Thompson/Perenon co-head coaches at Mt. Eden

Ron Thompson and Paul Perenon are back in the Hayward Area Athletic League once again.

Thompson was named as the new head coach for the Mt. Eden High football team last week, and he’ll be joined by Perenon, who will serve essentially as a co-head coach.
According to Mt. Eden athletic director Manuel Manzo, Thompson is the head coach and Perenon will be his assistant, at least on paper. But Thompson said they will treat the job as co-head coaches.
“Paul and myself took this job together and the school from the administration to (Manzo) has been nothing but supportive,” Thompson added. “There’s no doubt we can bring some good things out of this program.”
The duo will take over for George Mitsopoulos, who was not retained as the Monarchs head coach and athletic director in June. The Monarchs went 4-16 in two seasons under Mitsopoulos.
Thompson returns to Mt. Eden after serving as an assistant coach under Jesse Rodriguez in 2005-06. He was named the head coach at Hayward in 2006, but left abruptly without ever coaching a game. He has also coached at Granada and Las Lomas, but took last season off to care for his mother.
“This was a great opportunity for me to come back and help restore this program,” Thompson said. “I had a great time here as an assistant along with great success. We have a lot of work ahead of us and it will take some time.”
Perenon comes to the Monarchs after compiling a 209-75-2 record in 25 years as Bishop O’Dowd’s head coach. After his contract was not renewed for the 2010 season, he accepted a job as the quarterbacks coach at Piedmont. But, he let Highlanders coach Kurt Bryan know that if a head coaching opportunity opened up, he would pursue it.
“Having someone like (Perenon) here has been a big influence on the players,” Thompson said. “With his success at (O’Dowd), he brings a positive vibe on this field.”

Always enjoy being around the Mt. Eden guys when covering one of their games. They work hard and keep fighting even when they are down big. Most nights, they just weren’t able to match up. I guess they felt George just wasn’t getting the job done, I wish him the best.

  2. Oalfan Says:

    NEW HALL PREDICTIONS

    3. Hayward
    4. Mt. Eden (Paul Perenon )!!!
    5. Arroyo
    6. Tennyson
    7. San Lorenzo
    8. Castro Valley

  3. KillerD Says:

Mt. Eden made a good move by hiring Perenon and Thompson to right the ship.

    Off the cuff HAAL predictions.

    1. San Leandro
    2. Hayward
    3. Castro Valley
    4. ODowd
    5. Arroyo
    6. Mt. Eden
    7. San Lorenzo
    8. Tennyson

  4. CHALKtalk Says:

    1. San Leandro
    2. Arroyo
    3. Hayward
    4. ODowd
    5. San Lorenzo
    6. Mt. Eden
    7. Castro Valley
    8. Tennyson

SL high seems to be far to powerful for anyone in the
HAAL. If the coaches could play maybe Odowd, would have a chance coaching is great over there just dont think the talent is up to par. ARRoyo has far too many weapons not to come in second. First maybe if the discipline improves.Hayward may shock the HAAL with the best backs in te league. San Lorenzo lack of knowledge will be there downfall ( you know when you think you know but dont know Jack)CV work in progress
    Tennyson LORD HAVE MERCY LMAO

  5. ManDown Says:

    CHALKtalk,
Arroyo number 2? Wow! You think that team is better than Hayward and ODowd?

  6. PERKIN Says:

No. Barnes is not taking over a loaded team it will take a year to get good atleast 2 to talk about them competing with SL which is what the #2 team means.

  7. ManDown Says:

    Perkin,
    I agree.

  8. c.sparks Says:

you guys are arguing, about whose going to win the EASIEST LEAUGUE IN THE ENTIRE EAST BAY… get a grip.. who cares about the toilet leaugue.. san leandro is going to get bounced out of d1 playoffs.. O dowd. arroyo, mt eden, ….. i am not going to even start

  9. Coach Trot Says:

It’s so funny when someone tries to determine wat should be discussed on a blog… Especially a blog where the subject is a New HAAL cooach being hired…

  10. CHALKtalk Says:

As a team no, they r not better then either but they have athletes that are game changers

  11. ManDown Says:

So Arroyo’s athletes are better than ODowd and Hayward? I don’t think so.

  12. CHALKtalk Says:

lol i guess you dont get paid to think

  13. Matt Rempel Says:

I guess this turned into a HAAL preview column instead. The bottom line is everyone agrees this is San Leandro’s league. Typically the Pirates run the table in league and lose to a team that can actually pass. I really like McMurray, the RB at Arroyo and Wright is a great coach at SLZ. I’ve heard CV wants to move to the EBAL, but it would get crushed even worse in that leauge. Regardless, I think we are all glad football is just around the corner!!

  14. allRoads Says:

    Predictions

    1. San Leandro
    2. Mt. Eden
    3. Hayward
    4. – 8. The rest

  15. Bleachercoach Says:

You know I thought leagues like the MCAL and BSAL where weak leagues and then I looked at the HAAL numbers why is there even discussion about a league were the highest rated team is an 8.2. If it was not for a watered down playoff structure none of these teams would see the playoffs

  16. brandonbeard Says:

I think we sometimes go too far with our predictions after a school gets a new head coach. It takes time to build a program, but I think the fastest team to success in the HAAL is Arroyo. Defense win championships and I think Coach Barnes has proven himself to be a good defensive coach. He has walked into some talent, and when you have talent and a good scheme, things can go very well for you! Not sure if SanLeandro still gets the Top nod. I will go with BOD, then Arroyo, then San Leandro as the top 3, but i still like San Lorenzo to surprise some people this year. So those are my top 4 teams this year for the HAAL.

  17. Coachb Says:

@ brandonbeard, are you kidding me? You have odowd and arroyo ahead of San leandro?. For the past few years now San leandro has been winning that league with ease. They always seem to pass by every team in the league. Last time I checked San leandro had the best offense in league for a few years in a row, plus not far behind the defense is up there as well. We’ll just see how this year turns out.

  18. CHALKtalk Says:

    #16
coach the players not your system then and only then young skywalker will the force be with you

  19. EBfootball Says:

Keep it real HAAL fans… What happened to that league? Y’all used to make some noise but you haven’t been winning playoff games like you used to.

  20. CHALKtalk Says:

lets keep it real you have coaches that shouldn’t be able to walk a dog, coaching the players. I know they’re doing the best they can, “cry me a river a got dam river”
and for the head coaches that hire these back seat driver arm chair QB’s shame on you LMAO

  21. Matt Rempel Says:

Will be real interesting to see the O’Dowd/Mt. Eden matchup in the fall. Think Perenon will want that one? Curious to see if Mt. Eden adopts Perenon’s practice of having that one running back that carries the ball 25-30 times a game. O’Dowd always loved the smash mouth game. At the very least, this makes the Monarchs’ progam something to watch this year.

  22. Coach Trot Says:

    EBfootball-

Very true, Haal has not been to level it used to be in the past..I think the new wave of coachs that have entered the lge along with the excitement and energy that come with that will dramatically change the atmosphere in this lge….Lets check back after the 3rd week of the season to see how these teams do with there out of league schedule…

If San Leandro knocks of Bellermaine and arroyo Knocks of Logan then what?????

  23. Coach Trot Says:

Lastly…Like any other lge there has been huge coachin turn around in the lge lately for what ever reason..Coach Bowers @ SL is now the longest tenered coach @ his school with 8 yrs in…Haal has lost alot of talented coach’s to other league’s,nex level or retirement.. No excuse’s jus sum info..

  24. CHALKtalk Says:

HERE’S how i see it if you were not a talented player you have no idea what its like to have talent you subject your players to what you preceive as possible
not what they re actually capable of.

  25. Tony Gonsalez Says:

    Coach Trot,
Actually Bowers and Terry Smith are both the longest tenured coaches in the HAAL now. Both are entering their 8th season as the head coach.

  26. Matt Rempel Says:

You wanna give props to somebody in the HAAL? Terry Smith at Tennyson is the winner hands down. He is a good coach, is in a tough environment, and never gives up on a program that would be easy to give up on. Would love to see the Lancers do something at some point, we’ll see.

  27. Coach Trot Says:

    Thanks Tony…

Didnt realize Terry had been there that long.

  28. AroundTheLeague Says:

ChalkTalk… I agree with you on Arroyo having more talent than people think. I saw their Frosh/Soph against SL and they had some talented kids that I will assume are moving up this year.

However I will say that I dont think the coaches in the league are BAD in as much as they are INEXPERIENCED. A lot of young head coaches and with that comes a lot of young assistant coaches as well.

  29. EBfootball Says:

Like Coach Trot said, let’s not talk about the HAAL til week 3.

