Got some local recruiting news to share today, as Alhambra High running back/linebacker Jared Leaf has decided to take his talents to San Jose State next season. Here’s what will run in tomorrow’s paper.

Alhambra running back/linebacker Jared Leaf has orally committed to San Jose State, the Bulldogs leading rusher said Thursday.

“A big part was it’s close to home,” Leaf said. “The players there are real cool. They’re real supportive of players coming into the program.”

Leaf was a mainstay on both sides of the ball this season, starting at middle linebacker and rushing for 1,381 yards and 18 touchdowns in nine regular season games. The 6-foot-2, 225-pound athlete also had offers from Army, Navy and Sacramento State. He had also drawn interest from Cornell, which does not offer athletic scholarships.

Leaf said he doesn’t know what position he’ll play in college, saying that will be determined once he makes it to San Jose.

“None of us have any idea,” Leaf said. “It’ll be wherever I fit in best for them.”

    Congrats Jared — you’re a good kid.

Jared Leaf was one of the strongest runners to come out of Alhambra in some time…One of his biggest games was against El Molino where he scored five TD’s..He was a wild man in that game…against healdsburg..Leaf didn’t enter the game until the second half and if he had been at the begining…I’m sure the Bulldogs would have won…even with nagging injuries…Leaf gave it his all…there were many, many times he would be dragging would be tacklers for those extra yards…Good luck at San Jose State…

great job young man…you’ve become a spartan! not a bad thing!

  • Rob

SJSU has another ex-Alhambra running back – Brandon Rutley who is going into his senior year. Anyone like to make any comparisons between the two backs?

  • Oh boy

S! J! S! U! San Jose State! Congrats Jared-we look forward to big things out of you at the next level

Rob…..The only difference i saw between Leaf and Rutley was Rutley was several steps faster, but Leaf was the hard hitter and he was tough as a line backer..He was all over the place making stops or assists…filling his shoes will be a tough job….

Hey Jared- Congrats on going D1!

What a treat it’s been for us Alhambra fans, watching Jared Leaf carry the ball and bulldoze the opposition, would-be tacklers flying like bowling pins. Combined with your bone-crushing tackles on defense, and Adam Nesheim and RJ Cellini throwing bombs to the acrobatic Trevor Davis, the last several years have been a special time in Alhambra’s history.

The only thing in life that’s constant is change, but why did these Golden Years at Alhambra have to end so soon? Your combination of talent, heart and brains will take you far. Jared, you’re first class all the way. Thanks from all Alhambra fans for four great years, and a lifetime of memories.

  • really?

Geez, it sounds like you’re breaking up with your girlfriend. The kid plays football, and does it relatively well. That is all.

I’m beginning to think you have an unhealthy obsession with all things Bulldog. Better get that checked out.

  • Love My Spartans!

Congrats Jared. Coach Mac is a class act and is building something great at SJSU. Welcome to Sparta!

  • Mr. Han

To be honest, SJSU and CAL don’t really recruit out of the bay area like they should. Im not sure what you guys see and like about Coach Mac. Leaf, Dunne (reminds me of Walsh), Trammell, McMurray, Allen, DeA Carter, Milton, Pickett, Niko A., Anderson, Concrete, Sashington, Calhoun, the kid from John Swett last season, Adams, Marin Catholic’s RB from 2 seasons ago, all should be signing for SJSU. Thats we they suck. Be for real.

However, Leaf, young man, maybe you can turn it around. Congrats and good luck. Keep punishing people.
