Lockie commits to Oregon

More proof that the East Bay is quarterback central this year. Monte Vista signal-caller Jeff Lockie has orally committed to Oregon.

“I’ve been kind of eying it for a while. My brother goes there,” Lockie said. “The relationship with the coaches and the offensive setup was the right fit for me.”

Lockie checks in at 6-foot-2, 180 pounds and definitely has the wheels and arm strength to be the dual-threat quarterback that Oregon likes. He is rated as a 3-star recruit by Rivals.com and a 2-star by Scout.com. He’s also extremely smart, having carried a 4.0 GPA during his junior year.

He becomes the third incoming senior quarterback in the East Bay Athletic League to pledge to a big-time school, joining San Ramon Valley’s Zach Kline (Cal) and De La Salle’s Bart Houston (Wisconsin).

Lockie had an offer from San Diego State, but when Ducks quarterbacks coach Mark Helfrich gave the offer, the Mustangs leader knew which way he wanted to go.

And Lockie knows what’s going on at Oregon right now, saying that he did consider the current turmoil regarding football scout Willie Lyles and his relationship. He said he talked it over with his parents before making the committment.

“We’re not going to worry about that,” Lockie said. “ If that’s the place I want to be, then that’s the place I want to be.”

Lockie joins Whitney-Rocklin’s Jake Rodrigues as the Ducks’ 2012 quarterback commits.

Fremont has to be the favorite in the oal but what did the other teams look like bhigh arroyo & albany? Is berkeley gonna beat marin catholic at home? Albany gonna play everygame on the schedule? Will arroyo compete with the top teams in ncs d2 like concord pinole valley come playoff time? We all know there playing for 2nd place in the ebal & ncs d1 who cares i already read that book.

  • Former Quarterback

Damariay is one of the best kept secrets in the EBAL. He may also be a better defensive player than he is on offense. Maybe Livermore could shock some people this year. Coach Haubner is doing a great job

  • s1lverngreen

    Gades 10,

Cal and SRV push the Spartans this year. Year after year, despite win, loss records, these two squads seem to give the Spartans the most trouble. Common denominator: Physical play. I will eat crow if this does not happen again this year.

  • Prep Fan

I’m not sure that Demariay Drew is a secret, as he has been their best player for the last 2 years. The question is whether Haubner has enough other players to make a run at the playoffs this year. With preseason games vs. Northgate, Liberty and Dublin they could very well go 3-0 in the preseason. Then they would need 2 EBAL wins to be playoff eligible. Who do they have a chance to beat besides Granada? They do have a bye week before they play DLS :)

  • renegades10

S1lver, those would likely be teams to do it, but history doesn’t favor those two teams being the ones to push DLS as DLS’ closest games against league foes usually have come on the road and DLS gets both SRV and Cal at Owen Owens. @Cal 08 and 10, @SRV 10, @ MV 09. They also struggled on the road against Foothill in 09 and at AV in 08 despite winning by comfortable margins. Of course in 09 AV pushed them to the brink at Owen Owens and they did have a ten point win at Owen Owens against MV in 08 but if memory serves me correctly DLS was up 45-21 before MV scored two TD’s in the 4th quarter.

  • Oh boy

DLS’ ebal challenge will clearly be SRV if Kline can survive preseason and hasn’t checked out to Cal Berkeley by then.

OAL looks competitive! Fremont is the vegas favorite but Skyline returns talent, Tech is physical at RB/LB and Mack is keeping very quiet. Never trust the quiet ones. You know the saying “still waters run deep”

  • http://ibabuzz.com EBfootball

So we always talk about how Cal doesn’t recruit in the NCS/SJS/CCS/OAL. But what if they did? Where would they be now coming into the 2011 season. What should be Cal’s starting line up be of top products from Northern California? I’m talkin classes of 2006-2010.

    ps
I’m the original EBfootball… change your handle other dude.

  • Ebal1010

I find it funny that no one has mentioned the offensive line for either SRV and MV. Monte Vista lost Welter, Mustion, and Dreyer. SRV has no returning starters from the line. I would much rather have Lockie under center with a poor offensive line than Kline. Ive grown up with kline and he’s never been good under pressure. Since pop Warner he has been lousy in games. Zach Kline received his scholarship soly on 7-on-7 because of his form. Kline will never contribute for Cal. Also another Cameron, SRVs back up qb is not a D1 qb he has looked terrible in passing leagues so far. If you can’t have success when there is no pads than he won’t be successful this year. Neither Kline and camryn could start at any othrt position other than qb for SRV. Which I guess from ManDown’s opinion doesn’t make them D1 QBs. Lockie is a very good athlete which makes him the best qb with Bart Houston in the EBAL.

SRV will still be a very good team with athletes like Weiss, Tagliferri, and Miller but Kline’s funky personality could ruin the team. He is a jerk to a lot of the younger players and he really is a funky character that just says the right thing in interviews. MVs line really had a better spring than expected and I believe MV could give De La a decent game this year

  • KillerD

Mack is down this year, they are not the same level as their upper echelon teams of recent lore.

