30Q-2-KICKOFF (No. 24): Will the HAAL still be run by Pirates?

Let’s take a full look at the Hayward Area Athletic League.

Will three-time defending champion San Leandro win another league title?

The Pirates have owned the HAAL since the minute Dennis Dixon first stepped on the field in a varsity game in 2000. He promptly led them to three straight HAAL titles and trips to the NCS 4A East Bay tittle game. Since 2000, San Leandro has won seven league titles, including four of the past five. Since 2005, the Pirates are 35-2 in the HAAL with the only two losses coming in 2006 when Hayward won the title and Mt. Eden took second (those teams handed the Pirates their lone losses).

Will this trend continue? At this point, San Leandro has to be considered the favorite. The Pirates may have lost HAAL Offensive Player of the Year George Roberson, but they return the league’s top quarterback in Chris Musni, a guy who threw for over 1,500 yards last year with 23 touchdowns against just eight interceptions. That’s pretty solid efficiency. San Leandro has always been good about finding a new back to plug into place, so I wouldn’t doubt they’ll be able to get some strong RB play from either seniors Kyrian Obidiegwu or Ellis Cummings. The defense only returns four starters, but still with that coaching staff I’m sure they’ll find a way to thrive.

After the Pirates you probably have to look to last year’s second place team Hayward. The Farmers return John Hughes in the backfield and have seven returning starters on a defense that gave up 17.9 points per game in its eight wins (although they allowed 47 per game in the three losses).

Bishop O’Dowd is certainly a wild card in this race. The Dragons always have talent and it’ll be interesting to see how new coach Hardy Nickerson will get this team going. Hardy Nickerson Jr. is beginning to get rave reviews as a linebacker as he enters his junior season and the Dragons have some skill position players back in RBs Trenton Trammell and and Tyrone Ward and WR Terrance King Jr. There’s definitely no reason to forget about the Dragons.

San Lorenzo is coming off a strong season despite its playoff snub with a 6-4 record. DT William Fukofuka is a big loss and it’ll be intriguing to see if the Rebels can build off last year and make another run at a playoff spot. Arroyo could be a sleeper as well as new coach James Barnes will certainly bring some energy to the sidelines (For those that haven’t seen him coach, get ready. It can be a lot of fun to observe). Having defending HAAL Defensive Player of the Year Micah McMurray doesn’t hurt either and Barnes will do his best to utilize his team speed.

Mt. Eden is yet another sleeper in this league because of the infusion of experienced coaching in Bill Bishop and of course Paul Perenon. If nothing else, this team will likely give you a fight for four quarters. Castro Valley and Tennyson will both be trying to get back on track in a season where the league seems to be as deep as it has in years.

that fact that SL has won 3 straight championship has everything 2 do with the coaching in the HAAL or the lack of. hopefully with the new coaching additions the PIRATES wing-t wont fly.

  • Coach Trot

    LMAO!!!!

  • CHALKtalk

i like chicken wings turkey wings buffalo wings even cornish hen wings but that wingT is for the birds

  • joe

    chalktalk, you are an idiot

the wing t is a great offense and teams rack up state and section championships with it every year. It just has to be coached properly. The deception of the offense and the blocking angles allow weaker teams to compete with teams who might be more physically gifted. Defending a wing t team shows me if a D Coordinator is worth anything or not, they have to be able to teach a defense and reads instead of just lining up 11 athletes and saying go get the ball, like so many coaches seem to do now a days

it forces defenses to play assignment football, very difficult to replicate in practice, and you can kill teams with PA pass as DB start to spy in the backfield instead of reading their keys

  • CHALKtalk

JOE U THE IDIOT IF U CANT STOP THE WING T
ALL U SO CALLED COACHES THAT CONFORM TO THIS OLD SYTLE OF THINKING TRY SOMETHING NEW DUMMY

  • YVFan08

CHALKtalk you need to calm down there. The WingT, or Double Wing, which is what Ygnacio Valley formally ran. There are plenty of teams throughout the US that run these offenses and have won section or even state titles. Ygnacio won 2 section titles running the offense, Marin Catholic ran the offense last year on their way to a state championship game. Tim Murphy, now the head coach at Clovis East, has won 3 section titles using the offense, and also has helped install the offense at many high schools throughout the nation. Check out http://www.coachtimmurphy.com . Bolles of Jacksonville, is home to Florida’s all time winningest coach and they run the WingT. Do not forget that also Bellermine of San Jose run the Double Wing, and has been quoted that he was inspired by Tim Murphy to bring in this offense.

  • Barney

Not sure why you pointed readers to Murphy’s website, there’s nothing there worthwhile.

From a FAN point of view, the double wing sucks. From the kids having fun, the double wing sucks. From a parent that has a gifted QB or WR, the double wing sucks.

From a winning percentage point of view, it’s hard to argue with it. My feeling is that coaches install the wing for themselves to notch wins rather than for the athletes on the squad to showcase talent and grow athletically. I think it is selfish coaching personally…

It’s not like Bellevue High School of Washington was the first team to beat the De La Salle Spartans after 13 unbeaten years using the Wing-T offense ….