What’s up with the DFAL??? A vet good consistent league. My prediction:
    1) Miramonte
    2) Las Lomas
    3) Alhambra
    4) Campo
    5) Acalanes
    6) Daughery Valley
    7) Dublin (HAAL’s last good coach Casey Moreno’s current team. Kinda puts things into perspective)

  30. ManDown Says:

Now the DFAL will be interesting this year too. I like Miramonte and Las Lomas battling it out for the top spot but I think Las Lomas might take it. But Miraminte looks like an early favorite this year with them reaching the semis last year against Encinal and almost pulling off an upset. I also think Alahambra will be in the mix with a lot of players coming back but losing the Head coach might be a bit of a blow for the bulldogs. My sleeper this year in that league will be Acalanes. Coach Ivankovich had those boys playing tough last year and going into his second year the Dons will be competitive.

    1. Las Lomas
    2. Miramonte
    3. Alahambra
    4. Acalanes
    5. Campo
    6. Daugherty Valley
    7. Dublin

  31. Bleachercoach Says:

how can you pick Miramonte if there whole schedule has not been released? I only see 7 games listed for them

  32. EBfootball Says:

Well we know who 6 of their oppenents will be and three non-league games are posted. Only one game is unknown and they could only play 9 like PV does but I doubt that. Mission SJ? Why bother? Besides, Non-league records don’t matter when it comes to league standings.

  33. ManDown Says:

“How can you pick Miramonte” They finished strong last year. Beating Novato and giving Encinal a run for there money was impressive for a team that started the year off weak. They return a good team with a good coaches

  34. ManDown Says:

Any Marin fans here? Any word if they will defend there D-3 crown or stay down and play D-4? If they stayed down it would be very strange that they wouldn’t go back up and try to defend the D-3 title.

  35. PERKIN Says:

Bleachercoach stop hating on Miramonte they ZEROED Novato at home & killed all the stigma that Novato is a tough place to win in the PLAY-OFFS. That QB was only a Sophmore & is coming back this year. The sky is the limit with him. They’ll beat Novato again at home this year. Take that too the bank.

  36. brandonbeard Says:

CoachB All I am saying is that Bishop O’dowd will be a different team this year. San Leandro has been running the show as of late but I think there will be some changes. I feel Hardy will do a very good job, and so will JB at aRROYO, Boom has done well over the past few years, and he will continue, but I think O dowd wins it

  37. KillerD Says:

My shot at the DFAL this year:

    1) Miramonte will finish 10-0 or 9-1

    2) Las Lomas looking to go 8-2

    3) Acalanes suprising 7-3 this year

    4) Campo 7-3 but losses to Mats, LL and Acalanes

    5) Alhambra goes 7-3 but losses to Mats, LL & Campo

    6) Dougherty Valley 5-5 not bad but 2012 will win DFAL

    7) Dublin 4-6 and something amiss in D-town

  38. headphones Says:

i am an Encinal guy, but i wouldnt be surprised one bit if mirmonte goes undefeated or losses at least 1 or 2

  39. DonJuan01 Says:

    Don Juan’s predictions for HAAL

    1. Arroyo(We smack A$$,ask McClymonds & Berkeley.)
    2. San Leandro(Good, but not this year.)
    3. Hayward(Speed,No QB, weak line)
    4. O’Dowd(May fall down a few spots,no offense)
    5. San Lorenzo(Slightly better than the rest)
    6. Tennyson(No talent)
    7. Mt.Eden(No commitment)
    8. Castro Valley(No heart)

    MVP – McMurray(Arroyo)
Coach of the year – Barnes(Arroyo)

  40. renegades10 Says:

    DFAL predictions

    1. Miramonte- Solid returning talent to go along with a good coach and this team should run away with the DFAL this year. Preseason schedule is not challenging at all and they should go into the postseason undefeated. They do have to play both Acalanes and Las Lomas on the road, but still feel confident they will beat both.

    2. Acalanes- Return four starters on both sides of the ball and move a solid JV squad. 2nd year under Ivankovich and this team will run the ball down team’s throats and play a tough, hardnosed style similar to Alhambra of last year. That style will win games late in the season. Gets the Mats at home but travel to Las Lomas and Alhambra. First two games of the season will be indicators of whether this team will pose a serious challenge to the Mats as they take on YV and Hayward.

    3. Las Lomas- Defense and ball control are what will win games for this team. Good rb in Waters, but that’s it for the Knights on the offensive side of the ball. Defensively they return six starters including a solid LB and Michael Pope who is the backup rb. The defense will have to perform very well if this team wants a chance at the league title. The question will be can Waters carry this offense on his back, or will he wear down by the end of the season. This may be the last chance the Knights have for at least the next year or two to be at the top as their JV team was an abysmal 1-9. Preseason they should beat Vintage on the road and then they have two home games back to back against Marin Catholic and College Park. Marin Catholic will more then likely be too strong but a win against College Park would help their case for playoffs. They finish up with Northgate at home and this is a game I wouldn’t sleep on for Knights’ fans. Northgate returns a good amount of starters and a decent JV squad. Fortunately in league for the Knights they get the three toughest teams at home in the Mats, Dons, and Bulldogs.

    4. Alhambra- Will have to replace long time coach as well as find a replacement for their stud rb from last year Calhoun. Those two things will determine how this team performs this year. Early tests against College Park and YV will be a good indicator of where this team stands going into DFAL play.

5-7: The rest. Expect Campo to be five, but if Alhambra is worse then expected could jump up to four. DV and Dublin will fight it out to not be at the bottom. It should be noted that Dublin is a year away from being a good team. While freshman teams are not a complete indicator of the direction of a program, the 2009 Gael frosh team ran the table at 10-0. Some of those players may contribute this year on varsity so this is a team that should be on the rise.

  41. Coachb Says:

@ brandonbeard, I see where you’re coming from, but every year people have odowd over San leandro but in the end we all know who’s league the haal is. I know for a fact that San leandro has tons of athletes coming back for their senior year. Last year they had
5 or 6 underclassmen seeing a huge amount of playing time. Besides that I see SLZ finishing ahead of odowd too. Even with all that talent odowd had last year the rebels gave them a tough game.

  42. EHS Logger Says:

Mandown- Div 3 is going to be interesting! Several playoff teams from D2 dropped down with the new enrollment numbers including champion Eureka. I hope Marin petitions to play D3. Eureka returns several seniors who were key starters last year. So even without Soma the offense will run strong. The defense will pick up where they left off last year, intense. Can’t wait for the season to start.

  43. CHALKtalk Says:

    #28Aroundtheleague
    INEXPERIENCED= mistake= BAD
My problem is you have these coach who were sorry player favoring kids that remind them of theirselves
    and starting them.
    Do players get cut anyone
Do coaches have to know football or just CPR
watching Video and reading books and saying a bunch of verbicth dont make you a coach
I know put an ad in the paper Baby sitters needed in the HAAL from 3 to 7 daily must be able to BS on friday and saturday night.

  44. Coach Trot Says:

    Chalktalk-

You got me dying over here!!!!!LMAO

  45. ManDown Says:

EHS Logger why wouldn’t you guys petition back up after winning Div 2 last year?

  46. EHS Logger Says:

I don’t know. That would be a coaching decision. It appears on paper that the top of D3 is very competitive.

  47. PERKIN Says:

EHS Logger competing at D-III after winning D-II is like fighting for the Lightheavyweight championship when you’re already the Heavyweight Champ. Or in Pro wresting fighting for the Intercontinental Championship when you’re the World champion. Encourage your coaches to give D-II another run & go back to back. You say you have a good team.

I can agree with every scenario up to & including playing in the D-II championship game a barely losing the game as being a good reason to stay D-III. But you guys won it all. Samething for Marin Catholic. This is just my opinion.

  48. ManDown Says:

I agree PERKIN. Lol. That is true.

  49. ManDown Says:

    EHS Logger,
Do you think that the comp. in Div 3 is better than Div 2? With teams like Marin, Novato, Miramonte, Encinal, Alahambra, ODowd, and now YV?

  50. PERKIN Says:

DFAL basing everything off last year the only team I’ve seen this summer if Campolindo :
1)Las Lomas number one good back coming back srtongest pre-season schedule should be ready to take league.

2)Miramonte I’m real high on how this team finished & their QB from last year but I can see them finishing 3rd. Losing a lot of key 2 way guys like thier FB/LB & King WR/LB big playmaker.

3)Campolindo the only team I’ve seen they looked pretty solid best team best team at Skyline camp out of EC, St.Mary’s, Skyline, SLZ for what thats worth. Descent QB. O-line play good. D leaves something to be desired.

4)Alhambra not only needs to replace Calhoun who was really a huge factor last year but their QB. Calhoun was the consistent rock but QB lead the team great & made plays when they needed. They are returning that really good FB but he & Calhoun fed well off each other. Couple descent linemen coming back great athlete WR/DB in Trevor Davis I think his name is. Wouldn’t be surprised if he ran some Fly Sweeps this year. Could finish as High as 3rd if they find a good QB.

