I figured the top 3 were no brainers, but wasn’t sure how the remaining 12 would pan out. I think you guys did a pretty fair job of sorting out all the teams based on their seasons & bodies of work. Foothill really fell from grace with that 1st round loss to CP, but to keep them any higher than 15 would be a slap in the face to all the teams above them who advanced and actually won playoff games, when the games matter most. That 15 looks about right to me.
Congrats to DLS for their state (and national in some polls) championship season, and Concord, Mack & Salesian who all won section titles but were not selected to advance by the bureaucratic committees who vote on such things. It is too bad we don’t have an actual state or NorCal playoff, but each of these teams went as far as they could and have reason to be proud, as do all the teams on the list. It has been a great season of football.

Jimmy & Ben,
Great job on the coverage this year! Your prep coverage in the Bay Area is superb! We appreciate your insight into the various programs around the Bay. You probably already answered this so pardon the redundant question, when will you publish your picks for All East Bay team?
thanks!

Ben and I just gathered today to select the team. It’s scheduled to appear in the paper this Sunday, Dec. 26.

Jimmy & Ben, I echo S1lverngreen’s comments that you guys have done a great job this year. Thanks!

Okay Jimmy great job with the football as usual. Now when will all things basketball be appearing in the paper?

Big Joe posted this under another subject.
“All East Bay selections should be
QB- Lloyd(Con) Houston(DLS) 2nd team
RB- Dunne(DLS)
OL- Wynn(DLS)
DL- Wynn(DLS)
LB- Renaud(DLS) Barton(DLS) 2nd team
DB- Williams(DLS)
WR- Sharpiro (DLS) 2nd team
and 2 more DLS ofensive linemen, you pick ‘em on 2nd team.
The O Line is the best in the state this year.”
Forget Lloyd, just give DLS all the spots while you are at it.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:53 pm
Outsider, while I agree that may looks excessive, I can’t find much of a fault with some of those picks. He was third in the section in passing yards behind Lloyd and Lockie. Yes I know he played more games than the other QB’s. But he had a great year and still has not lost as a starting QB. I don’t think Wynn will get first team on both sides, but it would be hard to complain about that pick if he does. Renaud same deal. I don’t think Barton will make the team because he missed several games with injuries, but with his performances in the playoffs he certainly deserves some consideration for it. Williams had a great year and should be at least a 2nd team DB to go along with his punt returning abilities. Shapiro was third in the section in receiving yards. And Dunne had 40 TD’s. Simeona should be on the O-Line as well and Miller should make D-Line. It may seem like a lot of spots for a team, but hey those kids earned it against tough competition. Do I think all of them make it, probably not and I’m sure they will have a lot of great players on each team. But I don’t see a fault with those kids being selected.
My predictions for the players of the year is that Lloyd wins East Bay POY, Dunne wins offensive POY and then defensive POY will be a tossup.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:55 pm
Excuse me Houston was not third in passing yards, but third in passing rankings according to Maxpreps, whatever that means.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:59 pm
Renegades, weren’t you a pro Reil advocate in regards to the all EBAL team?
December 21st, 2010 at 12:54 am
Iker, I was and still am. But, I was making the point to Outsider that it’s also not that unreasonable of a pick. Always going to be hard for a DLS QB to get the accolades since they use the run so much.
December 21st, 2010 at 5:11 am
POY Concords Ricky Lloyd QB
#1 in State #4 in the Nation in passing yards = 4,451
#1 in State #4 in the Nation in completions = 301
#2 in the State #6 in the Nation in passing TD’s =52
Lloyd set 4 all-time NorCal Records one going back to 1977 for completions in a game @ 41.
