The main question for Division I is will there be a full field of eligible teams? We’ll find out this weekend.
AUTOMATICS (1): Pittsburg
Pitt is the only league champ at the moment. Either DLS or Cal will end up here, as could James Logan.
LOCKS (2): California, De La Salle
The top two teams in the East Bay meet this weekend with the EBAL title on the line. They’re probably the No. 1 and 2 seeds, regardless of what happens in that game.
PROBABLES (9): Berkeley, Deer Valley, Foothill, Granada, Heritage, James Logan, Monte Vista, San Ramon Valley
Only Foothill, Granada and SRV have less than six wins in this group, and all three of those teams would have more wins if they played in a different league. San Leandro is likely in, based on the lack of already-qualified teams and a win over Castro Valley. Seeding the probables could be tricky, but they’ll all be in there.
BUBBLES (6): Amador Valley, Castro Valley, College Park, Freedom, Irvington, Newark Memorial
A couple of these teams have yet to qualify, so they land on the bubble.
Amador Valley needs a win over Foothill this week to qualify. Win though, and they’re likely in based on strength of schedule. Also, the Dons have a win over Freedom.
Castro Valley is already qualified thanks to its league record, but an 0-4 record against Division I teams is something the Trojans would have to overcome in a full field. In a head to head situation, CV has losses to San Leandro and Newark Memorial.
College Park can qualify with a win this week against Clayton Valley, but the Falcons would be qualifying thanks to a 3-2 record in a largely Division II league. They’d have the same issue as Castro Valley, that being an 0-3 record against Division I teams. And, they have a loss to Freedom.
Freedom needs to beat Liberty to become eligible, but if it does, it will be a strong candidate. Wins over Berkeley and College Park highlight an entirely Division I schedule. I could see Freedom getting a decent enough seed if it could get eligible.
Irvington could qualify with a win over Newark Memorial, but it would be qualifying because of a 3-3 league record. Overall, the Vikings would be 3-7 and if the field has more than 16 teams, it would be tough for them to get a spot.
Newark Memorial needs a win over Irvington to qualify. The Cougars would have a valuable chip to play though, a win over Castro Valley. Win, and a low seed looks likely.
PROJECTED FIELD (not in seeded order): Berkeley, California, Castro Valley, College Park, De La Salle, Deer Valley, Foothill, Freedom, Granada, Heritage, James Logan, Monte Vista, Newark Memorial, Pittsburg, San Leandro, San Ramon Valley
