Payne makes her decision

Carondelet High basketball star Erica Payne orally committed to Stanford on Wednesday.
“I realized that since I had the opportunity to go there, that was the choice I wanted to make,” Payne said. “The funny thing is that at first (last summer), I wasn’t so sure about Stanford. It’s so close to home and … it’s familiar to me. As I went through this process and I thought about it more and more, I decided I liked what was going on at Stanford. … It grew on me more and more until it was my top option.”
Payne averaged 15.0 points, 10.9 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 2.6 steals and 2.2 blocks per game in helping the Cougars reach the California Interscholastic Federation Division II state championship game last season as a junior. She seriously considered UCLA, Arizona State, Cal, Boston College, Texas and Notre Dame before choosing the Cardinal. The 6-foot-2 Payne said that Stanford sees her as a wing.
