Garrick commits to Oregon

Castro Valley High football player Carlyle Garrick Jr. gave an oral commitment to Oregon this morning, he told Bay Area News Group-East Bay.
“I had two ACL surgeries (this year). They were always there … I just felt comfortable with them,” said Garrick about Oregon. Garrick, a 6-foot-2, 205-pound senior, has not played this season for the Trojans and said that he is out for the whole season.
Garrick was a first-team all-Hayward Area Athletic League selection as wide receiver last season and also played safety, but he said Oregon plans to use him at outside linebacker. Garrick said that he made his oral commitment to Oregon head coach Chip Kelly in person this morning on his official visit.
“When I was there, what I really liked was their academic center. That was really nice,” Garrick said. “The overall football facilities were great.”

Berkeley High’s Culberson commits to San Diego State

I spoke with Berkeley High’s basketball player Chairese Culberson this evening and she confirmed that she has orally committed to San Diego State. Culberson is the third Yellowjacket senior to commit to a Division I school. Guard Brittany Boyd is headed to Cal and Khristina Hunter, a transfer from Rodriguez-Fairfield, also committed to SDSU. Here’s what I wrote for tomorrow’s paper:

Prep Corner Live time/date change

OK everyone, Jimmy and I are human, so we’re wrapped up in the Giants playoff run along with everyone else in the Bay Area. As a result, we’re moving our regularly scheduled Prep Corner Live football chat this week.

And, we’re trying something new. This time, we’re going to host it Friday at noon. We’re going to try to build a little gameday buzz by doing it. I hope you’ll join us then.

Also, our photo/video staff is wrapped up with shooting the Giants as well, so The Pigskin Geek is taking the week off. We’ll be back with a brand new episode next week. If you’re going through withdrawls, visit contracostatimes.com/two-geeks.
