St. Joseph Notre Dame High senior big man Brendan Keane is headed to the Big Sky Conference after giving an oral commitment Sunday to play basketball at Northern Colorado.
The 6-foot-10 Keane, who as a sophomore helped the Pilots reach the California Interscholastic Federation Division V state championship game, chose Northern Colorado over Pacific and Loyola-Chicago among others. The commitment is non-binding until he signs a letter of intent, which he can do Nov. 10.
“It really fits all my needs,” Keane said. “Their style of play, the coaches are great, the program is really going in a good direction.”
Keane made an official visit to the Greeley, Co., campus Thursday through Saturday. He thought it over when he returned home and made the call on Sunday. He’ll head to Northern Colorado as a center, but hopes to move into the power forward position by his sophomore year.
“The four and five is pretty interchangable in their offense,” Keane said. “They run a lot of ball screens with the bigs on the opposite sides of the post. If you’re a big and you can shoot, you can get inside out a lot.”
Keane was happy to get the decision past him and prepare for a promising senior season.
“It feels great,” he said. “It’s been a long process and is definitely all worth it. Now I can focus on my senior year.”
The Pilots finished third in a competitive Bay Shore Athletic League last season and lost in the North Coast Section Division V championship game to eventual state runner-up Branson-Ross. They also return senior guards Jacari Whitfield and Dominic Lippi, who have teamed with Keane to form the team’s core the past two seasons.
“Everybody knows that we want to win state and also league,” Keane said. “We have high hopes for this season.”