    5) Acalanes I was not impressed with the Hybrid DoubleWing out of Shotgun that Ivankovich was forced to run or their D but they did play hard still better then Dublin & Dougherty Valley.

    6) Dublin Moreno runs a Fly offense & a coaching personality built for Hayward high or schools simlilar to that just hasn’t found the right mix of athletes or players to buy into how he coaches.

    7) Dougherty Valley young still trying to establish itself may beat out Dublin.

  51. Bleachercoach Says:

I follow the Marin football scene and I hear word that they have a manchild sophmore QB who will step up to play Varsity. If that doesnt pan out they will have the 2nd string QB from last year who came in and preformed well in the State Title game. Novato is returning there starting QB who was a late transfer in last season and started as a sophmore. He was injured the week prior to the Miramonte game (very bad hip Pointer) and as we all know Novato was ineffective without him. I have heard he has put on 30-40 pounds do to a great off season weight program couple that with a full off-season under coach Brackett who was a QB he should be outstanding this season.

Both teams have very tough preseason schedules Novato’s is by far the toughest. Novato could very well start league 0-3 but will be a tougher team for it. MC should beat the snott out of Berkeley and SI so I see them going 10-0

  52. EHS Logger Says:

Perkin- I will pass on your comments to our coach.

Man- The divisions are based on number of students enrolled. Is 3 better than 2? The D2 teams have larger groups of students to choose from. As I stated I think the top of D3 should be very competitive.

  53. AroundTheLeague Says:

CHALKTalk: were you a good player yourself?

  54. PERKIN Says:

DonJuan01 I heard that MAC really got in your ass at the CCC camp & that Arroyo started a fight cuz they couldn’t hang with those athletes.

  55. CHALKtalk Says:

nope a great player but not a good teammate
i think people should get it or get gone

  56. CHALKtalk Says:

    #54 perkins
I was at that CCC camp MAc GOT A BUNCH of dirty players taking cheap shot AND late hits at arroyo… the big white dude got tired of it and knock the shit out of mack player his helmet flew all the way from the field 2 the track parent jumped on the field and everything

A NEW DON is coming and im buying in

  57. DonJuan01 Says:

Perkin, you must have been that drunk dad that ran on the field. Mack is lucky they dropped us b/c we would have slapped them around. We are beasty this year. Watch us smack Logan & then you’ll be askin to ride with us. Coach Barnes taking us to the coliseum. You ol’ fool get on board & stop hating.

    DON JUAN.

  58. AroundTheLeague Says:

CHALKTalk: I am not trying to pick on you, but as an older observer of the game and life.. some of these “terrible as player” coaches make better coaches than yourself at THIS level; by your own criteria.

  59. CHALKtalk Says:

#You maybe right sir my method make players football perfect most kids cant handle not making any excuses. Being responsible for your actions. Doing work i mean real work . YOUR WORK IS YOUR FAITH SIR

some people say they believe in god but their work will show you their true faith

some people say they’re coaches so look at their work

  60. AroundTheLeague Says:

I think you’re right that there are some kids in some schools in that area that are like that. That is part of the job for the coaches there and it is not an easy one, so give them some credit.

  61. renegades10 Says:

while logan has been one of the top programs in NCS for quite some time they will be very down this year. they return only four starters total and there wasn’t much talent behind last year’s starters so i hope arroyo could find a way to beat them. probably will be a defensive slugfest.

  62. PERKIN Says:

With that weakass QB & O-Line/D-Line U got? U must go to practice on one everyday. I got your team outta the play-offs getting blown out by SL & Logan by 4 TDs & not making play-offs at 4-6 probably on these blogs talking bout how good you are. Get on the same page with your coach all he’s talkning bout on these blogs is next year, next year we’re hella young. You’re beating Irvington, CV, Tennyson, & Mt.Eden or Newark. Enjoy those wins & ride with your leader.

  63. Coach Mac Says:

    Donjuan01
    #57

We will be in your scrimmage on Aug 28th for you to slap us around again. If that is truly what you saw. I guess we are just pain freaks at Mack. We haven’t dropped you or anyone else. Our offense mauled you up and down the field. Our defense was due next and we decided to take it home because emotions were out of hand. We will be at Arroyo Aug 28th for your scrimmage.

  64. Coach500 Says:

Maybe we can break down the returning players from the top teams in the HAAL such as SL,o’dowd, hayward, and arroyo. Im pretty sure everyone agrees that they are the only true contenders.

  65. Haalfanatic Says:

@ donjuan01, you make it seem like your team already won the haal. But in reality you still gotta knock down San leandro who won league 7 times in ten years plus there’s also hayward who has tons of athletes plus slz who was a surprise team last year. Also don’t expect Logan to be a weak team this year the same coaches that coached for San leandro back then coaches there soo they will know how to handle your dons.
    Predictions
    1. San leandro
    2. Hayward
    3. Slz
    4. Oddw

  66. Haalfanatic Says:

    Predictions top 5
    1. San leandro
    2. Hayward
    3. Slz
    4. Odowd
    5. Arroyo

  67. EBfootball Says:

NEEEXXXXTTTT… Are we still talking about the HAAL? Let’s move on. What about the ACCAL?

    1) Berkeley
    2) EC
    3) PV
    4) Alameda
    5) Richmond
    6) DeAnza
    7) Hercules

  68. ManDown Says:

    EBfootball,
How can you put Pinole in front of Alameda after what they did to them last year? I’m telling you Alameda will turn heads this year and will place 2nd this year and give Berkeley all they can handle. I see Pinole being a little better but Alameda will be the surprise team in that league. I can see EC giving teams problems this year but they lost the 2 stud WR from last year Goins and Williams.

    1. Berkeley
    2. Alameda
    3. Pinole
    4. EC
    5. Richmond
    6. Hercules
    7. De Anza

  69. JB"DON" Says:

I don’t no who donjuan01 (stop) is but we didn’t look good at the CCC camp. But I am not going to sit here and let coaches say there going to run up in me. I coached in the OAL and I have blasted ever team. Now scrimmage are ok and real games are diff one is one paper one is not.
Yes we are young by grade and age but I have never said 4 – 6 lol that is funny. This is SL league and no one else until someone knocks them off that’s the level we are working towards. Each day we get better has a program over all . Watch out we will be ready Logan week 1.

I think Arroyo comes in the top three !!!

4-6?? You crazy or drunk? Again we smackin’ Logan & the rest of the HAAL. No one from the OAL should speak on these blogs unless you’ve beaten coach. He’s blasted EVERY team in that league & you know he’ll do the same in the HAAL.

And Mac didn’t want to play us in regular season. They wanted a scrimmage. We’ll show you what’s up at the scrimmage. I’m done talkin’ everybody just wait and see. We gonna make you wanna be a DON.

    DON JUAN.

    2010 HAAL Champs.

  71. EBfootball Says:

ManDown- I saw PV this summer and they have some ATHLETES!!! And Alameda lost a lot of varsity players where it counts the most (oline and LB’s). Alameda has a great back and QB and that’s about it. Speed kills and EC and PV got it. I almost was tempted to put PV at #1.

  72. ManDown Says:

Where did you see PV? I know for a fact they don’t do contact camps. I hope you are not judging that team from a passing league game? We all know those don’t really mean much and I am sure they look good with no pads on playing jump ball. I know speed kills but Alameda got the good end of that team last year and came close to beating EC. With a good QB and RB can help that team even with the losses on the OL and LB pos.

  73. headphones Says:

mandown, alot of great points, but i know for a fact ALAMEDA returns two starters on offense, and 3 on defense.. they graduated almost there whole team.. except that stud running back.. who doesnt have break way speed… but most likely the 3 or second best rb in the bay..i see alameda finishing 4th.. behind.. berkely, pinole, EC.. i dont see a 7-3 jv team coming up to varsity and filling 17 open postions and finishing second.. it just doesnt happen like that

  74. WARRIOR JACKET Says:

DONJUAN #39 WHAT SMACKIN DID ARROYO DO AGAINST MACK AND BERKELEY? PLEASE DON’T START “POPPIN” YOU KNOW YOU STILL HAVE HAVE TO SEE MACK AND BERKELEY AT YOUR HOSTED SCRIMMAGE. I’M JUST SAYING!

  75. NewGuy Says:

    Wait a minute…
#68 De Anza will finish higher than Hercules, who cares about the top dogs.

I love it when people come on to a blog and say, “I know for a fact.”

