East Bay Girls Volleyball Notes: Division I, Miramonte, 20-wins, Rankings, Standings

Just wanted to hit on a few quick points this week…

First of all, it is official that it is a 16-team bracket this year, which makes Division I very intriguing. Is it possible that a team that is currently 11-17 and a team that is currently 8-18 could get in? The answer is yes. Deer Valley, the former team, and Liberty, the latter, have played incredibly tough non-league schedules, and appear to be on their way to finishing better than .500 in league. Look for them to both get in.
Unfortunately for Livermore, it is in the East Bay Athletic League. There is no doubt that the Cowboys are one of the top 16 in Division I, probably one of the top 10, but they play in the toughest league and probably won’t finish over .500 in any of the necessary categories.
Newark Memorial is also in a similar situation. They Cougars appear to be a good team, but the Mission Valley Athletic League is tough. Right now they are 9-10 overall, and need to win a few more league games to finish over .500.

Don’t sleep on the Mats

Very quietly the Miramonte Matadors are putting together a nice season. After graduating many key seniors from a team that was dominant for a couple of years, this young team is 18-10 and should be one of the teams to keep an eye on in the NCS’ Division III playoffs.
The Mats get a shot at a big win when they play Campolindo on the road on Tuesday, looking to stay alive for the league title.

20-win teams

Several teams are starting to eclipse that 20-win mark. Berkeley High has already done it, and leads the East Bay with 23 wins. With three wins last week, Albany got to the 22-win mark while Foothill won twice and now has 21 wins. Heritage, Granada and Campolindo are now at 20 wins.
St. Mary’s, Berean Christian and Irvington should join that club soon as they have 19 wins entering this week.
How many teams will get to 30 before the playoffs start?

Rankings

Not much change in the rankings. Amador Valley gets a bump with a win over California. Granada drops behind the Grizzlies after losing to them in three. Other than that, it all stays the same.

    Matt

Having coached HS and followed local VB off and on since 1975, I have been VERY frustrated with Times coverage. NO league standings, minimal coverage it is been hard to get a the big picture. Today I google DFAL standings and found your site. Thank GOD! I appreciate this resource. Be well, Gary

PS VB is the 3rd most widely played HS female sport in the US and newspapers don’t get that readers want coverage.

    Hey Gary,
I really do appreciate it. I’m trying to cover the sport as best I can. It really is a great sport and deserves coverage!
    Thanks for finding me.