WR…Concords…Kelly Starnes
#1 in State #6 in Nation in yards = 1,749
#2 in State #4 in Nation in receptions = 112
#1 in State #5 in Nation in Td’s = 25
1,749 yards is NorCal Record
December 21st, 2010 at 7:13 am
Cal’s leftside O-line has to be in there as well Garwood and Pearson dominated all year and did more than hold their own against DLS in both games (watch the film from both games and don’t get caught up in the halo effect of this past weekend), although DLS needs to be congratulated for a great run thinking they have the best players at every position (especially in the EBAL) is just not accurate
December 21st, 2010 at 12:47 pm
Scott Walsh-OT and Josh Cabral-C I’m sure will deservedly get a long look and consideration.
December 21st, 2010 at 1:10 pm
Garwood, Pearson, Reil, Taft, Prenot, Rivas, Sarmenta & Alvarez from Cal should all get some consideration for one of the teams. There are a lot of good QBs, WRs & RBs that we have all heard of and there will be a lot of competition for each of those spots throughout the East Bay. But what goes on in the trenches or on defense is not as easily deciphered in the box score or articles, and these picks are much harder to predict. Of course Renaud and Winn of DLS get all the publicity and rightfully so, but Garwood, Pearson & Prenot (among many others) were a large part of the Cal team this year who beat everbody handily that they faced but state champ DLS.
December 21st, 2010 at 7:11 pm
hey, i saw plenty of top flight games with dls, bishop gorman, st marys of stockton, cal hi. dls had the better players united as a team. however, after that state whippin on servite, they had the best individual players too. the halfback erased all dls records, and the o-line was superb. cant fault the defense, they gave up hardly any points all season.
December 21st, 2010 at 7:16 pm
now my picks for all fairyferny town north mud section. jack cates, all mouth defensive player who gave up 76 points to salesian. porkchop, alias porkbelly for all whinner offensive player, and bill johnson, for all ignorant idiot special teams player because he is so special to all of us. these three picks could only make all league in that crap patty area of fernytown, and by the way, they never played football.cates plays with a hose, porkbelly plays with pork, and johnson plays with himself. you are officially removed from all blogs.
December 21st, 2010 at 7:18 pm
salesian should be ranked about eight. they could roll some of those teams in front of them. too much speed, heart, and SOUL.
December 21st, 2010 at 9:37 pm
I pick Wynn as Def. POY. Not only a starter on both sides, the heart and soul of the team. Div 1 pick, lots of sacks, recovered fumbles, caused fumbles and a motor that never quit. He stayed humble all year and never lost focus, put the team ahead of him. A very scary blocker lined up in the backfield.
December 21st, 2010 at 11:23 pm
nobody here is arguing that DLS had the greatest talent at every position. that was outsider making a comment to Big Joe’s list of players to be nominated. Garwood and Pearson were both very impressive and I’m sure they make it as should quite a few of Cal’s players. All due respect to Concord, there were clearly two teams in the East Bay who were head, shoulders, and chest above every other team. Therefore both should be very well repped on the East Bay team.
BTW, never took the time to write a congratulatory post to Cal for a great season. Losing twice to the State Champ is nothing to be ashamed about and despite what some people think, I believe the Grizzlies, who have an outstanding crop of young players to go with a talented young coach, will be at the top spots in the league for quite a few years. Rivalry week should now always provide excitement as long as DLS remains in the EBAL.
December 22nd, 2010 at 7:59 am
Sport Fan- Kelly Starnes did not set a NorCal record with his receiving yards. That was McGovern last year who had over 2,000.
December 22nd, 2010 at 8:48 am
Post #19
Renegades, thanks for the words of congratulations to Cal. They really were on the verge this year. I don’t know if they can reload as sucessfully as DLS does every year. DLS is far enough ahead of the other teams that they can put their younger players in sooner for a good part of the season, which gives them a head start the next season. As far as a rivalry goes, I have a feeling that DLS will go semi-independent at the next league alignment, which will keep the EBAL at eight teams with Castro Valley coming in. DLS will continue to play some games in EBAL but will not be part of the league officially. Wish that could have been the case this year since I feel Cal really deserved to be league champion. Cal’s JV and Frosh teams were also very succesful this year which bodes well. I should also mention that the San Ramon Bears, which is the youth football team that feeds into Cal, SRV, Monte Vista, Dougherty Valley, and DLS, had the most successful season they have ever had this year. We are in for many more years of strong EBAL football.
