East Bay Girls Volleyball Notes: League champs, Rankings, Standings

Next weekend we’ll be talking about the playoff brackets, but for this week we focus on just the leagues.
Most of them are all wrapped up, with a few exceptions.

ACCAL

As long as Alameda and Berkeley take care of business this week, which both should, they will have a one-game playoff on Friday to determine the league champ. They have beat each other once in league play this year, the only loss for either team.

BSAL

Albany rolled to an 18-0 league record, winning the regular season. The league tournament starts Tuesday with No. 3 Salesian hosting No. 6 Piedmont and No. 4 St. Mary’s hosting No. 5 St. Joseph Notre Dame. Albany and St. Patrick-St. Vincent have byes.

BVAL

This league is in the hands of Heritage. The Pats beat Deer Valley for the first time in school history, and just need to win their final two matches to wrestle away control of the league from the Wolverines.

DFAL

Campolindo wrapped up the league title with a win over Miramonte last week, dethroning the Matadors from their two-year reign at the top.

DVAL

Berean Christian just needs one win to wrap up the league crown and play two teams (Ygnacio Valley and College Park) which it has already beat this year.

EBAL

Foothill wrapped up the league title here, with California, Amador Valley, San Ramon Valley and Granada still in the running for second place.

HAAL

Bishop O’Dowd is your league champion once again, and is the overwhelming favorite in the league tournament which starts Tuesday.

MVAL

If Irvington and Washington take care of business they will finish in a tie atop the league, with two losses apiece, beating each other once. If both teams slip up, Mission San Jose is just one game back and could force a three-way tie. The league tournament will take place Friday and Saturday to sort it all out.

Rankings

Campolindo wins the rubber match between itself and Bishop O’Dowd, topping the Dragons at the Elite Eight Tournament. The Cougars 23-match winning streak came to an end in the finals of that tournament, losing in a close third game to El Camino, after beating that same team in two earlier in the day.
Ranking the EBAL teams is nearly impossible at this point as they keep beating each other. On one hand, Carondelet loses three matches in a row, but goes 6-1 at the Northgate Tournament, reaching the finals and beating SRV along the way. The Cougars also beat the Wolves in league play the week before.
Not everyone from the EBAL will be happy with the rankings this week. I’ll just do my best. I put a little more stock into regular season than tournament play, but it certainly matters. With all that said, Carondelet still moves up a spot.
Albany, who hasn’t lost in forever, climbs a couple of spots, while Washington’s win over Irvington puts them one spot ahead of the Vikings…for now. The MVAL tournament is coming up.

Matt Smith

    Hi Matt,
Just to clarify, there is no league tournament for the MVAL this year. In the event of a tie for first place, there will be a match to determine that, but otherwise there nothing. Thanks for all you do with the notebook and rankings!

  • MVALFremont

I heard all tournaments for the MVAL including basketball, soccer, softball and baseball are not taking place anymore

  • Matt Smith

Ya, you are right, it seems. League tournaments are no longer in the MVAL.

  • KG

Are you sure St. Patrick-St. Vincent has a bye and not Salesian? I think Salesian doesn’t play until Thursday.

  • Matt Smith

I was told St. Pat’s had the bye, but that could have been wrong. We’ll see tonight.

  • JD

Is there anywhere we can go to find frosh and JV standings?

  • Prep Fan

Great question JD. The only league I know of that keeps track of the frosh and JV standings is the WCAL:

    http://www.wcalsports.org/Statistics/FALL%20SPORTS/Fall%202010/Volleyball/Volleyball%20Standings%20Womens%20JVs%20Week%2002.pdf

The DFAL and DVAL websites have schedules and all League info, but no game scores or any standings. http://www.dfal.org/ http://diabloval.com/

The Bay Area Conference website has league standings for its 4 BCL leagues, but no JV or frosh results. http://www.bacbcl.org/

I am not aware of any other league websites that even have that much information.
