifinal could be a good matchup, but of course both teams need to get there. I think the Alameda and Terra Linda match will be the most entertaining first round game.
Division III
No. 1 College Prep vs. No. 8 De Anza
No. 4 Berean Christian vs. No. 5 Marin Catholic
No. 2 El Molino vs. No. 7 Dougherty Valley
No. 3 St. Patrick-St. Vincent vs. No. 6 Head Royce
Thoughts: College Prep getting the No. 1 seed is huge, and if it is a rematch in the finals with El Molino, it won’t have to travel this year. Berean Christian will be a dangerous second round matchup for College Prep, if that is indeed how it plays out. I think the St. Pat’s and Head-Royce match is the most compelling to me in the first round. HR is very talented and could make a run.
Rankings
Amador Valley heads into the playoffs as the new No. 1 team. It’s the first time anyone but Foothill has been ranked No. 1 in this poll since March of 2009.
Cal gets a big bump after another win over De La Salle.
1. Amador Valley
2. Foothill
3. Campolindo
4. Northgate
5. Mission San Jose
6. Deer Valley
7. California
8. De La Salle
9. Washington
10. Logan

Matt,
Why isn’t there any baseball/softball notes on this website? Please pass along to whoever might post.
Thanks

Softball Fan,
I posted the same thing on the East Bay Prep Facebook page. Volleyball, Lacrosse, but no baseball or softball? What gives?

The primary reason you don’t see as much baseball/softball posts on the blog is because those sports receive a lot of coverage in the paper. But thanks for the feedback. We’ll try to add some more baseball/softball stuff to the blog.
