East Bay Boys Volleyball Notes: SRV Tourney, Rankings, Standings

I made my way to the San Ramon Valley Tournament this weekend, here are some thoughts on what I saw.

Deer Valley is gigantic, and Jason Agopian is just about the best player I have ever seen. He’s nearly unstoppable. If he gets a set in the right place, it will be a kill every time. The Wolverines can be inconsistent, but if they are on I can see them making a run to the NCS finals and somewhere along the line giving De La Salle a run, if the two teams happen to meet up.

California coach Courtney Whitaker is aware that she doesn’t know exactly what she’s going to get each time out when the Grizzlies hit the floor, but when they do play well, they are going to be a team that will frustrate you. They have an emerging setter in Craig Horlbeck, they are deep defensively and have some solid hitters.

San Ramon Valley looks young and a little inexperienced, but this team is one to watch out for next year. With the ability to beat good teams this year, something they’ve shown they can do, don’t sleep on the Wolves.

Acalanes looked a lot better than when I saw them against College Prep. The setting is coming around and Cole Markley is an absolute beast.

Just got a quick look at College Park, but I think Northgate’s Jim Changaris was right when he said to watch out for them. I also saw St. Patrick-St. Vincent briefly. That is going to be a tough team to handle in the Division III playoffs.

Rankings

Campolindo continues to climb, and Northgate also jumps up after another impressive week. The two certainly look like the teams to beat in Division II.
With Amador Valley beating Cal, then San Ramon Valley beating Amador, then Cal going further in the tourney then SRV and then throw in an Acalanes win over the Wolves and I had quite a mess to deal with. With all that considered, those teams stayed relatively close to where they were.
Someone made a comment about College Prep having two league losses, but I haven’t found anything to support that. They and Valley Christian continue to represent the BCL, while Acalanes climbs back into the rankings, and College Park makes its debut.

1. De La Salle (18-1)
2. Deer Valley (18-2)
3. Campolindo (15-4)
4. Mission San Jose (8-3)
5. Foothill (8-4)
6. Northgate (19-5)
7. Amador Valley (8-3)

12. Valley Christian (12-7)

    Matt
Northgate and DLS lost this weekend. NG lost to Drake in 2 at a tournament and DLS lost to Rocklin(not sure who). Record for DLS showed 15-0. Not sure what NG record is. Also do you know who will be at the Foothill tournament? Thanks and see you around volleyball games.

  • Matt Smith

Ya, Northgate’s record is accurate. Their coach is really good about reporting their scores. I figured that to consecutive 6-1 weeks and two straight tournament finals, and they could move up after teams around them didn’t have weeks as good.
I still haven’t seen the DLS results. This is the first that I’ve heard that they lost.

  • Volleyball101

Yeah DLS lost to Rocklin in 2 (18-25, 23-25).
