Updates from Day 1 of the CIF state track championships

Phil Jensen and I have arrived at Memorial Stadium on the campus of Buchanan High in Clovis. We’ll try to provide some updates here as we can. Feel free to add in your own updates in the comments. Hit refresh throughout the day for updates.

Heritage’s Alex Horncliff finished 17th in the boys discus and was the East Bay’s top finisher in the event.

De La Salle’s Michael Barton took third in a very fast 110 hurdle heat in 14.30 and ends up with the fourth best time of the day. Kennedy-Richmond’s Kenneth Walker III also qualified with the seventh-fastest time of 14.35.

None of the East Bay boys qualified for the finals in the long jump. The NCS’s top qualifier, El Cerrito’s Trevell Wallace, did not compete. Reached by phone, he said he found out at 5 a.m. that he would have to skip the trip due to an illness to his mom. He entered with the state’s fifth best mark of 23-11. The Bishop O’Dowd freshman Nate Moore is the East Bay’s top finisher in the long jump at 21-5 3/4. He took 19th.

Clayton Valley’s Michael Stupka qualified ninth in the boys 400, edging the 10th place finisher by .01 seconds. His mark of 48.31 was a PR and school record.

Las Lomas’ Kenny Grimble became the lone boy to win his heat with his 300 hurdles time of 37.63, a PR that’s the second fastest time run today.

In the boys triple jump, three East Bay athletes qualified. Dublin’s Keremiah Crockett has the second best mark at 48-1 1/2. Bishop O’Dowd’s Trent Trammel is eight at 46-3 3/4 and Hayward’s Jonte Grant is ninth at 46-3 1/4.

Ciarra Brewer and Sasha Wallace both advance to the finals in the triple jump. Brewer opened with a wind-legal 42-8 1/2, then improved to 43-2 1/2 wind-legal on her second and final attempt, as she was the No. 1 qualifier. Wallace was the No. 6 qualifier with a best of 39-4 1/2 wind-legal on her final attempt.

San Ramon Valley’s Sarah Griffith qualified for the finals in the girls 400. She had the seventh-fastest time of the preliminaries (55.91 seconds). She was third in her heat.

Just got back from Buchanan, great day of racing. Wind legal sprints on most of the events. Weather was perfect! Good to see some of our hurdlers from the North getting their groove on. Wilson, Grimble, Walker and Barton all going to the big dance tomorrow night. A bit of a disappointment for the northern relay teams with Deer Valley (Girls) 4×100 and 4x 400 team being the only school moving to the show on Saturday. Looking for big things tomorrow from Brewer and Frazier! Can’t say enough good things about this great venue! Great place to have the big dance! Go North!

  • S1lverngreen,
Hard to believe that place is a high school facility, huh? Really a great spot. I was leery when I first heard they were moving this to a high school, but not anymore. If you haven’t yet, go check out the baseball stadium. It’s incredible.

Agree, the place certainly looks more like a college campus. They mentioned that 3 of the local high schools share the field for football?? Wonder how they do that? Thur- Sat games? Stay dry tonight, it’s raining already!

It can be done, but can’t be easy. Tak Fudenna stadium at Washington HS in Fremont is shared by 5 schools, with several games played on Saturdays.
