Football: Recruiting updates

As most high school football fans know, the recruiting season for the 2011 (and beyond) class is well underway. Last weekend featured the EA Sports Elite 11 camp at Cal and Nike camps at Stanford and Laney College. Here are a couple links to whet your appetite for the football season to come.

Now, for a little original news. I’ve heard from a couple potential 2011 recruits in the past few weeks, so here’s an update on their progress.

  • El Cerrito LB Lyonel Louis has received offers from Arizona and Utah State, according to EC coach Kenny Kahn. I haven’t seen a ton on Louis on the internet yet, but you should start seeing that buzz develop soon. During basketball season he was listed at 6 foot 2, 225 pounds and I can personally attest that he looked like a football player masquerading as a low-post presence.
  • Concord QB Ricky Lloyd has two offers — Louisiana Tech and Southern Mississippi — under his belt as he gets ready for the summer. I’ve spoken with a couple scouts that think Lloyd’s stock is only going to go up in what looks like a relatively down 2011 class for QB talent in the East Bay.
  • I’ve been thinking about next year’s top talent and I”ve come to the conclusion that this has the potential to be a real top year in terms of line talent. On offense, you’ve got guys like Monte Vista’s Jacob Welter, Berkeley’s Isaiah Henderson and Encinal’s Josh Morrow that should all be top recruits. On defense, you’ve got guys like De La Salle’s Dylan Wynn that are really going to be impact players. Talent-wise, I think the 2011 class could be pretty deep.
  • This doesn’t have anything to do with East Bay recruiting, but I saw that Crenshaw’s DeAnthony Thomas committed to USC today. That guy’s gonna be a star.

I’ll try to keep the conversation going throughout the summer, particularly once we get done with the spring season. I know you guys are clamoring for a forum, so have at it.

a kid named Paul Okamura. saw him at the under armour last year. all i know is he is from alameda

  • East Bay FB Coach

Who does everyone think is the best college O/D player in each league? What about best high school player in each league? Are there any leagues where those are different?

  • Billjohnson….Paul Okamura is from Alameda , Encinal High. Clocked a 4.54 40yd @ the Under Armour Combine last year. Plays wr/safety, and was pretty productive last year, a definate deep threat. He can also play some rb in their dbl wing . He’s a really good all around athlete , I’ve known him and his family since little league days…

In the EBAL the best offensive player this year coming back is probably Bryce McGovern of Monte Vista. You never know who will step up when the season starts but he is definitely the top playmaker coming back on offense. Cameron Rowland of Foothill is up there too but will be interesting to see how they both do with new qb’s.

The best defensive player is a tossup between Renaud and Wynn.

The offensive player with the most college potential is probably G. Atkinson III. Now so far I have not been impressed with him at all as a football player because he shys away from contact, but he and his brother may be two of the most impressive athletes to come out of the EBAL in some time. He has a ton of upside and if he can learn that football is a contact sport he could be a great player.

The defensive player with the most college potential is a tough call. I think Wynn and Renaud will both be good college players, but to be great depends on some things for them including how much weight they can hold, if they can get a little quicker, etc. J. Atkinson is a freak athlete like his brother and with his speed and size he could be one of the top corners in the state this year.

A sleeper people should watch out for is Damariay Drew. He is an rb/db out of Livermore and with a new coach he should see more touches. He is a good athlete and he may very well have a good year.

Again these are all returners. Who knows what new guys will step up this year? The EBAL has several young qb’s all of whom will be d-1 players. My Spartans have several rising juniors who started last year and a rising soph who may be the next DJ/Kevin Simon at least as an LB.

  • the bird eye

Don’t forget Miramonte’s Ross Dolbec. Left Tackle was mentioned in both the Rise coverage of the Oakland Nike Combine and the Palo Alto Nike Camp. 1 on 1 video from Palo Nike Camp: http://rivals.yahoo.com/video/recruiting-football/AMP-Palo-Alto-NIKE-OL-vs-DL-part-2-316290;_ylt=Ak.wRKpagPzs_b.xcf8Cjz5HPZB4 , finished #2 OL behind Jordan Rigsbee.

  • Has it been reported on these blogs that Ken Peralta has stepped down as Head Coach?? What kind of effect is that gonna have on the defending champs?