December 22nd, 2010 at 9:18 am
I’m picking Lewis And Finney from pv. Those guy’s were the heart and soul for there team. Pinole would have never beaten berkeley without those guy’s. Lewis had tremendous games all year. He was electritfying. Also lewis stats weren’t on max preps but that kid average was 12.3 Per Carry. With games against De Anza Where he carried only one time. I get it! De anza…..Also Richmond where he carried Four times. That kid can play in any Division and be special. I would hope he and Finney get there just do.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:39 pm
Sure about that thedude? Only two guys finished with more than 12 yards a carry during the regular season. Lewis wasn’t either one. Great player though.
December 22nd, 2010 at 2:41 pm
Let me start off by saying I’m a complete DLS homer and the only team year-in-year-out that worries me when it comes to DLS supremecy is Cal High. I think they have the system in place to be good for a while. I admire Foothill’s ability to adapt their system to the players they have, instead of the other way around, but feel that beyond DLS Cal’s the best EBAL football program.
All that being said, I was only able to watch the NCS Championships and the Cal O-line did not impress me that much. Granted after watching DLS dominate Servite, that actually helps Cal’s case, as Cal gave DLS a tougher game.
December 22nd, 2010 at 3:37 pm
@Justmaybe you are right it was 11.4.. Wow just imagine what it could have been with 10 -20 carries in two games when he was pulled in the first Quarter of the game. 1-(1-25) 2ND(4-101). Im sure if he got the carries the top rushers in the east bay had he would be close to or maybe the leader…..I don’t know maybe you can look it up. Yes i’m a pv fan.
December 22nd, 2010 at 4:42 pm
@Thedude. Possibly….but the Salesian back was pulled in the first quarter(4-110) and first half of several games. In addition, the Salesian quarter back was ranked 3rd. I’m sure if he got the carries the top rushers in the east bay had, he could maybe be the leader…I don’t know maybe I should look it up. LOL I’m a PV fan too, but I ride with the Pride!
December 22nd, 2010 at 5:21 pm
Okay then we are rooting for Prior And Lewis….You know they are buddies…
December 22nd, 2010 at 5:34 pm
When the All East Bay teams come out this weekend, will Bilecci of Cal get selected as Coach of the Year? He certainly did a great job this year with a team that was picked by the same Times staff that selects the All East Bay teams to come in 6th place in the EBAL. Certainly Lad would be a strong candidate as always. Hamilton of Concord should also be given serious consideration, as should Mack’s McCauley, Salesian’s Nightingale, PV’s Alameda and Encinal’s Tenorio. Are those the top 7 vote getters, or did I miss a deserving candidate?
December 22nd, 2010 at 6:30 pm
@Thedude ABSOLUTELY!!!! Long time buddies!
December 22nd, 2010 at 7:23 pm
@ justmaybe they didn’t give prior the rock like last year. What was that about? I know he wasn’t in the dog house. I know him, he’s a great kid that works his tail off. I coached hime… How about that..:-)
December 22nd, 2010 at 10:26 pm
Hamilton from Concord should be East Bay coach of the year. Lad should be the National coach of the year.
December 22nd, 2010 at 10:50 pm
Very true–far fewer touches. Better average and a NCS Championship. Can’t deny that Woosley had a good year. The run/pass combo made Salesian one of the best offensive teams this year. He’s a good kid??? Really?? LOL
December 23rd, 2010 at 8:56 am
My vote is Hamilton for coach of the year-he did a tremendous job with this crew.
As much as I love Dunne-id vote Loyd for POY
December 23rd, 2010 at 9:11 am
@just maybe true.
December 23rd, 2010 at 9:47 am
By the way, dude, are you still coaching? Now I’m tryna figure out who you are.
December 23rd, 2010 at 12:26 pm
No!I coached them in pop warner him and James. They started together.
