Castro Valley has cracked the POWERADE FAB 50 ESPN RISE boys basketball poll that was released today, checking in at No. 50. Salesian, which is 34-1 on the court, including a 63-61 win over the Trojans on Jan. 17, was already in the poll and moved up eight spots to No. 40. The two local teams are among six California schools in the national poll, preceeded by No. 10 Lincoln-San Diego, No. 12 Mater Dei-Santa Ana, No. 17 Long Beach Poly and No. 27 Centennial-Corona.
Mater Dei and Centennial are playing Saturday in the CIF Division I Southern regional finals and the winner will play the winner of the Northern regional final between Castro Valley and De La Salle. Poly lost to Mater Dei in the semifinals of the very powerful SoCal Division I playoffs. Lincoln is the defending Division II state champion and plays Summit-Fontana in the SoCal Division II finals Saturday. Lincoln could end up facing Mitty in the Division II state finals.
Not surprisingly, the state rankings by Cal-Hi Sports, which are put together by the crew that helps out with the national rankings, follows the same pattern of No. 1 Lincoln, No. 2 Mater Dei, No. 3 Long Beach Poly, No. 4 Centennial, No. 5 Salesian and No. 6 Castro Valley. De La Salle checks in at No. 11 and Bishop O’Dowd is No. 14.
