When Concord High quarterback Ricky Lloyd started the recruiting process, the first offers came from far off places like Mississippi, Oklahoma and Iowa.
On Friday, Lloyd chose to make one of those places a big part of his future.
Lloyd, one of the top quarterbacks in the East Bay coming into the 2010 season, gave an oral commitment to Southern Mississippi, choosing to play for the Conference USA school in the fall of 2011.
“I sat down with my parents and by myself and did my research and figured out what I wanted,” Lloyd said Saturday. “Southern Miss has everything I wanted.”
Lloyd, who thrived in Concord’s spread offense in 2009, said the fact that the Golden Eagles run almost a carbon-copy of Concord’s attack had a lot to do with his decision.
“They told me (the offense) is exactly what we run,” Lloyd said. “It made the decision a lot easier. I felt a lot more comfortable coming into a system I know.”
Lloyd, who is a three-star recruit on Rivals.com, said he chose the Golden Eagles from a final list that included Tulsa and San Jose State. Southern Mississippi was one of the first schools to offer Lloyd, which he said also made a difference.
