DLS DB Tyler Anderson headed to OSU
By Ben Enos
Monday, May 24th, 2010 at 2:48 pm in East Bay Football.
De La Salle cornerback Tyler Anderson, who shared the load at running back with Terron Ward last season, has accepted an offer to join Oregon State’s football team as a preferred walk-on for the 2011 season.
“I took my visit to Oregon State and just loved the coaches and what they’re all about,” Anderson said. “They’re really family oriented. It reminds me of what I went through at De La Salle.”
Anderson was previously planning to go to Cal as a walk-on, and was also considering preferred walk-on offers from Washington and Boise State. He said the Beavers will look to play him at either cornerback or safety.
He’ll be joined in Corvallis by Ward, who committed in February as a gray-shirt enrollee.

Way to go TA….you earned it.
May 24th, 2010 at 6:15 pm
as if oregon state isn’t already going to be beast enough… now they got ward, anderson, mannion…
May 24th, 2010 at 9:41 pm
Great news….Do not be surprised when you see Ward and Anderson in the basckfield together at OSU
May 24th, 2010 at 10:43 pm
yes good for him he earned this. both him and terron were very underrated and i am hoping they will make opposing coaches in the pac-10 wonder why they didn’t get these guys. mike riley got some steals and he may have stolen the DLS pipeline from the Ducks with these moves.
May 25th, 2010 at 7:06 am
i just wish cal would have gotten him though… and that cal will get dano graves from folsom
May 25th, 2010 at 12:02 pm
i agree he was very underated…although i don’t see him playing RB…he will be a DB at the next level and a heck of one at that…sometimes the DLS individuals don’t get as much respect as they should because the great team atmosphere and accolades outway the individuals…
May 25th, 2010 at 1:26 pm
he was offered as a db
May 25th, 2010 at 5:14 pm
What is the difference between being a walk-on (at Cal) and a “preferred” walk-on (at OSU)? Are preferred walk-ons guaranteed anything? Do they get first crack at scholarships that become open? Or does it mean they’ll make the team unless they do something stupid while a walk-on is more of a gamble?
May 25th, 2010 at 5:45 pm
I believe for D1 purposes a preferred walk-on generally means the team officials work with admissions to help the athlete get admitted, then they have a spot after the 85 up to about 105 players, for camp. You come in to camp like ‘scholarship’ed player and get to try for a roster spot. A walk-on can still fight for a spot but without those perks? Many times good showing by either type can result in scholarship. Preferred basically means we really like you but we’re basically out of money spots right now based on what offered vs. accepted, etc. Go Beavs!
May 25th, 2010 at 11:50 pm
MOW – thanks for clarifying the preferred walk on status…I always wondered about that…Tyler A is a good kid with a great work ethic, he will excel at OSU…the spartan mentality and work ethic is definitely an advantage…
May 30th, 2010 at 11:27 am
Blake Renaud and Dylan Wynn from De La Salle both have offers from Oregon State…Obviously OSU is focused on bringing in quality kids..I’m a Cal fan and they haven’t beat OSU since 2006 – I don’t think Cal has offered a DLS kid ever…and that’s with having a DLS alumn has the top recruiting coach — we’re talking back yard! kills me!
May 30th, 2010 at 3:05 pm
The second best back in the bay behind Ward. Clutch in big games, playoffs, state game. The rest of the backs were media hype because of stats. When he’s healthy, he’s pure speed. Remember, he anchored a DLS 400 meter team to a NCS 40.85 record last year at state. That’s no chopped liver.
May 30th, 2010 at 3:17 pm
You got to ask yourself, does De La have speed or what? Just won ncs 400 RELAY @ 41.88 with 2 subs. Lost the fastest guy in the school, early, Egu from football injury and another late this year. Let’s see, 41.62 at Sacramento meet earlier. Last year NCS all time record of 40.85 beating out BHS from 1981. Year before, another state medal, 41.47. The combo out there for football and track is off the hook.
Bishop Gorman from Vegas is going to have their hands full. A class program, but they haven’t seen nothin’ like the Spartans. Those two soph hurdlers going to state are also football jocks.
May 30th, 2010 at 3:28 pm
DLS has always prided themselves on winning with average athletes, through superior coaching and a lot of hard work. Now, they have a stable of great athletes. This should be their best year ever.
