SRV softball stars moving on

Two San Ramon Valley High softball players from the 2010 squad will play at Division I colleges.

Incoming Wolves senior Sara Pacioni has orally committed to East Carolina University, and 2010 graduate Kylie Day has signed with College of Charleston, S.C. Both Day and Pacioni were first-team all-East Bay Athletic League selections last season.

Day, a left-handed pitcher, has recovered from a left elbow injury that cost her the final third of her varsity season. She suffered nerve damage after being hit by a pitch.

Pacioni, who plays for the SoCal Pumas 18 Gold Softball team in Ventura, was a Wolves captain, along with Devon Bridges.

Day played summer ball with the All-American Sports Academy of Woodland.

Spartans open season No. 3 in Cal-Hi Sports Top 50

Cal-Hi Sports released its preseason football rankings today, and De La Salle slots in at No. 3 to begin the season. The Spartans are ranked behind Grant-Sacramento and the team they beat for the California Interscholastic Federation Open Division title last year, Crenshaw-Los Angeles.

Other East Bay teams to make the initial top 50 are Monte Vista (29) and San Ramon Valley (48). Casa Grande-Petaluma (46) and Marin Catholic-Kentfield (50) were other North Coast Section teams on the list. Pittsburg opens the season in the “on the bubble” category.

30Q-2-KICKOFF (No. 21): Heady stuff

Today, I’ll expand a little on a package that you might’ve seen in this weekend’s paper concerning head injuries in football.

With the NFL putting more of an emphasis on protecting players from serious head injuries, what will the trickle down effects be in the high school game?

30Q-2-KICKOFF (No. 19): Heading East

Today, we continue a look at the local leagues by heading over Kirker Pass and dropping into East Contra Costa.

Last year, Deer Valley went undefeated to claim the Bay Valley Athletic League title. Then, in the playoffs, Pittsburg made a run to the North Coast Section Division I  title game, a run that included a win over Deer Valley. Will it again be those two teams at the top, or will another squad step up and challenge in 2010?

Beware the Wolves

San Ramon Valley High football coach Mark Kessler believes he has “enough tools in the shed” to be a formidable force this season.

The Wolves boast nine returning defensive starters, and junior quarterback Zach Kline has received offers from Oregon State and four other schools, Kessler said.

Moreover, the Wolves may have the ultimate utlility in junior Michael Tagliaferri, who has orally committed to North Carolina as a lacrosse player. He was a first-team all-EBAL middie with the Wolves in 2010 with 53 goals and 41 assists.

Another interesting SRV tidbit is that the Wolves are fast becoming a West Coast connection to the University of North Dakota. Imagine that …

Last year’s SRV quarterback Chris Combs has joined another former Wolves player,  Garrison Goodman, with the Fighting Sioux. Breon Butler (Pittsburg) is also a freshman running back at North Dakota.
