Redemer named head football coach for Hayward
By Tony Gonsalez
Monday, June 6th, 2011 at 4:14 pm in East Bay Football.
Hayward High has named Justin Redemer has been hired as its new football coach, athletic director Kristy Prasad confirmed on Monday.
“It’s a great opportunity to take over a program with this type of history,” Redemer said. “From the 1980s where they had a dominant program to the Casey Moreno era where he took them to the North Coast Section finals.”
He takes over for Bill Bishop. Bishop went 19-13, including two playoff appearances, in three seasons at the helm for the Farmers.
Redemer comes over to Hayward after spending seven seasons in the Liberty program. He was the offensive coordinator for Liberty as well as being their offensive line coach, strength and conditioning coach and the freshman and JV coach during his tenure in the Lions program.
Redemer is very happy for his first head coaching opportunity at the varsity level.
“I was looking all around the bay area and even in Southern California to see what head coaching vacancies were available,” he said. “I seen Hayward was looking for a coach and decide to put my name in there.”
Despite having the job less than a week, Redemer is already on the go with the Farmers program. He has already been introduced to the players and have named several assistants. Tom Turner, who has been part of the Hayward coaching staff in the past, will be the offensive coordinator. Neil Moore, who was an assistant at Liberty as well, will take over the reigns as the defensive coordinator.
Hayward announces basketball coaches
Hayward has announced the hiring of its boys and girls basketball coaches. Sunny Aujla will take over the boys basketball. Quiana Wilson, who was an assistant at DeAnza for two seasons, is the new girls basketball coach.

Bad call by Encinal to schedule these guys. El Cerrito will be better then these guys this year.
I heard Bill Bishop took the job as Defensive Coordinator at Tennyson & quit in 3 days. If you can’t hack it at Hayward it will be worse at Tennyson. Same attitudes but worse athletes.
June 6th, 2011 at 5:01 pm
Who did Redemer beat out for the job? How did he perform at Liberty? Can any players or coachess from that team give us some background on what we’re getting? I’ve never heard of Redemer? Why did Bishop leave? Where is Moreno? Turner is the coordinator? He is just a trainer from my understanding and where has he been? What happened to Cisneros? Did he retire? A lot of questions surround this program that has underperformed. The administration has underperformed too. They should have never let Moreno leave. Bring him back and we win the NCS championship.

WOW Perkin that is a pretty rough hit on the Jets coaching staff.
over the last 3 seasons EC and Hayward are pretty equal in won-loss columns.
The Jets are kind of stuck. The need to play Alameda for the Island bowl every year, they do not want to drop Serra so that only leaves 1 non-league slot to fill and from what I heard they could not get any top notch teams to play them. ( They tried to schedule Cardinal Newman
June 6th, 2011 at 8:17 pm
I’m down with the Jets it seemed like a good call a couple of months ago. But new coaching staff this late is gonna be rough. Thompson couldn’t cut it he quit before the season a few years ago. Bishop was there for years as an assistant but couldn’t cut it as the main man(I heard he quit for a few days last year). Now a guy who coaches in Brentwood is gonna break those horses?? I don’t think so. Look for them to under achieve. Moreno definitely the right man for the job at Hayward. His offense, his in your face attitude is what it will take for Hayward to succeed.

whats gonna happen with the new leagues? I hear with the new accal n haal there will be 2 divisons so theyll have 2 league champs is that true? Will the 2 leagues divisons be made by enrollment? Accal looks like it will be horrible pinole valley will win it everyear maybe el cerrito if it can get it together way to much talent but havent gotten it done with kahn. Im sure salesian n st.pats want no part of pinole valley. Haal adding berkeley alameda make sense but bringing piedmont & encinal 2 small schools with small rosters to play against mostly d1d2 not so much.

@ Farmer Fred.. and Perkin..
I am glad to help you guys by giving you some insight from a BVAL fan.. To be honest with you guys im going to keep things real. I follow the BVAL alot every single year very throughly.. and I have to say Remeder is a terrible play caller. He calls very basic plays that a noticeable to any team to pick up on. As you all know Liberty is a bad program in the BVAL lacks athleticism, but has decent coaching. The Hayward Farmers have taken a few notches down with this hiring, comes from a very bad program. Remeder is traditional pro style coach, so he will for sure change the Traditional Wing T offense that the farmers run (If i recall correctly). He is not a consistent coach at all, he is so inconsistent that he didnt have much trouble scoring against the tougher teams, but he had a hell of a time scoring against teams that were decent or terrible in their own division.
June 7th, 2011 at 9:10 am
Congratulations to the new Hayward coach. Anytime the Farmers can get a good young coach it is good news. Often a young and eager coach must travel from outside his area to become the Lead Sled Dog, sacrifice his time, his gas money, his social life, all of his comforts in order to get his chance to prove himself.
Redemer obviously pursued the Hayward job and was recognized by the Farmer Administrators to be the man now.
Do not know what or why happened to Moreno at Hayward or if Moreno even interviewed but Moreno has nothing to prove to anybody at Hayward.
Let us give Redemer two seasons before he is judged.
The New super leagues are a mess, a gargantuan blunder of titanic proportions enacted by the ncs.
I can see the smallish football schools dropping football or protesting and petitioning to leave their new leagues to form separate “Football Only” leages or divisions before the 2012 season is ever played.
Terrible job by ncs and cif on the new leagues in terms of football power balance

Once again Killer D smartest voice in the room!
June 7th, 2011 at 11:30 am
Bval expert what kind of pro style you talking about i formation or singleback? Is he a run first guy or does he like to sling it?
June 7th, 2011 at 2:42 pm
NFL
Alot of spilt backs, strong right, strong left, he does i formation but not that much.. He rarely does single back but its on his play book. He has done shotgun but mostly under center stuff. But who knows he might change it up or maybe keep their offense. We wont know until the first game.

If so, then we can Lay Out what is the best possible Split of two 6 team divisions within each conference.
Whoa be the small schools, I pity them

ManDown and BVAL Expert:
How do you “win” a passing league game. You two both exposed your ignorance by thinking it matters who wins and loses a passing tournament, or, that your opinion even matters. Its practice in underwear. You are also probably guys that would release a fullback up the middle on a seam route in 7 on 7, that is, if you actually coached.
BVAL Expert, huh? Expert at what, judging coaches? You’re the same guy that came on here last year to bash Liberty, you obviously have an agenda.
June 8th, 2011 at 11:00 am
I’m not sure if any of you have read the story on David Henderson, former SF City Prep standout. He was fatally shot in the Bayview on 05/26 and was pulled off life support monday by his mother. Henderson had @ 5600 yds his jr/sr seasons , set multiple records, and played at City College for 2 yrs. Unfortunate this had to happen ; but, it should make young players appreciate what they have in front of them, and do their best not to get trapped in bullsh$%^. Our prayers go out to his family. Outstanding player…..
June 8th, 2011 at 11:52 am
Winners of each pool advance to a tournament. Maybe top 2. I’m not for any team not running their Base O or whatever they would run during the season. If Reps are what you’re after you have to win your pool to ultimatley play more games. When you get into the tournament its about winning sorry. You gonna give equal reps or say it doesn’t matter then lose in the 1st round & not posibly get 2 or more games. Do the better teams go to tournaments & say this is practice in underwear it doesn’t matter?? DOes DLS. I saw them at the DVC PAssing Tourney a couple of years ago & they ran 85-90% their Base O but had a few gimmicks maybe for the year but probably to suceed under Passing League rules.
Look at bad teams struggling to establish themselves they gonna give equals reps & get blown out? Or do what they gotta do to establish some kind of winning attitude. Passing League or 7 on 7 don’t mean anything, good teams will use them right, some bad teams will believe in what they see in 7 on 7 & thats just the way it is & always will be.