May 30th, 2010 at 5:41 pm
Oregon State is really taping into the DLS pipeline – had previously offered Wynn and hear they just offered Renaud.
May 31st, 2010 at 12:12 pm
dj williams, MJD, Landry, Guitterez, Williams, lupina, ward, anderson, etc. etc…
come on average athletes…how many teams in the east bay have put together even close to these guys at the next level in the past 10 years…
granted they have the best coaching in the bay bar none!!! but stop kidding yourself with average athletes. they are still elite, no they don’t match up athlete for athlete with so cal teams and they still beat them. but if you are talking about nor cal it isn’t even close…they have the best 40 man roster every single year.
pitt, mac, berkeley, mv, etc may have 5 or 6 athletes that are on par but none have a full 22 set of STUD starters with great depth behind that…all those teams may have a few high profile guys but they have so many more player for player weaknesses than DLS and not even close to the depth. that is where these teams are exposed everytime vs DLS. DLS rarely has a weakness other than maybe overall size, but neither do other east bay teams.
so yes when they play so cal and other out of state teams i am all for DLS playing the average, small athlete card…but tired of all the fans using it within the east bay. Not one year in the past 20 could anyteam say they were player for player better than DLS. maybe a few they have the advantage on, but last time i checked football the ultimate team sport which is the reason DLS gets them everytime.
half these kids are on athletic scholarship for a reason…if they were just average players they wouldn’t be getting it. you can use that average athlete nonsense outside norcal, but you are kidding yourself if you honestly believe player for player DLS isn’t the most talented team every year.
May 31st, 2010 at 12:15 pm
and i don’t understand why cal keeps ignoring the solid bay area athletes like the DLS guys and such. not like they are winning pac-10 titles or anything. they have nothing home grown, its about time they change their recruiting focus because what they have been doing doesn’t work..every year they get a ton of hype and are ranked high nationally then fold down the stretch…against other pac-10 teams that are stealing their bay area talent. because it is theirs..bottom line is most of these guys would love to go to cal if they were offering, but they don’t so they leave to their rivals..
May 31st, 2010 at 3:00 pm
jefftedford thinks he knows everything. getting kids from L.A and texas, those areas are overatted. just look at the oregon and oregon state. there getting kids from norcal! our own backyard.! FIRE tedforD!! please boise state is beating teams all the time and everyone thinks its the kids in idoaho but no. its the kids in california! the have 32 players from california on there team
May 31st, 2010 at 3:38 pm
Thanks gentlemen for your fine analysis of the Spartan teams and players. I watched Tyler Anderson the entire last four seasons and I’ll tell you what, he has that intangible aspect to football that you just don’t see in every player, great heart! When the team needed him to perform and score, he did. When they needed a big play on D, he came through. He and his fine family are the best! I just couldn’t understand why colleges weren’t just flocking to sign him up. Maybe they thought they could get him cheaper or something. Well, I’ll tell you this, the other Pac 10 schools will rue the day that they didn’t snatch him up sooner. He will shine at OSU, that you can be assured. Mark my words. I called a lot of his touch downs this past year and you can almost sense it when he’ll reel off a long gain. What’s really gratifying is that he’s such a nice kid, well liked by the faculty and the student body. I can’t wait to watch the play by plays in the coming years! Go Tyler Go!
Your old admirer, Porque
June 2nd, 2010 at 2:02 pm
See 11, 15, 17, 18 above, sure seems like Cal is not interested much in Bay Area players, though very, very small number gets a call – why not?!
June 2nd, 2010 at 7:00 pm
When Cal replaces Teford in the next 3 years you will see a change in recruiting styles. If those recruits from Wash. St. work out in the next couple of years and Wash. St .beats Cal, Teford will be gone for sure.
June 3rd, 2010 at 1:17 am
I agree completely. Cal is losing out on a gold mineof talent right here in the eastbay alone. We’ll see if they show a presence at foothills passing league this weekend. the four best wide receiver prospects will be on display.
Deandre Carter of washington high. the mote vista boys Turner and Mcgovern as well as Rowland. If tedford deosnt stop his fetish with out of state talent they may lose all respect in not only the east bay but northern California. love the bears but they are killing themsleves.