    CHALKtalk,
    1. step away from the CAPSlock
    2. I don’t understand what you’re saying in the parentheses part but the reason is because in the league, the defensive players are to smart to really be deceived as much as college and high school players. It would work if ran occasionally but not a base offense. It is like the Wildcat. It worked for that game against NE for Miami, but has really not panned out other than that. Once people get to watch enough film, the offense becomes more one dementional because it is based on the run game and will rarely incorporate the passing game.
Also, it depends what version of the wing-T we’re talking about. Paul Johnson’s triple option version isn’t ran because the QB is to valuable to have running around. If you don’t plan on running the QB but still running the Wing-T, I think it limits the passing attack ability and we all know the league is mostly based on the passing game.

and HAAL Fan, the reason that Bellevue’s Wing-T really screwed with DLS was because the film they sent to DLS was of them running the spread or something that wasn’t anything like the Wing-T. So DLS went up unprepared and when Lad doesn’t get to prep, DLS has problems.

Barney – You sound a bit hypocritical . . . selfish coaching because it wins games and championships for your school??? That sounds pretty team-oriented. Fans out to see a spread offense, or parents out to see their kid “get his” . . . not that embodies selfishness. Put aside the egos, and what looks fun, and just accept that different styles work in different schools. A good coach will run what is right for his personnel. Some schools, that is wing-t; for others, that will be spread, or dive option. Teaching teamwork and how to be successful with others, those coaches are getting it right, even if it means running a boring offense, from a fan’s point of view. And for chalk talk, the league also doesn’t showcase any triple option offenses, or spread zone read offenses, because the defensive talent is too strong and deep. In the league, everyone runs very similar systems, and it comes down to execution, play-calling on the fly, and talent. High school and college coaches tend to be more creative when game-planning around their talent.

  • joe

too many fans on this board. You people need to understand that the Double Wing and Wing T are 2 completely different offenses.

Double wing is what YV ran in the past (what NG has been running as well)

Wing t is what bellevue runs, as well as nevada union(grass valley) and granada

double wing is based on the super power play, entire playside OL+TE block down or double, Fb kicks out EMLOS, and BSG and BST pull. Qb pitches to wing in motion and then leads up the hole. Built on just pure power and trying to put more meat at the point of attack than the other team. 3 yards and a cloud of dust. They will go for every 4th and short.

Wing t, is an offense based around misdirection, angle blocking, and pulling guards

Base plays are trap, bucksweep, and waggle pass. then you have the down series. the belly series. and all the counters. DW is pure force, wing t is about confusing the defense and misdirection.

    Chalk talk,
have another cold one, and find some bleachers to sit in until games start next friday night

  • inthetrenches

Have to admit the Wing-T is a solid offense IF! coached well with talent to run it. For example, Logan back in 08 ran it with Rashad Evans, Hayward ran it in 07 with their 3 headed dragon runnig backs which is the team who beat San Leandro. The list goes on and on because its a famous style throughout the NCS.

But just like any offense, its highly stopable. Now a days its installed into offenses that do not have the right athletes to run it, and the coachs not operating it properly.

chalktalk is a bod guy, i already argued with him.. he says idoitic things to try to send his message to the masses in which he is very ineffective. its pretty clear to me MR.Bod guy.. that san leandro owns that league. until somebody else from the haal knocks them off the top.. so quit your childish talk.. boyy..

    Predicted HAAL Finish:

    1. San Leandro (Bowers wins when he has enough talent and this year the Pirates have not as much as when Dixon was there, but enough to win the league. Bowers apparently being passed over for the O’dowd job will have him personally riled up, in addition to the natural rivalry vs. Dragons).

    2. Hayward (Farmers are not the same storied program they were when Moreno and company were there or before him even. But, they do have playmakers and a good staff, give the Farmer enough land to grow and the crops will rise to fruition this fall. They will challenge the Pirates for the title. Their game vs. San Leandro on October 15th looms large).

    3. Castro Valley (Best new stadium does help with recruiting talent to a point and more butts in the seats provides energy and enthusiasm for a once great program. Gone are the days when CV would Dive, Counter, Trap, Sweep and Play Action foes to death, but if the young staff can harness some outstanding talent and point them in the right direction, they should win 6 – 7 games).

    4. Bishop O’Dowd (At best the Dragons finish 2nd this year, however, for all of the negative off-season press BOD deservedly received this year for the ridiculously absurd process that resulted in the new regime, the snaring of Chris Turner of YV to run the offense was a feather in the cap of Nickerson and a good move. Turner can put points on the board and do it quickly. If they average 28 or more ppg, the Dragons can finish well, but if they don’t then a tumble awaits and a 5-5 record prevails).

    5. Arroyo (The romantic pick would be to move this year’s Dons up to 2nd or 3rd, but football is not a love story, instead it is a drama with only one winner usually. Barnes will help improve the underserved Dons, who have ample talent skipping around campus, and if enough D1 talent purchases what Barnes is selling, then Arroyo will be a powerhouse within three years. Look for Arroyo to pull off a couple of “upsets” but fall to San Leandro, Hayward, Castro Valley and a team that they should have beaten but are still too young to know how to close out the deal).

