Fundraiser notices for MDUSD schools

Got a couple of fundraisers coming up that will benefit athletic programs in the Mt. Diablo Unified School District.

The United Mt. Diablo Athletic Foundation is hosting a “Vegas Night” at the Concord Hilton on April 30. It will be a full house casino event run by professional gaming providers. There’ll be a Texas Hold’em tournament, and the winner will get a one-year lease for a 2011 Toyota Camry, sponsored by Toyota of Walnut Creek. The $50 per person cost takes care of dinner and chips. Entering the hold’em tournament is an additional $100. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit www.unitedmtdiabloathletics.org.

OK, the second event coming up is specific to Mt. Diablo High. The Red Devils are hosting their first annual Car, Bike and Truck Show on April 9 at MDHS. To register an automobile in the show is $25, and proceeds benefit Mt. Diablo High athletics. Registration goes from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m., judging from 10 to 2 p.m. and the trophy ceremony is at 3 p.m. Admission is free for spectators.

Salesian moves up, DLS moves in to ESPN Fab 50

Salesian is on the rise again in the Powerade FAB 50 ESPN Rise boys basketball rankings, moving up seven spots to No. 33.  The Pride are now the third-highest ranked team from California in the national poll. Mater Dei, which plays De La Salle in Saturday’s CIF Division I state title game, is No. 2. Long Beach Poly is No. 17. Centennial-Corona, which lost to Mater Dei in the SoCal finals, is No. 37.

Archbishop Mitty moved into the rankings this week at No. 47 and De La Salle is also a new member of the rankings at No. 48. Castro Valley, which was No. 50 in last week’s rankings, dropped out. Lincoln-San Diego, which was No. 10 in last week’s rankings, also dropped out after it was upset by Summit-Fontana in the SoCal Division II finals.

Softball previews coming next week

A few people have asked me when softball previews are coming out and the answer is early next week, either March 28 or 29. Look for breakdowns on each league as well as our first poll. I’ve been so preoccupied covering state playoff basketball that I haven’t been able to get out to a softball game yet. So I’m turning to you, softball fans, to get the discussion going. Will James Logan repeat as Division I champions? Can Concord get back to the Division II title game despite losing three quality pitchers? Will this be the year someone dethrones Freedom in the BVAL? Who are the other teams to watch out for?