June 3rd, 2010 at 12:00 pm
anyone else see this? Kravitz to cal high
http://sanramon.patch.com/articles/longtime-srv-football-coach-dave-kravitz-joins-staff-at-cal
June 3rd, 2010 at 2:46 pm
i have always been of the opinion that Tedford does do a poor job of getting players in his own backyard, but for this last signing class he did pretty well for himself. The 11th rated class according to rivals.
There was a point made on college football live this morning that I found very interesting when they were talking about the stud rb at the university of pittsburgh, Dion Lewis, who torched the Big East last year as a true freshman. They were wondering why he was so poorly recruited by other schools. And one of the analysts brought up that he felt college coaches were relying too much on the recruiting services out there rather then doing their own research. Too many good players from areas are being overlooked because they didn’t get a high rating by the recruiting services. This may hold true with Tedford as well.
June 3rd, 2010 at 4:24 pm
What you have to take into consideration is that the players would have to be able to hang in the classroom at one of the top colleges in the US. Players with 2.0 to 2.5 GPA’s in High School would be in over their heads at Cal
June 3rd, 2010 at 4:57 pm
Dnrapp, agree, but Cal still overlooks or shuns the good ones here – with acceptable grades. Why? Maybe reliance on recruiting services as suggested?
June 4th, 2010 at 10:09 am
These are all good points, the recruiting services that give stars to players is overrated. The best recruiting tool is seeing the prospect in person @ camp, combines, season, or even getting film. Just you’re given 4 stars by rivals doesn’t hold as much water as it may have used too. The all-star games are a good tool also, but to rely on the rating system is poor recruiting. All the players from the bay that went to washington state , oregon state, boise , san jose…etc. are top tier players and tedford dropped the ball!
June 6th, 2010 at 12:21 am
Even though Carter of whs played alot of qb against monte vista in passing legue saturday june 5 bryce mcgovern wanted no part of him in when carter was on defense as a db. he locled mc govern the whole session except for one pass completion i think carter is the best wr in northern cali. he was open all day. i also believe turnewr is the best wr on monte vista offense once he artrived the offense looked legit. turner is the truth ! carter s the truth! is mcgovern a by product of the system and the great play of former qb nottingham. I’m starting to believe so!
June 6th, 2010 at 11:18 pm
I must concur. Mcgovern defenitely looks overated.
Rumor has it at the Standford nike camp didn’t look good there either very slow and poor route running. Saturday carter locked him when they went head up. But the monte vista coaching staff did there best to keep the two from hooking up. It was mobvious Mcgovern was not in carter’s league as they constantly kept moving him from carter during a passing league session of all things defintely didn’t come out there to compete. Turner looked smooth and very explosive Mcgovern was definitely a by product of Nottingham passing and the monte vista system
June 7th, 2010 at 10:46 am
How did Logan look?
June 8th, 2010 at 12:00 am
the qb spot will be a work in progress for them running two would be sophmores in fall at the position.
I do not believe there whole quad was there do to NCS track. but if it was it could be a down year for logan. especially in the passing game.
June 8th, 2010 at 9:32 am
Only got to see the first 30 minutes of the passing league at Foothill but Monte Vista looked good.
Did anybody have a chance to see all of the teams on Saturday?
How well did Cal, Foothill and Granada and Washington fare throughout the afternoon?
June 8th, 2010 at 1:05 pm
who played qb for MV in the passing league game? did they rotate the two qb’s finnegan and lockie?
Also I don’t think it would be fair to say a kid looks overrated based on one passing league game. In an article on ESPN rise it mentioned that McGovern received some consideration for the WR MVP award at the Stanford camp. Let’s leave the overrated judgments until they put the pads on in the fall.
June 8th, 2010 at 9:53 pm
Are there anymore 7 on 7 tournments coming up? Who won the Foothill Tournment?
June 8th, 2010 at 10:29 pm
Yes there is a real Nice 7 on 7 tournament coming up Saturday June 26th come see some of the best teams in the Bay go head to head like Berkeley Hs, Washington Hs, El Cerritto Hs, Arroyo Hs and McClymonds Hs to name a few!! We have about three more spots available but come check out some good High School Football
June 9th, 2010 at 10:48 am
where is the june 26th 7 on 7 tourney going to be held?
