NCS Division III baseball resumes today

For those wondering just what exactly happened on Saturday in the NCS Division III baseball championship between El Cerrito and Miramonte, here’s the deal.

The Gauchos and Matadors played to a 0-0 tie after 10 innings, at which point the game was suspended, due to a 2 1/2 hour time limit. The time limit, which is normally used when NCS hosts baseball at the Oakland Coliseum, was used because there was a game following the Gauchos and Mats. So, according to the NCS bylaws, they are required to resume the game on the next available day.

Today is that next available day, and the teams will meet back up at Saint Mary’s College today at 4 p.m. to decide a champion. I’ll be there, for however long the game lasts (am I the only one that figures we’ll be there for an inning?) and we’ll have the story up later tonight.

Purvis wows in Clovis

Wow is about the only word worth describing the way St. Elizabeth High senior Ashton Purvis completed her high school career. The Miami-bound star won the 100 meters in a national-leading wind-legal time of 11.17. That’s the seventh-best time EVER in the United States by a high school athlete and the second-best ever in California. Only Marion Jones (Heard of her? Yeah, I thought so.) has ever run faster with her time of 11.14 at the 1992 CIF state meet. Purvis then raced to another personal-best of 22.90 in the 200 meters, again the best time in the nation this year. Simply unbelievable and a real thrill to watch. I don’t think this is the last time you’ll hear the name Ashton Purvis.

NCS baseball/softball updates on Twitter

We’ll try to provide as many updates as we can from tomorrow’s NCS baseball and softball championship games on our twitter account, @eastbaypreps. If you don’t already have it, here’s the link.

I’ll check in from Saint Mary’s College about halfway through the Division IV softball final between Berean Christian and Cloverdale and will provide updates through the D-I game between Freedom and James Logan. Ben Enos will also be in Moraga for the Division II and III baseball finals, and I’m sure he’ll have updates from those games. We’ll do our best to keep you posted on other scores from the day as well.

Remembering Charlie Wedemeyer

Most high school football enthusiasts, whether in the South Bay or here in the East Bay, knew who former Los Gatos High coach Charlie Wedemeyer was. And, if you don’t, you should. I know we didn’t run much on his passing in today’s East Bay editions, so I wanted to share a great piece on Wedemeyer’s life, written by Mercury News columnist Mark Purdy. It’s a great read.