EarHustler, How do you win a passing league game? Simple, just score more points than your opponent jerk! Come on man we all know these funky passing league games mean nothing and are just for fun, just like my prediction. Its all just for fun and extra practice for those teams that are compeating? I didnt say that the team that wins the tournament will go on to be the NCS champion. Relax dude and take a chill pill.
June 8th, 2011 at 1:24 pm
WOW .. R.I.P dave henderson, such a great kid… This is shocking
June 8th, 2011 at 1:26 pm
eagle12 thanks for that info, that real sad to hear, that kid was really a player, was talking with some other coaches just recently wondering where he was playing if he was at a school. very very sad thing.
June 8th, 2011 at 2:05 pm
EarHustler- First of all your wrong about passing league statements your making a fool out of yourself, if you knew alot about the game of football. You would know Things like passing league, give you an idea of how good a team really is. It gives you the inside of what a teams doing. Hey man, you sound ignorant making those statements. It might not mean anything, but it sure as hell would tell you how good their passing game is. EarHustler sounds really ignorant.
Well your so called “bashing” that i do is called “not sugar coating”. and if you dont like it then i dont know what to tell you. Maybe you should help Liberty out if you really care man. Finishing last or second to last every season, yea uhmmm be prepared to take alot of criticism it just works out like that. and by the way I dont “bash” them all the time.
June 9th, 2011 at 9:48 am
does anyone know if it is JFK of fremont or richmond in the laney passing league? if it is fremont it will be fun to see if JFK is ready to take over as fremonts best team, with all the new players they got now
June 9th, 2011 at 10:29 am
while it sounds as if JFK fremont will be much improved w new coach and all this new supposed talent..Not sure where they are being bused in from? but im sure NCS will have their eye on them if so many new players going to Kennedy, especially considering no kid has probably ever transfered their that wasn’t forced to over the past 10 years.
while there is definately some merit and learning from passing league, let’s wait until they win more games in September-November before we all hail Kennedy.
what other passing league tourney’s coming up? would be interesting to get some breakdown of some of them. obviously nothing now wins you anything in september but speed, qb play, defense, etc. can still be seen. no doubt the game is won in the trenches, but still a good learning tool, otherwise why do it. any competition is good.
based on laney’s tourney a few notes…
how does freedom and Amador’s returning QB’s look plus the talen around them, can either look to make more noise in their respective leagues.
who is the unfortunate replacement to lloyd and how does the reigning ncs champs look after taking a big talent hit?
how does logan, encinal, pinole and all the oakland schools look? passing tourney’s aren’t necessarily any of their strengths since they don’t pass real well, so curious to see if defense can dominate and athletes can make plays.
who replaces carter and their qb at washington?
moreau a team that seems to be on the upswing again, how will they fair in their last season before joining MVAL again
will encinal and alameda matchup? not sure if the first fight would come from the players or the fans, considering all the s&%* that seems to be posted on the blogs in regard to both teams.
don’t know much about the other teams, so if anyone can fill us in.
June 9th, 2011 at 10:53 am
moreau on the up swing? You cant be serious they beat no one last year they play trash in non league when they played the better teams in league they got whopped. Moreau needs to step up there non league how about playing a dfal or mcal team.
June 9th, 2011 at 11:34 am
NFL-
Pay attention, Moreau is on the up swing! Three years ago they were 0-10, then 4-6, last year 6-3-1. Over that same three year period the rebuilt JV program has lost 5 games. I would say that is an up swing. Moreau’s losses last year were not just to the better teams in the league they were to NCS playoff teams – Encinal was NCS runner up. By the way, they have two DFAL teams on their non-league schedule for Fall 2011. Cotter and his coaches have done an outstanding job turning around Mariner football.
June 9th, 2011 at 11:40 am
No one will keep an eye on Kennedy. They can pull kids from every Fremont school and nothing will ever happen to them. Everyone will just be glad kids are actually going to school there. Newark might be the only school that can get gill lemon to do anything since he has his little bro-mance with Ashmore. Even then, its just karma if Kennedy pulls kids from Newark after more then 10 years of them taking our best basketball players. A perfect example of why gill lemon will favor Kennedy is, when Ross the WR from Laney tried to transfer to Washington from Kennedy it wasn’t more than 3 week tell gill lemon had him off the team and Washington had to forfeit all its games. Kennedy has kids from Washington with their coaches from Washington coming over this year and watch, nothing will happen.
June 9th, 2011 at 12:03 pm
Pawn 10 wins last 2 seasons ok who did they beat? Did they beat a playoff team or solid football program? When you do that thats when your up in coming not beating the bottom feeders like slz albany jfk. St.pats beat you to so dont act like encinal was your only loss. What dfal teams are they playing? What is there non league schedule?
June 9th, 2011 at 12:03 pm
Which coaches came over to Kennedy from Washington?
June 9th, 2011 at 12:06 pm
good insight pawn star…listen i didn’t say moreau was challenging DLS next year, I just said they were on the upswing…and i think their record over the past few years proves that. will they continue not sure, which is why i asked the question to look for in passing to see what they got. looks like they have two DFAL teams on the schedule is that what you wanted?
not sure why everyone feels the need to tear apart specific teams, players, and coaches on here all the time…
mvalfan – there might be some truth to nobody caring, not sure. but newark bball brings NCS $ Kennedy doesn’t, not sure they may not get the same love from commish…not that either are right, but the reality…
you seem to have the insight, who/how many has transfered to kennedy? which washington coaches are at kennedy? isn’t that illegal for players to follow coaches?
June 9th, 2011 at 12:20 pm
There have been about 15 kids that have transferred from Washington to Kennedy. The coaches from Washington are coach carter and coach eddie. It is not illegal to follow a coach. People do it all the time. But it is illegal to have spring ball since the beginning of May and be in full pads (helmets, shoulder pads, and leg pads) and be hitting for the last 3 weeks. It is also illegal to have 8th graders be working out with the football team before the graduate junior high. Who will catch them? Probably no one, but go down to the football field this week and next week from 3:20pm- 6pm and see them practice and saturdays 9-12.
June 9th, 2011 at 12:52 pm
wow 15 from one school? like 8th graders coming in? or upper classmen?
June 9th, 2011 at 1:09 pm
i didnt even know all that, but it proves my point no one will do anything thats why they are getting away with it.
June 9th, 2011 at 1:13 pm
NMCOUGAR 32,
some serious ncs violations going on over there…..if that’s really happening
June 9th, 2011 at 1:14 pm
Coach carter coaches for Washington now?
June 9th, 2011 at 1:24 pm
norcal are they on the up swing or not? If your not sure about this season then what are you talking about? What victory the last 2 seasons made you feel theyve turn it around and not just beat crap? Why do you think they didnt make ncs last year. Good luck verse the dfal wouldnt mind seeing them win but please beat a good team before calling yourself a good team. Who is moreau playing anyways?
June 9th, 2011 at 1:50 pm
Its 15 kids that have transferred as of now, the kids at the junior high are excited about watching the full dress inter squad scrimmage this saturday at 9am. I heard 1 parent complain about how football kids are getting signed off for detentions but the other kids have to still serve their susspensions and detentions.
June 9th, 2011 at 1:58 pm
bval he said he coaches for jfk now. all i know is it was one freshmen (carter) and one var coach. but its not the carter from berk. its deandre(sac state bound wr from whs)carter’s dad. dont know the other one but i heard eddie smith is not coaching there he just works out with the kids
June 9th, 2011 at 6:59 pm
BVAL “Expert”:
#26: “It might not mean anything, but it sure as hell would tell you how good their passing game is. EarHustler sounds really ignorant.”
So, 7 on 7, with no pass rush, would tell you how good their passing game is? And I sound ignorant (rhetorical)?
Hmmmmm.
June 9th, 2011 at 8:58 pm
EarHustler- don’t open your mouth please until you know they rules to passing league games. Their might not be a “REAL” pass rush HOWEVER they do have a time limit for the quarterback to get the ball out their hands for a reasonable amount of time. So that defeats your statement “So, 7 on 7, with no pass rush, would tell you how good their passing game is?” I have seen one before and know how it works. (Respectful tone of voice)
June 10th, 2011 at 8:51 am
Conrats Sunny on the HWD BBall job. JFK is doin dirt. Maybe thats what coach Mackie learned at Logan yrs ago.
June 10th, 2011 at 11:31 am
NM 32
If these violations are going on, as you say there, report them to Coach Swift. He is in tight with Lemmon and will handle business. Simple as that.
June 11th, 2011 at 11:09 am
Anything on the Accal? Who’s perdicted to win that leauge? What are pinoles chances at making it all the way?
June 11th, 2011 at 2:40 pm
Berkeley will win league in 2012.
June 11th, 2011 at 7:10 pm
Anyone know how passing tournament went at laney earlier today? what teams looked ok ? what players should we be watching for on the horizion? How concord and washington look having to start over on offense after losing there top qb’s and wr’s from last yeasr?
June 11th, 2011 at 7:27 pm
Football Guy,
I was out there until @ 3, from what I saw Washington really struggled, they had one of the lowest point totals for the day. Concord still looked pretty solid, the qb is no Lloyd but he held his own. Concord looked strong definately in the weightroom. No team really stood out, Alameda has a reciever that was making plays all day, Freedom had one of the highest point totals of the day.Amador Valley didn’t look real crisp;but, it’s early still. Encinal was without their qb, he was taking his ACT or SAT, along with their lb Kahuanui. Overall Concord, Freedom, Logan 2, Pinole Valley looked ok. Skyline didn’t look bad either, the only OAL rep.
June 11th, 2011 at 7:51 pm
The passing league was today.. Im not surprised that Washington did bad.. i actually saw it coming, i saw that they were losing quite a few seniors. A team that surprised me was it seems like Concord still looks good, which is good for them. I thought they will hurt big time they are completely losing their seniors form last year. So thats good to hear that they are looking good.
Looks like Concord, Freedom, Logan, Pinole, and skyline. are heading towards the right direction. Logan had a very young team last year. I predicted them being really good this year. Freedom is returning their their quarterback and some good WR’s.. I expect them to contend for a BVAL championship this year
June 11th, 2011 at 7:56 pm
Sounds about right for this time of the year teams.
teams getting the rust off first competition. How did the walker kid from JFK RICHMOND do?
June 11th, 2011 at 8:06 pm
Football Guy,
JFK , Richmond wasn’t out there today. Moreau and Encinal were the lone BSAL teams. Hopefully Skyline has a line to help their skill positions. From what I saw today, Concord still looks strong after losing their senior playmakers. The loss of Washington’s players from graduation and whatever else is going on between them and Kennedy, Fremont, was obvious. 12 pts after 2 games ? I know its passing league ,it’s early ;but, 12 pts isn’t alot even in passing league..
June 11th, 2011 at 8:11 pm
Well it sounds like the teams will stable coaching staffs have there programs going in the right directions and those programs that are in flux are suffering some. I agree with you BVAL expert sounds as if Washingtons run maybe coming to an end have alot of talent to replace they will struggle this year.
June 11th, 2011 at 8:21 pm
Hey thanks guy’s for all of your updates.
June 11th, 2011 at 8:27 pm
I think you hit it right on the head, it was definately obvious which teams had stable staffs. Alameda has a new head coach , who was actually the OC, a new DC, and a new OC . Their program is young but have alot of upswing. Coach Alameda from Pinole had his team looking pretty sharp and they return the ACCAL offensive player of the yr.
June 11th, 2011 at 8:38 pm
Hey guy’s I heard Kennedy of Richmond has the Quaterback from Pinole last year Tay Holley. Does that mean Kenny Walker numbers will be more impressive this year?
June 11th, 2011 at 8:44 pm
I also heard that Pinole beat Concord in that passing leauge. Yeah I know it’s only passing leauge.
June 11th, 2011 at 8:57 pm
Thanks guys,
It was a good run for Washington over the years..
Football guy are you talking about the kid Walker that does track for JFK of Richmond because he also does football too? But JFK of Richmond didnt participate in the passing league
June 11th, 2011 at 9:34 pm
All ‘n All not a bad start to the season, does anyone know if CCC is having a passing league tourney and or camp again this year ?
June 11th, 2011 at 10:08 pm
Eagle12 isnt alameda basically the same staff minus rocklin? What happened over there last season was there a munity on rocklin?
June 11th, 2011 at 10:28 pm
I don’t know all the particulars over there , I was talking to the OC today and got the rundown on their staff. I believe the OC was the head JV coach last season from what I gathered today.
June 12th, 2011 at 1:34 am
Ok thought they were going to be there at laney.I here oregon st is interested in the walker kid as a DB.
offer maybe there. yeah CCC is doing a passing tourney on june 25th and a contact camp sometime in july. it’s football season folks and time to get things in gear should be a great year and season can’t wait.
June 13th, 2011 at 4:51 am
y do coaches say passing league
doesnt matter
June 13th, 2011 at 6:36 am
If passing league doesnt matter i guess 7 0n 7 reps with your own team doesnt matter nor does reps against air. passing league is great for the kids to learn spacing and timing on routes against a live opponent and great for the qb to practice seeing coverage and making good decisions under somewhat live fire. Not to mention the kids practice at an up tempo ” game like” environment. its also fun for the kids. I see alot of upside to passing league.
June 13th, 2011 at 10:05 am
Why do some coaches saying passing league doesn’t matter? Because teams will come out to passing league and do things that are unrealistic to real football in an attempt to win a passing league game. Some teams will exclusively play cover 5 (man under 2 deep). They will run 5 underneath patterns and sit back in the pocket and look around and throw a completion at 4 seconds (won’t happen in real football, that will be a sack), and generally do things they would never do on friday night and be successful. Other teams will run their regular coverages and normal playbook in an effort to get better, and then lose to the “professional” passing league teams. It’s frustrating. But I don’t think they “don’t matter”. You can improve your game win or lose in passing league if you do it right.
June 13th, 2011 at 11:06 am
2 man is not hard to beat so the teams that lock up in only that are making it easy for our qb. your right though four seconds is unrealistic we focus on 2.5 to get the ball off. If you do it right you can accomplish alot and the kids really enjoy it so it can be a win win. I have run into teams with lb dropping on first sound to 15 yards, guess they dont play the run. we run screen at five to give our full back some passes and make the lb play real football. There are ways such as this to keep the defense honest and practice the simple things like teaching your fullback to catch. Again if you do it right you can get alot accomplished if you just want to win then run spread and leave your stop watch at home.
June 13th, 2011 at 1:32 pm
Football Guy,
Nor Cal Preps has an article on Walker and Eric Mims the other reciever, who’s also carrying an offer. Apparently Walker has upwards of 20 ? offers. Read the article in norcal preps. Kennedy should be airing it out this season, any idea who the qb is ?
June 13th, 2011 at 2:56 pm
In my opinion passing league is very important and critical to your program. It might not be important win or lose, but the whole idea of letting your players learn the system is important because it can be contributing factor to the season…
Most teams in the east bay and where im from usually dont change their whole offense or defense not because they dont want to reveal some of their secret plays.. They usually run what I call “Program Plays”, the programs basic plays, or in other words plays that are taught at the Freshman level all the way up to the Varsity level. Teams out here usually do that, and dont show their better plays.
Defensively, teams will run their basic coverage’s and not do anything fancy, to once again not show the real plays that the team relies on. Which is very smart.
I rarely see teams from the NCS. Really change up their whole offensive playbook. Most teams usually stick to what they do
June 13th, 2011 at 2:59 pm
no idea on Qb do know that oregon st is very interested in walker with his speed and size he should be able to write his own ticket. Passing leagues matters far as the work you get in and the competition you face. rather you when or lose is what dont matter
Coaches with the mind set i want to get my team work an drun there actual coverages and passing offense are the ones who win in november and december when things really matter.
June 13th, 2011 at 3:31 pm
I agree , 1 team that stood out on offense as being effective and running their passing tree was Los Banos. Very effective in finding holes in covers 2,3,and 4. They ran a hook route at about 12 back to 10 and couldn’t be stopped. Their recievers were precise and showed strong hands. First time seeing them.
June 13th, 2011 at 3:38 pm
If coaches didn’t think passing league tournaments were important , I don’t think they would waste the time and money to go. I
June 13th, 2011 at 3:40 pm
If coaches didn’t think passing league tournaments were important , I don’t think they would waste the time and money to go. It’s a great opportunity to get reps on both sides of the ball for your vets and younger players. A great coaching tool as well.
June 13th, 2011 at 8:41 pm
You guys are all right about passing league..The better teams are the ones who take advantage of it.
I dont know if any of you guys knew this.. but Walker was with a BVAL team his sophomore year when he was on varsity year.. and I heard rumors that he was having trouble with his grades and was pretty close to getting cut from the team. So i wouldn’t be surprised if he goes to a JC because of his grades.. but that was two years ago. But still i question his work ethnic in the class room.
June 13th, 2011 at 9:53 pm
Coaches think passing league tournaments are helpful more than important, it’s that the results aren’t necessarily that important to them. Being a great passing league team isn’t necessarily an indicator of having a great season just as being a poor passing league team isn’t an indicator of having a poor season.
June 14th, 2011 at 9:56 am
The qb for Kennedy is Tay Holley from Pinole.
June 14th, 2011 at 10:06 am
Well Mr. Holley has some nice targets to throw too…..Mims and Walker should be a good match up with Beau Banks from Encinal, whichever one Banks ends up covering..
June 14th, 2011 at 10:22 am
How is JFK-Kennedy looking this year Thedude? You seem to have some inside information. Will they compete for a BSAL league title this year?
June 14th, 2011 at 10:54 am
From what I can see, it seems as if Kennedy is traveling along the same path as moreau is. I would even go as far as to put them as the 4th best team in the league. The Bo Banks and Walker matchup will be one to see. Encinal has lost some key components from the year before but as we have all seen that hasnt seemed to stop them in the past couple of seasons. They look good on both sides of the ball just really inexperienced in the secondary with the exception of Banks. Any word on any of the other teams in that league?
June 14th, 2011 at 11:44 am
bval expert
i heard some truth in what ur saying about walker grades was not great while at freedom, but in conversations with some people including a parent of a player thats going to college on scholarship, and that parent confirmed that freedom high school does not have any kind of study hall or tutoring, some kids need academic support, and walker wasnt the only kid that was struggling, from what i hear many of the kids are at that school
June 14th, 2011 at 2:24 pm
JFK-Richmond had pieces last season, but clearly something was off in coaching/development. Severely limited offense (though they did some interesting things) and a D which had it’s issues.
June 14th, 2011 at 4:06 pm
BHSFAN- that parent is kind of wrong… Freedom does have programs that students can rely on… there is a math tutoring program during school and after school… and a period during school where you can do your homework.. and thats it. Its not like freedom doesnt have any academic support… for some schools it is mandatory. My resource is a former teacher that retired from this school told me… so it sounds like Walker and other players from freedom.. dont take advantage of it
June 14th, 2011 at 4:07 pm
also.. thats maybe why he moved to a school thats academics were lower then freedoms
June 14th, 2011 at 5:29 pm
From what I hear Encinal will be loaded this year with a bunch of good JV talent from last years team coming up. Any truth to that?
JFK-Rich has many great athletes but they just need HC Byrd to put it all together. They had an okay year for it being his first year and there won’t be a drop off in talent, thats for sure. Was Ken. Walker number 2 last year?
June 14th, 2011 at 5:31 pm
Encinal hasn’t lost a game in the BSAL in 3 years I don’t think any of those teams really believe they have a chance to beat them. Moreau gave them a hell of a game on SENOIR NIGHT & Playing for an NCS spot but this year they play at Encinal’s senior night. After last year that game won’t be close.
June 14th, 2011 at 6:23 pm
PERKIN, How does Encinal look this year?
June 14th, 2011 at 6:29 pm
Im not an “encinal” fan but i think they are just good in their area only.. I think that they wont be able to put up the same amount of stats against teams out of their league.. Now im not talking about playing against a team that only has 500 or just barley over 1,000 students that go to their school.. im talking about the big boys.. teams that have 2,000 and more students lets see how well they play against those schools?
I found this piece of information online for any fans of Encinal. its their passing league schedule for laney
2011 Laney Passing League Schedule:
June 21 7pm vs Albany
June 28 6pm vs Alameda
June 30 7pm vs Oakland High
July 5 8pm vs Castlemont
July 7 7pm vs St. Liz
July 12 6pm vs St. Mary’s
July 14 6pm vs Albany
July 19 6pm vs Skyline
July 21 7pm vs Oakland High
ENJOY!
June 14th, 2011 at 6:40 pm
Come on D-III was loaded last year better then D-II & they came 4th quarter shot. Give the team credit They’ve been doing it for 3-4 years.
Only 3 OAL teams in Laney Passing league?? Whats up with Mack? After all that last year they aren’t attending Passing League this year? Whats up Coach Mack??
June 14th, 2011 at 6:44 pm
Encinal this year I don’t know. Looked bad against Amador Valley. Solid against Bethel. They look tall & lean. Look like they’ve been hitting the weights. That QB from last year looks like he’s about 190lbs. but I hear he’s Like 225. Banks looks in game form. The kid who blew his knee out in the championship game had cleats on so I guess surgery was successful & is looking big. All LBs look pretty big.
June 14th, 2011 at 6:55 pm
I want to see encinal vs pittsburg.. that would be a good game
June 14th, 2011 at 7:06 pm
It would be. But from what I can gather Pitt won’t do home & home. Fremont High twice at Pitt & dogged Mac out of a home game this year.
June 14th, 2011 at 8:30 pm
All of the Encinal teams are young because they bring up a lot of the solid players from JV either in the playoffs or after just one season at the JV level. The talent of the JV team last year was full of playmakers so don’t be surprised if you see a couple sophomores starting again this season. I still would like to see them given the chance to play a larger opponent other than Serra so they could get the credit they need to become a legitiment powerhouse. Its crazy to see what they are doing down there with such low enrollment and putting out championship caliber 20-25 man rosters.
June 14th, 2011 at 9:36 pm
How about Pitt this year BVAL Expert? Will they bounce back and become the team we think they are or is it down hill they go?
June 14th, 2011 at 9:39 pm
wow what is hayward doing bringing in someone who i heard was 3-7 last years at liberty now you make him a head coach there better off keeping there last horrible coach from last year MAY GOD HAVE MERCY ON THEM
June 14th, 2011 at 9:44 pm
Encinal has nothing to prove even though they can’t get past Serra. Serra keeps them on schedule for a reason and if they were to get past them this year that would be good enough for me. Serra in the EBAL would finish 2 or 3 every year.
June 14th, 2011 at 10:31 pm
Serra and Encinal is always competitive I just dont think Encinal has the depth to compete with them, 2 years ago the score was 7-7 at half and they lost 21-13 and this year the score was 13-20 at half and serra scored 3 late Td s to pull away.. I Hear both teams got better , so this should be an Interesting one .. But to say encinal will loose to “bigger schools is a Over statement” “BVAL EXPERT”.. D3 is better then d2.. and if u subtract De La salle from d1.. d3 and d1 can have a good match ups.. and last time i checked encinal has been in that championship game 3 years and counting. so No i dont think they will, Neither will Marin, or cardinal Newman.. Just ask novato in there Championship days, they would take on anyone. But no body waned to play them because they didn’t want to face the fact of losing to a 2a.. with the exception of foothill
June 14th, 2011 at 11:54 pm
Man Down- Pittsburg will be very good this year i predicted to win league for the BVAL.. They are returning almost every position both sides of the ball.. But mostly returning almost their whole defense.. Linebackers and a few lineman returning.. returning Malik Watson and their running back #33.. I expect them to win league and go 5-0 in league.. They will be very good.. Thank you for asking Man Down.
“C Sparks”- You can not subtract De La Salle from D1, because its like saying they are an independent school (which they are not).
It is really hard to compare encinal to another team or say they can beat a team from the (EBAL, BVAL,DFAL,DVAL) because they have never stepped foot on east bay soil. So you cant really head in that direction just yet.. yea the did good against Serra but you just cant go there yet. It never happened yet.
They should ask pittsburg to play them because they werent afraid to play against granite bay
June 15th, 2011 at 1:40 am
pittsburg and encinal would be a great one, bval expert.
June 15th, 2011 at 9:42 am
Encinal v. Serra will be a good game, Encinal at home is especially hard to beat and 2 yrs ago Serra had issues in the ” Nailhouse Swamp. ” Trodder may not be back until mid season or later. Isaiah Hunter , played JV last year , RB/LB is a very good player and is just 1 more playmaker on both sides of the ball for Tenorio.
NorCal preps has a nice write up on Pitt’s QB.
June 15th, 2011 at 10:23 am
This thread seems to have trended towards talking about Encinal and Pittsburg for now, so let’s dig deeper, shall we?
Encinal: Their success comes from 100% dedication and commitment from their players and the coaching staff. Encinal has incredible talent, great playmakers. They also have an outstanding staff, and the players are only allowed to compete for rosters spots on the varsity if they put in the mandatory road work in the off season. No road work = no roster spot.
Take their great athletes, led by excellent and committed coaches, with a mandatory off season program, and good timing, and you have a great Encinal Jets era. Well done.
Pittsburg: They were not a good team last year, even though they had players. This year, they are the talk of the east bay, “Pirates are back” “Pitt is it” and the “Pittsburg of old” is loaded for bear.
These statements seem to be true because the clandestine chatter picked up by our intelligence sources concur and the outstanding players of Pitt this season will positively punish, pound, petrify and do a perfect job of pointing their game towards the pinnacle of penultmiate victory.
Pitt is the real deal again after a 2010 hiatus.
June 15th, 2011 at 10:55 am
How does Heritage look this year?
June 15th, 2011 at 11:14 am
As we all know Pitt has maybe the best athletes in the bay area and fill there roster every year with at least 40-50 players. Why can’t they get to the level of the great De La Salle? They should dominate every year with the kind of talent and size they possess. They are maybe one of the only teams in the bay that can match DLS athletes and roster size to win a game.
June 15th, 2011 at 12:30 pm
Athlete for athlete I think Pitt has better then DLS. No doubt more speed. That guy Galli is an under achiever. Team never looks like they spend much time in the weightroom. Scheme is so so I/SPread, man tp man on D. Big Dog FB. If he wants to play big Dog football then his focus should be Srength & Speed training & it isn’t. How many 4th quarter losses did they have last year? I remember atleast 2.
June 15th, 2011 at 1:06 pm
Mandown- Short memory. MV took dLS to task three years? ago. Lost by 7.
dLS @ Cal tied in the fourth in 08 until Khyri Knowles ripped a 40 yarder with 4:00 left in the 4th. dLS win by 7. 2010, dLS @ Cal, Grizzlies down by 6 after a miraculous TD grab by Sarmenta with 3:20 left after being down three scores at half. Mo surge building…. Cal recovers onside kick at dLS 35!!.. Bedlam as Cal had dominated the LOS second half…. but flagged since the pooch didn’t touch the ground and touched first -past 10 yds- by two Grizz (who knew THAT rule?) and covered by a third.
dLS drives, 2 pointer conversion to W by 14. Didn’t Pitt get blown out in the NCS final in 09?
June 15th, 2011 at 3:01 pm
Who will win the ACCAL Which team Pinole or Bekeley? Which team has the best chance at a championship this year?
June 15th, 2011 at 3:08 pm
Not sure if anyone has mentioned that Mister Marshall Cotton (former DLS sophomore varsity starter and hurdler) has transferred to Pitt for his Sr. year. I understand he is participating in their summer workouts and passing league tournaments including one this past weekend.
June 15th, 2011 at 3:33 pm
Pinole looks up to Par saw them at the Laney toourney. They should be good this year. Athletic QB but can he complete a pass? He can they win league he can’t they won’t.
June 15th, 2011 at 3:41 pm
@ Perkin is that all they have? If so no way there gonna beat Berkeley.
June 15th, 2011 at 3:56 pm
I said up to Par. Last year they almost went all the way. They have the ACCAL returning Offensive MVP. They’ve been spitting out the same teams since Alameda has been there like a broken record(I mean that in a good way) & always playing B-High tough or beating them even in down years. There only question to be 6-5/7-4 or 9-2/10-2 is can they complete a pass. But I haven’t seen B-High yet so I can’t speak on them yet.
June 15th, 2011 at 5:45 pm
C sparks- thanks good luck to encinal this year.. hope all is well.
Killer D- I can only speak for pittsburg because i dont know that much about encinal.. but your right about everything about pittsburg. They have alot of players returning so that might give them a big edge in the BVAL.
MVAL- This will be a down year for heritage this year.. they have completely lost every player on both sides of the ball.. so i dont expect to much from them this year.
Perkin and Man Down- you guys are right but another thing that i want to add on to that is Galli is the one that calls the plays. and i think he needs to expand his playbook more.. he only has a couple of formations in his playbook, which limits the teams success
June 15th, 2011 at 8:11 pm
Galii is a very good coach but in my opinion he needs to change something down there because its there. They have what most teams don’t, a talented roster. They get OAL type players and EBAL numbers. Can’t beat that. No team will ever be able to compete with DLS if they don’t hit the weights. I don’t know if thats Pitt’s case but if it is its time for them to think change.
June 15th, 2011 at 9:28 pm
Agreed.. Dont get me wrong galli is a good coach.. i just think the athleticism of pittsburg takes them very far some years. but your right
June 15th, 2011 at 11:21 pm
how’s freedom looking this year?
June 16th, 2011 at 12:05 am
does anybody follow the HAAL? is HWD the only coaching change? any early predictions for this season?
June 16th, 2011 at 1:09 am
ManDown – Ken. Walker was 1 if I recall correctly. No. 2 was QB/WR/RB/everything Rob Molder. Heck of an athlete and fun to watch. Wonder if he’s going anywhere next season.
Berkeley should be interesting next season. They should have talent as always, and now enter the second season under that coach. The non-league schedule is solid. Will the M.O. be the same as always: I-formation power rushing, light passing game, nasty defense?
June 16th, 2011 at 9:13 am
@ Joe so as I read your post. Looks like Bekeley will win the ACCAL?
June 16th, 2011 at 9:47 am
Where are the weekend passing leauge games at?
June 16th, 2011 at 10:12 am
How about Deer Valley BVAL Expert? You seen to have some of the loop on that league.
June 16th, 2011 at 11:24 am
If you want to see some action come to CAL on Sunday for full contact scrimmaging for the cal football high school camp
June 16th, 2011 at 12:32 pm
foothill is this weeks passing tournament
i believe the contra costa JC tourney is coming up the following week as well.
two completely different styles at the two…the EBAL style of play then the speed and athleticism style, both should be interesting…
anyone know who is at them?
June 16th, 2011 at 12:48 pm
Foothill is Friday. Starts a.m. Cal, AV for sure. MV, Gran usually there. Previous years DoV, Logan, etc. Past three years not solely EBAL.
June 16th, 2011 at 1:37 pm
So what teams will be at DVC on the 24th. Anyone know’s? I Know Pitt and the green machine was there last year. Any other information on who else will be there?
June 16th, 2011 at 2:12 pm
HSfootball- Freedom will look ok this year they will have some good WR’s this year coming back and a really good quarterback. I predicted them to finish third in the BVAL.
There are some questions i have about freedom though.
1) How well will Hartwig prepare a un-experienced o-line(they only have one 0-line member coming back) This can make or break their season.
2) Defense has always been a struggle for the Falcons. So my question is. What changes can they make to help out their defense this year.
3) How will they responded to their running back situation? D’amora Cooper has left Freedom (RB) I’ve heard from parents that Freedom’s JV won their league last year, and i heard they have really talented Running backs on JV. One running back is returning but diddnt get that much playing time, and two Running backs from JV are coming up to varsity. So that will be interesting to look at.
Overall freedom will look ok this year.. I heard they did really good at the Laney passing league scoring the most points out of every team there that participated.. they should finish 500 even or little bit above 500 or a little bit below 500. I predicted them to finish Third.
Mandown- Its really hard to say about Deer Valley. History as shown that the Wolverines have not had any problems with replacing people due to graduation. They have always been consistent when comes to league play. Some questions about Deer Valley…
1) How will they handle the Quarterback situation with Michael Behr gone? They will have a good sized quarterback named Ian Hardman he is 6-3 who will be a junior next yr.
2) How will they replace there keys players on defense and offense? They are losing Morton and Ransom two of their best players on defense also Lamontay Marshall leading rusher.
Deer Valley will probably finish 2nd or 3rd this year
June 16th, 2011 at 2:17 pm
the dude- what is the date for the dvc pass league
June 16th, 2011 at 9:17 pm
@ Perkin June the 25th.
June 16th, 2011 at 9:19 pm
@ Perkin my bad! It was meant for BVAL expert.
June 16th, 2011 at 9:22 pm
alright thanks..
June 16th, 2011 at 9:24 pm
what time does it start?
June 17th, 2011 at 7:37 am
is there a passing league this coming weekend, 7/18, 7/19? if so, where?
thx.
June 17th, 2011 at 2:34 pm
theres one at liberty that starts at nine in the morning this saturday.. Liberty, Arroyo, Granada, Antioch, and Tokay
June 17th, 2011 at 4:02 pm
anybody know what teams will be going to the passing league at dvc on the 6/25? there’s also a camp/scrimmage at logan today. i don’t know what teams will be at logan.
June 17th, 2011 at 4:41 pm
I know DLS will be participating at the DVC tourney..not sure of any other teams…
June 18th, 2011 at 12:59 am
I know Pitt was at DVC and Pinole. With the green machine and three other teams.
June 19th, 2011 at 11:59 am
The Logan camp was on friday and the teams were Logan, Castro Valley, Tennyson and Skyline. It was a great camp with alot of competition and hitting!!
June 19th, 2011 at 3:35 pm
Not very good teams at that camp. I heard Tennyson is there every year. Doeasn’t seem to help much. Any word on Mack or did they cancel their season & live off last year?
June 19th, 2011 at 6:05 pm
Just got word that Freedom won the Laney Passing league tournament couple of day ago.. Good Job to the Falcons with a good accomplishment. I might have to change my prediction on how well they will do this season
June 20th, 2011 at 10:12 am
Perkin,
Now that’s funny…..The House of Mac(k) has been awfully quiet lately. Has anyone heard of their summer plans, Marin Camp in July maybe ?
June 20th, 2011 at 8:39 pm
That guy coach MAc is hiding under a rock some where. If he’s not atending Laney Passing legue in his own town he don’t have a team. He said he had 37 kids on JVs that play games everyday against Var. What a joke.
Recruiting didn’t go well no JV team. Like everybody was bloggin a one hitter quitter like Vanilla Ice.
June 20th, 2011 at 8:58 pm
Perkin,
Does it make you feel better?
June 20th, 2011 at 9:27 pm
ahaha those schools arent consistent
June 20th, 2011 at 10:12 pm
anybody gonna be at the passing league at dvc this coming weekend? anybody know what confirmed teams are going to be there?
June 21st, 2011 at 12:03 am
anyone know how the skyline offense line looks?
June 21st, 2011 at 7:53 am
Some clown who is the actual Head Coach of a team bad mouthing other schools calling them trash & can’t get enough of patting himself on the back shutting up? Yeah it makes me feel good.
But the guy was speaking on everybody & how good he was he compared himself & his program to everybody. We’re bigger faster stronger. We can beat this school. We can beat that school. We got in this team’s ass at a scrimmage. Now the truth is coming out in his silence.
But I want to hear why the guy who was the key to 5 SIlver Bowls isn’t here telling why he isn’t gonna be able to compete this year. The guy took credit for O-High being good after he was gone & went 0-10. Come on.
June 21st, 2011 at 12:24 pm
This has been a very interesting thread to read. Let me offer a few thoughts about Pittsburg. I think the “Pitt has a roster of great athletes” belief gets way overstated. They had a couple of good athletes last year but no great ones. Last years team was incredibly young, the 0-5 start being indicative of that. In that 0-5 stretch, Pitt was averaging over 8 turnovers a game.
Yes, this years team has a lot of returners; the OB, all of their receivers, TE, RB, and linebackers. But the team does have some areas of concern. The most intriguing prospect is the OB Malik Watson. He is a smart kid (high GPA) with a cannon of an arm. The running back Feao Vunipola is bigger, leaner and faster than last year. A hardworking and humble young man. Pitt has a very good off season condition/lifting program that begins in January and runs straight through August.
Pitt will also benefit from three very interesting transfers; a speed guy from Deer Valley, a RB/SS from De La Salle, and D-Lineman from Trinity Texas.
No doubt Pitt will be much improved but I will reserve pontificating their greatness until I see on the field.
June 21st, 2011 at 1:46 pm
HSfootball- i heard DLS pitt and freedom will be there for sure
Perkin- are you talking about mac? sounds like that coach doesnt know what he is talking about. But surprisingly teams and coaches have that mentality but thats very unprofessional.
June 21st, 2011 at 7:15 pm
“Last years team was incredibly young, the 0-5 start being indicative of that. In that 0-5 stretch, Pitt was averaging over 8 turnovers a game.”
I’m sorry, but I have a hard time believing that Pitt was averaging more than 8 turnovers a game. 6 turnovers in one game would be absolutely brutal, but averaging more than 8 over a 5 game span? Sometimes a team doesn’t even get the ball 8 times in a game. Maybe in hoops but that is pretty hard to do on the gridiron.
June 21st, 2011 at 7:54 pm
@Prep Fan,
As difficult as it may be to comprehend on paper, from the stands, Pitt was inventing ways to turn the ball over. The first half against Berkeley and Mac, the third quarter against Granite Bay alone, Pitt had four turnovers. Many of these were not even contact related. RB fumbles, linebacker picks it up runs 60 yard for a TD. QB throws a pic six. Switch QBs, back ups throws a pic six.
The only difference I saw between the 0-5 run in conference and being 5-0 in league were the turnovers. The Pitt coaches were giddy at only turning over the ball 3 times.
June 21st, 2011 at 8:04 pm
By the way, Pitt is in a three-way camp with Concord and Ygnacio Valley this week. After two days,Concord has looked good. They don’t have Lloyd and Pica, but they have a good offense that they run really well. They also have a beast of a D-lineman. YV does not have much. I don’t know if it was Pitts aggressive defense or YV’s lack of any talent, but I thought some of the YV kids might get hurt. Although I am close to the Pitt program, they are going to have to prove that last year was a fluke. Pitt fans are very unforgiving.
June 21st, 2011 at 8:07 pm
VERY disappointing non-league schedule for Cal Hi:
Washington, College Park and Castro Valley
They are a better program than this….just terrible.
June 21st, 2011 at 8:13 pm
Pitt,
Thanks for the update. I hope your boys have a successful season. I knew about Cotton from DLS, however, I was not aware of the other 2 transfers from TX and Deer Valley. Will all 3 of them be starters? What gives? Coach G flying to TX to recruit?? (-:
Refresh our memories, who are you guys playing in the preseason? We’ll see you at the Scrimmage in August.
Best of luck.
June 21st, 2011 at 8:15 pm
Junior, +1
Would have been nice to see Cal play a WCAL team or a SJC team.
June 21st, 2011 at 8:20 pm
Perkin,
I took the silence for maturity. Without saying anything, you could infer that he accepts that “last year was last year” and that he and MACK will do their talking on the field.
And I took your comments as childish…that you would need to come on a blog (anonymously) to make yourself feel better. Feel better now?
June 21st, 2011 at 8:38 pm
8 turnovers a game is putting it on kinda thick.
pitt also has a transfer from mt diablo hes a lb/rb nice size kid, going to b a load
qb for pitt can sling it big time, pitt SHOULD be really good this year
June 21st, 2011 at 8:42 pm
silvergreen
do u know why marshall cotton left dls
June 21st, 2011 at 8:46 pm
Silvergreen: Cal should have scheduled a team from BOTH the WCAL and the SJS.
SRV did it: Folsom, Mitty, Washington
June 21st, 2011 at 8:49 pm
Bhsfan,
I have some thoughts, however, I don’t think it’s appropriate to discuss in a public forum. I will say this; Cotton is a very nice kid with a good heart and a great athlete. If he stays focused in the classroom and in the field he’ll thrive at Pitt.
June 21st, 2011 at 8:55 pm
You never know what will happen in the BVAL so i wouldnt be surprised if Pitt will struggle im not getting my hopes high for anyone in the BVAL, every team has a potential to struggle. Last year was really whack, Pittsburg beat heritage the first game… but couldnt beat them in the playoffs…. for some unexplainable reason.. and also deer valley almost losing to Liberty and almost losing to Freedom. I wouldnt be surprised if this happens again this. Nothing to get to excited about.
Galli needs to expand his playbook