June 9th, 2010 at 11:03 am

June 9th, 2010 at 12:38 pm
Hey thanks ManDown, Alameda needs to get in that I’ll pass the word on to the top .
June 9th, 2010 at 8:00 pm
Is there a lineman contest also @ CCC. Is Sac area and Solano area schools invited?
June 10th, 2010 at 10:06 am
Newark Memorial is hosting a pass tournament on Saturday, July 10th. There are a couple of last minute openings. Teams already in are Foothill, Milpitas, Amador, Kennedy, Newark, Dublin, Terra Nova and Hayward. Contact Coach Swift @ Rswift@nusd.k12.ca.us and I will get you the information.
June 10th, 2010 at 10:07 am
Newark Memorial is hosting a pass tournament on Saturday, July 10th. There are still a couple of openings.
June 10th, 2010 at 3:48 pm
all day i just recieved an email about the june 26 passing tournament and yes it does say they will have a big man comp, i hope they will have schools from the sjs section.
June 11th, 2010 at 9:47 am
Bhsfan, I heard the same thing about the big man comp,
I just got the word that Alameda is in.
June 12th, 2010 at 10:05 am
island02 any truth about coach reynolds & mckenna not coaching anymore? if so why? who will take over the defense cause he’ll have big shoes to fill.
June 12th, 2010 at 10:07 am
has anyone seen or heard from big green? that guy was making all this noise last summer bout albany & they end up like all teams he coaches….. SHITTY!
June 12th, 2010 at 7:19 pm
How is Alameda looking this year Island02? I hope things are going good this summer.
June 12th, 2010 at 9:53 pm
why would newark host a passing tournament they never throw the ball even though they have a qb with an arm .
swift must be after the fee’s. To bad for the te Kendall andrew’s hell of an athlete wont see 10 passes all season.
June 12th, 2010 at 9:59 pm
Kendall Andrew isn’t that great.
June 13th, 2010 at 8:35 am
same with kennedy i mean they never show a spread
June 13th, 2010 at 2:20 pm
Nfl, yes it’s true Coaches McKenna and Reynolds will not be returning, and out of respect for those men I’m not going to go into the reasons why at this time. Coach Rochlin has taken over the duties as D Coord.
Former Hornet , so far we look pretty good .We had a solid spring and our younger players got alot of reps. We’ll be competing in Coach Zo’s passing tourney on the 26th and that will be a great measuring tool for us. We return 2 1st team leaguers in Ruckman (QB), and Cunningham(RB), and a handful of players with varsity experience. As always we’re looking to compete for the league title and get into NCS and put in work..
June 14th, 2010 at 11:34 pm
Two of the worst ofensive teams in the east bay. no imagination and the kids will never have a chance at a college scholarship playing under them two coaches it’s just a shame. and kendall andrews is a good athllete how would we ever fully know with his team running the same six plays the past 50 years.
June 17th, 2010 at 1:27 pm
mark it down people ruckman will be player of the year in accal. best player & leader on are team! with rochlin calling the defense hornets won’t be stopped in the accal in 2010!
June 17th, 2010 at 1:39 pm
who will berkeley run the ball with this season?
June 20th, 2010 at 1:05 am
an over weight kid very big but not good he is at the cal camp also a couple of small backs nothing special there line is huge the bAKCS arent special yet and we ALL know the passing game is non excistant.
June 20th, 2010 at 9:41 pm
berkley high will be huge in size wise but didn’t see a special back out there at all an dthe throwing was non existent. alot of teams you can see were rusty though first time in pads for months.
June 20th, 2010 at 10:52 pm
Big Green is at Albany.
June 21st, 2010 at 1:16 am
i thought berkeley had ned back this year and he would take over for galvin?
June 21st, 2010 at 11:47 am
M. Ned is back this year. But Berkeley OL is over rated. Gig guys that can barley move and they’re out of shape.
June 21st, 2010 at 1:14 pm
alameda will beat berkeley at home this year! new coach probably new scheme that’s why i see us beaten this season.
