East Bay Volleyball Notes: BCL-East, Rankings

So what does one do about assessing the Bay Counties League East teams?

Athenian is 7-1, with a loss to Drew. Don’t know much about the Dragons from San Francisco.
Valley Christian is 6-3 with a win over Dublin, Head-Royce is 7-4 but has a rough three-game loss to Berean Christian, and College Prep hasn’t reported too many scores.
However, it appears that there are some talented team in the BCL-E.
Are they good enough to rank? That is a question that will be answered in time.
The Owls are clearly the best team in the league right now, starting out 4-0 in circuit play, and they beat Valley Christian in four, and Valley Christian beat Dublin. Dublin took a game off of No. 7 California. Other than that, there isn’t much to go off of, but if Athenian keeps winning, the top 15 in the Bay Area News Group’s top 15 could be in order.

The shifting at the bottom of the rankings was tough to do. Deer Valley dropped six spots after losing to Washington. I think it was a harsh drop, but Washington deserved a jump and by doing so and keeping Deer Valley at No. 12 or above, then Heritage and Berean Christian would have moved down without losing.
I think the Wolverines will be back. They have a win over Miramonte this year, in a tournament, and they play Heritage in league soon. Deer Valley will have a chance to move back up the rankings.
California, which I’m still not sure of its overall record (I have the Grizz at 5-0) makes the jump from out of the rankings to No. 7. Beating Granada in four games and starting 2-0 in East Bay Athletic League play was enough. We’ll see about the Grizzlies soon enough. Cal plays Amador Valley on Tuesday and Foothill on Thursday.
Let’s not gloss over Campolindo, which cruised past Foothill in three games. Campo beat Amador Valley the previous week and has only lost to Bishop O’Dowd as far as North Coast Section teams are concerned.
Speaking of the Dragons, they were at the Durango Classic in Las Vegas and went 2-5, playing against some of the best teams in the Western Region.

1. Bishop O’Dowd
2. Campolindo
3. Foothill
4. Amador Valley
5. San Ramon Valley
6. Carondelet
7. California
8. Granada
9. Miramonte
10. Albany
11. Washington
12. Heritage
13. Berean Christian
14. Deer Valley
15. Moreau Catholic

That looks about as accurate as it could be for now Matt. BOD and Campo are clearly ahead of the pack, and the EBAL teams that follow 3-8 will soon be beating each other up and allow other teams to move up as that league is solid once again this year. I wouldn’t put much stock in the one game Dublin got against Cal (It’s been brought up now 2 weeks in a row), as it was 26-24 and I understand Cal sat about 4 starters for that game.

Need to update. Irvington in the MVAL has now beaten Washington twice, once in league play and once in Newark tournament. Irvington also beat California in Newark tournament for the championship. American beat Mission too.