  76. ManDown Says:

    Headphones,
Maybe you and EBfootball are right. I agree that they have better athletes and good speed. You two make good points but you have to respect what they have done and when you return a handful players like that it can make to whole team play at a higher level. All three teams you listed in front of them are losing there best players Galvin(BHS) Williams(EC) Henderson(PV). How will the teams fair without those studs? When you have that “GUY” it effects the whole team and can help that teams through the tough times like PV, Berkeley, and EC did with the three studs.

  77. island02 Says:

Mandown you make some very good points, it’s obvious you are well versed on the HS football scene. Headphones, you make some sense also.I have to disagree about Alameda’s RB not having breakaway speed. You don’t get over 1400 yds on 197 carries without breaking away from the field. Against Newark Memorial he had 231 yds with a 67 yd td run, where he broke away from the field, BOD, 27 yd burst to the endzone from the los, there were numerous games where he showed not only quick cuts at the los, burst and breakaway speed.

  78. island02 Says:

Headphones, I will upload his highlight film to maxpreps and youtube for you to watch. How many Alameda games did you see last season?

  79. CHALKtalk Says:

    Island 02
your guy is quick and has great football speed . When you break away you have 2 transition from a football stride to a track stride. BUT IM NO EXPERT

  80. PERKIN Says:

    ACCAL Prediction:
    1) B-High. From what I’ve seen of Berkeley this year mostly 7on7 it seems to be the same Berkely. Better sthletes last year. 3rd coaching change I’ve seen same offense. I’ll give Simms his respect down B-High year or not he’ll win this league.

    2) Pinole Valley may give Berkeley a run for its money. Better athlete at QB not throwing is why they lost to Alameda & EC. Consistency at coaching. This guy did run this league for a 5 year stretch he gets the right athletes he’ll get it done. They’ll beat EC in the trenches & match they athletes. Same with Alameda they’ll beat them in the trenches.

    3) Alameda definitely better then Herc, DA, & Richmond. Will lose to Pinole cause they have to go to Pinole tough place to win they haven’t done it EVER! That isn’t changing this year. They could beat EC gotta see how both teams come out the gates. I’m seeing EC playing all games on the road Alameda should be at EC. EC all games on the road gonna give them 2 loses & maybe a down year.

    4) EC. Good QB coming back. Solid non-league. They’ll lose to B-High & Pinole but could beat Alameda in a thriller. All games on the road is tough.

5-7) WHo cares these teams are horrible.

Coach Cunningham how bout some highlights of this summer? Last year is over. I know Alameda Var usually goes to one or two Contact Camps.

  81. PERKIN Says:

JB”Don” first looking at it I think 4-6 is doing a solid job for first year but I can’t give that league any credit its really terrible. I think Arroyo will lose to SL, Logan, BOD for sure probably Hayward. I can’t just say SLZ is a loss that is a rivalry game. SLZ, Mt. Eden(DOn’t know why I’m giving them any credit I guess Perenon this should be a win too)Newark Memorial out of those games U should go 2-3. 5-5 is doing an OK job.

I can’t beleive not JB”Don” but anybody affiliated with Arroyo DonJUan01 (you might be a player with how insecure you sound) that your talking shit about MAC & B-High & your gonna scrimmage them. Good way to get people QB’s hit late & players cheap shotted.

  82. ManDown Says:

Arroyo will be lucky to go 6-4 this year. If they go 6-4 the coaches did a solid job over there because I don’t see that team coming in nothing higher than 4th place. Arroyo is at least a year away from competing against solid teams or the top of the HAAL.

  83. Bleachercoach Says:

All this ACCAL talk is a bunch a over rated hype for Berkeley. They shound win this league every year hands down ,they play in a league of Div III schools. Richmond High is the next largest in enrollment over 1400 kids less. Then to add insult to injury they pick a weak Div I team for a preseason game and if it was not for the lack of organization in the OAL they would have played a weak team from Oakland. Instead they are being forced to play Marin Catholic a Div IV school who according to this blogg has no athletes but yet still playd well in last years State game and will be good enough to pound the stingerless Yellowjackets

  84. PERKIN Says:

I don’t remember reading that Marin Catholic has no athletes just based on whats coming back from last year they’re loaded. Returning Allstaters #75 & #90 plus that #4 is gonna be a stud & can’t believe that he’s not their QB. #21 & #48 should be real good also. I heard that they changed their offensive scheme but it shouldn’t matter they’re loaded. I heard no players going both ways just based on the camps they’ve had this year.

  85. island02 Says:

Perkins , Alameda was at 1 contact camp this summer, the Competitive Edge at Sonoma State. I wasn’t able to attend because of work, I haven’t seen any film on that camp yet. Points well taken though , thank you.

  86. island02 Says:

Chalktalk, you’re absolutely right, and I’ve been working on that track stride this summer. We’ll see what happens , it should be an exciting year ! in the ACCAL.

  87. Coach Mac Says:

    Donjuan
    #70
Your comment on Mack not wanting to schedule you is directed at me because I do all of the scheduling. Firstly coach JB coached together at Castlemont and won it’s first Silverbowl. We are good friends and considered a game but due to scheduling conflicts we couldn’t do it. So that is why we wanted to scrimmage you. Lets set that record straight. Arroyo is a up and coming ball club with a lot of young talent. But by mo means should you be on this blog popping and talking trash about smacking somebody around. I know and love Coach JB like a little bother. He coached for me when he returned from hi natioal championship team Grand Valley State. I also recruited coach JB when I coached at Laney College.

  88. CHALKtalk Says:

    Perkin
If you have to take cheap shots or take late hits on the QB to get even with a loud mouth Donjuan01 its a sorry day in high school football. Im sure you dont want any kids hurt at a scrimage. Late hitting at a camp is BS ALL TEAMS HAVE QB’S ALL TEAMS HAVE PLAYERS.

  89. MURDOC Says:

    okay okay,

Got a chance to see Alameda. A few nice players. A couple tall WR’s. Good running back. However, that defense seems to be very slow and non athletic. B-high gets the nod for me.

    ACCAL:
    1. B-High
    2. Pinole
    3. EC
    4. Alameda
    5-7.The rest…

  90. Reggie Hammond Says:

    Novato Fan,

Marin Catholic has that league won by a mile. Sitting nice in 2nd place though.

  91. Reggie Hammond Says:

    HAAL

    1. SL
    2. Hayward
    3. BOD
    4. Arroyo
    5. SLz

  92. Bleachercoach Says:

PERKIN I am going all the way back to last years bloggs about all the athletes being in the Eastbay how there is no speed or talent in the Marin teams and I was being sarcastic. The point I am was trying to make is that the folks here want to blow smoke about how good there teams are going to be ,but I have not heard one objective real comment about their teams short comings.Teams like Berkeley, San Leandro and Encinal should win there leagues they are in the weakest leagues in the Eastbay. Yet they have some of the weakest non-league schedules are they just trying to pad there schedules? Do you really think that Berkerley wants to play Marin Catholic? They are coming in with a new coach they lost there star back and at best are a number 10 team in Div I. MC will keep them from a 10-0 season.

  93. ManDown Says:

If Encinal was still in the ACCAL would that league get more credibility?

  94. Bleachercoach Says:

ManDown yes it would ,atleast in my opinion. The BSAL would be a laughing stock without the Jets.

  95. island02 Says:

Mandown , I agree with bleachercoach, Encinal would definately add some strength to the ACCAL and make that league more respctable. Don’t sell Richmond too short, the coaches that are in place are doing a great job and really getting those kids competing and believing. Alameda will surprise alot of people, I haven’t been getting too involved with all the conversation on Alameda since my son is involved. I just assume read all your comments and discuss them with my son. Veryt good dialague amongst you all, keep it going!

  96. headphones Says:

island002 i had no idead he is your son.. but i did say he was one of the best rb in the bay coming back.. so i had to see alameda highs best win which was againest pinole valley.. and the TIE againest Odowd on tape.. first off in the pinole game cunningham got caught from the back count em 3 times… and againest o dowd SPECTACULAR.. alameda shoulda lost if it wasnt for him.. i am in love with his vison.. just not the BREAkaway speed. like the jahvid bests. ricky galvin, and etc..

  97. island02 Says:

Headphones its all good, your observations are taken in good spirit. He got caught by Henderson on the 60 yd run due to an aggravated groin he sustained when he stumbled. It bothered him the rest of the game , but he stuck it out. No, he doesn’t have Galvin, or Mario Brown top end speed, yet. LOL ! Nah man thanks for giving your opinions on these blogs it’s all good .

  98. headphones Says:

i like the kids game. is alameda going to use him at safety!? or what?

  99. island02 Says:

Headphones, wolb or corner. He’s played olb his freshman and jv years, and wasn’t used on defense at all last season. Thanks for your comments.