June 21st, 2010 at 1:23 pm
until berkeley shows balance or atleast be able to complete a pass they will never be serious contenders! never understood why carter went 4 wide n passing league but never in a regular season game. how does that prepare a team wen u run plays just to win passing league games.
June 21st, 2010 at 4:11 pm
Where do you guys get your info from? I watched Berkeley all weekend. They fared fairly well in all their scrimmages except against Folsom, which was a bonus game on Friday. A lot of 1st year varsity lineman were played to get some experience, but don”t get it twisted Coach Sims will have them ready to play when the season starts. Berkeley has a good core of seniors. Oh and by the way the fullback kid is very good.
June 21st, 2010 at 11:23 pm
have to agree with warrior jacket, the fullback at berkeley must b pretty good, galvin rushed for over 2100 and ned for over 800, thats over 2900 yds of blocking, dont see how hes not good. coach sims have had less players [ 20 if he was lucky] and has had less talent but yet still have been sucessful. dont see how he wont get his guys ready, lots of talent and size
June 22nd, 2010 at 11:39 am
Berkeley’s FB is a beast, very solid blocker and runs well too. Galvin/Ned ran behind a big strong o-line that just blew holes open for him and the FB cleaned up anything in the way.
June 22nd, 2010 at 12:22 pm
Lets keep it real. Galvin and Ned would have ran for all those yards with or without that FB. Carter ran the ball dam near 40-45 times a game. With that many carries Galvin didn’t need him to run for all those yards. He would break long runs without great blocking let alone a FB. The FB position is over rated and dude isn’t that good.
June 22nd, 2010 at 1:10 pm
ManDown, He was good against us, lol ! and Galvin had one of the best o-lines around along with Encinal.
June 22nd, 2010 at 1:59 pm
ManDown, do you really go to Berkeley High games or do you just read the paper or hear about them? Galvin and Ned are both special backs but if you ask them, as well as, Coach Carter they will all tell you the fullback, Keir Abrams, played a contributing roll to their success. In Coach Carter offenses even at MACK, the fullback made the offense go. Plain and simple no kick out blocks, no long runs. The kid can also catch out of the backfield and he can play middle backer.
June 22nd, 2010 at 7:05 pm
ManDown,
I have read these blogs for close to 2 years, and I cant recall once when you have ever complimented a kid or a coach. What is wrong with you? Most guys on this blog are at least standing for something (a player, coach or school). What do you stand for? Talking S**T anonymously on blogs, while ripping players and coaches publicly?
June 23rd, 2010 at 1:43 am
Well coach carter no longer runs the team and i watched a renegade team at the cal camp not only shut them out but shut them completely not moving the ball. thats were i got my info from. the full bakc was a beast but slow just big. ned looked very average with these guys blocking play a 4-3 and drop a safety in the bock shut them down all day and we the passing game is a roll out or a 9 route play cover 3 and you’ll kill them
June 23rd, 2010 at 8:58 am
JpLose, still I ask where do you get your info from? Everyone is well aware Coach Carter no longer coaches Berkeley HS, Coach Fred Sims is the new coach. Michael Ned did not participate in the CAL camp. It is also kind of hard to understand what you are blogging because you have to many missplelled or missing words in your entries. Finally, no team was perfect at CAL camp because its a “camp” every team played young or reserve players to gain experience. Berkeley was no different than everyone else.
June 23rd, 2010 at 11:12 am
As a coach on coach carters staffs as oline coach, R. Thomas, and W. Griffin, wouldnt got their yards without I Anderson, and that great oline, with D. Hill, G. Butler, A. Howard, T. Byrd, N. Ward, and Hershal. Rickey and Ned couldnt run against Pinole, because Keir, Jalen, and Isaiah, were all injuried, so Warriorjacket you are corect.
June 24th, 2010 at 10:29 am
if jp lose was watchin b high so close he also wouldve noticed that lineman isiah henderson was not suited up and participating in cal camp.
June 24th, 2010 at 11:46 am
Will Berkeley High have a passing game under Coach Sims? How will the running game look without Galvin?
June 24th, 2010 at 12:19 pm
MACK… Get Ready!!!
July 5th, 2010 at 12:21 pm
…Tosh Lupoi was given schollie, now OL coach…Atari Callan began his college caerre at Cal as DB
