Evan Powell is the new athletic director at Dougherty Valley High in San Ramon. Powell, 26, has replaced Brian Freitas, who decided to step down but will remain as the Wildcats varsity baseball coach and a physical education teacher. Powell also teaches P.E. at Dougherty Valley and is the girls golf coach. Freitas said he’d thought about stepping down for a while, wanting to spend more time with his two young sons, ages 4 and 7. He’s seen the program progress rapidly during his four years as athletic director, beginning six months before the school officially opened. Powell, who has a masters degree in education and a background in organizing adult and youth recreation sports, said he’s “excited” about the new opportunity and has a lot to learn. Powell, a 2002 California High graduate, played sports his freshman and sophomore years before an injury ended his playing career.