Good to see SRV mixing it up early in the season. Both Mitty and Folsom will be solid. How about a Grant and Cal match up? I would have paid to see that!
June 21st, 2011 at 9:05 pm
I’m pretty sure Cal High has those 3 teams on a 2 year home & home contract, as that is the same preseason schedule they played last season when people also criticized it. But those agreements were made after a 5-6 season when they were beaten by Washington in the playoffs. There was no way for Billeci to have known that both Washington and CP would end up getting moved to D2, if it was even Billeci who scheduled it.
I’d look for them to upgrade that schedule for next season now that the contracts have run their course. But it really doesn’t matter because they are not eligible to play in a bowl game unless they beat DLS, and if they do that no one will be saying anything about their schedule.
SRV has a much tougher preseason schedule with Mitty and Folsom. I like the variety of playing teams in different sections, but no D1 schools.
June 21st, 2011 at 9:15 pm
folsom vs srv should b a shoot out
June 21st, 2011 at 9:26 pm
Cal played Washington in 2009, 2010 and now 2011.
I do not believe it would have been difficult to get out of the CV game- cant imagine CV would have balked after being outscored 92-14 vs Cal last year. No execuse for the Grizz’s- they need to challenge themselves and not worry so much about their W-L record.
It was just 2008 when Cal gave Bellevue a great game. Playing an upper tier SJS team (D1 or D2), a WCAL team (or Palo Alto) and College Park would have been the right call.
Step up coach.
June 21st, 2011 at 9:34 pm
Prep,
Not criticizing here, all of us who saw Cal play last year know that they had a hell of a team and most likely will be a force this year. That said, I know I would have liked to have seen Cal tested early with teams incorporating similar talent. I bet you are right on the home home agreements, those types of things can be a roll of the dice. Do you know how many starters return for Cal next year?
June 21st, 2011 at 9:39 pm
@Bhsfan,
For my own amusement I am going to try and dig up some stats from those games. The 8 turnovers is the number the Pitt staff was tossing around. If Pitt was not averaging 8 turnovers, it was darn close. The Mount transfer you are referring too is Feao Vunipolo. He, along five others transferred from Mount before last season. All of them, with the exception of Vunipolo, had a difficult time with Coach Mohammad’s discipline and ended up quitting. Feao is a really nice and polite kid.
@S1lverngreen,
Yes, the DLS kid is Cotton. Seems to be fitting in really well. On the defense side, he will start. He addresses a Pitt weakness. On offense, he will split time with Feao running the ball. The speed guy from DV will rotate (my guess) with the other three Wrs; the 6-5 Fredericks, the sure handed Barnes, and the most talented of the bunch, Mapp (again, just my humble observation). Pitt has been lining the DV kid up in the slot. Looking for some mismatches I assume. He is very quick. He will also start at corner (my opinion). Gives Pitt a very good lock-down corner. The transfer from Texas is a Polynesian kid with a big athletic frame (around 6-4 225). Supposed to be a very good Rugby player. He seems to be a little raw though. Has been lining up at DE.
Non conference schedule is Foothill, Berkeley, Monte Vista, Jefferson (South City), and Granite Bay. Granite Bay will be, by far, the most difficult. Got to hand it to Coach Galli for a fairly difficult non conference schedule.
Cheers.
June 21st, 2011 at 9:49 pm
Thanks Pitt. Re: Cotton he is also a State guy in the 110 HH. Last question, is Granite @ home or away?
June 21st, 2011 at 9:53 pm
@BVAL Expert,
My fellow Pitt buddies would not be happy if I commented on Victor’s play calling….I was more concerned about the team’s execution rather than the play calling last season. But I also think he does not get enough credit for his, and Pittsburg’s success. Pittsburg is a very unique and difficult place to coach. The pressure he deals with within the community is, at times, unfair and unrealistic.
I do give him props for bringing in a couple of new coaches to the staff. He brought on a former Pitt head coach (can’t remember his name) to work with the offense, and a kicking coach to work with his kickers. How many other high school coaches is that “progressive”?
June 21st, 2011 at 9:56 pm
@S1lverngreen,
We have Granite Bay at home this year. They beat up Pitt last year at their place. By the way, they have a very impressive facility. After every touchdown they were shooting off fireworks. Unfortunately, we heard those fireworks much too often.
June 21st, 2011 at 10:00 pm
s1lverngreen,
Thre aren’t many starters coming back for Cal, as the entire offensive line plus Reil, Alvarez, Taft and Sarmenta were seniors. On D, there won’t be many returning starters either. But a lot like DLS is used to seeing, the underclassmen got a tremendous amount of playing time against the other teams’ first stringers last season as they did not have many close games. You may recognize some names such as Washington, Krause, Ezaburio, and Dunn who had a lot of big plays last season against other teams’ starters. It is a new team for 2011, but they got a taste of what winning feels like last season, and are working hard this summer. They don’t have the marquee names coming back like Houston, Barton, Lockie, Bruce, or Kline, but they play as a team and should be competitive.
June 21st, 2011 at 10:46 pm
@prep,
Who will be your lead back this year Dunn or Krause? Dunn runs hard, I’d venture to say he’ll be the feature back for coach B this year, yes?
June 21st, 2011 at 11:34 pm
I am interested to see how Cal handles the pressure this year. Last year nobody expected much except obviously the players and coaches in the program. This year they are the circled game on everybody’s league schedule outside of DLS and the rivalry games.
In regards to Pitt, wow three transfers and two from two of the major schools in high school football. I know they had some talented youngsters that would be moving up. Sounds like they could be the real deal this year.
For Cotton, it’s been a series of events, but like silver said a kid’s life is better not discussed on this board. All of us wish him the best.
June 21st, 2011 at 11:53 pm
I’m not sure who the lead back will be. It could very well be Karis Johnson, who was called up for the playoffs last year and impressed a lot of people for being just a sophomore. Bilecci did a good job of mixing it up last season, so nobody really knew where the ball was going.
There should be some talent in the pipeline with a strong Bears program the past few years. The Frosh team had 1 loss last year to… you guessed it DLS. The Cal JV team I believe only lost 2 or maybe 3 games, 1 of them a very close loss to DLS in the season finale with the 5,000+ plus in attendence looking on while waiting for the main event between the two 9-0 varsity squads.
June 22nd, 2011 at 9:03 am
Pitt grunt- the only good coach is the defensive coordinator. Dont get me wrong i agree he gets hardly credit for his success. but when he lines up in a formation 70 percent of the time i know what play hes running. For example its pretty obvious when he has two TE’s and calls the same run play 20 times in a row. Or when he puts his Wr at quarterback in shotgun and runs wildcat 15 times in a row.
June 22nd, 2011 at 12:17 pm
@ pitt grunt
yes he does seem like a nice kid good size too, i do recall that the coach from mt d stepped down, thats interesting. i know that if u live n bay point the district sends u to mt diablo, but i think mostly n bay point ur closer to pitt.
June 22nd, 2011 at 6:55 pm
sounds like Pitt is a Team to look out for in Divsion 1
June 22nd, 2011 at 7:05 pm
With all this talent Pitt has this year, will they even contended against DLS? I mean they have the talent and numbers so what’s missing? People are on here saying they lift weights but it doesn’t seem like it by the way they get pushed around sometimes. Pitt will you guys ever beat DLS?
June 22nd, 2011 at 9:09 pm
how is the deer valley kid who played varsity last year able to play for pitt this year? isn’t that against ncs rule or something? i thought a varsity player from a different team from the area would have to take a year off. also, does the ncs rule apply to private or catholic schools, since there also was a transfer from dls?
June 23rd, 2011 at 7:25 am
@ BVAL Expert,
I hear criticisms of every coach in the stands. Frankly, the entire staff struggled last season and that included the D-Coordinator.
@C. sparks,
I don’t know if Pitt is good enough to content in Div 1. I see strengths and weaknesses with this team. All I can predict is that they will be much improved from last years 5-5 season.
@ManDown,
As I mentioned in an earlier post, I think the Pitt talent characterization gets over played. I am originally an east coast guy who does not get caught up in the hype I hear all around me. They were certainly pushed around last year. Athletes? yes. Lifting weights? yes. But at some point you need to have a football player.
Beat DLS??? Ask me another question.
@Hsfootball,
No clue on transfer rules, but we see Pitt kids who leave us only to turn up the next year at Freedom, DV, or Antioch. Maybe someone else has better knowledge of this issue.
June 23rd, 2011 at 10:50 am
@169, Cal got plenty of attention early last year when in week 4 they blew out MV 45-3. The next week, handled SRV cleanly. The first time ever they’d beaten both Danville schools. The Pleasanton schools had weaker than typical showings following Mannion and Nottingham going D1. That set up week 10. That changes this year with the aforementioned schools putting out better products in ’11 IMO. Prep fan would agree that Billeci will have them ready, albeit a lot of new faces.
SnG- Krause is a FB/Mike, Dunn and Johnson at RB. Washington is the 4 back, but those four interchangeable. Ezeburio may be in the mix. Farley (6′ 195, was also frosh D MVP @ Will) has taken 500 more game snaps than Reil had at this point in time, so there’s experience @ QB. At Y is a Jr who lettered as a soph, but Taft overshadowed him with his breakout performance. He’s big at 6’4 and hoops- good hands. He had a 70 yarder last year. X? Sarmenta was phenomenal. A senior converted to WR is 6’4- think Shapiro- and two Jrs, one of whom who’s a three sporter, are there.
Agree that transfers look shady on the surface, but with private school tuition (no scholarships?!) economic factors and split family matters common, it’s not surprising. Lemmon was quoted last year that NCS was handling over 1,000 cases in 2010 alone.
June 23rd, 2011 at 1:10 pm
all i’m saying is that pitt got 6 transferred from mt. d last year, i believe a few from dv this year, and they are all able to play varsity football w/out the year off. how??? maybe there are special rules somewhere. there’s always a loophole somewhere. with all this talent that pitt has this year, there shouldn’t be any reason or excuses.
June 23rd, 2011 at 2:01 pm
I may be wrong on this; but, weren’t there special circumstances surrounding that school allowing players to transfer? I remeber reading something last year, not exactly sure if this is it…..if someone has more knowledge on this please share.
June 23rd, 2011 at 2:10 pm
are all eligible gpa 2.0 to play sports or are there other schools that require less than a 2.0 gpa?
June 23rd, 2011 at 2:24 pm
kids transfer every year some may b sports reasons in which ncs will not allow the kid to play, but some kids do actually move, not defending any school, player or coach but at times u have legit change of address, especially the way the economy is right now, and its a lil cheaper to live in pitt than in antioch especially n the deer valley area, as far as kids leaving mt d to go to pitt, well bay point is mt diablo district but i think pitt high is much closer to bay point than concord, wouldnt blame a parent to send they kid to a school that might b closer to home
June 23rd, 2011 at 2:40 pm
i really don’t think anybody investigates these occurences. it’s in the rule book not to do, but that’s it. it is what it is, and people will complain. some transfers are just way too obvious. people will defend it, but the truth is kids transfers for the sports reasons. either their old team is not competitive, or they believe that being on a different team can help them get further through the season. personally it doesn’t matter to me, but i hear it a lot form others. i guess some schools need more help than others to win games. we all know what goes on, but that’s where it ends…
June 23rd, 2011 at 5:39 pm
For one-time transfers I believe it is now true that a player can transfer one time from any school to another one without having to sit out a season.
I believe that is now the rule, can anyone confirm?
June 23rd, 2011 at 8:19 pm
OK, pros…where can we find, I would presume in the NCS bylaws, the rules that define player trandsfers. Now, if that info is not readily available, once more the general public, and fans of prep sports are left wondering what is going on in the NCS. Any thoughts Jimmy, Kyle, Ben…anyone??!!
June 23rd, 2011 at 8:27 pm
KillerD…try this:
cifncs.org/…/NOTICE%20OF%20ATHLETIC%20TRANSFER%20RULES.doc
June 23rd, 2011 at 8:33 pm
If it doesn’t copy…just Google: NCS student transfer rules
June 23rd, 2011 at 10:09 pm
also, how are some kids with a less than a 2.0 gpa from one school able to play at a different school when they transfer in? are there any special programs for new transferred kids to be eligible?
June 23rd, 2011 at 10:27 pm
hsfootbal,
Here is some of the verbiage from the NCS/CIF bylaws on academic eligibility: (It does appear to provide schools with some flexibility) Surprising to say the least!
Scholastic Eligibility
In order to be eligible, any student entering from the eighth grade into a CIF four-year high school, a junior high or a junior high must
have achieved a 2.0 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale in enrolled courses at the conclusion of the previous grading period. The
governing board of each school district, private school, or parochial school may adopt, as part of its policy, provisions that would
allow a student who does not achieve the above requirement in the previous grading period to remain eligible to participate in
interscholastic athletics during a probationary period.
Minimum Requirements
A student is scholastically eligible if:
a. The student is currently enrolled in at least 20 semester credits of work;
b. The student was passing in the equivalent of at least 20 semester credits of work at the completion of
the most recent grading period;
c. The student is maintaining minimum progress, as determined by the principal, toward meeting the
governing board prescribed high school graduation requirements.
In the North Coast Section, minimum progress toward graduation is defined as:
1) The student has earned credits at a rate of no less than the equivalent of 20 semester credits of work behind normal
progress at any time prior to graduation, AND
2) The student is no more than two courses behind normal progress in successfully completing specific courses required
for HS graduation as prescribed by the governing board.
d. The student has maintained during the previous grading period a minimum 2.0 grade-point average,
on a 4.0 scale, in all enrolled courses.
June 23rd, 2011 at 10:32 pm
so as i understand, w/o a 2.0 = ineligible. what i am saying is that how can one school say a kid is ineligible, then transfers to a different school and becomes eligible? confusing…
June 24th, 2011 at 6:50 am
It appears that kids struggling academically can get waivers or flyers to keep them eligible. According to what I read.
A kid might get a 1.8 GPA at School A, but transfer to School B, and if the Principal gives that kid a break in writing, it allows that player to immediately play ball at School B, as long as the waiver is put in force.
Seems clear
June 24th, 2011 at 9:35 am
NO ONE will go to every school and look at grades. its on the principal and the coach of the school, if they want to roll the dice to let some kids play without grades. who is going to police everything? with budget cuts the way they are i bet no one. and for all the transfer students, gil lemmon has every NCS sport to look at, it is impossible for him to focus all of his attention on football. unless it is high profile or someone pushes the issue nothing will happen to pitt or kennedy or whoever else is out there calling kids up to tranfer in. i think its a good thing. let the kids go where they want. newark has stole plenty of basketball players from kennedy its only fair if they get to pull kids now for football, and with a new staff there why not give them a little help to turn that program around
June 24th, 2011 at 10:23 am
Mvalfan going from one fremont school to another is one thing. But i heard the new kennedy coach is taking kids from the hayward jr high school that he taught/coached at. is that fair?
June 24th, 2011 at 10:25 am
is cv, tennyson, and arroyo the only schools participating in summer camps? how did those 3 do at those events?
June 24th, 2011 at 10:39 am
i know its againts the rules, but my point is no one will do anything. gil lemmon does not care about schools that dont bring in money for NCS. so sorry all FREMONT, HAYWARD, and OAKLAND schools your kids will RECRUITED because no one will do anything. newark might be the only school that can get gil lemmon to do anything, so as long as the kennedy coaches stay away from there they are fine.
June 24th, 2011 at 12:16 pm
I think their are two issues when transferring. The first is the 2.0 gpa. The athlete must maintain a 2.0 from the previous academic year regardless if he is a January or summer transfer. Transferring does not wipe the slate clean. Second, the program you left must formally release you to the other school. This is were the “shenanigans” begin. Last year when the Mount Diablo 5 transferred to Pitt, 3 were not eligible to play until game #3. The excuse from MD was always paperwork related. One of players missed five games due to “paperwork” issues.
The DV transfer to Pitt arrived in January and actually ran track for Pitt. So presumably, he was released by the track program. I think football will be another issue. Could DV screw with this kid because he transferred?? Its possible.
The more I see of the Texas kid, I really don’t think his old school misses him.
June 24th, 2011 at 2:21 pm
in the long run it hurts the kids. i’m pretty sure that the kids that are playing are players, and not just some random kid that wants to join the team. the reason why these coaches are going to bat for them is to help them is because they believe these kids can help them win. would they do it for other kids that are not difference makers? NO… do they really care about the kids’ education? that’s the question. it’s a bit selfish to have a kid play for a team knowing they do not meet the 2.0 gpa, but have them play anyway because it can help their team. what does that teach the kid? as a parent, you would have to get priorities straight and figure out if you would let your kid play or work on their studies. it really isn’t that hard to get a 2.0 gpa.
June 24th, 2011 at 2:23 pm
on a different note…
anybody know how the passing league went between freedom and foothill???
June 24th, 2011 at 4:32 pm
Can anyone confirm if Pitt’s preseason game with Granite Bay is confirmed and when? Maxpreps don’t have them listed in schedule. By the way, I heard the Pitt QB got #1 marks in both the Stanford and the recent Cal passing league. Rivals.com mentions 18 colleges including Pac10 and WAC have medium interest, and one offer already from Northern Arizona. At 6-2 tall, with 3.6 GPA, the kid has brains and muscles(4.8/40, bp 415). Malik Watson, at the helm, with great support from top RBs Mister Mister Cotton (from DLS)/F. Vunipola, and a speedy and tall DV transfer at corner and three really good WRs and big guys at OL/DL, and returners at almost all positions, this could be Pitt’s year to beat. A transfer from DLS, that’s wow, very rare! I take it that MC’s family are longtime residents at Pitt so there’s no question about residency. Many DLS players either live in Pitt or Antioch area both present and in the past. Also, Galli won’t schedule strong EBAL teams Foothill/MV and an even stronger Granite Bay, if he doesn’t trust his team to really make a good show this time. Oh, forgot to mention Berkeley ( they had a good RB last year), Pitt will avenge their last-minute loss this time. What’s Jefferson doing in the list??? Well take it from Galli, there’s always a “confidence” booster in the line-up.
June 24th, 2011 at 5:54 pm
very true mvalfan. sad but true. any summer HAAL info? PLEASE
June 24th, 2011 at 6:26 pm
I went to the Freedom and Foothill pass league scrimage.. and both teams looked good.. both offenses can score.. each team needs to work on defense
June 24th, 2011 at 7:30 pm
Krait- Thats amazing someone from pittsburg having the grades to go to cal or stanford. Usually NEVER see that or hear that around here. I hope he doesn’t pull a diante Jackson.. where he got accepted then left Oregon because he got bad grades in the first semester. Pittsburg needs to throw alot more though because college teams like seeing that. Like a spread offense, not i formation.
There are no current stats for the berkeley RB so i cant say he was good. I need info.
June 25th, 2011 at 12:41 am
Mvalfan and HAALc/o2000 i’m curious I keep reading these claims of kennedy of fremont getting all of these kids what’s the proof or are you two just throwing ;things out there on a new coach.washington barely had 25 players last year on varsity and less than that on jv how can they even field a team this year with 15 so called transfers to kennedy of fremont and even more what are the coaches doing at washington that all there players would want to leave and got to a perenial loser for the past 20 yhrs. HAALc/o2000 what proof are you presenting ? sounds to me like fluff!
June 25th, 2011 at 8:28 am
Malik Watson was also at USC’s camp two weeks ago and impressed as well. Tyler Mapp also had a great camp. He was going up against SC’s top corner recruit and was making alot of great catches. Look all of this sounds great but I want to see it on field. I am a huge Pirate supporter but i don’t like all of this hype. I wants my boys hungry and fearful of failure.
By the way kriat, that DV transfer is not tall. Maybe 5’7 or 5’8.
Pitt is participating in the DVC passing leagued today. Lots of good competition, such as DLS. An update would be great.
June 25th, 2011 at 11:38 am
Freedoms suppose to be there too
June 25th, 2011 at 6:24 pm
Shout out to Washington high school for winning the CCC passing League, for a supposed DOWN year in husky land we sure had a good showing today. We have tons of work to do but dont sleep on us one bit.
June 25th, 2011 at 6:50 pm
So guy’s what ya think about Kennedy of Richmond @cc today?
June 25th, 2011 at 7:06 pm
Malik Watson Slings it at Cal
Rob Calonge
BearTerritory.net
BERKELEY — There has been no indication that Zach Kline would ever reconsider his commitment to California. Kline has also been as active in recruiting other players to Cal as Golden Bears’ super recruiter, and defensive line coach, Tosh Lupoi.
Kline, Rivals’ second best quarterback of the 2012 recruiting class, played well at Cal’s Full Contact Camp on Saturday, but it was Pittsburgh High’s unrated Malik Watson who stole the show.
Watson showcased a rifle for an arm and a sniper’s precision on his throws during scrimmages in the second half of Saturday’s action. Watson wowed campers with a perfect-touch deep pass into the corner of the end zone, and consistently hit receivers in stride with a zip on the ball much like Kline’s.
Thus far, Watson has been overlooked in terms of offers, but if he continues to perform like he did Saturday, that won’t last long. As of Saturday, the only offer Watson had received is from FCS school Northern Arizona.
According to Watson, he’s been playing well recently. “I went to USC’s camp Sunday,” began the 6-foot-2, 210-pound Watson. “I did very well. I made it to the top six out of like 60-plus QB’s. I did very well there.”
“Then I went to San Jose State Wednesday,” continued the quarterback. “I did really good. They told me that they’re considering to offer me, so just keep waiting with them.”
“And I went to Nevada yesterday, and they said they really like me. I’m going to San Diego State next Tuesday, and I’m here now.”
Why come to Cal when they’ve already recruited their guy for 2012? “My coach just wanted me to come here. If Zach goes somewhere else, then I’ll probably have a good chance here or something.”
Watson has no delusions of Cal choosing him over Kline, but he did admit Saturday that the school would move up to one of his top schools on his list if they were looking for a second quarterback in their 2012 class.
Unfortunately for Watson, Cal has already informed him that one quarterback is all they are looking for this year.
“Cal is definitely in the top five, but it’s just, if they were taking two quarterbacks, then they would definitely be one of my favorites,” Watson told BearTerritory about his feelings towards being a Golden Bear. “Yeah, I like it out here.”
For now, Oregon State is Watson’s number one hope, followed by the Trojans. His third choice? “It was Washington, but they got their guy,” he began. “It was Arizona, but they got their guy too, so I’d say Oregon State…let’s see…actually, I’m not sure. I just really like Oregon State right now.”
If he can play consistently like he did on Saturday, they’d love him in Corvallis.
Even while looking at his other options, Watson isn’t giving up on the Golden Bears.
“I’m out here working for [Cal's coaching staff]. See, my coach said to come out here and make them reconsider, so that’s what I’m trying to do.
“I like [the camp]. It’s really cool. It’s really fun. We’re just out here, just having fun. Me and Zach [Kline], we’ve always been close. We started being close at the Passing Down Tournament and we saw each other at the Elite 11, Stanford NIKE Camp, now we see each other here. So we’ve always been cool.”
June 25th, 2011 at 11:00 pm
No Pitt at the DVC passing tournament today. Clayton Valley, Heritage, Pinole Valley, Mt. Diablo, DLS, College Park. We heard that Justin Siena cancelled at last minute. Wish Pitt was there.
June 25th, 2011 at 11:14 pm
heard they have good players and made it to the championship but also heard kennedy of fremont to them to the wire. look out d3 kennedy looks like they are for real. still wish they could have played washington @ ccc. i heard washington took it but they had to squeek by every game. if kennedy can get all of their the recruits to mesh by the time the season starts watch out! looks like they will have some fire power
June 26th, 2011 at 10:26 am
Kennedy Richmond is for real as they were last year. Look for JFK to win at least 7 games in 2011.
Cash that check at the bank now, their toughest games will be against Miramonte, Moreau, Encinal and Salesain and Saint Patrick.
They will win at least two of those games and blow away everybody else on their schedule.
Upsets will be for them to beat St. Patricks and Salesian.
June 26th, 2011 at 10:40 am
killerd same offensive scheme as last season? if they can’t stop st.pats veer it will be a shootout but they wont win or have they changed d coordinators?
June 26th, 2011 at 11:08 am
How did College Park look?
June 26th, 2011 at 11:38 am
I dont know about JFK’s schemes but with that much talent running around on that team, often times massive talent trumps schemes, playmakers win games many times.
And Kennedy has playmakers all over the place.
June 26th, 2011 at 11:57 am
Reading these blogs it seems that some are talking about JFK Fremont others are talking about JFK Richmond. Which is which?
June 26th, 2011 at 1:43 pm
JFK is a purple and gold team… JFK richmond is a red and white team.
Alot of people think JFK will do good this year. But its hard to say this early
June 26th, 2011 at 3:00 pm
KillerD,
Kennedy-Richmond wins at least 7 games in 2011? I will take that bet right now sir! Best the Eagles do is 5-5, and even that is riding on a lot of transfer(s) paperwork getting approved…
Still, the Eagles have come a long ways in two years.
Wasn’t long ago they had to forfeit the bulk of their games due to eligibility and depth issues.
June 26th, 2011 at 3:27 pm
I dare say Mr. NCScoop (i am assuming Mr.) that now that each of us has ventured to the edge of the limb and we have also made our beds, now all that awaits us is JFK Richmond’s fate, be it at least 7 wins, as I predict or at best 5 wins, so say you.
Bon Apetit my friend and good luck
June 26th, 2011 at 4:57 pm
Are you basing Kennedy being good on how they did in a Passing Tourney?
June 26th, 2011 at 6:25 pm
@EBALFAN@2,
How did Heritage look? I know they graduated some very good players.
June 26th, 2011 at 7:42 pm
Based on what I saw Saturday- Heritage is not going to be much of a threat to throw the ball. They look pretty well coached tho.
June 26th, 2011 at 8:14 pm
you really can’t put anything on passing leagues. i remember last year antioch did really well in some of them, and we all know what kind of season they had last year. there’s no threat of the pass rush, and contact is minimal. nothing matters until the pads comes on. that’s the real test. i can say mt.d was looking alright yesterday also. what does that mean? nothing.
June 26th, 2011 at 8:34 pm
@218 BVAL expert can answer that one.
June 26th, 2011 at 9:57 pm
Heritage is projected to be not as good as last year.
@HSfootball- Thank you for stating the obvious hahaha We all know passing leagues dont mean anything win or lose. But they are important as a teaching perspective. Its good to get alot of scrimmage games in before the season starts so your team is ready.. However there might not be contact on the QB but a good passing league tournament will have a time limit that is reasonable. GOOD teams take advantage of passing league opportunities. and it does tell you how good your pass offense and pass defense is, definatley reflects on the outcome of the season, so that right there is 1/4 of the test. So it is important your team can take advantage of it.
June 26th, 2011 at 10:23 pm
bval expert – so what was the outcome for antioch who did well at passing leagues last year? passing league is like playing football in the streets.
kriart – on the pitt qb, he was not at the stanford camp. the pitt qb must be that good to get high marks w/out being there. at cal it was klein who had the highest marks. as i remember they had klein throwing most of the time, and the pitt qb was in a few times.
June 26th, 2011 at 10:29 pm
all these predictions are interesting. i remember last year how all the preidictions that pitt was gonna be the team to beat on the bval league. we shall see. can’t wait for the season to start. i’d like to see how kennedy fremont does with their new coaching and players do?
June 26th, 2011 at 11:43 pm
passing league let you know what teams have athletes to look for and who has done there work in the off season and the spring.
June 27th, 2011 at 8:36 am
Hsfootball — my source was wrong then if Malik wasn’t at Stanford. Klein who? what team is he and how tough is their preseason sched??? Of course, we’ll see how good they are when the games are played. Well the camps are just early predictors of how good the team will eventually be. Is Klein’s team playing Pitt at preseason, I’d love to see that. If they’re really good then they should eventually meet at NCS playoffs.
June 27th, 2011 at 8:58 am
Kriat,
As far as I know Watson was the Cal camp, the USC camp, and San Diego St’s camp. Klein is the San Ramon QB who committed to Cal last year. I think he is the only 4 star QB in Northern Cal (someone might want to check that out).
Passing league gives the QB reps at reading coverage. Useful, but it is a tool of practice.
@Hsfootball,
The Pitt coaching staff and those close to the program knew they were going to struggle last year. The four team scrimmage with DLS, Cal, and Jame Logan before the 2010 season confirmed that. I know that Pitt will be an improved team but there are so many intangibles that impact a high school football team that are not measurable. A good example is Cal high. At that scrimmage they looked good but I thought DLS looked the best( surprise!), then James Logan then Cal. They turned out to be a decent team (understatement). I am actually not a fan of the many passing leagues and camps with pads that occur throughout the summer. Too many opportunities for injuries.
my $.02′s
June 27th, 2011 at 9:24 am
pitt grunt – right on the money on passing leagues and padded camps. i do agree pitt should be a better team this year than last. also, i heard rumors that dela is challenging mister playing for pitt. again, these are just rumors…
June 27th, 2011 at 10:00 am
Early prediction for top 5 teams in the NCS for upcoming season:
1. DLS (duh)
2. Cal (big lines, deep team, enough athletes, good coaching = wins)
3. Pitt (maturing and lots of talent)
4. James Logan (very young last year, everyone back.. two of top runningbacks in area in Long and Beasley)
5. Berkeley (best RB in area, big lines)
June 27th, 2011 at 10:09 am
Don’t know about Pitt but B-High & Logan won’t be in the top 5. CAl won’t be 2nd might not be in the top 5. They lost a lot last year.
June 27th, 2011 at 10:09 am
Hsfootball,
That’s interesting but not surprising if the reasons for Cotton leaving the DLS program are true. Coincidentally, DLS one weakness is RB. What’s even more interesting is close relationship between Pitt and DLS. Galli and Edison are close buddies, as is Pitt’s D coordinator Shipe and Aliotti. This should be fun the watch……
If DLS does contest the transfer which results in Cotton not playing his senior year, that would be a shame. Don’t punish the kid.
June 27th, 2011 at 11:07 am
Pitt,
I agree with your last statement and hope that MMC gets a 2nd chance to play. (The exception would be not meeting the academic requirements, hence the term Student/athlete right?)
June 27th, 2011 at 11:49 am
InTheKnow, I don’t know about Logan or Berkeley next year. Pitt has to prove that last year was just a down year. Berkeley graduated some key players last year and Logan has been a seesaw lately, don’t really know how good they can possibly be if Arroyo almost grabbed a W against them. CAL and DLS will both be solid. Cal lost some important players but they’re good because of line play.
June 27th, 2011 at 11:51 am