  100. CHALKtalk Says:

Didnt you see roberson walk RICKY down in the playoff game last year there’s speed and then there’s gears LOL

  101. headphones Says:

i wasnt comparing the two guys. THen you have players like oliver from castro valley who was a track star but not a football player.. i know speed when i see it.. galvin is a fast guy.. but no where near best… but he should be respected for his speed.. maybe a better comparsion would of been DEantony thomas from crenshaw high school

  102. JB"DON" Says:

  110. ManDown Says:

Why did Encinal leave the ACCAL anyway? Anyone know? Personally I think they have nothing to gain by being in the BSAL and the ACCAL would be a better fit for them.

  111. PERKIN Says:

Why is the ACCAL a better fit?

  112. PERKIN Says:

The year after Encinal left that league it was in the the toilet they still played the 2nd best team in that league in 08. BSAL was really up in 2008 for whats thats worth I think Encinal just had some great players. Last year they played the 2nd & 3rd best team whats the point in playing the rest?

Winning league has such hige ramifications, automatic play-off birth home field through out even if you play a higher seed. B-High doesn’t win league in 08 I don’t think they make the play-offs. I think Encinal would have beat them in 08 but lost to them in 09.

I just think each league should have a stud team in it to legitimize it. Think in 2008 Piedmont would have won the BSAL. Just say Encinal still has that same strength of schedule meaning a higher seed then Piedmont they would have had to travel to Piedmont in the play-offs. Thats not an easy place to win they play great at home gave Encinal a great game that year. Piedmont plays in a weaker league & would get rewarded with a home game against a higher seed that wouldn’t be a good thing if your an Encinal fan.

  113. ManDown Says:

Because I think the ACCAL talent level is better than the BSAL and for Encinal, playing all those bigger schools would probably help them get to a state game if they went that far. Me personally I think that if Encinal was still in the ACCAL they would have taken that league the past two years like that did the BSAL. I would love to see Encinal and Berkeley High play. I think Encinal would get them by 7.

  114. old former meddling coach. Says:

The last year Encinal was in the ACCAL was the 07-08 season and finished 9-3 2nd to Berkeley in league play but finishing with a better record overall. Because of a reorganization they were moved to the BSAL against Coach Joe’s protests. That year the Jets Made it to the D3 2nd round losing to a solid Capolindo team. You all know what happend the next year. Jet Pride!

  115. PERKIN Says:

The bottom of the ACCAL is terrible who wants to play them. JFK is up & down heard they have a good team this year I hear. ALbany is as bad as it gets. Swettt competes & can give competitive games at times. Those being the bottom of the barrel in the BSAL.

Richmond, Hercules, DA, are just not worth the price of admission.

  116. PERKIN Says:

I hear Encinal is gonna make a push to be the 8th team in the DFAL when NCS realigns. Now it would be fun to watch them compete in that league. I don’t think those team would let Encinal in.

  117. headphones Says:

CHalk talk.. honestly your an idoit…….. nitros???? feets Gearss.. like were driving a car or something… i can honestly say your an idoit… and you posted your comment at 5:47??? l soooooooooooooooo??? does #108 apply to you too?? Lol.. idoit..Smfh

  118. ManDown Says:

I see what you are saying PERKIN. That makes sense. The DFAL? Wow! That would be great if they could pull that off. That league is alreay strong and to add Encinal would be crazy!

  119. Bleachercoach Says:

I think Encinal moving to the DFAL is a joke. It would be like the SJS playoffs with all the best teams playing each other and knocking better teasms out and letting weaker teams from other leagues in I cannot see that happening.

I would like to see the OAL join the NCS and then realign the leagues. The OAL teams will NEVER EVER get a shot in a state game without joining the NCS period end of story. If the OAL where to join the NCS they would have a real reason to complain if an Oakland team made it through the NCS playoffs and didnt get picked. Then the leagues could realign something like Alameda,Encinal,Fremont(Oak), Oakland High,Oakland Tec and Mac. Move Castlemont to the HAAL and Skyline to the ACCAL

  120. EBfootball Says:

    @bleachercoach
The OAL has a legitimate of making the state game (in theory) since only section champs qualify. Since it is only a 6 team league they have 5 non-league games. They could schedule teams in contention for the D2 State game from SJS, NCS, and CCS and could qualify from head-to-head competition. But too bad they’re not that good anymore. Zo and Beam had the best chance of pulling that off.

  121. Bleachercoach Says:

EBfootball I know in theory they can make a state appearance but really would a 10-0 Oakland team who only played in the OAL have a better chance than an Oakland team that was 12-0 and played through the NCS D II or III playoffs.

  122. EBfootball Says:

Like I said, it’s all about who they play in the non-league.

I think the OAL would prefer to remain their own league. Last year when they almost joined the NCS a lot of Oakalnd people resisted because they thought it meant the league would be disolved. But only meant their section status would change. The OAL commisioner and the press (sorry guys) didn’t do much to let people know what was really going on. The OAL would have lost his job and the Tribune wouldn’t have a good story.

  123. Bleachercoach Says:

EBfootball they other advantage the OAL would have in joining the NCS is the ability to send more than one team to the playoffs Mac would be a Div IV school Castlemont and Fremont are Div III Oakland and Tech would be Div II and Skyline would be Div I. Mac of course would be the biggest winner in this ,they would be in the small school division and over the last 5 years have had some of the best teams coming in the OAL

  124. PERKIN Says:

First I’m all for the OAL joining the NCS & I like Jimmy Durkin’s odea of having Tech, B-High, Skyline & San Leandro, Alameda, & O-High in some big league then aligning the smaller schools Encinal, MAc, Fremont, Castlemont, O’dowd, Piedmont, or something like that.

But in 06 if MAC would have beat Madera they had a arguement to go over Cardinal Newman. If they some how would have beat Crenshaw who murdered them 42-0 I think they go hands down. They would have beat another section winner in Lincoln(not saying much but it is beating another section champ) the same way Cardinal Newman beat Hayward.

Cardinal Newman went the tougher route in the play-offs by far & would have deserved to go but those committees seem to give up a lot to undefeated teams. No doubt Novato goes in 06 if they beat Foothill.

All the coaches on here need to let the ego go when they hear comments from other people becasue they have no clue how u work ur program.

Coach Mac, same to you, you are a good coach and u need not to respond or explain urself to those who don’t matter. Sounds like it was a player just talking smack. Some people do too much on here and say too much, and no need to respond to nonsense. i know u don’t know me but at the same time, i know how hard it is to be a HS coach! everyone has an opinion!!!!!

#1 EBAL – no question and not even close
#2 BVAL – very easy 2nd choice as well
    #3 Sonoma County – 4 10+ ratings and only 2 negatives
#4 North Bay – this where gets tough but 4 solid playoff teams
#5 MVAL – with emergence of american have 5 potential playoff teams…mission and irvington hurt them overall
#6 Marin county – kind of top heavy but overall not a ton of pushovers
#7 DVAL – tough call here but i think concord is a rising team
#8 – DFAL – slightly over other leagues because of top to bottom competiveness
#9 ACCAL – over bay shore because there bad arent as bad as bay shores
    #10 bay shore
#11 bay – 4 playoff teams the rest bad

  141. Bleachercoach Says:

norcalfbal looks like you did alot of work on this, but there are a few changes you may not be aware of. The NCS changed the rules for petitioning up, you can now only petition up one Div. So Cardinal Newman will be Div III which is a huge game changer in that Division. Also there is talk that Marin Catholic will not petition up and will stay Div IV ( They could get another bowl birth there). The deadline for petitions is Sept. 17.

As far as your DIII rankings I think you are way off on BOD and Encinal. BOD was 4-6 last season they do not return there QB or running back and there JV team was 4-6 last season I dont think there new coach puts them in the 9 hole I would put Fortuna there. Encinal is a tough pick this season they do return much of there huge O-line but lost there center for the last 3 years and the QB. Also unlike the previous two seasons the Jets have been loaded with weapons D1 talent at QB, Saftey and Linebacker not to metion 3 speedsters in the backfield with a QB that could take off with the ball himself. This year they return Jonathan Allen who is fast but not very big and who maybe called upon more than one one person the last 2 seasons. I see the Jets winning the BSAL but not by huge margins if you look back into 08-09 and 09-10 you will see a smaller margin a victory in most games.

  142. EHS Logger Says:

D3 is going to be interesting. In addition to the changes already posted Fortuna drops to D4 with the enrollment chnges. Arroyo is listed as D2.

  143. Bleachercoach Says:

EHS I checked the enrollments on the CIF NCS web site before I posted and missed that you are right they lost alot of kids ty

  144. Coach Trot Says:

Cif website has arroyo d2 as of march 9, 2010 by only 20 students… Calpreps has them in D1…Anyone know which one is correct???