    6. Mt. Eden (What? Is this a prank? Nope and pay attention please. Thompson returns to the Monarchs and brings with him a secret weapon in Perenon. The former BOD coach must be rejuvenated and ready to take on all comers in the HAAL. Thompson is a well known defensive coach worthy of solid praise. Perenon has more wins under his belt than most head coaches have games coached (200+). Look for the Monarchs to get a few upsets and finish with 3 – 5 wins. An excellent turnaround in a bad situation that will have Perenon right back at the top of hiring list because wanton Athletic Directors prowl these boards and will be watching Mt. Eden closely in 2010).

    7. San Lorenzo (Down goes Frazier…Down goes Frazier! These Rebels are not going anywhere but down unfortunately. On a good year, the Rebels can end up on the Oakland Raiders home field, playing for the NCS title under a steady drizzle, like they’ve done before, seven years ago I believe. But that was a long time ago, things have changed and the Rebels will fall hard this year).

    8. Tennyson (Trouble fills the Lancers 2010 season with not enough talent and low numbers. Tennyson used to produce prodigious running backs and DL, but now that is a rare sight when they take the field. Going to be a long year for them).

Watch out for Arroyo, Im tellin you. The Dons are not underserved, they just haven’t had what Coach Barnes has brought to the table in the past few years, look for them to at least be in the top three in league this year. And yes also having the best player in the league (McMurray) helps out a lot to.

  • HAAL Fan

Interesting information about the scout tape switch, Moreau Fan. Also, let’s not throw my beloved Flexbone Triple Option in with the likes of the Wing-T. Just for my sake. Bottom line, any offense can be successful as long as you mold your approach around your personnel. As for the Wing-T, I played against that ’06 – ’07 Hayward High team and it goes to show what you can accomplish with the right kids in the right system. Lastly, thanks for giving my boys at Mt. Eden some credit, Killer D.

  • Inside the HAAL

I’ll start my preview of the league from the bottom up to symbolize how trash this league is.

Mt.Eden is the worst team in this league. They have less than 20 players out for varsity & no one wants to play there. I hear their coach is about to quit again like he did at Hayward.

Castro Valley sucks too. Anyone who actually watched this team get pounded by Hayward during the summer knows that they have no quality athletes. 1-9 fo’ sho.

Tennyson & San Lorenzo are jokes too, but they play in this weak-ass league they should get a couple of wins vs. CV & ME. I see them both of these losers tying 0-0 and goin 2-7-1.

Arroyo’s being turned into Castlemont by their OAL coaching staff gettin all these transfers & tryin to steal future Pirates. They don’t wanna play for you Barnes! They wanna be champions, not a Don. 4-6, by feeding on the crippled.

Hayward & BOD both have good players and should be a 6-4/7-3. Nickerson will teach them how to do it like the pros. Farmers are loaded with talent.

San Leandro has the best program from top to bottom. How many titles is it now?

  • MoreauFan1

    HAAL Fan,
I understand you’re point about the difference, I just said that because of the formation itself.

This is terribly off topic, but I would like to hear some opinion on this. How would Moreau fair in the HAAL now? We’re finally turning the ship around with this new young coaching staff and the coaching shifts in the HAAL, esp. BOD. Just wondering, especially from KillerD because he seems to pay attention to most leagues.

Your little rant about the Wing and HS offenses in general and your question in #10 is a clear demonstration you have really never coached.

    You’re just a fan and that’s OK.

  • brandonbeard

SL and BOD are the faorties to me!! I am sure Coach Nickerson will have his team ready to play just as Coach Boom will. I like what Jacob Wright is doing at SLZ, but not sure if they can be consistent! JB will have his guys playing hard at arroyo so i know they can compete now! Mt. Eden is rebuilding and sometimes it takes a while to get things going when ur building from the ground in a sense! Tennyson is still trying to find a consistent winning tradition but the kids have to want it. Coach Smith does a good job!

I LUV WHEN THEY BOO ME!!!
Ur right i wouldnt call coaching
more like a mental cleansing where you learn about balance leverage and power WHAT IS POWER well on the football field its KNOWLEDGE SPEED STRENGTH AND QUICKNESS !!! some player have a few of these qualities
other have them all and these are the great ones. knowledge doesnt have to be knowledge of the game, it can be knowledge and understanding the natural flow things. Like when a little kid knows exactly when to spin hurdle or shake, juke straight arm or lower the boom. SOME OF US ARE NATURALS we know the exact moment we have leverage and we administer our power( once again what is power KNOWLEDGE SPEED STRENGTH AND QUICKNESS !!!) all roads more like a dead end LMAO

Those are some strong words from a school that steals Oakland players for years, 1st of all we do not have any transfers at Arroyo at this time so don’t let that be the reason we win games, 2nd your future Priates stay in my area and you guys come and steal them out of Arroyo an SLZ back yard.