1. DLS
2. Cal
3. Pinole Valley
4. Monte Vista
5. Pitt or Encinal
June 27th, 2011 at 11:52 am
OAL fans, who does Fremont have on there non-league schedule this year?
June 27th, 2011 at 12:06 pm
ManDown,
I would probably throw SRV in the 4th slot in lieu of MV. I am hearing that they could be very solid this year. Prep fan or Chs can probably add more insight into that. Can’t overlook the fact that Kline is considered one of the top 100 QB’s in the nation, otherwise, I agree with your list.
June 27th, 2011 at 12:20 pm
Okay, I didn’t really know much about SRV going into this year because from my understanding they were losing most players on that defense and MV still has there QB and a stud WR. Thanks for the heads up. Pinole Valley could win it all this year if they can establish some type of passing game so watch out for them. They’re loaded with talent and will win the ACCAL this year.
June 27th, 2011 at 12:49 pm
S1lverngreen,
I would hope that Galli has copies of his DLS transcripts. If he is below 2.0 then hopefully summer school can remedy that. If his gpa so far below 2.0 that summer will do no good, than that is on Cotton.
However, if there is something deeper here that prevents Cotton from playing his senior year other than grades/gpa, than I don’t want to know.
June 27th, 2011 at 2:10 pm
Did anyone notice that Deer Valley scheduled the team Folsom that was in the CIF game last year? Really surprised no one caught onto that or is talking about that. I wonder what rich woods was thinking at the time? maybe he is hoping for a win? What you guys think
June 27th, 2011 at 2:16 pm
Mandown- Fremont plays dublin, clayton valley, liberty, miramonte and galileo of san fransisco
June 27th, 2011 at 5:28 pm
That doesn’t sound like a lightweight schedule at all.
June 27th, 2011 at 6:27 pm
I could see Pinole & Monte Vista in the Top 5. Cardinal Newman is loaded this year. They return QB & RB last year. All their best players last year were 10th & 11th graders they might be D-III state team.
June 27th, 2011 at 7:23 pm
@Perkin- we wont know to the season starts up. And what the newspaper says
June 27th, 2011 at 7:31 pm
Joe- fremonts schedule? uhmm its an ok schdule Dublins usually not very good but they show improvements here and there. Clayton Valley is a average team. Liberty is an ok team still having trouble winning each year. Miramonte can be very tough every other year. Galileo is a decent team as well
June 27th, 2011 at 7:57 pm
That’s a fair outlook, I only gave it a quick glance over before looking, probably overstated it.
Clayton Valley had a very solid D from what I recall. I’ve been living in another state for a bit and my sense for non-league schedule got a bit skewed as a result.
June 27th, 2011 at 9:13 pm
Perkin,
I am picking JFK Richmond to do well this year based on their turnaround last year, their deep talent and hardnosed style.
They will win at least 7 games this year and Kennedy is not flying underneath anybody’s radar in 2011
June 27th, 2011 at 11:14 pm
SRV returns 4 players on the Times’ Cream of the Crop watch list for 2012. In addition to Kline, they bring back WR Sean Miller 6’4″, 205, C Matt Fisher 6’4″, 215, and 2-way lineman Jake Simonich 6’5″, 235.
Monte Vista has Lockie & Bruce. DLS has Barton, Houston, Teo & WR Anthony Williams 6’0″, 183. The 3 teams that Cal High has been chided for scheduling in the preseason this season each has a player on the list: Washington – lineman Haniteli Lousi, 6’4″, 260, CP – lineman Oshrey Elor, 6’4″, 350, and CV – lineman Anthony Vivieros, 6’1″, 250.
Cal High has no one that was deemed worthy of inclusion on the 77 player list, but they will get to test their mettle against each of those studs.
June 27th, 2011 at 11:21 pm
Joe- From what i recall Clayton Valley played 7 games that they gave 20 plus points.. Does that sound like a good defense? A reasonable person might think not, and a fan would probably say yes. But 7 out of 12 games giving up 20 plus points? Thats basically giving up three touchdowns in seven game.. thats more then half.. Going to have to disagree on the defense part.. But they are an average team when you look at them in the NCS as a whole.
Cant tell if JFK richmond will be good. They dont have any stats up to look at
June 28th, 2011 at 12:37 am
That Cream of the Crop watch list for 2012 means nothing. That is just a list of names that each coach gives the newspaper for the following season. Because a player makes that list doesn’t mean that they’re any good.
KillerD, you are wrong about JFK-Richmond. What is hard nosed about them and what good is all that talent without a good scheme? JFK will lose league games to Encinal, SPSV, St. Marys, & Moreau. Last year they lost to Swett and Hercules I don’t know how good Swett will be this year but no decent team should ever lose to a team that is that bad. JFK will lose at least 4 league games next year and thats not counting non league. 5-5 at best for JFK-Richmond.
June 28th, 2011 at 2:27 am
Man Down- I agree and your right.. there is not much talent as there was two years ago. Cream of the crop means nothing now. That is why is see more de la salle players getting scholarships. Couple of years ago, you never saw any lineman from De La Salle go to college because of their size. Now, since there is slim to none talent, you are now seeing more ppl from de la salle play in college. Its something that can be easily proven.
I agree whats so great about JFK kennedy of richmond? How in heck will they beat a “Powerful, speedy, Smart” Encinal and SPSV team. Folks we still got couple of months left to go. Its still to early to say they will be good. I wouldnt want to eat up of these words. I totally agree with Man Down.
June 28th, 2011 at 8:15 am
Men, I gave you my reasons and predictions on JFK Richmond, only thing to do is watch them win at least 7 games or not in 2011
June 28th, 2011 at 8:49 am
“there is slim to none talent” that is about as cynic view i have ever seen on here. if there is no talent in the east bay anymore why do you even bother to write stuff on the board…is it SOCAL up here, well no..but all that talent in SOCAL couldn’t get it done at State…
last years Cal high is the model of what norcal football is about. a great team w/ no individuals, no D-1 talent, no premadonna’s…and they dominated everyone in the east bay outside of the DLS. and if you are going to say well they didn’t play this team or that team, they would have whipped them too.
will that be the case this year, maybe not they had a special season. i would make a counter argument to the “cream of the crop”…your right it means NOTHING, because all that talent does not guarantee you wins. You must all agree to that bc your argument JFK ricmond won’t win a lot of games. i have seen JFK richmond play this offseason and no team has more talent at the skilled positions than they do (outside maybe pitt)…that includes DLS, encinal, SRV, etc etc…
so in conclusion…win based on team football, w/ no individuals. Put the team first and the scholarships and all else will follow if they are deserved. put yor scholarship first you will lose and that offer at the end of the table may not be there as you thought. this is what DLS has been able to preach for so many years. so yes cream of the crop means nothing if you are concerned with winning teams, not individuals.
June 28th, 2011 at 8:57 am
BVAL-I don’t want this to be a thing, because I don’t truly don’t care about CV. Just caught a few of their games and thought if they got to the second round of the D-2 playoffs with that O, the D must be doing something right. They ranked second in their league in points per game allowed, and the number seems like it would be competitive in some other league. I don’t know how the 20 point mantra really works as a gauge. Looking around it seems a lot of teams are around six. Maybe that last one makes an impact, but their PPG looked pretty solid (would rank 2nd in BVAL).
Now you’ve gone and distracted me, letting my argumentativeness pull me in here.
On JFK Richmond, NEED to shore up that D. Last year they had some nice playmakers on offense, but 34 ppg allowed won’t cut it. Shore that up and they could be in solid shape. The passing game could also develop, as they threw for the least yards in the BSAL (even behind John Swett). Losing Mulder could hurt, but the D should be the real question mark. Seven wins? I’d have to see their actual schedule, but I see two league losses easy.
June 28th, 2011 at 9:14 am
Norcalfball: WHO said anything about JFK and scholarships????? What are you talking about?
And, just because a team has a Kid or Kids that are scholarship worthy at Any level does not mean in any way shape or form that that team is Not a Team or less of a team.
Good Lord your rant was ridiculous, not you, but your Rant.
JFK Richmond is very, very, veeeeeeerrrrrrry talented, and they are Tough and hardworking and solid.
Those are the reasons they will win at least 7 games vs a very tough schedule for their level
June 28th, 2011 at 9:23 am
In no way I’m saying that there’s no talent in the Bay Area. I fill there is a bunch of talent and most of it get over looked by some of the colleges that come out to recruit. Yea there wont be as many 5 or 4 star recruits out here compared to SoCal, do you know how big that area is? The Bay has talent fellas and ManDown never said that we don’t.
JFK-Richmond lost to any good team they played last year except EC and they went 5-5. Im not impressed with there scheme on offense and they don’t seem very aggressive on defense so I don’t see how they’re hard nosed and expect to win 7+ games. They’re not like an OAL team. You know what you’re going to get when you play the OAL, Hard Hitting and Aggressive Play.
June 28th, 2011 at 9:40 am
read my post again, before you make ridiculous comments…nowhere did i say you couldn’t…encinal, pitt, etc have been able to win a lot of games with d-1 players…my point was all the d-1 talent that everyone says makes a great team, it doesn’t…
every year i hear..this team has 6 d-1 players and that teams has X kids already with offers, therefore they would beat this team and that team because they have none of those players.
which is why cream of the crop means nothing in terms of overall teams. so you can’t compare cream of crop to who is going to be good on a team basis…otherwise whoever had the most cream of the crop would be the best teams, right? that was my rant as you called it.
also NOWHERE in my post did i say anything about JFK and scholarships??? so what are you talking about? i just said they had a lot of talent at the skilled positions.
and for the record i agree with you based on what i saw they should win 7 games…there schedule isn’t that tough. other than probably encinal every other game is a winnable game. so i would say 7 is about right.
read and interpret my posts before responding…would help in the future…the only argument i was making was that cream of the crop means nothing in terms of what teams are going to be the best…
oh and the comment of there being little or no talent in the east bay…had to take a shot there…
June 28th, 2011 at 9:47 am
mandown…and i agree with the agressive part..that might be a problem…you seem to know more about them than i do..was just pointing out the athletes that they have are ridiculous and will probably trump the oakland schools this year…haven’t seen MAC this year, so not sure about them though.
but yes all that talent is not going to guarantee wins…but do think 7 is reasonable…you are right didn’t win a lot of games against good teams in the past, but i dont think they had the same team last year as well. we will find out in the fall.
and it was BVAL expert who said there was no talent, not you mandown
June 28th, 2011 at 10:00 am
JFK-Richmond has talent and athletes all over the place but I just don’t see them as a stacked OAL team. JFK probably does look great during passing tournaments and camps because most teams are unorganized at this time of the year and just putting in there scheme. You can always look great during 7 on 7 when you have talented players. Maybe they prove me wrong but I just don’t see 7 wins for them. Most the schools out the Richmond way aren’t built on toughness for some odd reason except PV, you don’t prepare yourself for a hard hitting physical game when you play those teams. Just athletes and speed is what they have.
June 28th, 2011 at 11:01 am
Let me respond to several posters…
@Prep Fan, Cream of the Crop means nothing because we’re talking high school production in 2011 not college potential 2012+.
@KillerD, the JFK-Richmond vs. Salesian game in september is starting to sound good. Both teams should be LOADED at the skill positions…shootout?
@Pitt, I agree summer camps and passing leagues are too much of an injury risk for 15yo/16yo kids. They’re still growing and we already put them through the grinder from mid August until mid December.
@Mandown/BVAL/Joe, I’m picking Fremont to win the OAL this year. Their coaching is consistent and solid, Mack is reloading/recruiting and Fremont was winning the Clayton Valley game last year but fell apart late. CV beat Windsor, and barely lost to College Park and Northgate too. Fremont gets a rematch and their schedule isn’t soft with Miramonte and Dublin with a new head coach.
@Perkin, Cardinal Newman is hard to figure out. Their early season losses last year vs Palma & Valley Christian looked way different than the playoff run against O’Dowd, Miramonte, & Encinal
June 28th, 2011 at 11:34 am
CN was young early in the season. THey hit their stride & all their best players are coming back. I see them going 9-1 or 10-0 in the regular season, win their league, & be the number 1 D-III seed.
June 28th, 2011 at 11:36 am
Early Football Predictions
1. DLS (obviously)
2. SRV (Mitty/Folsom out of the gate…wow)
3. Pitt (transfers)
4. Pinole (deep talent, down Berkeley)
5. Encinal (history)
Sleeper: Logan (RB-miles long)
June 28th, 2011 at 11:56 am
@ oh boy i dont agree, but you can make an argument for SRV, pitt to be 2 and 3 and maybe for pinole but it is a stretch. however encinal is a small school. they could never play with a cal high or monte vista, ever! way out of there leauge. and it would take a great game form encinal and a bad game from any foothill, or logan school before they could even compete. so i just dont see how they could be at 5 with all the D1 schools. D2 or D3 yes they top the list but D1 is on a different level
June 28th, 2011 at 12:17 pm
Mvalfan, You think Encinal would lose to Logan? They can’t compete against Foothill or MV without them having a bad game?
June 28th, 2011 at 12:23 pm
yes thats what i am saying. just let me know the last decent D1 school encinal played and beat or didnt lose by more than 2 TDs for that matter. the size of D1 teams is too much for them to play a whole game against let alone a full season
June 28th, 2011 at 12:26 pm
@ mandown dont forget cal high too
June 28th, 2011 at 12:30 pm
I don’t think Encinal could hang Cal, DLS, maybe MV but I would give them a fair chance against other teams in that league. I think Encinal could handle Logan for sure.
June 28th, 2011 at 12:32 pm
The only reason Encinal will lose to a bigger squad is if they ran the ball down there throats and played very very good defense which the three teams I mentioned do. I don’t think Encinal has played any other D1 team besides Serra in recent years and thats what they did.
June 28th, 2011 at 12:45 pm
well serra only beat MV 28-21 a little different than your 42-13 so i dont see how they would have a fair chance. and what about your loss to Cardinal Newman 35-7 and Cardinal Newman lost bad to all the D1 teams they played. and your right the match up would make a difference, encinal might do better against a throwing team, but logan doesnt throw, so yes logan would run them too thanks for proving my point on logan. im not taking anything away from encinal they would run down most D2 schools but, D1 is on a different level.
June 28th, 2011 at 2:22 pm
NorCalfball: thanks for laser clarity, we are good and sorry for any erroneous laments on my part
June 28th, 2011 at 2:39 pm
NorCal- I could give you alot of examples of why that it is true… We are not talking about how teams do against other teams that doesnt make any sense what so ever, I dont know where your coming from with that.
But that statement “slim to none talent” was just a exaggeration of what i mean comparing how talent over the year has totally dropped. There used to a good 15 teams in the 2009 season that had outstanding players across the board. last year there was only like 5 or 7 teams that were totally stacked on each side of the ball.
Looking at positions..
Now a days we dont have ANY tall receivers in the NCS anymore. We dont have a Diante Jackson(Las Lomas) or Roman Runner (Freedom), Forest Hightower (Concord), or James King (Mirmonte) and now we just lost Lucas Shapiro (De La Salle). Now we have receivers that are 5-8 or 5-9.
Same with line man we rarley have lineman that are 250+ ponuds anymore. The size has decreased dramatically over the years.
Oh boy- History does not predict the future. Thats like saying mount diablo will do good next season because they have alot of history and they’ve been here for along time. You might want to check up on putting enicinal on that list or use a different reason. Your basically saying history will guarantee encinal a league championship putting them on that list. Once a player has played his last game with that team, he is no longer apart of that team anymore if its that players senior year. History has abousltely NOTHING to do with how well a team will do next year or next season, because you have players entering and leaving your program every year.
We have witnessed teams like Campolindo, and Amador Valley. Who have really been good one season and all the sudden they lose majority of their games the next year because of changes they have to make [[WE HAVE SEEN THAT BEFORE]] . But all your other reasons for different schools are fine, and i agree with. I just see encinal being one of those teams that wont have it this year. I heard they didnt win the passing league at Laney College. If they would of won that, then you could this of a reason your statement is true.
June 28th, 2011 at 4:41 pm
we are good killerd…no problem nothing personal on here…u make a lot of good points…
i agree to a point w you bval expert…but most public schools in the east bay are going to have the highs and lows…our schools are much smaller in size compared to say socal…they have a lot of schools that are really big, we have a few…plus there is no doubt demographics has changed dramatically in the east bay and no sport is affected more by it then football…
so there is no doubt there will be highs and lows…yes 2009 was a very good year for talent, but can’t say there is nothing just a year later it goes in cycles..now if we stay like this for a few more years then it is more of an argument…
btw i am not an encinal supporter was just making an example…and i dont think winning the laney passing tournament would have anything to do with their success this year…they are not a throwing team…plus throw in the fact washington of fremont was ripped apart on here for their performance at laney, then they go out and win the contra costa tournament from one someone said on here…tough to judge passing tournaments on anything more than talent and passing ability, let alone 1 passing tournament in early june…just saying
June 28th, 2011 at 5:40 pm
Mvalfan, I totally disagree with out on that point. Logan got smashed by Berkeley in the “D1 playoffs” and Berkeley was beaten by Marin Catholic who lost to Encinal. You are pumping Logan too hard buddy. This is the same team who let Arroyo come close to gaining a W against them. I don’t view Logan as a very good team. Not every team in D1 is that good. The top tier teams, yes. Teams like SL, Berkeley and Logan, no.
Like I said the only way Encinal doesn’t come close to a victory against D1 teams is if they’re a very good team and they’re a running team. I’m not saying that they will win.
June 28th, 2011 at 5:44 pm
Thanks norcal
June 28th, 2011 at 5:46 pm
nothing personal.. I agree as well
June 28th, 2011 at 6:37 pm
I wasn’t saying that having Cream of the Crop candidates means anything. I was responding to a post about whether SRV would be better than MV this year, and just threw that out showing that they have some athletes that at least someone feels are talentd enough to be put on that list. That doesn’t mean they will beat MV or anyone else this year, as the games are played on the field by 11 players at a time and not just by a couple of star players. If that were the case, then Granada with the A twins would have done much better than 3-4 in the EBAL last year.
June 28th, 2011 at 7:23 pm
That would be highly amusing if a private attempts to derail a legit transer to a public. Goes against the grain of the typical prepblog lament. There are legit reasons regarding academics that ALL principals have to document when there are transfers. Privates self “police” initial admissions, so let NCS and the docs pass judgement.
Agree with other posters with some D1′s having good runs recently having far less to do with superstars- even those with D1 Jr verbals are not automatically gifted W’s- than with hard working, athletic, deep squads. Three highly touted recruits in the EBAL proved the theory in ’10. It’s way too early to chisel the NCS list. Super stealth mode by some.
June 28th, 2011 at 7:40 pm
it is way to early to predict anything at this time. I’m pretty sure there will be teams that will step up to the plate and may surprise a lot. It is a game of 11 players not 1 or 2.
June 29th, 2011 at 6:39 am
Heard theres a passing league today at chabot 5pm not sure what schools. Anybody else heard/know if this is true and what teams?
June 29th, 2011 at 9:05 am
any word on the st. mary’s camp? i believe cal, freedom, clayton, garces hs, moreau, northgate, and tracy is there.
June 29th, 2011 at 10:47 am
Everyone is jumping on the encinal pick so I take it back! I have no personal connection to the school. I just think that 3 straight NCS title games is impressive. And from a former ebal player, D1 is top heavy like the other divisions so I don’t buy the argument a small school can’t hang in a 1 game scenario.
June 29th, 2011 at 10:56 am
Hs Football- today is last day for camp for those group of schools.. I was going to see it but other stuff came in my way..
OH boy- ok just remember history has nothing to do with this year.. same goes for college. But its ok its still early. But who knows they might end up being good.
I understand your argument “small schools cant hang with D1 schools” i agree as well with this that it is not true .. small schools can hang with the D1 big boys. But we wont know until Encinal Schedules a D1 school yet.. So we will figure that out in the up coming future.
June 29th, 2011 at 7:56 pm
BVAL Expert. How do you see the BVAL going this year? Can we get a breakdown from you and how they’ll rank? I am interested in what you think will happen
June 29th, 2011 at 7:58 pm
What’s going on down at Berkeley High? I hear they’re not looking too good this year in losing passing league games to weak teams.
June 29th, 2011 at 9:12 pm
#280 i agree encinal might be able to hang with one mid D1 team like SL, Berkeley and Logan. they have upset ability might even be able to pick off a better D1 team but thats one game and either way it would be an upset if encinal won.
mandown- i just dont see encinal winning more then 2 maybe 3 games in leauge if they played in the EBAL so how can they be ranked higher than all of them thats all i am saying. its just hard to say they are in the top 7 in the east bay. and im not saying that logan is great but they are big and have numbers and can wear down a team and i dont know why they get smashed in playoffs every year its like they beat washington for mval title and are happy with that. then take a dump in the playoffs
June 29th, 2011 at 9:32 pm
um D3 is better then d2.. And as for d1.. If you take out DE la salle * which no d1 team has beaten for almost 21 years.. D3 and D1 are almost the same, the best five from d1 (except the KINGS) vs the BEst 5 from D3.. in a ONE game scenario now that would be Great .. so this rumor of being D1 does not make you automatically better then the d2 teams and D3 ..
June 29th, 2011 at 9:43 pm
I don’t think the jets could hang in the EBAL but on a one game basis they have upset ability. I do agree with you on that. But I do think teams like Berkeley, SL, and Logan are different types of D1 teams. I personally think Encinal could beat all three teams in a three game stretch. Not saying they will but those teams don’t impress me for the kind of players they get and the size of the schools. All three of those teams have been underachievers as of the past few years.
June 29th, 2011 at 11:55 pm
mandown- i agree with everthing except that they could beat D1 teams. if they went 1-2 against those teams i would be amazed, but we will have to agree to disagree tell they start to schedule D1 teams. i mean beat a top D2 school pinole, concord, washington, or a top redwood empire team then we can talk about playing with D1 teams. tell then we just have our opinions.
June 30th, 2011 at 8:27 am
which is why i think it is silly to even try and compare encinal as a top 10 east bay team…they have never beaten a good d1 school. while i agree they could be some of them in a one game deal, they haven’t. the only thing they can hang their hat on is battle losses to serra, but still losses.
with the way everything is set up now, really should be seperate rankings for each division, because it is the only thing that is easier to compare. unless you are a team that coninously plays up a division.
June 30th, 2011 at 8:48 am
completely agree with having separate rankings for diff divisions. it doesn’t make sense how d2 and d3 teams get ranked over a decent d1 team just because they are ranked in their division. i can see them ranking over decent d1 teams if and when they have wins or close games against d1 teams. until then, not in the same league or rankings.
June 30th, 2011 at 8:59 am
ManDown,
I want to counter your argument that Logan is an underachiever due to its size. A common misperception. Logan is large, no doubt about it, however, over the past decade the population has changed drastically…. nearly 70 percent of the school is now asian, filipino, middle eastern or mexican. Not exactly a strong base for a football program. Yes, they get a fair amount of skill players; however their line typically looks like an average JV line in the EBAL, and we should be able to agree that the trenches are where games are won and lost (see Cal High). I honestly believe that Logan pulls from a smaller potential football population then every single school in the EBAL.
This year they are on the upswing. I believe you mentioned they barely beat Arroyo which is true… however this was with 2 soph runningbacks and 2 soph qbs splitting time. All are back. They shut out San Leandro, defeated Washington and demolished Newark last year. Berkeley handled them in pouring, freezing rain, an embarrassing loss they are eager to avenge. Bring on the EBAL… Foothill week 2 I believe.
June 30th, 2011 at 9:05 am
I see where you guys are coming from but I guess we will have to agree to disagree.
June 30th, 2011 at 9:21 am
encinal is gon be trash this year. they lost all they players last year and everybody comin back aint got grades to play. they gon get blow out by serra by 50 points and the big game wil be alot differnt this year. over rated and they qb is hela weak and fat. no jon brown or tyrone type qb for them this year.
June 30th, 2011 at 9:52 am
Encinal faces only 3 teams this year that had a winning record in 2010, and they have a month to prepare for each one. Not only do they not face any D1 teams except Serra, their league schedule doesn’t have any D2 teams. Quite different from the schedules most D1 teams face. Livermore might well be .500 with that schedule. Encinal is a very good team almost every year and might be able to gear up for a 1 game matchup with a D1 team, but to compare them to upper tier D1 teams is not being realistic.
June 30th, 2011 at 9:53 am

