East Bay Girls Volleyball Notes: Campo, Rankings, League Standings

Watch out for the Campolindo Cougars. This team is absolutely rolling.

Campolindo, since losing a couple of times early in the year and starting the season 2-2, has rattled off 13 straight wins, including the weekend’s festivities in Sacramento as they went 5-0 and won the Christian Brothers Tournament.
The most impressive part of winning that tournament was avenging their only two losses of the year.
The Cougars beat St. Mary’s-Stockton in pool play, and avenging that loss allowed them to win their pool and face Bishop O’Dowd in the playoff semi-finals.
Campolindo won that match in two and went on to beat St.Francis-Sacramento in two games in the finals.
The Cougars supplant the Dragons as the top ranked team in the Bay Area News Group’s East Bay online rankings and have beat five teams ranked in the top ten.
Campolindo is loaded with talent and senior leadership which includes Abbie Noland, Chandler Moore, Anisa Smith and Mary Vaccaro supplying the punch from the middle and the outside, while Kim Condie, Stacy Drury and Sophie Smith stabilize the passing and setting game.

We already touched on Campolindo, but it was hard to decide what to do at the bottom of the poll. The Mission Valley Athletic League teams are going to be ranked week to week. They just keep beating up on each other. With Irvington sweeping Washington, I had to move the Vikings back in and I didn’t think I could move Washington out and keep Deer Valley in after the Huskies recently beat the Wolverines. Deer Valley will be back, I’m sure.
Cal High makes another climb after beating Amador Valley, coming in at No. 4 just behind a Foothill team that beat the Grizzlies this week. Irvington beat Cal in the finals of the Newark Tourney, but I will reward Irvington more than punishing Cal. A little more stock goes into five-game matches than tournament matches, however, that takes nothing away from the Vikings win. They are really playing well and deserve a bump.
Castro Valley is a team on my radar, but for now the Trojans stay out of the rankings. They lost in three to Moreau Catholic, and though Moreau is ranked, the Mariners have an early season loss to Washington.