  145. billjohnson Says:

coach trot is the bellarmine game gonna b competitive? u guys havent fallen off as much as skyline but you guys dont beat teams that can atleast complete a pass.san leandro 1 n done come ncs time!

  146. billjohnson Says:

it’s time for marin catholic & cardinal newman 2 get it on! i believe marin catholic will stay d4 to avoid playin c.n.

  147. EHS Logger Says:

NCS-CIF has the latest enrollment info, as of March 2010. The numbers shouldn’t change as it is school enrollment from the previous fall. It appears that calpreps has not caught up with NCS changes.

  148. billjohnson Says:

wats goin on wit bod hardy runnin same o same d? he better win more games than last year or he’s an a$$**le

  149. hornetfan Says:

island02 any news on who is calling the defense 4 us this season? what can you tell me about our 1st 2 opponents newark & o’dowd?

  150. 617lemon Says:

when it’s all said n done fremont will be silver bowl champs!

  151. Coach Trot Says:

Bill- Competitive??? Were working hard to go out there and come home with the WIN!!
No comment on the skyline remark..

Playoffs has been a huge problem for us as of late, hopefully this year we can get back to the tournament and execute better.. We’ve looked like we were jus happy to be there the last few yrs…Gotta turn that around..

    Pirate Pride!!!!

  152. billjohnson Says:

coach trot not runnin that offense! playoffs? looks like non-league been a problem too. havent had a quality win in non-league since ’05.

  153. billjohnson Says:

i used to have alot of respect 4 s.l wen calcogno was there but since bowers been there it’s in a steady decline. not gettin the players? coaching? help me know y you guys have fallen coach trot?

  154. brandonbeard Says:

Bill Johnson, what are you talking about? San leandro has been a good program since calcagno left, and if thats the point, then whats the problem at Chabot, they arent competing for the JC national Championship!!!It takes time for programs to build up, have you ever coached football before? just asking becasue u have such hard opinions about coaches, but have u ever been a head coach?

  155. brandonbeard Says:

o # 150, fremont will be very young this year and they will not win the OAL, it will be Mack based on their experince, or Tech based on their Defense.

  156. island02 Says:

Hornetfan…..Coach Rochlin will be calling the defense as for our first 2 games, Newark doesn’t look too exciting we should be able to run the ball again, we just need to eliminate the TO’s. BOD, again our offense should go against their D and without Mario, and their QB they’re not returning much on offense. They have a beast at def end and Ward at LB, but coming off a 4-6 with a 4-6 jv team Coach Nickerson has his work cut out for him.

  157. Bill Johnson is a FLUFFER Says:

Bill Johnson anywhere, any time. You always hating on SL. Come down here to my spot on Bancroft and I’ll teach you some respect. Trick!

  158. Coach Trot Says:

Bill- Not sure what “Coach trot not runnin the offense” means? is that a question.. Non league has been tough by design to help us prepare for lge.. Coach Bowers goes out and gets the toughest games possible.. that may have sumthing to do with non lge record…

Unless your an opposing coach on our schedule this season then your level of respect for our program is of “0″ concern to us.. and even then it’s minimal..

    Pirate Pride..

  159. CHALKtalk Says:

COACH Trot why is BILLY on ur helmet. LMAO
IT seems 2 be some history behind these statement.
Maybe a former coach or friend maybe even a parent. Is he questioning ur coaching ablity man this is some fun bs

One thing i can tell u is BOD got some real coaching over there. I hope the kids can produce. I’ve seen the coaches at 2 different camp and they are dead on.
the HAAL is up for grabs. SO
GRAB A HAND FULL ON JERSEY AND HOPE THE REF. DONT SEE YOU.

  160. Coach Trot Says:

Chalktalk- Dont know and dont care…I love football and can talk shop with other football lovers during the offseason All day on here… The price u pay for that is sometime’s hearing from people that want to be critical of what your doing … comes with the territory…

All the blogging stops in a few weeks…

  161. Bill Johnson is a FLUFFER Says:

Bill Johnson is hater of all coaches & programs in the East bay. He attacks everyone on here, every year, while he ain’t never played, coached, or led anybody. Just another big mouth whose done nothin’ in his life. He gets on blogs & spits hate on people he don’t know & things he has no knowldge of. Bill Johnson come down to SL & we’ll help you to become a more righteous person. Just sayin, we want to help you, come on down.

  162. billjohnson Says:

i state the facts. bowens has had a tough non-league but who cares if u never win a tough game. mission san jose could play that non-league like u an lose wats that prove? the wing-t is outdated coach trot san leandro use to b a power in ncs d-1 now there 1 n done.trot would u even make the playoffs if u were n the ebal? i’ll let u tell it!

  163. billjohnson Says:

chalktalk wat have u seen from bod that’s got u excited? new scheme? certain player?

  164. Coach Trot Says:

I dont live in the past and i dont play the wat if game…. We play in the league were in…Wing -T? Your entitled to your opinion..

  165. CHALKtalk Says:

    BILLY
The DB they got is lock down, great feet good speed, great head and body coordination. dont throw on that side come season.and they got a run back and a linebacker both lines look suspect tho.

whats all this talk about the win g T

  166. headphones Says:

so Chalktalk you were a WEak OLd BOD player hahaha.. SMH.. tryingg to be all under cover

  167. ManDown Says:

I agree with the comment about San Leandro. They haven’t been racking up the wins like they used to. I see the same athletes but not wins. I like Bowers but all he does is beat the HAAL and thats not saying much.

  168. ManDown Says:

Will this be the last season for Encinal? I heard a while back that the school will be closing. If so what happens to all the kids and coaches? Will they have to attend Alameda? Anyone else hear about this?

  169. Bill Johnson is a FLUFFER Says:

Bill “$9!the@d” Johnson, you just proved you don’t know football. If the Wing T was dead then why do we keep winning with it? De La Salle runs the Veer. My Grandpa ran the veer! & De La is still winning with an “old” offense. What does that tell you? Nothing is dead, coaches teach it & the players do it & make it work. You “$9!the@d” stick to Madden, you know nothin bout the real game.

  170. Bill Johnson is a FLUFFER Says:

Hey “s9ithe@d” here is a fact for you. You never played or coached so stfu. Coach Trot been coaching good for years, probably not as long as you been runnin your mouth talkin out your a$$$, but he’s good & we win. HAAL been smashin on the OAL for years now & we dominate the HAAL. So go add that up “s9ithead” & then share with us some more of your “facts”. Trick.

  171. PERKIN Says:

SL really haven’t had the athletes they use to. They definitlety have good athletes. They use to be long lanky a lot of speed. They still have pretty big & physical lines. Castlemont’s team in 2008 was how SL use to look. MAybe a lot of East Oakland kids are staying home.

  172. KillerD Says:

The Alameda School District is apparently setting things up for Encinal to take the fall in 2011.

Reading online about their Measure H parcel tax in Alameda failed and their school board recommended maybe trying another parcel tax on the ballot in 2011, maybe. But for now, drafting plans to close Encinal.

Problems like these are becoming way too familiar, see MDUSD and others like it.

Unless Bill Gates donates several millions bucks to the Alameda School District or somebody else like him, this will be Encinal’s last football season bar none.

Their coach has done a great job for that program and I cannot forsee so many excellent head coaching jobs opening up after the 2010 season, like there was after the 2009 season.

But, even with fewer projected openings to happen after 2010 I believe more than one administrator would have to look at Coach Tenorio as a very attractive candidate and would pull the trigger to get him before somebody else snaps him up.

A “mayday” call for the Encinal Jets is a sad day for eastbay football, especially for those kids.

  173. CHALKtalk Says:

I believe coach trot went to the championship game his first season was that the east oakland speed. or the wing -t

  174. Coach Trot Says:

We have been blessed with great athletes yr in and yr out @ san Leandro.. The 1 differnce that sticks out betwwen the 05 team Vs The teams sense then is the attitude and BUY In from ALL the players top to bottom.. Dont get me wrong we have lost sum great coach’s but We are Coaching jus as hard Now if not harder as we were then…

Good News Is this Core we have now is showing similar BUY In so Far…

    Prite Pride!!!

  175. ManDown Says:

I hope it works out for you guys Coach Trot. You have some good players over there at San Leandro. Why aren’t players “BUYING IN” to a program that has had so much success in the past? That is strange for that to happen to a former power in NCS.

  176. Coach Trot Says:

Man Down- Hard to pin down an answer to “why”… 1 factor is the Leadership in 05 was tremendous.. They set the tone and held everyone on the team accountable + they were our best players.. They controlled that locker in a positive way that built a family atmosphere..

Lately it’s been a little different..Leaders have been hard to come by… The best player’s arent the guys always coming to practice and doing things leaders need to do…(So they get benched) And when a guy who is not 1 of yourr best players steps up to lead the effect and reponse can be different and negative..