prep fan – thank you. my point excatly…
June 30th, 2011 at 10:41 am
Then you should get a reduced or subtracted ranking if Encinal calls you for a pre-season game and you duck them especially and or only if you have an opening in your schedule: so yes I’m talking to you Foothill, Cardinal Newman, San Ramon Valley, Washington and Logan all contacted all ducked EHS. Let’s talk facts… Fact is Encinal’s 1000 students 25 man roster is intimidating. And a loss would crucify their (d1 and d2 schools) rankings. And obviously these “D1 and D2 schools” have cowards for coaches. Walsh is no coward.
June 30th, 2011 at 12:28 pm
#296
Pre-season schedules for the teams listed in the post:
Encinal – Hayward, Serra, Alameda
Foothill – Pittsburg, Novato, Logan
Cardinal Newman – Concord, Alhambra, Valley Christian, Palma
SRV – Folsom, Mitty, Washington
Washington – California, Deer Valley, San Ramon, Amador
Logan – Arroyo, San Leandro, Foothill, Heritage
From the looks of those pre-season schedules, I would not say they are ducking Encinal. Regardless of the opponent, a D1 has more to lose/not as much to gain playing a D3 than the D3 does. It’s better to play a D1 with a 30-pt. rating than a D3 team with a 30-pt rating.
Cardinal Newman, also a D3, does not seem to have problems forming a competitive pre-season schedule.
I would think that with Encinal’s schedule there should be every expectation to be 10-0 with some very gaudy stats.
June 30th, 2011 at 12:36 pm
Bad examples. These teams do not look like cowards.
Washington is playing 4 D1 schools: Cal, SRV, Amador and Deer Valley in the preseason. For a D2 school, that is hardly being a coward.
SRV has defending state champ Folsom on their schedule, plus Mitty and Washington.
CN is playing defending NCS D2 champ Concord, plus perennial powers Palma and Valley Christian from the CCS.
Foothill is in the same league as DLS, Cal, MV & SRV, so they will be tested big time in league play, plus they have Pitt, Novato and Logan.
Logan is playing SL, Foothill & Heritage.
June 30th, 2011 at 12:46 pm
reggie why would washington play encinal when they play cal, dear valley, AV, and SRV. why give up one of those games to play a D3 school. im sure all of the other team are simalar. dont see how that makes them cowards. they will get a better frosh, jv and var game with better crowds at every other game. if encinal keeps pushing they will get games. if washington can get 3 D1 schools to play them at D2 then encinal will too at some point.
#294 logans best player is filipino so you cant say they water the talent down. not to mention all the polys they have and they pull oakland and hayward kids down on bart too. they are underachievers they have what like 5000 kids there. washington has same demographics and under 2000 kids but they do well in playoffs. they have won at least their first round games 3 of the past 4 years, and both years in D1 they lost to the runner up, cal then pitt. logan is in love with owning the MVAL they go foot to foot and run the ball every play tell a team puts 10 in the box then they will pass. that will win them MVAL but if they never try anything else they cant make a run in playoffs.
June 30th, 2011 at 1:29 pm
The question I have for the Encinal supporters who say that the bigger teams are ducking the Jets…would the Jets be likely to play a D5 team who called them for a non-league game or look for someone their own size or bigger?
June 30th, 2011 at 2:15 pm
ENCINAL looks like an oal school with a little better coaching sometimes ur talent gets u over the hump
if they had more discipline they would beat the crap out of a bunch of D1 schools on talent alone!!!
June 30th, 2011 at 2:44 pm
yeah reggie i would pick some new teams to pick on…bad examples…those teams dont appear to be ducking anyone…
mvalfan…good points on logan i agree. they seem to win MVAL every year yet can’t get it done in the playoffs..even the year washington was in d1 (two years ago) logan handled them…yet washington went on to be 1 game from getting the right to lose to DLS in championship and gave pitt a decent run that night as it was. logan went out early..
to me got to be able to run and pass in the playoffs especially in D1..too many good teams with size and speed you can’t get away with being able to do just one. to me that is the biggest thing that seperates the smaller schools with d1. many of them are real good at passing or real good at running, but poor in the other aspect. which is why game in game out they couldn’t compete at the d1 level…on one night yes, on every week no…that along with sheer size and depth another concern for a team like encinal to go through d1 teams…they would not be able to overcome the sure injuries they would see playing d1 teams on every given night, with their small numbers…
playing cardinal newman and playing cal high are two different things…not that cal high is lighyears better than them. but on saturday to monday morning you are going to be feeling it after playing cal high, don’t think you will have that same feeling after playing CN.
June 30th, 2011 at 5:15 pm
Man down- I will be coming up with a full analysis on the BVAL sometime later.. this off season.. dont worry.. it will be coming soon.. ill be ranking teams and have descriptions.. and everything provided for you….
June 30th, 2011 at 9:36 pm
Thanks BVAL Expert. I will be looking forward to hearing your opinion.
June 30th, 2011 at 9:40 pm
Will the jets even be able to beat Hayward this year? I don’t know because there star player Boe Banks aint playing anymore from the word around town. Also they have players on the team thats not eligible to play this year like Corie.
June 30th, 2011 at 9:42 pm
I mean Renegades10
June 30th, 2011 at 10:07 pm
Hayward? Well, rumor has it they have either named or hired (or both?) a new coach:
“Hayward High has named Justin Redemer has been hired as its new football coach”.
June 30th, 2011 at 10:50 pm
Watch out for JFK Richmond………seveeeeeennnn wins at least this year
June 30th, 2011 at 10:55 pm
haha alot of encinal haters.. This is Funy by no means am i a encinal fan, but this is to funny lol
June 30th, 2011 at 10:59 pm
last years encinal would of beat any team in the BVAL AND MVAL .. Just saying… to you two guys that are hating…
June 30th, 2011 at 11:41 pm
Then dont knock EHS they made the calls your “D1 schools” don’t want a game. So why you wanna hate the JETS so bad. Instead for CN without no instruction this season the other teams are headed for self destruction
July 1st, 2011 at 9:02 am
my only point is that you cant rank them ahead of the D1 teams tell they prove something. they lost 42-13 to the only D1 team they played then lost 35-7 to CN who played two D1 teams and lost 34-0 and 31-7.
you can have your opinion that you think they can hang with D1 teams but untill they prove it all you have is your opinion and i have facts.
reggie tell your coach to stop fishing for big fish and go for some top D2 schools first pinole, concord, arroyo or more top D3 school like miramonte, bishop o dowd, or marin catholic who you sqeeked by in playoffs. thats how you build up a schedule.
scoop, your crazy, first your #285 the top five D3 teams could not play with #2-6 D1 teams thats a joke. and second no way could encinal have won the bval leauge. maybe one bval team but give them pitt, heritage, DV, freedom in a row good luck. too many heavy hitters. put them in MVAL they might have had a chance last year with logan the only good D1 and washington, newark, and american at D2. but thats a much bigger line up than encinal has ever seen so its still speculation only
July 1st, 2011 at 9:23 am
Hey Reggie is what is being posted about Bo Banks not playing true?
What about the running back that tore up his knee vs CN is he going to make it back for the start of the season?
How many kids and who are not being able to play due to grades?
With only a 25 man roster even losing 5 players really hurts and knowing this makes a huge difference in how the Jets play this year.
I little truthful information are your part would sure help
July 1st, 2011 at 11:33 am
Any one have any insight into the Marin CO teams this year? Will Marin Catholic dominate that side of the bay?
July 1st, 2011 at 12:09 pm
@mval fan
What do you not get about Encinal (DIII) beating Marin Catholic (DIII and private so may as well be DI) who beat Berkeley who beat Logan? On that rationale alone, the powers that be (NCS and CIF) would give Encinal a higher seed in the playoffs. And the press would certainly rank them above at least those schools. Here’s one final top 20 for the entire NCS from 2010. Encinal is only below 5 of the 22 DI schools out there. And the smallest true “athlete pool” along with Miramonte on the list. All private schools should be DI in my oppinion if they have kids at their school that live more than 10 miles away.
1. (1) De La Salle (Concord) 14-0**
2. (2) California (San Ramon) 12-2
3. (3) Concord 13-1
4. (5) Rancho Cotate (Rohnert Park) 12-2
5. (10) Cardinal Newman (Santa Rosa) 11-3
6. (7) San Ramon Valley (Danville) 7-6
7. (8) Granada (Livermore) 8-5
8. (9) Monte Vista (Danville) 8-4
9. (11) Pinole Valley (Pinole) 11-1-1
10. (12) Casa Grande (Petaluma) 11-2
11. (4) Encinal (Alameda) 11-2*
12. (6) Marin Catholic (Kentfield) 12-1
13. (13) Heritage (Brentwood) 9-3
14. (14) Berkeley 8-4
15. (15) College Park (Pleasant Hill) 5-7
16. (16) Northgate (Walnut Creek) 9-2
17. (17) Bishop O’Dowd (Oakland) 9-2*
18. (18) Miramonte (Orinda) 11-2
19. (19) Foothill (Pleasanton) 6-5
20. (NR) Salesian (Richmond) 11-2
July 1st, 2011 at 1:43 pm
MVAL YOU SOUND STUPID mack handle that ass againest PITT * i am a strong support for them and I HOPE we put a team out this year.. WE beat salesians who beat st pats, in which Encinal handled .. so dont go there like i said ENcinal or MAck Or marin .. and maybe even bod WOulda won THE BVAL AND THE MVAL.. *speaking for small schools
July 1st, 2011 at 1:49 pm
EBfootball- its hard to compare teams that dont play head to head, you cant do the: they beat them, who beat them, who beat them, argument. it doesnt work in high school too many different playing styles IE SRV beat foothill; AV beat beat SRV; but then AV lost to foothill.
give me a head to head match up to prove something for encinal. just because they matched up well and beat marin catholic it doesnt mean they could beat berkeley too.
i do agree with everything else you are saying.
July 1st, 2011 at 2:02 pm
scoop you said –
“last years encinal would of beat any team in the BVAL AND MVAL .. Just saying… to you two guys that are hating…”
-sounds like your saying they could win the leauge title there
then you said
“D3 and D1 are almost the same” in #285
-i dont see how i am the one that sounds stupid.
look at my last post on comparing teams with no head to head, but if you think any of those small schools could go through a BVAL season your a little off. one game yes but string them all back to back and its hard to recover
July 1st, 2011 at 2:57 pm
@mval fan
It does work like that… that’s why the playoffs always seem to work out pretty close to the seedings. Also the writers who cover all these games usually get it about right. The coaches (good ones at least) who scout all the these games usually get it about right. And this is a big part of what being a sports fan is all about anyway.
July 1st, 2011 at 3:14 pm
Hmmmm, EBfootball obviously has no love for Pittsburg. I hope that he’ll be reasonable changes his mind if Pitt wins it over Foothill and Monte Vista as well as Berkeley. If Pitt loses then we’ll just take it as a learning session just like last year when Pitt was winless in preseason but won BVAL with straight wins. Pitt can’t be winless this time, though, as it plays a D3 team in Jefferson.
July 1st, 2011 at 3:44 pm
EBfootball look at my examples if it does work like that than AV would have beat foothill and they didnt. and playoff seading doesnt go off of head to head, they go off of who they think the best team is. washinton beat cal two years ago, had a better record but got the lower sead, then upset cal in playoffs. two more examples is pitt and monte vista lost to teams in playoffs that they beat earlyer that year
July 1st, 2011 at 3:44 pm
@kriart
That was an end of the 2010 season poll. Pitt needs to step their game up. Why can’t y’all win it all? You seem to have an endless amount of talent.
July 1st, 2011 at 7:57 pm
you do make a great point MVAL, But This is Highschool football, NOT the SEC VS THE WAC, MACK would of won league in that league so would marin catholic.
July 1st, 2011 at 10:29 pm
Don’t know bleacher. MVAL and BVAL huh. St. Pats would of won both leagues.
July 1st, 2011 at 11:20 pm
St. Pats wouldn’t have… lol plz stop talking.
July 1st, 2011 at 11:36 pm
Coulda, shoulda, woulda… I guess we’ll never know until it happens…
All these discussions on which teams are better…
So what is supposed to be the best league out there? Who does the majority say it is? What does the HS sportswriters say?
July 2nd, 2011 at 12:48 am
EBAL is clearly the best league in NCS and WCAL in the CCS. But other leagues field good football teams too despite all the arrogant trash talk from the parents/fans in these leagues
July 2nd, 2011 at 1:07 am
EBfootball (with no blue lettering)- “Pittsburg needs to step their game up?”
You obviously dont follow or see the BVAL teams performance and follow them well. Last year that statement would be more appropriate, but saying this statement this year? Come on man, do your homework on the BVAL more. Pittsburg is returning almost their whole defense and they have really great player on the offense side of the ball. The BVAL is very competitive Heritage was very solid last year. Freedom gave every team a run for their money even though they werent expected to do good. Even, Liberty was also mixing it up with Deer Valley and Antioch. I mean these statements are made, despite anyone doing any research on the BVAL
July 2nd, 2011 at 9:49 am
@BVAL Expert
In my oppinion, there’s only one way to finish a season good and that’s with a win (by way of a championship). I’m not a hardcore Pitt fan but they’re one of the teams I root for in DI. If you’re satisfied with them finishing the season with a loss, than how much do you really care?
July 2nd, 2011 at 10:06 am
@EBFootball,
No one in the Pitt camp will disagree that Pitt needs to step it up. From those close to the program, the coaching staff has been obsessing over that 0-5 start. Apparently, they have been breaking down film on four of their first five opponents. Again, another “Pitt has endless talent” comment. Ugh. If Pitt is able to bounce back from last seasons 0-5 start, it will not be as a result of its “talent” but of how well its coaching staff prepares their kids. Yes, Pitt has a huge upside but I would rather have our opponents under estimate us. That being said, leaving Pitt out, I think the BVAL contenders in 2011 look like this:
1. Freedom – Athletic QB and Rec return. Exciting team to watch.
2. Heritage – Running team coached very well.
3. Deer Valley – Lost lots of talent on the offense but Defense has some talent.
4. Liberty – New Offensive Coordinator = New Hope?
5. Antioch – Had nothing last year, returns nothing.
Just my $.02s
July 2nd, 2011 at 10:12 am
After reading all the post we shold have some exciting football this coming season.. Are you ready for some football?
July 2nd, 2011 at 6:54 pm
@Pitt Grunt- I have been doing homework and studying on heritage and it seems their are in the same situation as antioch. Both teams. Heritage is basically losing everyone on their starting positions. Not looking to good for heritage. However, The offensive coach is a very good play caller (who i think is the head coach). If they coach them up really good this season, it might not be a factor and might not determine their season.
Pittsburg is looking good.. they still have things to work on.. but they will be in good shape, better then all the teams in their league as far as being prepared. They might be weak up front, but that just means they might be better in the upcoming future.
I really like antioch’s WR/RB Robinson.. his role on the offense is similar to a jacoby ford “Burn people deep on a seam route” kind of mentality. Couple of plays i seen him run seam routes down the middle of the field trying to get by all the defenders and score just like a jacoby ford would do. I seen Antioch in passing league and they did good.. I think cause of their offense fits well with passing.
July 2nd, 2011 at 10:55 pm
Didn’t antioch look good in passing leagues last season also? How did they do again? How are u studying heritage? Are u on the field or just hearsay? I’ve seen heritage and freedom on the field so far. Freedom looks strong offensively. Lots of skilled position players, qb is looking good. As for heritage, most of the o-line is back. Back field is looking good, but that is heritage’s strong point -the run game. As for Pitt, they look good and are stacked with talent. But then again, they were stacked last year also. How about deer valley. Don’t they need coaches? I believe they have 2 total coaches so far. They have players, but also lost a lot. Their Freshman, and jv team didn’t have much to offer last season. Again all of this is speculation. It is way too early to predict and evaluate any team this early. There are so much factors that can happen and change. Some of players still need to be eligible to play. That alone can be a factor.
July 3rd, 2011 at 8:25 am
Pitt: was NOT stacked with talent last season on the varsity roster. They were mostly weak, under-conditioned and slim-hipped across the board for the most part. I was very disappointed by Pitt last year, terrible team for the most part, as a team.
In 2011 they are very talented, bigger, stronger and faster and with more talent. They will be junior-heavy but a lot of talent. Pitt will be better in 2011 much better and in 2012 they will be very good.
July 3rd, 2011 at 11:16 am
HSfootball- Theres a website I go on.. that i can re watch high school games. so thats my source. I compare the rosters to the video at each position. Heritage’s O-line isnt coming back, they are returning only one player on the o-line, two if your including the TE because he is coming back as well. The only starting lineman comming back is some guy named Cody Lanning.I dont expect Heritage to be a power house like they were last year, probably very far from it. None of this is hear say.
Im not to sure about Deer Valley’s coaches, but usually they have endless talent, they lose alot of good players, but a new wave of them might come next year.
Im not really predicting anything.. its more of a generalization based on the research.
July 3rd, 2011 at 12:16 pm
What site is that?
July 3rd, 2011 at 2:06 pm
Killer D u say not stacked but more talent than the rest of the league and much faster so u do the math. Seems like to me no matter what, it will boil down to the coaching point blank!! BVAL Expert its pure speculation on your part . Heritage has the brother of Will oliver who went to UCLA on full ride alot of those juniors saw time when Heritage had those blowouts so they are seasoned. Freedom will be in the mix as well. i agree with Pitt grunt how things will go but I guess thats why they play the game.
July 3rd, 2011 at 2:39 pm
Hsfootball- just because they played one game and probably only 3 minutes doesnt mean they are starters, just to let you know. Doesn’t mean anything, doesn’t mean they are returning their whole o-line. No speculation just generalization based research.
July 3rd, 2011 at 2:52 pm
Hahahaha your funny checked your film again i think Heritage had a few blow outs, more than one so you might want to watch some more film. i’m just sayin 3min. WOW.
July 3rd, 2011 at 3:24 pm
I dont “hate” a team nor am i biast or have anything against anyone, but i try to look at the pros and cons in each team. Which is called analyzing, but you do have a right to speculate anytime at your own risk, which i will closer before the season starts. I wish everyone good luck this season, and getting ready to watch some good football.
Im very interested to see every team in our league. And i really hope they represent the BVAL when it comes to preseason. This should be interesting.
Im very interested in Pitt playing Berkeley. Alot of people are saying berkeley didnt look very well this off season in passing league, but they are known to be very big up front over the years, on the other side you have pitt having lineman problems.
Also a big game to look at is Deer Valley and Folsom..
I had to splash water in my face to see if this was real.. and folks it is real haha Former CIF champs Folsom will be taking on our local Deer Valley Wolverines, should be a good game despite the outcome.
Freedom will have a hard test this year. Every team they are playing this year, is either better or equal to their type of talent. Each preseason team had a winning record from last season or made a playoff appearance. But going up against freedom is never a easy match up.
July 3rd, 2011 at 3:35 pm
Dont get me wrong heritage is a great program. I think they have the have the best coaching staff in the BVAL. But you cant run away from the fact that they are going to make changes, that will hurt them, or help them out. Thats the way things go in HS football. And you know what Hsfootball your right.. its to early. But any fan or follower knows they might not be able to put up the same numbers as last year. I really admire the offensive coordinator. I think he does an excellent job at calling plays, and who knows maybe he will prepare his team well when to point where inexperienced players might not be a factor.
July 3rd, 2011 at 11:40 pm
Guys…..Last years Pittsburg QB had little protection, he also telegraphed what he was doing on his handoffs and this led to fumbles and ground losses. The Pittsburg drawback is a total lack of displine…with all the tools that the Pirates will have this year they could very well have another rough season. both the O and D lines have to improve or all those speedy backs will be wasted…