December 23rd, 2010 at 2:50 pm
Who did you coach with the Richmond Steelers?
December 23rd, 2010 at 5:07 pm
Yeap
December 23rd, 2010 at 5:15 pm
Renegades re: Quarterback Rating
Maxpreps uses the same QB Rating employed by the NFL, a system of evaluating different quarterbacks and their efficiency, no matter how many times they throw the ball.
It uses a formula using Completion Percentage, Average Yds per attempt, % of TD passes, % of interceptions. The highest possible rating is 158.3. The current season record is held by Peyton Manning in 2004 at 121.1.
Using our local H.S. quarterbacks in 2010; Bart Houston had a season rating of 138, Ricky Lloyd 134, Drew Riehl 119, Jeff Lockie 108, Zack Kline 81, Jeremy Mata 76, Kyle Moreno 55.
For the fun of it; under the NCAA QB Efficiency System, Cam Newton, Auburn holds the record with a a rating of 188.16 (with one big game to go). Under that system, Houston rates 211.47 this year and Lloyd comes in at 190.48.
If you want you can play around with the formula by going to http://www.primecomputing.com
December 23rd, 2010 at 5:38 pm
The QB Ratings for the other State Bowl Game teams are the following:
Connor Preston – Serra Gardena 137
Dano Graves – Folsom 135
Michael Eubanks – Centennial 131
Christopher Bono – Palo Alto 125
Cody Pittman – Servite 106
December 23rd, 2010 at 5:52 pm
dano graves for national high school football player of the year..enough said.
December 23rd, 2010 at 8:52 pm
I agree Lloyd should be player of the year, if Dunne was going both ways like Ward last year then I think he would win it, but Dunne should be offensive POY.
December 23rd, 2010 at 8:55 pm
outsider- I thought the Bears mainly fed into Cal and Dougherty while the T-Birds fed into SRV and MV?
December 23rd, 2010 at 8:55 pm
dano graves??? noo.. Ricky lloyld EASILY! the player of the year. and most def my favorite player to wacth so exciting,, as well as marcus peters from mack.. but he dont got the stats.. but football wise he is the best player
December 23rd, 2010 at 11:40 pm
I played against Salesian this year, and Aaron Prier is good, but he’s not even the best on the team. No disrespect to him, but Marcial Malic is a beast. He should get some recognition, as well.
December 24th, 2010 at 6:18 am
no Dano definitely deserves state POY over Lloyd. Both great QB’s, but Graves won a state title.
December 24th, 2010 at 8:36 am
Just want to wish all my fellow prep bloggers a Merry Christmas / enjoyable holiday! and go ‘Hounds!
December 24th, 2010 at 8:44 am
Renegades,
There is some cross-over between the geographic area that feeds into the Bears and the T-Birds. There is no actual requirement for where you live so it comes down to a matter of who you want to play for.
December 24th, 2010 at 9:37 am
@renegade,that’s what im saying i think dano graves deserves to be state player of the year, dont get me wrong ricky lloyd is also a hell of a qb good luck to him at southern miss truly one of the best qb’s to come out of the bay area no doubt.i mean if you watched the state championship game between serra and folsom even the commentators said that dano graves deserves to be state player of the year and im pretty sure they know what there talking about.
December 24th, 2010 at 9:39 am

December 24th, 2010 at 11:37 pm
Merry x-mas to all.
December 25th, 2010 at 11:37 am
3 ex- Richmond Steelers made all-ACCAL and 1 was MVP James Lewis MVP(Pinole)RB, Rudolph James (Berk)RB, and Carvonte Hill (Pinole)RB. Thank you Coach Fred Harris your memory lives on through these young men and many others that you have coached and mentored. Thedude, what happened to M. Sherman he should have had a breakout year @ Hercules, did not hear anything about him. Very good football player.
December 25th, 2010 at 2:58 pm
He got into a little trouble this year. He’ll be back next year.. This is funny because i have a feeling we know each other.