But, I believe that is behind us.. this 2010 team Is going to Surprise sum people.. I’ll leave it at that..

    Pirate Pride!!!!

  177. CHALKtalk Says:

Man down let not open up that can of worms
the wing-t is ready to take fight. I can’t believe that no coach in the HAAL can stop the first offensive ever ran in the history of football. it show the coaching level in the Haal. some coaches think just cuz they yell out play that makes them coordinators. IM SAY WHEN U KILL A CHICKEN U BREAK THE NECK THEN PUCK THE WING-T

  178. CHALKtalk Says:

    BUT IM NO EXPERT

  179. Old School Pirate Says:

Coach Trot is it true that you were part of an undefeated team?

  180. BOD alum '97 Says:

I think that the parents are to blame if the kids don’t buy in to a winning program. Look at what happened at O’Dowd. The parents and administrators forced out a proven winner in Coach P.

I hope he comes back to O’Dowd & wins with a bad Mt.Eden team. I’m sure, that would be the most satisfying win of his career. GO COACH P!!!!

  181. ManDown Says:

I see Coach Trot, thats a problem when your best players are not responsible and don’t show up to practice. It can break a team and make things difficult for coaches and players who are working hard everyday to be good. Its a shame that one of the better programs in the area had to go through something like that after all the success and great leadership from past teams. No juniors or sophomores on that 05 team picked up anything from the leaders? You would think it would just trickle down every year but in some cases it doesn’t

  182. donttrip Says:

Does anyone know why Coach Perenon got fired from BOD?

  186. ManDown Says:

Charter School? Wow. How will that effect the team?

  187. ManDown Says:

Coach Trot, Thats Terrible! Good luck to you and your team this season and continue to dominate the HAAL.

  190. Bleachercoach Says:

Its my understanding that Encinal already has the School of the Arts charter program on site. Novato also has this and it increases the enrollment unfarily ,by and large students in these programs do not play sports do to the large time committment they already take but there enrollment get added to the overall student body. So in reality EHS could be Div IV but instead get pushed to Div III

  191. ManDown Says:

Wow Bleacher Coach I didn’t know all that. Maybe thats a reason why they only have 25 man rosters.

  192. Old School Pirate Says:

It counts, glad to see an old pirate back on the field. Keep those kids in line John John.

  193. bbfan2 Says:

BOD alum, was Coach P’s program really a winning program the last few years? They have a new coach and hopefully, he’s given the same “taking over a new program cushion” it seems all the other coaches are being given on here, otherwise, it will just seem like people are just “hatin”

  194. Bleachercoach Says:

Iam not sure why the turnout is so low at Encinal. Other Div III and even IV schools with similar or lower enrollments have larger rosters but it has always been like that at EHS.

  195. Coach Trot Says:

    Old School Pirate–

LOL!!!! Are u an old teammate?

  196. c.sparks Says:

Encinal won the NCS champsionship with only 22 players in 2008.. amazing

  197. ManDown Says:

They also lost an NCS championship with only 22 players in 09. So I guess it worked out one year but the next not so much…

  198. c.sparks Says:

and wow leacher coach and mandown its always been like this? for EHS? can they petetion down for D4?

  199. Old School Pirate Says:

Would love to bro but I’m back in Texas.

  202. EBfootball Says:

Charter schools are good for finances because they dont have to follow the same rules public schools do. This can be good or bad but corners can be cut financially. I believe Encinal isn’t going anywhere.

  203. bhsfan Says:

when galvin was caught from behind by roberson he was still running on a bad ankle. he came out to track n march and almost made to the state meet. he ran 10.91 bet roberson wont catch him now lol, but he now wishes he wouldve ran track at an earlier age. not sure if too many players talked about on this blog has that breakaway speed like the 2 sprinters from freedom, the twins at granada, garrick from castro valley, marcus peters from mac, these kids have top notch speed.

  204. OALFAN Says:

Bill Johnson welcome back! I have been waiting for you to get back on here. What is your breakdown of the OAL?

  209. FootballFan Says:

Thompson was also a coach at Acalanes… I don’t know why the story didn’t mention it but he turned that program around as well. They went to something like 6 straight NCS playoffs after never having been before around 2002-2006

  210. mt. eden player Says:

If you really want to know the real deal with what is going on at Mt. Eden, check it out at 345pm at Mt. Eden High. Check out all the drama that goes on between Ron Thompson, Paul Perenon and Dan Lloyd with the football players.

  211. YoMama Says:

Mt. Eden needs drama- under achievers for years- Coach P. will change that, along with Ron Thompson- those guys coached and played on some very successful teams.
Football is sacrifice, no one said pratice was any fun. If you don’t like drama, quit.

  212. PERKIN Says:

What drama goes on at Mt. Eden?? Don’t tell me they argue in front of the kids & these guys are going in 3 separate directions. Co-Head Coaches might be 1 Chief too many.

  213. EB FB FAN Says:

    Drama at Mt Eden …

I know both Coach Thompson and Coach Perenon well. They were brought in to change the direction of the football program there. YoMama is dead on with the “under achievers for years” take. I will bet that some of the players wanted the situation at ME to remain the same as it has been since Coach Rodriguez and Coach Thompson left after the ’07 season. No way were Thompson and Perenon going to go with status quo. The administration believed, correctly, that the program needed new direction with experienced, veteran, mature and successful adults providing appropriate guidance and leadership.

The players need to get on board with the new direction. The hold over coaches from the previous staff must also show maturity and follow suit (or respectfully leave for other opportunities).

I have talked to both Thompson and Perenon. Don’t be misled by the misinformed or those who are unhappy with the new direction of ME football. Both Thompson and Perenon are ON THE SAME PAGE with their vision and approach for this football program and its players. Behavior, academic integrity (attendign classes, achieving at an acceptable level in school),self discipline, attendance at all practices, playing with class and pride will become the benchmarks for evaluating Mt. Eden football under Thompson and Perenon. These two men (along with Dan Lloyd and the lower level staff) are committed to getting it done the right way. And they have the full support of the administration.

My hope for Mt Eden is that the players who truly want to “play football” in high school come to value and appreciate what these new coaches will bring and get over the “drama”. My opinion is that having both Thompson and Perenon in charge could not be better for Mt Eden, its players, its football program and the entire school community. No Perkin, co-head coaches is just right for this situation. Might not be the best fit for all situations, but, just right for this one at Mt Eden. Give it time.

  214. berryzito Says:

Ron Thompson coached Acalanes to 5 straight NCS SEMIFINAL games, the only other school to do that during those years was DLS. Ron is a great coach and he will turn the program around at MT.E. He won more games at acalanes in 5 years, than the 20 years before at aca.

  215. Monarch 4 Life! Says:

What is actually going on at Mt.Eden? What “drama” are you talking about? The coaches aren’t getting along? The players ain’t listening to Perenon? Thompson?? There are coaches from the previous staff that were fired & brought back? It all sounds like a soap opera.

Or is the real question can Thompson handle our “types” of athlete. Maybe it’s time to head back home to Acalanes. My boy is in 8th grade & Logan is looking a lot more attractive than my school. But, I’m not going to have him become a victim of a soap opera.

  216. EB FB FAN Says:

    Monarch 4 Life …

I would suggest that you re-read my previous post and the post from YoMama.

The coaches hired by the current athletic director and administration are all on the same page. It is the responsibility of the players to follow the directives of the coaches. It is apparent that what had been going on at Mt Eden in football the past few seasons was anything less than acceptable (see YoMama’s post) and changes needed to be made.
Coaches from the previous staff, in fact, walked out when they were not given the job. Thompson offered them the opportunity to return and join the new staff. It is up to those coaches to get on board with the direction Thompson and Perenon are taking the program in, not anything else.

I am curious, Monarch 4 Life. What are your “types”of athletes? I would hope that they are kids who want to play football, show up every day to practice and improve their skills, listen to what the coaches are directing them to do, then go do what it is they are asked to do with an attitude relevant to playing football. Keep it simple: let the coaches who were brought in to change the direction of the program do their job. Sometimes programs need to be restructured and the kids need a new approach with new standards and expectations established for them. Mt Eden has seriously underachieved in the recent past. Both Thompson and Perenon KNOW SUCCESS. But, more importantly, they know how to ACHIEVE SUCCESS. You are fortunate to have them at Mt Eden. The changes will not take place over night. But, the future for Mt Eden football is much brighter with the new staff and the new direction under Thompson and Perenon. This is no soap opera. It is what usually happens when there is resistance to change. Have faith. Both these guys are proven winners.