July 8th, 2011 at 1:29 pm
What teams are at the Dougherty valley Camp? Who’s the most impressive team and players?
July 8th, 2011 at 5:55 pm
Saturday mornIng at DVC, passing league games Pitt/DLS/San Ramon 8 am. Houston vs Kline, should be a good show.
July 8th, 2011 at 9:26 pm
Saturday 7on7 tournament @ Newark Memorial. I think 8am to 4pm
July 9th, 2011 at 4:16 pm
How was the performance of the DVC passing leauge today? Who were the standouts? Which teams looked good which team needs more work?
July 9th, 2011 at 4:58 pm
DLS beats SRV 5-2, Concord 4-1 and Pitt 5-0. College Park, Pinole Valley, Encinal, Pinole Valley and Ygnacio Valley also there. Spartans best game was against Pitt in the finals, winning 5-0.
Anthony Williams for DLS was impressive, seven TD’s.He has bulked up and is strong, hard for defensive backs to control him. Michael Hutchins, Michael Parros, TJ Brasiel,Josh Jenkins all caught TD’s. Houston has a small army to throw to this year.
Kline didn’t show, he left his San Ramon teammates to fend for themselves while he went to a tournament in Oregon. Wolf coaches were not happy. Cameron Birse last years JV QB did well but had several balls dropped. Birse had some late balls that turned into picks but he will learn the speed at the varsity level.Good arm.
Ricky Lloyd-less Concord High looked solid. Won’t be the same but will compete.
July 9th, 2011 at 5:04 pm
concord drovethe ball more against dls than anyone else were at the 3 yard line twice…
July 9th, 2011 at 5:55 pm
Most of Concord’s games are essentially passing league games haha. But seriously is there an offense better suited for passing league than Concord? Maybe MV as well. Who is the QB this year for the Minutemen?
July 9th, 2011 at 11:10 pm
What about PV YV Encinal look?
July 10th, 2011 at 8:16 pm
I have been saying it for two years, watch out for SRV 2nd string quarterback Cameron Birse, 6’4, cannon arm and touch. Birse is a division 1 talent and will get 20 offers over next two years
How did PITT look at dvc? What about Pinole too?
July 10th, 2011 at 8:18 pm
EBAL Fan #2 Thanks for update on DVC passing tourney. I’ve read somewhere that Pitt didn’t play Mister Marshall Cotton (DLS transfer)alhough he was suited and looked healthy, and the Spartan’s were eager to see what MMC will do. DLS did see the good throwing hand of QB Malik Watson and he’s also a double-threat. It looks like Pitt will need MMC to score some over DLS. Well, it could be just a strategic move by Galli not to play MMC during these tourneys. We’ll see how Pitt does in the scrimmage. Or, was there a planned tournament with Pitt before that???
Can anyone confirm if Pitt vs Granite Bay at Pitt Stadium in preseason will push through??? Pitt has an unpublished sched for Sept 30 and looks like a buy week on 10/7. This is a must see.
July 10th, 2011 at 11:20 pm
yes killerd you have and i can remember you always talking about the qb, great call on your part
July 11th, 2011 at 10:54 am
Western Sports Championship Defense camp has been moved from dublin to mt. eden and takes place the next 3 days
July 11th, 2011 at 12:12 pm
@Kriart,
Pitt plays plays both Jefferson on Sept. 9 and Granite Bay Sept. 30 at home. The bye week is Oct 7. I am glad Pitt did not play Cotton in a 7-on-7 tournament against his old team DLS. Too many bad things could have happened.
July 11th, 2011 at 1:23 pm
HAALc/O2000, What teams are going to be there?
July 11th, 2011 at 8:25 pm
ME, Newark Memorial, Lowell-SF and Rodriquez
July 11th, 2011 at 10:15 pm
DLS at Monte Vista today. When Houston and Locke were playing the scoreboard lit up. DLS 4 MV 2. After they left neither team could muster a first down. Anthony Williams will be a star this year. Remember this name, David Moffitt. He is going to turn heads this year. Size, speed, might play both ways. Took a Houston pass to the house from his TE position and simply outran the DB’s and Safety. With that speed could play WR.
July 12th, 2011 at 12:23 am
I’ve only heard good things about Moffitt.
July 12th, 2011 at 1:16 am
Also Dalis Bruce has left Monte Vista and is attending St. John Bosco down in SoCal now.
July 12th, 2011 at 7:40 am
are any other haal schools having/attending contact camps
July 12th, 2011 at 9:52 am
Anyone know how BOD is looking this year? Haven’t really heard much from them.
July 12th, 2011 at 9:59 am
what-time does the ccc camp start on wed.
and who’s gonna b there
July 12th, 2011 at 10:31 am
Bruce leaving has to hurt MV this season, as he is a great athlete. Did the Bruce family move to SoCal? At least St. John Bosco isn’t some Prep School for football players a la Findlay.
July 12th, 2011 at 11:10 am
I would like to know how BOD is going to do this year. With Kennedy (f) coming on strong we could have two D3 schools coming out of HAAL and MVAL to push for the D3 championship. From what I hear both Kennedy’s (Richmond and Fremont) have a lot of young talent coming in, they could be the future of D3 for the next couple years. Both teams have a set of soph twins that can make plays. I know before the twins transferred from Washington to Kennedy with all of the coaches that jumped over, everyone thought they were going to be the future on var at Washington with what they did on the freshman level and no talent on there JV team
July 12th, 2011 at 1:51 pm
mvalfan, You hit it right on the head with JFK-Richmond and the Wheatley twins. Those two young men are beasts and will reck havoc in the BSAL this year. I still don’t know how good JFK will be this year scheme wise but the talent is definitely there.
July 12th, 2011 at 8:58 pm
Get to know his name, Jalen Harvey, he’s a beast and he was only a freshman last season! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=idqx5eue3F8
July 12th, 2011 at 11:03 pm
mval you sound crazy, remember Cardinal Newman the CHAMPS, is still in d3, Marin is still in d3.. So d3 ain’t going no where buddy, and no team from the mval or haal Will do CPR to revive it cause they been getting there asses kicked in D3.
July 12th, 2011 at 11:58 pm
Yeah I don’t know why your on the JFK Fremont bandwagon its gonna take a lot more than one year to be in the talks with Logan and WHS for the League Title. Remember its still JFK. I saw the Huskies at the Last two passing tourneys at CCC and CSM they won the first and lost in the Semis beating teams like defending state champ Paly, and a pretty good Montery Trail team from SAC-Jauq sec. Don’t sleep on the Huskies they still have some decent talent in the program. As far as all the transfers goes Its def a much better situation without hose kids who obviously didn’t buy into the program anyway. Im sure they will do well over at JFK but slow down on the D -3 tall win a meaningful League game before anything
July 13th, 2011 at 9:31 am
scoop- your crazy! BOD (HAAL) made it to the semis last year to lose to CN so i dont get your point, and they gave CN a better game then encinal did.
huskyfan- never said anything about ken(f) in leauge. but if you think washington is that good based on two passing leauges you need to look at more. they lost a lot on var had 17 kids on a lackluster JV team and their only stud players from frosh left. at ccc you sqeeked by every game against average teams, and kennedy(R) didnt have their best player. then at CSM you got paly at 9am before their kids woke up and you beat MT (a running team) and lost to hillsburg and christopher a team that was 3-7 last year. wash is going to have a tough year with a thin team and they are always banged up after preseason too.
July 13th, 2011 at 10:03 am
At Laney, Logan’s B team beat Washington in 7 on 7 easily. Seeing as Logan is a running team, this is not a good sign for Huskies.
July 13th, 2011 at 11:50 am
same story from all you guys…
a team doesn’t play well in one game and they suck…
a team plays really well in another and they get no credit just excuses for their opponent…
it is passing league…a lot more to be decided come september…
washington is two years removed from a semi-final birth in D1…not a lot of teams can say that…i think waiting until september to see if they are good makes more sense…with their preseason schedule i am sure we will find out real fast.
MVAL Fan – from what i keep hearing kennedy of fremont (guessing your team) is loaded with new recruits and talent, including some from the washington team. you sound like the favorites in that matchup, why diminish a future possible victory by trashing an opponent? because now if you don’t win what is that going to say for kennedy’s program and coaching staff? they recruited the supposed best from all these other schools and still can’t win?
July 13th, 2011 at 12:35 pm
I didn’t say nothing about Encinal, but Encinal played a 7-7 game the whole way with 6 starters out fyi until the 4td quarter so get your facts straight.. Bod was down 2 touchdowns practically the whole game. SO like i said the HAAL and MVAL IN d3 has been getting spanked.. been getting that ass kicked in d3 play off the last 3 years.. MARIN gave a great ass whooping couple of years ago as well in a 41-14 dismantle, WIth”stars” like CHRIS MARTIN, on the team.. but later. the score looked better with 27-42 as marin played their back ups almost the whole way in the second..
dont make me pull out the numbers and make you look stupid..
2007 HAAL- BOD 14- ynnacio valley 21
2008- MVAL Encinal 56- JFK FREMONT 8
HAAL 2nd Round BOD 27- MARIN 42
2009 MVAL- NO REP in D3 playoffs with a 16 team playoff brackets
HAAL BOD First round elimination.
2010. MVAL – AGAIN NO REP..
BOD- 2nd round elimination 56-35…
YEAH THE HAAL AND MVAL ARE REALLY GONNA bring it in d3……
O dowd this year has a chance to win it.. But i doubt it.. they havent had heart since the 1990s dominant teams and very early 2000s..
July 13th, 2011 at 8:28 pm
scoop good memory! but o’dowd had first year coach last year and made it to semis. not bad for first year
-kenn(f) has all new staff and about 20 new players so you cant compare them to anything. but scoop like norcal said lets wait for real games to start. cant look back only forward. scoop lets make it fun, if kenn(f) or o’dowd get knocked out of playoffs before encinal you win if they go as far or farther than encinal i win. sound good? and i still think kenn(R) is going to be a big player but i will stick with me local leauges
norcal- washington is still the favorites but you wont slap them in the face for a 54-0 win like last year
July 13th, 2011 at 8:50 pm
mavlfan- odowd had a 1st yr head coach but it wasnt his 1st yr at the school. those kids he had competed the yr b4 w/SL. and against cn they were outcoached. so b4 u crown kennedy anything remember coaching is huge in high school. especially team sports.
July 14th, 2011 at 1:03 am
—- MVAL FAN—–they made it to the second round… no semi finals, last time i check semi finals ment the last 4… please dont come here with your Ignorant statements with nothing to back it up.. you officially lost credibility in the blog.. you throw statements that look very accurate but have no true meaning behind it, all assumptions..
July 14th, 2011 at 9:02 am
Who went to CCC contact camp yesterday?
July 14th, 2011 at 9:39 am
well you will be right about one thing on here, your right my bad. i thought they lost to CN in semis. but let me know if you want to take me up on that bet
July 14th, 2011 at 11:45 am
I just seen that Monte Vista QB Jeff Lockie just committed to the Oregon Ducks!
July 14th, 2011 at 1:04 pm
Congrats to Lockie, but I will admit that decision is a bit surprising. Oregon also got a commitment from Jake Rodrigues of Whitney who shot up recruiting boards after his performance at the Elite 11 Stanford camp and was actually offered a spot at the Elite 11 national camp before Kline and Houston. Thought Lockie would wait until after the season to make a decision since I figured he would garner more interest as the season went on. But still that’s a big deal. Congrats to him.
July 14th, 2011 at 8:00 pm
3 BCS QB’s in one league- (and potentially another on the bench). Amazing.
July 15th, 2011 at 8:42 am
True, @382. Recent history shows, and I’m sure you will agree, that team success is reliant on so many other factors. It’ll be a brutal AND engaging EBAL season once again in ’11.
July 15th, 2011 at 1:07 pm
for sure buddy your on
July 16th, 2011 at 9:59 pm
there is a contact camp this week at liberty which has a good twist the teams are Mac Hayward Deer Valley and Liberty. With the Hayward Head Coach from there and Defensive Co who coached an played there as well should be fun to watch and should answer some questions as to what they are doing with Hayward I have heard some good things regarding whats going on there. Also Hayward’s varsity DC’s dad coaches on the DV team as well.
July 19th, 2011 at 10:20 pm
EB Football do u knwo the exact dates of the camp. If it already happened how did hwd do. i think the HAAL is going to be very interesting this yr. cant wait.
July 20th, 2011 at 12:41 pm
From what I have been told its this Thursday 21st it should let us know how the farmers will be under this new staff as I hear they are very much into a program and buying into it Discipline and execution. It should be interesting as the HC and DC have long ties to Liberty to see if there is anything regarding proving something. While Liberty isnt the cream of the crop when it comes to their league your also going to have Mac and Deer Valley there which should test Hayward.
July 21st, 2011 at 9:48 pm
saw the scrimmage at liberty. looks like hayward will be needing a lot more help. hayward had problems with both sides of the ball. liberty’s and deer valley’s defense was better than both teams offense. it is still early to make some adjustments. liberty handled deer valley’s offense pretty well. mac was not present at the scrimmage. are there any other scrimmages coming up?
July 21st, 2011 at 10:06 pm
Interesting. What was Hayward running? Did Redeamer bring Liberty’s system to Hayward?
July 22nd, 2011 at 11:23 am
watched scrimmage and while the defenses did do better a few things to note we have to remember that the new system put in at Hayward has only been in like a month talked to one of the coaches and learned they had only been in pads for the last two days. They didnt run Liberty’s offense you have to remember that when your a OC you have to run the head coaches offense which i am sure was the case at liberty.
Hayward however had huge problems against DV and didnt move the ball well against liberty but had better success there. Deer valleys defense is pretty good they are big up front with speed and fast in the secondary.
Their offensive group didnt do that well against liberty the first go round but scored in the second go round and they seemed to move the ball almost at will against Hayward.
Hayward ran a form of wing t flex bone its run by Gt i think they however need to get their QB in sync as it requires a very good QB to run it. Hayward seemed very disciplined hustled up to the ball, could be the start of a new attitude. They will do well in their league and rebuilding takes time. But interesting how Hayward came in two by two holding hands and left that way maybe a little DLS influence somewhere as thats the only team I really see do that on a consistent basis, hope they can input that winning as well.
July 22nd, 2011 at 1:12 pm
EB Football did you ask yourself a question then answer it?
July 22nd, 2011 at 2:09 pm
looks like there’s two of us now (I have no space, tho)
July 22nd, 2011 at 2:19 pm
Funny how long this blog took to get back Redeamer and Hayward. Now that we’re back to where this blog is supposed to be let’s do it some justice. What else do we know about Hayward? Is it the same offense Hayward has been running with a different guy calling the plays? What about the D? Is it more of the same but with a different attitude?
July 22nd, 2011 at 3:43 pm
I went to the scrimage.. and its going to be really hard to rank teams in the BVAL because each team has their pros and cons.. Liberty looked like they improved but i dont know if thats enough to beat some teams in the bval.. Both defenses looked great.. how ever offenses looked pretty bad.. liberty is having trouble at the QB position..both quarterbacks number 5 and number 12 threw alot of interceptions.. so its hard to tell for the bval but ill take a shot at ranking teams once the season gets closer.
July 22nd, 2011 at 3:57 pm
So far this is what it looks like to me
1-Pitt- No brainier
2-Freedom/Deer Valley- leaning more towards freedom (Better coaching and better preparation then deer valley.)Will be a good passing team this year and will be hard to stop this year.
3-Deer Valley- not very good coaching but the tough schedule should get them ready for league.
4-Heritage- Losing alot of players will not be a good year for the pats. Coaching will play a big factor for how good they will be.
5-Antioch- new QB= learning year.. not a consistent program.
6-Liberty- alot of seniors but no athletes to help compete.. should be looking for wins against deer valley or antioch.. hoping to catch them off guard. Like they almost did last year.
July 22nd, 2011 at 8:23 pm
I was at the scrimmage and have to comment on what BVAL Expert said regarding DV. for a team thats poorly coached their worst record over the past six years is 7-4 includes playoff loss. Talent alone doesnt get you those types of records as without coaching the team will not win. In fact if you watched what was going on there seemed to be a lot of coaching going on the DV side especially with the secondary which looked really good one of the interceptions was from a sophomore who looks real good out there.
But this thread is about hayward and the offensive scheme is new and they do have work ahead of them to be able to really compete. But one thing that was evident Hayward never gave up trying but they did get frustrated over the way things were going you could see it in them and their coaches but give them time there where some good points from what i can see.
July 22nd, 2011 at 8:35 pm
EBFootball sorry maybe we are long lost cousins haha. The defense that Hayward played was a five/ two with the SS playing up looka bit similar to Dv’s actually I asked around and found out that the defenisive cordinator who is new is a young guy who has coached with Redemer at Liberty but also played at DlS and At Liberty and at liberty he played for Redemer. He seemed to be very knowledable considering the time he had to work with these kids and carried himself well but he also was frustrated as well DV has a very good OL and DL which was extremely hard for Hayward to control but they should have had no trouble agianst Liberty and from what I remember Liberty didnt not score on Hayward but did move the ball, the only team that scored was DV. So at least defensively there they might have met expectations for their late start and short time in pads.
July 22nd, 2011 at 11:02 pm
@EB
Great minds…
Man or zone? That school’s a sleeping giant with talent. Anyone stand out? Funny, I was looking at their schedule and they only had 9 games. What’s up with that?
July 22nd, 2011 at 11:10 pm
It was a good scrimmage with lots of hard-hitting. I remember Liberty scoring once at the end against Hayward after dropping a couple of would-be touchdowns earlier, but I don’t think they scored against DV. Hayward had trouble moving the ball against both teams. I think DV scored on their last play against Liberty and a few times against Hayward. Both DV and Hayward had good size and will be tough in their own leagues.
July 23rd, 2011 at 12:53 pm
Eb Which School if your talking about Hayward it was a zone in the secondary and an invert depending on motion.
And Hayward does have some nice talent they have a set of Poly twins that look real good but as has been said they need alot of work and I think that this new regime will be very good for them. I understand the issue with the schedule is that one of the schools that was in a contract bailed to play a different school. Am sure that they are looking to fill that date but it may be hard considering the time frames.
July 24th, 2011 at 9:52 am
EB football- I believe that Galli and Woods(coach for DV) arent really that good of coaches, winning records dont really measure good quality coaches it can just means that they are good at putting the best 11 people on the field, it also depends how they teach and what plays they call and how creative they are, which alot people dont know about or dont take look at this area that im about to explain.. they just say “Oh your above .500 or Oh! your 8-2, that must mean your a good coach” No some people dont know how teams do play calling. If you look at how both these teams do play calling it is soooo simple and not creative, Pitt and DV They can get away with calling the same play 20 times in a row because teams will still have trouble defending it in their league but if they did that against someone out of league they will not be as successful. and yes i have seen that before last year with pittsburg. They called the same wildcat play against heritage 20 times in a row. THAT IS NOT GOOD PLAY CALLING FOLKS!… running a play more then ten times does not mean your a good coach but yet they can get away with it because they have good athletes to make the play work. Keep in mind play calling and athlete execution are two totally separate ideas because some teams have good athlete execution but bad calling. Its the players making a bad play call making it and turning it into a good play call because of their athleticism. Thats how its always has been with Pitt and DV.
Both these coaches have something in common. I believe that for both of these coaches there players do all the work for them. Have you seen the plays on offense for both pitt and DV? the play calling is soooooooooooo simple you can see a freshman team run the same plays. To be honest I dont know how pittsburg is good with the simple play calling they have, its there players that make it look good. Deer valleys more creative but still there play calling is simple and easy to pick up on. Freedom, Heritage, Liberty have good coaching because they are always making changes with their offense they have alot of plays to chose from. Alot of formations (especially heritage and Freedom with alot of formations.) Its just that they have a lack of athleticism some years. These teams have good play calling but they dont have good athlete execution.
July 24th, 2011 at 10:10 am
Looked like Hayward ran a 5-2 similar to Deer Valley. But deer valley ran plays that had alot of double tight ends which 5 man front will work well going up and double tight end offense. Haywards defense looked pretty bad, Haywards not used to seeing offensive fire power like the bval has. This scrimmage helped them see how fast teams can be.
July 24th, 2011 at 10:20 am
Eb football your right about the defense part for both teams.. Traditionally deer valley runs alot of man out of 5-2 defense. and Hayward zones more zone.
July 24th, 2011 at 12:25 pm
bval expert I Know that Hayward was in a %-2 it was identical to DV it even ran Their safety invert did you notice that. But I beg to differ with you and I am not saying that either Woods or Galli are as good but DLS runs the same plays over and over with some exceptions what’s their offense a veer whats their d 4-4 never changes except with slight wrinkles. I however do believe a winning record is a gauge of a good coach. Please answer the following what was DV’s records prior to Woods? Did they ever win a BVAL title? It has never been as good as with Woods the talent level has always been there but what happens is the system and the way its executed. You bash Galli and Woods regarding their play calling but they keep winning. You talk about good coaching at Liberty and that they change it up well, liberty did so because after the Stanz Rienders fiasco. Smtih had no choice as the team could not run the offense that Liberty ran in the past now Liberty is in an offense that is more like that of the 2005 Liberty team which as the CCT headline said “Liberty Cuts Pittsburg in Half” this was their best accomplishment and their head coach wasnt even thier it was his staff that won the game. Liberty does have good coaches I grant you that, ex-Liberty coaches are at Heritage, Freedom and Deer Valley at the Varsity level. Hmmm Redemer is from there and was there during that win as a D-line coach and one more tidbit the defensive co-ordinator was there as a player scoring the touchdown which started the momentum for liberty. So Hayward is lucky to have them. I beleive you will see improvements from them as the time passes.
Also DV does not run a man out of their 5-2 they never have it is a cover three with an invert on the safeties. The only time the corner was on an island was during Liberty’s trips right wideout left formation then and only then did DV go to a man one the single reciever side and zone on the trips side or when Liberty goes to a spread. also this is Liberty’s third offense system since Smith has been there and to be honest its not a great one for them as they have no speed at the wide outs and if you watched them closely all their WR come up to the line and are all flat footed so while their coaching is good they are missing some simple but important techniques in some areas.
Just like me, its easy to sit in the stands and make comments but these guys spend countless hours with these kids all coaches do and it is best to keep it simple. High school as college and pro coaches are gauged on wins if you don’t win you don’t stay unless there is no choice. Lad is considered a great coach why because he wins if he had a record like Liberty has had over the last three years he would not be considered a great coach.
July 24th, 2011 at 1:27 pm
Bval expert, Your so biased…you really said Hayward hasn’t Seen offensive fire power like the Bval” Please Its Not Ebal. Its a really good league tho But come on be serious. Quit it with your biased opinions you make them out to be so educated and accurate when there really bogus and have no true merit behind it. Pittsburg High will for sure bounce back this year. But there is No Ncs Winners coming out of that league so just stop it.
July 24th, 2011 at 1:52 pm
Eb football- i know your not saying they are that good. But im just saying thats how it is with those teams and coaching. DLS basic defense is a 4-3 and they switch to a 4-4 sometimes. But Dls does run the same plays but its not consecutively they dont run plays consecutively in a row.. pittsburg against heritage ran the same wildcat play for one whole offensive possession do you think that is good coaching hahaha?. I cant answer your question because rich woods has been there since the school had opened there was never a coach prior to him. yea they did win titles because of their outstanding players.. not their coaching. If you want to look at good coaching look at those teams i said from the last post.
Deer Valley has a big pool to chose from out of everyone in the bval. How can they almost lose and get upsetted by not 1 but 2 teams!!!! that were smaller then them!!!! where there school jurisdiction borders were way smaller compared to Deer Valley’s borders. Thats all points to bad coaching. How can you defend that? Yea they won those games but they really were struggling. Thats all coaching!!!. Freedom has one of they smallest borders in the bval. How can Deer Valley almost lose to a team that has small borders to chose from? Those schools alot more heart and one of these days they will knock off those teams because of bad coach preparation. I feel it coming. Im bashing them because people over rate those coaches. There are better play calling coaches in the BVAL and no one wants to accept that. They just think its those two coaches.
Yea smith was forced to change the offense they ran the double tight double wing offense his first year of coaching, similar to YV’s offense in 2008. He never kept his offense the same even when he was at liberty. Hes been changing it every year. He went from double tight double wing offense to a spread offense.
Deer Valley does run man coverage. they never run zone. They show that its cover 3 but its really man coverage, each team can show one coverage but it ends up being something else. And just because you see someone on a island doesn’t always mean they are in man.. they can still run zone but most teams just make it man coverage because its easier. They have been doing that since the school had been opened. They can do it because they are very fast in coverage.
I agree that goes back to what i brought up about from my last post Freedom liberty and heritage not having athletes in some years. Yea totally agree that liberty has no athletes and always flat footed etc. Freedom tried running that offense in 2010 season when they were 1-9 and it didnt do anything for them because they had no athletes. It seems like every other year they can really execute that offense to perfection. Yea your totally right about that EB football.
I used to be a former player in the BVAL and i know how coaches do things and i watch really closely to see if anything changed from when i was playing. But i dont know we will see how teams do this year

