Verdon sets Division III state record

While looking at the CIF State Cross Country Championship program a few minutes ago, I noticed something quite significant.
With her winning time of 17 minutes, 15 seconds today, Campolindo High junior Carrie Verdon ran the fastest Division III girls time in state championship history. The previous record was held by another Central Contra Costa County high school runner, Carondelet’s Kristen Gordon. She ran 17:17 in 1996 for the 3.1 mile Woodward Park-Fresno course.
Speaking of milestones, there were multiple East Bay school records set on Saturday. Among them were a school course girls record by Castro Valley’s Kelsey Santisteban (17:30), the best state placing by a St. Joseph Notre Dame cross country runner ever (Nick Ratto, fifth, Division V boys race), and the best state placing by a St. Mary’s High freshman cross country runner (Spencer Moore, seventh, Division IV girls race)
Also, here’s wishing a speedy recovery for San Ramon Valley’s Brent Moore. Moore, who was fifth in last week’s North Coast Section Division II boys championship race, suffered a dislocated shoulder during a fall in the CIF Division II boys race today, according to San Ramon Valley coach Tim Hunter. Moore did not finish the race.

That’s what I had been told by coach Curtis McCauley, but a couple calls filtered in to refute the claim. A caller claimed the 1961 team went undefeated. So I did some digging. I believe our caller was actually referring to the 1960 team, which did win the Oakland Athletic League title.