  217. Monarch 4 Life! Says:

I was told Thompson quit as the Hayward High head coach after the players wouldn’t follow his directives. So, if he’s having trouble again with Hayward kids then this would be the 2nd time it’s happened. The kids from Acalanes are different from our kids. We are a working blue collar city. They live in a city where no one knows what it’s like to ride the AC Transit.

How in the heck did Mt.Eden’s administration hire Thompson as the head coach when they knew he quit a similar post? What background check did they do? Did they even know about it? Perenon should have been the easy choice. I don’t understand the co-head thing.

Hold over coaches acting immature? Who are they & why would they be brought back if they were immature? Seems like another bad decisin made by??? Thompson? Perenon? Lloyd? Admin? I don’t get it.

  218. EB FB FAN Says:

    Monarch 4 Life!

Could the situation at Mt Eden be that the players are not responding to the coaching changes and coaching styles of the new coaches? Looking at recent past results at Mt Eden in football might suggest that the players need to be open and receptive to what the new coaches are bringing. The statement about Hayward kids, a blue collar community and AC Transit amount to excuses for the failures that have occurred in the program prior to this coaching change. The approach and attitude that has existed at Mt Eden in football spoke loudly that a change was necessary – both a change in football culture and leadership and a change in the manner in which the players approached the sport of football.

What does Mt Eden want in its football program? We all know what has been the accepted standard over the past few years – underachieving, as YoMama put it. I would also speculate that the underachieving went deeper than just football wins and lossess. Change is difficult. Change can be uncomfortable. Making changes can be unpopular. But this program has underachieved. The talent level does not reflect the win-loss record. How do the players do in school? What is their behavior like on campus? Do they treat each other with respect? I would suggest to you that all of these components in a high school sports program will be addressed with new standards and expectations established under the new coaches. That is what I would hope for if my child was playing football at mt Eden!

I would be less concerned with what transpired between Thompson and Hayward HS. I would be more concerned about supporting the coaches at Mt Eden. I also suggest that, had the players and staff at Hayward supported Coach Thompson, the Hayward program might be further along today, considering Coach Thompsons’ string of successes at his previous schools. Maybe a few NCS wins and another banner?

Have you actually gone over to Mt Eden and had some communication with the new coaches? I would encourage you to dialogue with Thompson and Perenon, look them in the eyes and feel their passion and commitment to this program and to the kids at Mt Eden. Many of your questions would then be answered!

  219. Monarch 4 Life! Says:

I am an alum. I want Mt.Eden to be successful. But my son is my son. I will not send him into a situation next year where the coaches & kids are not on the same page just b/c I went to school there. Logan seems to be a better place to go for a good experience in football, track,& especially academics. Mt.Eden has changed a lot & not for the better. I think I have no choice but to move him. Good luck on the season EB.

  220. EB FB FAN Says:

    Monarch 4 Life!

To make Mt Eden football a better place, a better experience and to change the culture is why the admin brought in the new coaches. I respect that you have to do what you have to do. I believe that Coaches Thompson and Perenon will make Mt Eden a better situation. Like I have stated in previous posts, it will take time. The fact that we are on this blog talking about Mt Eden is evidence that good things are happening there. Just remember the condition of the football program when the new coaches came in. I trust that these new coaches will make it better, although the process will take time and will probably involve more difficulties before it gets better. The kids that do remain and choose to be involved in football at Mt Eden will be on the same page with the coaches. That is a given!

  221. HAAL Fan Says:

EB FB FAN is 100% correct in his perception of the team and the direction the program is headed in. I refuse to allow anyone to believe my former head coach, Jesse Rodriguez, was anything but a winner. He just had teams that didn’t buy in to the core character values he was trying to instill in his players. The same values that are being urged upon by these new coaches. How quickly everyone forgets that my team in 2006-2007 went 8-2 (7-1 in league) and there were two things different on that team than any other recent Mt. Eden team before it, kids who bought into what being a “Monarch” under Coach Rod meant and RON THOMPSON! That man is defensively “sharp” to say the least. ALL HE DOES IS WIN! You can line kids up in positions to be successful, you can design fool-proof schemes, and you can even sub in packages so that your players are never physically outmatched on the field. BUT, at the end of the day, it’s gonna take the acquired moral character taken from a program AND the acquired skill set from a program TOGETHER to rack up victories, on and off the field. THAT is what these new coaches are all about and nobody can convince me otherwise.

    Bravo HAAL Fan!!

I am with you 100% regarding Coach Rod – a great coach, motivator and leader for Mt Eden. What happened after he left? How did it fall so far off the path in just two years? Why can’t the holdover coaches get on board with Thompson and Perenon? You hit another nail squarely on the head with your take on the new coaches. These men KNOW WHAT IT TAKES to get it done. Shame on the players, parents and other holdover coaches who are trying to hang on to what went on since Coach Rod left. I have been told that some players would rather have the Mt Eden program stay a mess than do what Thompson and Perenon are asking them to do to get better and improve. For example, I have heard that some players who are in severe academic difficulty are “boycotting” study halls set up on Wednesdays and Thursdays by Thompson and Perenon. What is that about? Hopefully, Monarch 4 Life does not mean to suggest that blue collar Hayward kids don’t need extra help with their academics and that Thompson does not understand them when they make the decision to skip study hall.

Thank you, HAAL Fan, for putting the final stamp on what is really going on as Thompson and Perenon work to change the culture at Mt Eden and return the football program to the standards and values established by Coach Rod. It will take time, but EVERYONE at Mt Eden should be rejoicing that they have Thompson and Perenon there to create a positive and winning environment!

Rodriguez was not a winner at Mt.Eden. Overall, he lost more games than he won. One season does not make you a winner. Coach Benevidez was a winner. Back in the mid-80s his hoop teams were among the best in Northern California. My senior year we went 34-1. No one could touch us. Benevidez was an old school general Patton. That’s what these kids need now.

You should evaluate Coach Rodriguez more on what he accomplished to get Mt Eden to 8-2 in ’06 than his overall win-loss record. He brought stability, values and a higher set of standards to a marginally successful football program. The kids did respond to him.

BTW, Thompson and Perenon bring just what you believe “… these kids need now”.

  225. Monarch 4 Life! Says:

    General Patton never quit.

  226. Monarch 4 Life! Says:

Rodriguez may have done well that year, but every time I checked their record at the end of the season they were under .500. I don’t know him, maybe he was a likeable person and inspired kids but please, Rodriguez was not a winner on the field. Benevidez was a winner. He was disliked by some but he had their respect and he motivated them to win, Check out his track record at Mt.Eden Benavidez won in every sport that he coached. They need to find Benevidez and hire him. I would pay to see that.

  227. HAAL Fan Says:

Coach Benevidez is, and always will be, a Mt. Eden legend. It is unfair to take those standards and apply them to another program. There’s only a handful of coaches in any of the bay area’s sports programs in the past thirty years who live up to those standards. Coach Rod may not have been turning out 8 and 9 win seasons every year but he won more games in his stint there than any number of coaches before him besides … BENEVIDEZ himself. You went to school there in the 90′s, you know what Mt. Eden football used to represent. Coach’s biggest obstacle is the same obstacle that these new, quality coaches are trying to hurdle today. They’re trying to change the culture of a school that is used to doing things THE WRONG WAY. After Rod left, I never would’ve imagined that the program would’ve nosedived like it did. But, a couple of wrong guys in a couple of right spots turns any ideal situation into a disaster. It’s hard to believe how people would want to cling to a frame of mind that brought so much despair to a program. Monarch 4 Life! I do understand your will to win and competitive spirit, seeing as how it was fostered by a great coach such as Benevidez, but trust me, as a fellow Mt. Eden alum, these coaches teach the same thing that he did. Maybe not as well, but not many others ever will do it as well as he did.

  228. Don Juan Says:

Mt.Eden is weak. They lost every game last year, and from the sounds of it they gonna lose every game this year and the next. Maybe they can ask to move down into the Crusaders’ PAL league.

  229. Don Juan Says:

OALFAN, you don’t know a damn thing about High school ball. You picked Mt.Eden to finish in 4th place? They’re goin to finish like 12th in a 9 team league. AAAAAHAHHAHHAHAHA!

  230. M Daddy Says:

Arroyo talks way too much for a 1-1 team.

  231. Speed Coach Says:

Arroyo is now 1-2. Maybe they’ll learn to just close their mouth & play football.

  232. Lewelling Lou Says:

Well whaddya know Arroyo gets beat 35-20 by Newark Memorial. Weren’t you just talking trash about how Alameda got beat 59-10 to O’Dowd? Well, Alameda beat Newark Memorial? So what do you have to say now for your Arroyo Dons? Is 2010 still the year of the Dons? I guess we’ll find out this week when you play the Dragons. Give us another one of those sure-fire predictions.

  233. Don Juan Says:

    Arroyo 34 Bishop O’Dowd 21. I guarantee it.