Scoop- Heritage and Deer Valley had one of the top offenses in the east bay last year.. Still Deer Valley is fast, and ran circles around hayward at the scrimmage. It didnt look pretty for Hayward. What else can i say? should i lie to everyone here and say that they dominated the scrimage?.. no now that being biased. I only cover the bval i cant speak for the ebal nor did i say anything about BVAL and Ebal being the same as talent. Your just putting words in my mouth, so if you cant handle “your” team being criticized then you should stay off of here, you act like Hayward is a great team and should of put up more of a fight. I call things how it is, and i seen with my two eyes that Hayward did not look good. Im not being biased.. my rankings werent biased they were legitimate reasons why i ranked them. I have the right to say that “Hayward hasn’t Seen offensive fire power like the Bval” because they dont play in a competitive league. You dont make sense when you say that.
July 24th, 2011 at 2:12 pm
Heritage had the 2nd best offense in the NCS right behind concord, so i can legitmatley say that bval offense does have fire power.
July 24th, 2011 at 2:38 pm
Hey BVAL Expert, Get your facts straight
1. You said Rich Woods has been there since the school opened.
YOU ARE DEAD WRONG Woods has been there for about six years
2.DLS runs a 4-3
WRONG again their basic D is a 4×4 which at most times is stacked know how I know I have known a few of their players and the starting middle lineback who went to play at Neveda. So are you going to say that their starting middle linebacker doesnt know that???
3.They run the same play over and over.
Well could heritage stop it did they and was this last year? I think Pitt came out on top
4. They win titles becuase of their outstanding players not becuase of their coaching.
Deer valley has never one a title before Woods and with the same talent pool.
5. Deer Valley has one of the biggest borders.
It splits Antioch with AHS and with Freedom adn I can tell you there are three or four from last year that went to Heritage that live in DV boundries.
6. How can DV almost lose to Freedom
Thats an easy one have you ever heard the saying on any given Sunday well this is even more tru in HS sports when Liberty beat Pitt in 05 do you know how long it had been lets put it this way Rod Beaver was just starting to coach at liberty over 25 years!!!! Pitts team went to the finals that year.
the next year Liberty went 0-9-1 tying MAc with coach Carter almost beating them and wow how did they do that we are talking kids and its true on any given Friday.
7. Smith keeps Changing the offense it never stay the same.
The offense has been the same for two years because they had some players last year which are no longer there so he hasnt changed it yet and the reason for changing was his personnel.
8. Deer Valley never runs zone they run man.
I happen to talk to the D coordinator at DV please call him and ask him if he runs a man he will tell you they run a zone cover three with what he calls a naturual invert. Are you watching the same team Did you see them lock up when Liberty went to the spread and did you see the cover three when they came out in a normal set come on.
9. I was a former player in the BVAL
if you are then you should know what is going on if you played for liberty i think I know who you are based on the post you have had in the past if not then I sorry as I am mistaken but you need to get your facts straight if you really are a BVAL expert its easy to pick this league but to not know that Woods is about the third or fourth coach in DV’s History is really wrong. That the only real time DV ran a man was when Khristoff was there or Tawian because of there speed.
Also if you were a player you may know how coaches do things but you really dont know why they do things untill you are privy to their meetings which most players are not.
The only thing that you are right about today ids the fact that Hayward doesnt play in a league as competative as the BVAL but if you are any type of informed person when it comes to HS football you know that the EBAL is considered a much stronger league than the BVAL.
July 24th, 2011 at 2:44 pm
Also Expert just to point something out the DC at DV is a former Liberty Head coach from back in the day way before Stanz Riendeers and Smith. So yes liberty has a number of coaches in the BVAL I can also give you the list of other coaches at Heritage and at freedom and at DV and at hayward if you like
July 24th, 2011 at 3:27 pm
2.DLS does run a 4-3 they switch up back and forth..
3. Your running away from the argument of coaching quality your points right their means nothing or have nothing to do with what you are are talking about.
5. Deer Valley is the biggest school in the BVAL still how can you lose to Freedom and Liberty whose student bodies are alot smaller. Lacking preparation before games.
6. What does that have to do with now? Still running away from actual argument. I proved that their coaches sometimes dont prepare over the weeks very well.
7. He did change his offense every year Last year he ran a pistol formations then converted to spread this year and in 2010 he switched to a pro style offense. Every year he has changed his offense. Hes doing the right thing by changing it up.
8. Deer Valley ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS been known to run man. Maybe he just made the change this year. You cant really tell without any motion what the defense is in.
and yes i seen everything.
9 I know for a fact that deer valley ran man coverage in 2009 and 2010 when they had Sean Combs and Kristoff Williams. Trust me I know alot about this league. Eat, slept, dreamed about this league. Its not about what happened 4 years ago its what happens now.
July 24th, 2011 at 3:31 pm
a good coach is a coach that can setup an atmosphere for these young men to develop into successful athletes. If Galli is doing that.. then he is a good coach.
July 24th, 2011 at 3:47 pm
BVAL expert You run away from what you dont know
1 DLS does NOT run a 4-3 their fourth linebacker their Spartan as they call him is in a four four look all the time I know having sat in on a clinic Edison ran so do you want to take your word or his. They fall back into quarters the 4-3 look very seldom their base IS FOUR FOUR according to their D coach or is he wrong.
2 Coaching quality has everything to do with it how could Deer Valley which has been around since 1996 I am shocked that a BVAL expert who lives and breathes this league wouldnt know that and dv with the same talent pool not win a title and almost instantly they win one when they get a GOOD COACH Woods and I am not saying he is great but he brought a winning tradition from Vanden
3. Deer Valley is the biggest school in the BVAL wrong again school divisions are based on attendence according to the state heritage and liberty and deer valley and pitt and AHS are all D-1 schools which means that they are of equal attendence Liberty in 2007 was0r 06 was the biigest attendence school in the BVAL with about 3100 kids GET FACTS STRAIGHT
4 Smith Did not change his offense every year this is the same as last year and the year prior they still ran a version of the wing T
5. BVAL EXPERT DV does not and has not run man except for when they lock up their best such as combs kristoff but they Run ZONE a cover three with a natural invert.
The only player allowed to be in man was those guys but when they dont have a stand out like that they run a zone always have. I know My kid played they during those years so unless you played there dont overspeak or reveal how you know for a fact. As I believe you are a running back from the liberty 06 07 team.
BVAL expert you may sleep and eat this league but you really dont know what your talking about quality coaches win titles and it doesnt matter who you have coaching it could be Bill Belichick he would never get past DLS no team in this area ever will until there is a drop off there or a change in rules that levels the playing field.
July 24th, 2011 at 3:54 pm
DLS runs a 4-4. They have the Spartan position which operates as an OLB/SS depending on the call. But the base defense is a 4-4.
July 24th, 2011 at 3:57 pm
I also agree with you that its about what happens now and here are facts look it up google it if you have to DLS runs a veer and a 4 4 defense as a base. they will walk up depnding on the team or drop back into quarters but base is 4×4
Liberty changes its offense becuase when you dont have talent you have to do something and their coaching is good but winning programs and good winning coaches use one system and teach it to the freshmen JV and Var.
So lets talk about now Pitt will be a powerhouse this year they have watson back at QB and by the way all last year he lived in Antioch and commuted to Pitt. small towns people know things.
Pitt is the team to beat DV will take second in front of Freedom and Heritage have you seen DV’s schedule
Foothill
Washington
FOLSOM last years state champ
College park
Vacaville
Then BVAL starts
Its between freedom and heritage for third
then it rounds out with Liberty and sadly AHS is last
Brentwood bowl will go to Heritage
Mayors cup to DV
Bell to Freedom
and little big game to Pitt
Bet you dinner at VIcs if your a betting man
July 24th, 2011 at 3:58 pm
BVAL Expert please change your handle until you get your facts straight maybe something like BVAL guy as expert you are not.
July 24th, 2011 at 4:01 pm
see how easy it is to pick this one almost like the EBAL
DLS and then everybody else and section committee will have almost the whole league in the playoffs.
July 24th, 2011 at 4:23 pm
Hey but this is about Hayward GO FARMERS!!!!!!!!
July 24th, 2011 at 5:23 pm
Wow. Someone really as a burr up their backside about Galli. Sounds a bit personal to me. As was insinuated by EB Football, unless you are in the coaches meetings, on the sidelines on game day, and in the locker room at halftime, you have no clue why a coach calls certain plays. Galli has a lot of good asst coaches around him, and believe me, they NEVER hesitate to speak their mind.
Players from Antioch, Pittsburg, and Brentwood are constantly moving around. That’s nothing new.
Freedom’s QB Mayes and WR Shepard are from Pittsburg. They left Pittsburg because their parents were not successful in trying to intimidate Galli into starting their kids. Galli is successful because he has the cajones to kick off the team good players with attitudes. My Pitt buddies disagree with me on this. Very few know how difficult it is to manage the off season and the petulant attitudes of players and their parents. Its not always about X’s and O’s.
July 24th, 2011 at 11:37 pm
HEy Bval expert I am not a hayward Fan I was just saying And i am glad everyone on this Blog knows that All you do is Throw Statements that sound very accurate that are false.. as i refered to in my earlier post # 404 .. Your opinion Is no longer taken serious Thank you EB football for stating the facts, You sound like the REAl expert
July 25th, 2011 at 7:44 am
Bueller, Bueller, Bueller
July 25th, 2011 at 9:25 am
It really looks bad when all you guys gang up on one person. Dont bash this guy, I actually trust this guy more because he has actually played in the league, I bet you none of you guys have ever put on pads and get knocked on your butt a couple of times. Yea his facts might be off. But how can he keep track of what happened 20 years ago? All of you guys are getting mad at what hes saying about your favorite team when its his opinon. As far as im concered your opinon is just as equal as his opinion. so stop acting like his opinion doesn’t mean anything its just as good as yours, he actually gives good reasons of why he thinks things might happen. Deer Valley has always been known to keep a game close with a league opponent who is weaker then them every year, last year it was 2 teams. He is totally true about that. How is this guy biased if he talks about the pros and cons about each BVAL team? Thats not being biased you might want to look up what biased means before opening up your mouth and calling people out on here. From his posts I cant tell who his favorite team is because he talks about all of them equally. Hes technically not being biased. For any league it is not easy to pick a team apart and see who will win, whoever says its easy is crazy. BVAL has more chances of upsets then any NCS league out here. Surprisingly Antioch lost to Liberty. So dont say its easy to pick a league apart thats totally false
July 25th, 2011 at 8:29 pm
@FBDad234,
No one came down on BVAL Expert for having an opinion. It was his stubbornness in the face of facts. Example, he steadfastly insisted that DLS (not a BVAL team) ran a 4-3 defense even after all of the DLS fans said otherwise. He even used the Al Bundy excuse that he played high school football as to why he was right and everyone was wrong. Laughable. Also, some of us that post here actually played football in College (though not on the west coast). Playing college football tends to broaden your perspective beyond east contra costa county. BVAL Expert, I am guessing, is a Brentwood guy.
July 25th, 2011 at 8:57 pm
FBDad234 your right it is really bad when a guy gets bashed for no reason so maybe BVAL should apologize to Galli and Woods who I think know more about football than BVAL Expert. Also your trusting someone cause they played is your choice and your making an assumption as to everybody else’s credentials. I jumped on here because I thought the twist which I mentioned regarding Liberty DV and Hayward was pretty cool. I respect both Galli and Woods for their accomplishments and I trust them more than expert. However I don’t like when someone takes that mantle of an expert and talks down to everybody thinking he is the person who knows all. You can come on this board and say that you think this and that buts let’s not bash coaches who put more time in than anyone including the players. I respect BVAL Expert for playing but would you really trust him to scout a team? I played in my life as well and I am sure that there are a number of people here who have. Playing doesn’t make you knowledgeable it just means you played how you study the game and how you prep is key.
You defend him by saying that his facts are off well if he really played and I know he did he should know these facts. He professes himself to be an expert with an attitude that exemplifies his persona. Also if he played we are not talking about anything past 05 six years ago Liberty’s beating Pitt or Woods coming to DV his facts aren’t off they ARE COMPLETELY WRONG DLS in a 4-3 DV in a man or Woods as the only coach DV ever had come on. I watch and follow Liberty Heritage and DV and DLS and now due to Redeemers going to Hayward them as well so it’s not about bashing a favorite team but rather getting it right. Respecting coaches who really do a good job with what they are handed. Everything we have talked about on this board is current not 20 years ago as you say it sounds like somebody we all know on this board.
You are right these are all Opinions but facts are facts in certain things and those if you’re going to have a repartee need to be correct. BVAL expert has made his bed by thinking he is right all the time when he really isnt. I do agree with you that DV has a tendency to let down that is known by everyone but what I said about any given Friday is true after all we are talking about HS. That’s why I brought up Liberty beating Pitt those 5 or 6 years ago I was at that game a great game in which MOMENTUM won the game as Pitt was the more talented team.
Also no one said he was biased against the league but his biased against two coaches in the league he was right about Hayward he was right about DV to a point but he argues points in which is so off base and tells everyone he knows for certain.
So let’s talk about picking the league winners and upsets. Last year Liberty had not won a BVAL game since 06 it was only a matter of time before someone fell to them. Last year they were ahead of Heritage at the half and then lost then almost beat DV on a few plays but they had a great last minute drive Parsons lead them down the field for the score but in the end they couldn’t do it even with some fluke calls and then AHS which is a program in decline came along and Liberty took them it. Was really a surprise or just a matter of time. This year there will be very few if any upsets it will pan out as I said with the only real doubt as to the second place team DV will have to be on their game and if you’re a betting person the bet I put out there for BVAL I put to you regarding the different rivalry games.
So if I offend anyone sorry but I stand by what I say. I do however find it strange that BVAL expert decided not to answer this and you did.

