Outsider,

I'm speaking from my own experience, having played multiple sports in the OAL, won a Silver Bowl with McClymonds in 1987, and played Div 1 football. I'm not sure what team(s) you watched that had a number of Div 1 players where their performance did not translate to victories or championships. I'm not saying the number of athletes getting Div 1 scholarships will always translate to winning, but it does help and at times can be a determining factor (big plays) in a game. Of course the matter of coaching is at the helm of most championships. In my opinion, depth has very little to do with high school football as usually the best player will remain on the field. Well conditioned athletes can stay on the field for a great deal of the game. Myself and most of my teammates (high school & college) rarely came out of a game because of fatigue or because the opposition put in a new player. I'm sure most coaches would agree with my assessment

Ivory,
Mack can compete in Division 1 basketball because they have the talent and BB does not depend on a deep bench. Mack could compete in Division 1 football based solely on talent for awhile but would not have a deep enough bench to sustain a season. From what I have seen the number of Division 1 football scholarships a team has is not necessarily a reflection of how well your team does.

Outsider,

I don't think Mack is being excluded due to the physical nature of football. I've followed Mack football during the past 20 years. To my knowledge, Mack is one of the state leaders in terms of athletes getting Div 1 football scholarships. I think Mack would be able to compete with any school based on talent and regardless of their roster size. Oddly enough, the basketball team plays Div 1, instead of Div 3. I guess enrollment sizes and division play mean little when comparing the 2 sports.

Remember that the changes the CIF made to its bowl selection process regarding divisions came in late June. By that point, I'm pretty sure Mack's schedule was already in place. Mack was a Division IV team last year and probably assumed it would be Division IV again this year. Had they been D-4, their schedule would've been considered <i>VERY</i> good, since they would have played a good Division I team (Pitt), a good Division III team (Salesian, which is D-3 for state) and a very well-regarded Division IV team (Ferndale) that would be a competitor for the state bid. The McKinleyville game was completing a two-year home and home and the Marshall game was needed to fill the schedule. Plus, Mack went 5-6 last year, so they weren't world beaters. Really, I'd say it's that change to Division II that hurt Mack, not it's scheduling.

OAL teams only qualify for the DII state game. Folsom or Grant will get that spot. Mack's best chance for state this year would have been if they were in NCS and petitioned up to DIII (they are naturally DIV). They would have got the 1 or 2 seed and banged it out with the best to see who was the best to get that state DIII spot.

Before Mack starts talking about state they need to win a NCS playoff brackett first. Talk about state if they win a real playoff system with good teams not a "League Championship" system. Mack would not win a championship in division 1-3 in my opinion.

If Mack really wants to be considered for a state bowl game in the future, they need to take a look at who their competition is for the bowl game and play them in the non-league part of the schedule. The Pitt win is nice, but a committee will not care if a D2 team for bowl purposes beat two D4 playoff teams that are considered small school for the state bowl games.

Ivory,
Maybe I don't know what I am talking about but football and basketball have entirely different needs in terms of roster size and how each game affects the players. BB has five players who play both defense and offense. Even if your school is small it is possible to have five really good athletes. FB needs many more athletes which is harder to fill for the smaller schools. BB does not beat on you as hard as FB does. Why do you think the NBA can play so many games and the NFL does not. The bigger schools have deeper rosters. I know that does not address the NCS vs OAL question but it possibly explains why MACK can compete in BB with much larger schools but it is much harder in FB.