BOD LB Hardy Nickerson Jr. Commits to CAL!
July 25th, 2011 at 10:11 pm
do u think hardy sr is going anywhere after hardy jr graduates?
July 26th, 2011 at 10:03 am
I was talking to one of the BOD parents this weekend and they stated that Sr was pretty happy to be the head coach for the Dragons. Being that Jr. is staying at Cal, I’d would say that he stays at BOD at least until Jr graduates from Cal… my $.02 for what is worth….
July 26th, 2011 at 10:33 am
hope he stays. with bowers(san leandro), barnes(arroyo), perenon and thompson(mt eden), redemer(hayward) and the rest of the coaches in the league things should be looking up for the HAAL in the future.
July 26th, 2011 at 12:34 pm
Since the season of 7-on-7 tournaments and camps with pads are over, we are all looking a dry period of little to no news. In my estimation we have four weeks till two-a-days begins, six weeks till the scrimmages, and seven weeks till the season begins.
This is going to be rough.
July 26th, 2011 at 12:35 pm
San Leandro needs a new coach. Sorry but Bowers is not getting it done and he is way underachieving with the advantages he has over there. They should dominate the HAAL and be playing the top Bay Area teams every year in non league.
July 26th, 2011 at 12:43 pm
Pitt Grunt you are right nothing to loom froward to till season. We even lost BVAL expert so its really going to be rough. Sorry but couldn’t resist
July 26th, 2011 at 2:07 pm
Bowers has done a very good job there through the years.
The depressing era offootball demographics of San Leandro have taken hold, and many of the super kids are not there any more or attend Moreau and BOD, and many more do not have the grades to play.
San Leandro is more in line with JFK Fremont, Washington, American, Neward, Irvington, and somewhat James Logan.
I am afraid the best years of SL Pirate football are in the rear view mirror, and it has nothing to do with Bowers.
July 26th, 2011 at 7:17 pm
ManDown: this yr san leandro plays 9/2 berkeley, 9/9 @Logan, 9/16 bellermine and in the past has played valley christian (san jose). those are some of the better teams in the bay area not just ncs. bowers is doing good job and other than last yr his program is the bench mark for the rest of the HAAL.
July 26th, 2011 at 9:03 pm
SL had the one year under Bowers when they went to the Coliseum and after that all I know is there’s been bunch of first round exits. When was the last time he beat a good team in non-league? I don’t know what you think but its hasn’t been that hard to win the HAAL as of late. You say he’s not getting the same kind of players? Well IMO that tells me how good of a coach he is because he has numbers and size if talent is lacking. I don’t want to hear it.
July 27th, 2011 at 12:33 pm
coach bowers is a great guy as 4 coaching he’s lacking
he motivates the weak players and makes the good players hate him when u go outside of the sl coaching realm and gEt real coaching u will learn 2 despise him as a coach
BUT HE IS A REALLY GOOD PERSON HUMBLE WELL MANNERED
U GOTTA LUV THE DUDE LOL
July 28th, 2011 at 11:30 am
Chalktalk,
You criticize every coach in the East bay, yet you never coached or played at a respectable level. Bowers starred at Bellarmine prep(San Jose), FB Scholarship to Cal, Won numerous HAAL football titles. He would out coach you, out hit you, & out man you everyday of the week. You are the typical hide at home behind the computer, shii talkin bloggers like Mandown,Billjohnson, & other cowards who talk a big game but never did it themselves. Where did you ever coach? What college did you ever play at? Look in the mirror, you’re a member of the “Never did it myself, but I can hate on those who did” club. Educate us on your expert credentials, you never was.
July 28th, 2011 at 11:34 am
I forgot Perkin is the president of this blogging club of haters who never did shii themselves, but hate on people who have accomplished 1000 times more than they ever did.
July 28th, 2011 at 12:00 pm
Sky Walker, How would you know who I am or my credentials? I could be a legendary coach or player myself. Guess what? You will never know clown! People don’t like to hear the truth and what’s real. You know Bowers is underachieving at SL and thats why you come on here crying.
July 28th, 2011 at 12:53 pm
lol skywalker.. i think you care more about what they say about Bowers than Bowers does himself.
Just let them have their opinion.. it has no bearing on what happens to Bowers… at all
July 28th, 2011 at 1:24 pm
bow down young sky walker
u must b one one the weak players that he inspired
“that cool”
protocol and procedure doesn’t constitute the truth JACKASS
DONT FORCE A KID TO LEARN A LIE THEN WHEN HE GETS REAL COACHING AND FIND OUT HOW FOOLISH SOME HEAD COACHES REALLY ARE.
DONT PUT A CHEERLEADER ON THE FIELD AND MAKE A WHOLE TEAM SUFFER BECAUSE OF YOUR ETHICS ( THIS IS FOOTBALL ITS NOT A GAME U CAN GET HURT OUT HERE U CUP CAKE)
July 28th, 2011 at 1:45 pm
sky walker the next time u want 2 sucK on some nuts
make sure their eatable
POOR BABY U PREFER NUTS OF A PACIFIER
July 28th, 2011 at 1:46 pm
POOR BABY U PREFER NUTS OVER A PACIFIER
July 28th, 2011 at 4:33 pm
Bowers is a huge under achiever & nothing you say can change that. The man embarassed himself last year against some very mediocre teams.
July 28th, 2011 at 6:21 pm
This is becoming heated, maybe we can Change course and start a new topic:
WHO are the Top 50 East Bay head coaches of the last decade and at what schools?
July 28th, 2011 at 10:24 pm
Congratulations to two former BVAL players Diondre Borel (Freedom) and Tawian Jones (Deer Valley).. Borel Signed with the Green Bay Packers and Jones with the Raiders.. Today is a good day for the BVAL. If this doesnt make the news on high school then i dont know what would.
July 28th, 2011 at 10:37 pm
Killer,
I’ll go with the obvious:
Shaughnessey from Salesians
Lad @ DLS
Wedemeyer from Los Gatos
Those are 3 that come to mind as having legacies here in the Bay Area… young coaches that I think have the potential to be “great”…my $.02 since you asked.
Coach B @ Cal High
Nickerson Sr. at BOD
July 28th, 2011 at 11:24 pm
Really? Nickerson after 1 year?
July 29th, 2011 at 12:01 am
Tee, why not? Read my post,,,coaches that have potential..
July 29th, 2011 at 1:57 am
I like The coach at cardinal Newman PAUL CRONIN, This Guy wins with ZERO athletes.. Give him some players and i swear he will beat ANY team Most likely in CALIFORNIA.. Next up Coach LAD… Come on do I really have to?….
Coaches that have potential to be great it Brian hamilton from Concord, and Coach Joe Tonerio at Encinal. ALL these guys are top coaches and there Teams are great.. But these are the 4 that Really stand out to me
July 29th, 2011 at 3:05 am
Apologies S1lver.. I didnt read it through entirely.
July 29th, 2011 at 7:43 am
I like Cronin also. Great coach. No athletes but a great situation. He did coach at Santa Rosa High for a short time any North Bay guys know how he did there? I heard he struggled with some of the attitudes there.
July 29th, 2011 at 9:26 am
tee, no worries, i know that a 1 year stint can be a bit premature.
July 29th, 2011 at 11:04 am
What are your credentials? Let me see.
ChalkTalk
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
- Bad mouthed 45 high school coaches in the bay area.
- Once caught a TD pass at the 6th grade end-of-the- year picnic.
- Had a 12 game win streak on Madden vs. ManDown.
- Got to run the game clock for the San Leandro Crusaders’ season opener.
- Sat on the same bench in junior high as Mandown did & criticized their coach for not playin them in a 42 point blow out loss.
Y’all need to take off your dresses & put on some pants. You gossip like a bunch of old women at a family barbecue.
July 29th, 2011 at 11:08 am
@S1lverngreen, great choices.
1 Lad @ DLS
2 Beam @ Skyline
3 Shaughnessey @ Salesian
4 Sweeney @ Foothill
5 Wedemeyer @ Los Gatos
6 Perenon @ O’Dowd
7 Zuber @ Logan
I think Falevai at Fremont-Oakland has alot of potential. Completely turned around that program the past couple years
July 29th, 2011 at 2:07 pm
Some funny stuff on here, truly imaginative.
But I really like some of the coaches named in the top 50, although Los Gatos is not in the East Bay.
Since we are talking the top 50, in no particular order I would add:
Alonzo Carter, MacDaddy and Berkeley
Dave Silvera, Alhambra
Doug Longerro, Las Lomas
Bergman, MV
Kravitz, SRV
Pardi, CV
Blanton, St. Patricks
John Wade, Miramonte
July 29th, 2011 at 2:46 pm
Zuber has done nothing at Logan.
July 29th, 2011 at 2:56 pm
I would say Neal Fromsen gets the glory at Logan
July 29th, 2011 at 4:05 pm
So how are particular HAAL teams lookin in the summer? Has anyone seen anything noteworthy?
July 29th, 2011 at 4:16 pm
sky-walker what 45 coaches r u talking about
SECONDLY ONLY AN JACKASS THINK CREDENTIALS MAKES A GOOD COACH i just worked with a cat with all these so call credits, cat didnt no squat.
all i know is most coaches ive encountered think that an x equals an o when in fact the x maybe better than 3 o’s
thats y their bullshit plays dont work BUT THIS KNOWLEDGE COMES THE PLAYING THE GAME WITH TALENT NOT COACHING FROM A BOOK OR DVD *DIRT NAPPER* I hope u dont coach

If you guys are talking about good coaches coach kepler from College parks been there since the 70′s and has taken to his team to the play offs almost every year.. plus his teams discipline doesnt make stupid mistakes.. they up setted Amador Valley which no one thought they would them.
July 29th, 2011 at 9:33 pm
in the ncs playoffs 2 years ago
July 29th, 2011 at 11:52 pm
haal c/0 2000 what happend to barnes? at arroyo?
July 30th, 2011 at 12:18 am
Nothing happen to coach Barnes he is still there.
And for the record Arroyo was the last two teams left in the King of the hill at CCC without there four starting o- linemen..
July 30th, 2011 at 1:04 am
He was naming great coaches of the HAAL for each school.. Wayne Roberts was at Arroyo before Gilmette. Dont remember the years, but Roberts led Arroyo to plenty playoff games.
July 30th, 2011 at 10:33 am
re 463,464- that “upset” has an asterisk. Stancil- AV’s ’09 QB- accounted for 50% (he ran for 750) of their offense before he tore his hammie in week 10. If Stancil’s healthy, AV beats CP, then Washington in the semi to gain the final. yo bill. With all due respect to the CP coach, that’s an amazing tenure, but hardly a quality win to cite. I’m unsure, but Stancil may have the highest EBAL, maybe even East Bay, QB rushing stat in the last 10 years, although Wayne-dLS had 600 or something one of his two years (before EBAL of course.) Ben or Jimmy probably have the numbers on this.
July 30th, 2011 at 1:23 pm
465) Scoop
1yr for Barnes. but so far so good. give him time.
July 30th, 2011 at 2:06 pm
I think Arroyo has a chance to WIN league this year. All the talent they have on the team
Michael Young Jordan Fogal Justin Porter A experience O Line .
Key Lost is Isiah Burks
2 Bishop O’Dowd
3 San Leandro
4 Tennyson
5 SLZ
6 Castro Valley
7 Hayward
8 Mt Eden

467- Like I said CP upesetted AV 34-21.. “Hardly a quality win”????? Thats like saying beating Heritage isnt a quality win i dont know how you can say that. I see your a CHS fan so.. that tells me alot about what you think about CP, so your opinion will be not taken seriously.
Heres a list of QB’s that have over 750 rushing yards in 09-10 season same year that stancil played.
Tyrone Duckett (Encinal)- 938
Jazper Strange (South Fork, Miranda ca)- 908
Chris Pender (Mckinleyville – 837
Jonathan Willis (Logan)- 812
and three other people that were ahead of him.
Dj King from Winsdor and Josh Wheless from St Vincent de Paul

HAAL C/O 2000,Your list is full of youth & ignorance. Rodriguez in the same sentence as Benevidez? Puh-Leeez. SLZ’s Haagenson only had one good year the rest they were pitiful, Versino did more for the Rebels. Becker was a perennial loser at Tennyson losing 8-10 games a year, Crocker easily won more games for them. Arroyo-Roberts, SL-Calcagno, & BOD- Perenon are good selections though. Sunset – Francis & what’s this fascination with Rodriguez? Vermeil trumps Rodriguez & Brosnan over Brennan on any sane list, but Brennan is a shadowy 2nd.
HAAL Coaches:
Arroyo: Wayne Roberts – won a few titles
Bishop O’Dowd: Paul Perenon – 200+ wins
Castro Valley: Andy Brenan – several NCS runs but Brosnan better
Hayward: coach from the 80’s and 90’s – Clark is the one
Moreau: Jesse Rodriguez – you must be related to him
Mt Eden: Ron Benevides or Jesse Rodriguez – joke
San Leandro: Calcagno – battled De La Salle for a few titles
San Lorenzo: Haagenson – 1 year flash not better than Versino
Sunset: i dont go that far back. sorry – I do, Francis won a title or 2.
Tennyson: Becker – Did he ever have a winning season? Crocker much better.
July 31st, 2011 at 10:39 am
If not for De la Salle, SL would have won at least 3 or 4 NCS titles during Calcagno’s era.

Man,this thread is getting long and it started on June 6. Someone should start a couple of new ones. Football season around the corner!

Regardless of injuries, which all teams must face, #14 CP beat #3 AV in 09 & #13 CP beat #4 Foothill in 2010. Both were nice wins for Kepler over top 4 seeded EBAL teams.
August 1st, 2011 at 7:12 am
thank you prep fan…damn everyone always has an excuse for THEIR teams and nobody ever wants to give credit to someone else’s team. maybe av lost because it was raining, or maybe it was a full moon, or maybe one of their key players broke up with his gf before the game.
did CP win or not? CP is a very solid program, are they elite well no. but they are a tough team anytime you play them. give them some credit…
if i remember correctly CP put up 34 points in the 1st half vs AV that night. That didnt have much to do with Stencil not playing.
In all honesty the only true ELITE program right now is DLS. Who else can you say that about?
Lots of good coaches in the east bay, but here are my two cents on that…you guys trash kepler or gali who has been doing it well for how long..yet praise hamilton like he is the next chip kelly, or nickerson, or billeci…All very good coaches, but all have really had only one successful season. i mean this time last year nobody was thrilled with coach b’s hire at cal after an early 1st round exit in his first year, most were calling for his head. bottom line he was a good coach is 1st year, and then got even better his second…you guys are all about the flavor of the month.

CASTLEMONT SHUT DOWN* SAN LEANDRO GOT OAL KIDS WITH PRO TALENT. dont u dare act like it was coaching. hows coach C doing at chabot lmao. Stats dont lie when u speak of the players but all the busted play that still go 4 td dont u dare take credit UR RECORD DOESNT REFLECT UR COACHING TALENT
August 1st, 2011 at 10:38 am
Calcagno gets out-recruited I think.. He’s a better HS coach than he is a CC/JC Coach
August 1st, 2011 at 11:13 am
norcalfball,
“.yet praise hamilton like he is the next chip kelly, or nickerson, or billeci…”
Where did anyone in this blog did anyone cite this?? I stated that coach B and Nickerson Sr. have the potential to be great..”potential” being the key word here. I would also throw coach Galli in this category, I am sure that there are other young coaches out there that are able to field competitive squads year after year, I am just not familiar with those programs and their coaching staffs.
August 1st, 2011 at 12:30 pm
What years did Pickford coach? I know Tennyson hasn’t come to close to winning a league title since my family moved here in the late seventies.
August 1st, 2011 at 12:46 pm
My HAAL predictions
1. San Leandro – Typical SL team fast & athletic
2. Bishop O’Dowd – Nick Sr. & Nick Jr. make it close.
3. Arroyo – Michael Young wins MVP.
4. Hayward – Always a factor in the HAAL.
5. Mt.Eden – Perenon magic taking shape.
6. Castro Valley – Going nowhere fast.
7. Tennyson – They can’t compete in the HAAL.
8. San Lorenzo – The worst team in the League.

August 1st, 2011 at 2:12 pm
Im not hating on anyone’s success that they had. I just hate what some coaches do to get there, like the little things. Two totally separate ideas.
No one is saying cp is an elite program. Its really cool to watch CP because they have inherited Discipline for many of years and if anyone says otherwise then they probably have a son in the same league or something because this is definatley true. Sometimes they Win and capitalize off of their oppenets mistakes (Which thats what they always been known to do), which gives there program a good identity, despite what there record is.
I give credit to teams whose coaches arent hot heads, and teams that actually deserve to win attitude wise, teams that know how to take a loss and know how to take a win.. I love those teams and respect them alot and will give them justice for recognition.
Alot of you guys dont know what can go on behind close doors. You think some coaches are deserving but attitude wise they really are not. As a player I would hear stuff that i shouldn’t be hearing about other coaches. For example, all of you people think Galli is the next chip kelly and you think hes a nice guy and all but i heard somethings that i souldnt of heard by coaches.. I over heard that about the 08-09 season Galli did not help some players by making them a recruiting videos.. If you guys remember that huge Left Tackle for pittsburg I think his name was Colwell.. His Mother and Father died, the kid wanted to improve his life, his old brother or sister was taking care of him.. but Galli refused to make him a recruiting video for whatever reason, tells you what kind of a coach he was. He did the same thing to Dj Young.. Didnt make him a recruiting video either. and both this players had potential to play in college. In the collegiate world if your applying for colleges and there is a family conflict that happens. Then colleges will give you more benefits and most of your supplies and book would be paid.
August 1st, 2011 at 2:18 pm
aloso more chances of getting excepted to anywhere that fits there studying criteria. So theres no reason why they couldnt gone. grades werent a issue because everyone on the team had good grades, pittsburgs team was pretty smart academically.

Football in just a few weeks, then all the questions will be answered, until then everything is just speculation!
August 2nd, 2011 at 9:41 am
ChalkTalk,
Arroyo’s coaching staff is the worst in the league. They had a lot of talent & got beat by 50 points in the 1st round of the playoffs. They gave up 61 points to a 5-5 Hayward team. They went overtime w/ Tennyson and only won by a point. They lost to a bad Newark Team by 10. The only thing they did last year was an upset of SL. I give them credit for that. But Puh-lease! Tell me what else they’ve done? Take a look.

August 2nd, 2011 at 10:03 am
ChalkTalk,
34-7 loss to O’Dowd at home? Click that link above before you speak on Arroyo beatin BOD and winning the league. Arroyo’s defense is the problem & last I heard Barnes was running the defense. Maybe his OAL defense don’t work in the HAAL. Ask Hayward. 61 points!!! LAWDY!! LAWDY!! MY GAWD!!! Good coaches don’t get beat 51-0 & 61-7. Bowers has never been beat 61-7 by Hayward. Look it up this is our league. SL will win the HAAL. Circle the date October 28th on your calendar & holla at me after we put a 50 burger on the Dons. A 50 Burger with cheese.

to an untrained eye sugar looks like shit
a coward looks like a hero
bait looks like a meal
August 2nd, 2011 at 11:09 am
r u kidding me SL has been getting by on talent alone
they cant beat anyone with so so talent or any type of coaching look at the preseason record look at the post season record the only kids that comes back to sl thanking the coaches are the gubbers most kids cantwait2get the hell out of there running a 4.3 is a curse at sl u asshole effort is rewarded of talent
THEY STICK FULL GROWN COWARDS NEXT 2 WARRIORS AND EXPECT U 2 COMPENSATE WHEN THE WHOLE WORLD KNOWS THEKID CAN POSSIBLE GET THE JOB DONE ” effort doesntmake u a football player” i say again effort doesnt make u a footballplayer itmakes u in the way
August 2nd, 2011 at 11:57 am
I say again. Barnes’ Defense gave up a million points last year. 35 to Newark,34 to BOD,51 to RC,61 to Hayward, 27 to Ten,24 to CV and they had the returning defensive player of the year in McMurphy, along with Fogel,Porter, and Young. Barnes was the Defensive coordinator. You don’t address that fact because it makes your claim that Arroyo will win the HAAL this year sound retarded. SL is a program, Coach Bowers over Barnes every day of the week.
August 3rd, 2011 at 1:56 am
Sky Walker u r right Arroyo gave up alot of points with 1st time varsity players. And SL gave up 250+ yard rushing to Logan 25-0, so whats your point. Bel 38-7 200+ yards rushing, arroyo 25-16 1-off td 150+ yards rushing 0 passing yards 5 sacks, u beat 5-5 hayward team by 1point, bod 35-20 , MV 56-12 200+ rushing yards and 188 in the air .. and your point is …who runs SL def and off ? “lol
August 3rd, 2011 at 7:52 am
i just stated sl loses by 20 2 ARROYO AND30 2 ODOWD
#485
maybe u have no idea what good coaching is
but u will find out ***
arroyo wins by 20 o’dowd by 30
the wing-T dies this year
I THINK MOST POP WARNER TEAMS RUN WING-T
MAYBE ITS TIME 2 GROW UP 4 THE KIDS SAKE
August 4th, 2011 at 9:59 am
Chalktalk, How can Arroyo win the HAAL if Barnes is still running his “Bend, break, and bang out our pillowy a$$” defense? 61 points to a 5-5 Hayward team? Can I get a copy of his defense so that when things are slow around the office I can break it out and laugh my a$$ to tears?
August 5th, 2011 at 11:58 pm
my haal predictions:
1. hayward- they didnt look good at the scrimmage but getting better quick
2. Bishop O’Dowd- they have alot of talent and a very good coach the championship will be decided when they play hayward
3. San Leandro- always a factor in league but they are not what they used to be in the haal
4. Mt Eden- coach perenon will have those boys ready to play this season, they are TREMENDOUSLY better than past years
5. Castro Valley- could even finish higher, they do have alot more talent this year as they have transfers from other schools
6. Arroyo- They are not as good as they could be, has very good players on the team but the coaching isnt there
7. Tennyson- never really a factor in the haal, but who knows maybe they will surprise this year. however, i doubt it
August 7th, 2011 at 7:48 am
Sky Walker or should I say coach “lol” did Barnes upset you in any way. U seem to be very upset with the Arroyo football program or is it because there no longer talking about SL and your kids are leaving the team because of you and your Head Coach. Yes we all no and next year they will all be gone and you guys will return back to the bottom of the HAAL where you belong. No one never talked about Arroyo before now Sky Walker the Dons are all in your head. Just get your team right so when I come to the Arroyo vs SL game you are callng the right plays on O…
August 7th, 2011 at 11:22 am
HAAL is not a very good league…
The level of the athletes is great but the coaching is just horrible (not all, but in most cases)
Arroyo, Hayward, and San Lorenzo especially… any success in the last 5 years at these schools has been 100% talent related, they have won IN SPITE of their coaching, not because of it.
Barnes isnt nearly the coach he thinks he is.
August 7th, 2011 at 12:45 pm
“4. Mt Eden- coach Perenon will have those boys ready to play this season, they are TREMENDOUSLY better than past years”
Is Thompson no longer there? I find it hard to believe this to be true when people only mention Perenon. When people fail to mention Thompson it just leads me to believe that these claims are made based on hype because of what one person did at a private school in a city filled with talent..
August 7th, 2011 at 8:09 pm
Teehee, Thompson Is still there I failed to mention him. I say that about them because I have seen them at camps and they did very well against powerhouse teams such as encinal
August 7th, 2011 at 8:19 pm
ya i just like calling people out on the fact they fail to mention Thompson.
August 8th, 2011 at 8:38 pm
BREAKING NEWS!!!
I WENT TO MACK PRACITCE TODAY I SAW EX SAN LEANDRO PIRATES PLAYER PRACTICING FOR MACK.
HIS NAME IS HAROLD HALCOMB WOW MACK IS LOOKING GOOD THIS YEAR ..
SKY WALKER: WHAT ARE SAN LEANDRO GOING TO DO NOW??
ON PAPER HE WAS THE BEST PLAYER OVER THERE I KNOW BRAD BOWERS IS CRYING HIS HAAL CHANCES AWAY LOL
August 9th, 2011 at 2:58 am
Im bored so I looked something up …
SL vs BCS Teams 9-13 with 7 wins vs Castro Valley. And two wins came from 2005 teams …
So do they have coaching or is it just talent ?
Barnes is young and will learn each year as the Dons will improveve sleep on them and u already no the outcome..
August 10th, 2011 at 1:16 pm
Tennyson is looking good this year. They had a great summer playing alot of teams.