I wish the OAL games were on tv or IT live, very entertaining to watch

  • Chs101214

R10- Unlikely a D1 Pac12 junior commit is benched his senior year, and likewise being switched to another position. Thus, it’d be highly speculative to guess another position. Certainly there are instances of very capable athletes on both sides who happen to QB. Drew McAllister comes to mind immediately when SC soley picked him as a S even though he was standout EBAL QB his Jr/Sr years. I just don’t see it happening no matter the “combine standing” of the underclassman. If SRV has better support than ’10, his QB rating of 80-something easily ramps up this year. Other examples recently are Granada ’09 when their QB (Kearney) went down with a broken fibula as a S vs Cal on a very clean play. He was a big time hitter though. (He’s now at D2 National Champs Sonoma State as an OF.) I think Stancil AV ’09 could’ve played Corner anywhere in the Bay- he was that fast. But he was their offense, so rarely played D. I know Cal High’s was Frosh MVP at WLB.
SnG- Cal’s line wont ave 250# as they did last year, but being more mobile, the kids like to say, will be in more beast mode in ’11.
D Drew is good no doubt. For Cal, Alvarez had a great line but he had a knack for cat-like cuts and then he was gone. This year, two RB’s and 4 back- reminds me of Jr/Sr combos of Knowles/Anderson/Ward…

  • Bigeasy

I think the biggest question this year cal. They are the most interesting team to watch in my opinion. Will they build off of last year and go undefeated until dls again or will they revert back to pre-’10 where they were a average ebal team. We all know that dls will go undefeated and play for state with one or two close games against ebal opponents. MV and SRV will beat everyone they are suppose to beat and drop a game or two and the battle of Danville will decided who finishes higher in Ebal. Amador will be an average team again and Granada will be back in the basement. Livermore looks like they might make the playoffs but is a 5-5 season something to talk about for anyone but Livermore themselves. The other big question mark is who will foothill upset this year. They were down in talent last year and this year seems to be the same but their toughness always allows them to win a game they are not suppose to.

    projected finish:
    DLS
    MV
    SRV
    CAL
    FHS
    AVHS
    LHS
    GHS

  • Ebalfanatic

I dont know why everyone is leaving out granada this year, they have two returning all leaguers, Kearney and Amick. They also boast QB Mata, FS Farnaday, T Xavier. Also Kearney plays FB and averaged 6 yards a carry last year. With a stronger-bigger line this year you might not want to disregard them. If they can handle the pass rush, Mata and Amick will have no problem connecting.

  • Prep Fan

“Pre-’10″ Cal went to the NCS finals and tied for first in the EBAL in 2007, with their only league loss coming as a result of a missed PAT in the closing seconds. They beat league champs Pitt and James Logan soundly on the road in the playoffs. That was hardly an average team.

The ’08 team only lost to DLS by 7 and they were tied with 4 minutes to go. The ’05 team went 8-3. Pre-Sanchez the Cal teams were decidedly less than average, but they have been a solid and above average program since ’05.

  • Bigeasy

Prep Fan considering the EBAL is either the best or second best league in Northern California (depending upon how you compare them to the WCAL) being an average team in it is nothing to be embarrassed about. Their ’07 team is clearly something to get excited about. The ’08 team finished 7-5 and you cant judge a team on one game they almost won. And yes 8-3 is a very nice season. So during the five season run 05-09 they were a above average team in the ebal with one really good year. During that stretch they were 36-21, whereas SRV was 43-18 and MV was 43-16. So maybe the real question I am asking is whether they will stay at the top of Northern California Football or was last year just an anomaly.

  • Prep Fan

Compared to where Cal HS football was prior to ’05, the fact they were 36-21 over the next 5 years and 48-23 if you include last season is prety amazing. Especially with 5 of those 23 losses to DLS which included two of DLS closest games in the last 10 years vs. NorCal teams.

So since ’05 and using the records you listed above plus last season, Cal is 48-23, MV is 51-20, and SRV is 50-24. That all looks pretty close to me.

I had to laugh in looking at the 2011 Monte Vista schedule just now on MaxPreps. It has them listed as playing the Archer School for Girls on September 2nd. I don’t know if someone put that there as a joke, but I got a nice chuckle out of it. http://www.maxpreps.com/high-schools/HV9iIbPtqE-RWPa2sKBOLQ/monte-vista-mustangs/football/schedule.htm

Monte Vista is not playing Archer School for Girls. They are playing Castro Valley as their third non league game. I believe it is in the 2nd week before their bye.

  • Ebal1010

but im so glad you got a good chuckle about it Prep Fan. It sounds like everyone else got a kick out of it

  • Prep Fan

Of course they aren’t playing Archer School for Girls. The Archer Panthers may be tough in girls’ soccer, but I’m pretty sure they don’t even have a football team.

A lot of the teams schedules are messed up in MaxPreps right now, but how they made up a football schedule for Archer is beyond me.

  • Triton8

First of all, Sonoma State did not win the D2 National Championship in baseball this year.

Secondly, if Kline is ranked so high in the National QB rankings, then Tedford can hardly be ripped for grabbing him? However, if KillerD is even half right about the comparison to Riley….I’m not feeling like Cal has answered their QB problem. Tedford’s interest in a QB recruit is hardly a stamp or validity?

Still disappointed about Lloyd not even drawing interest from Tedford…..anyone heard anything about how he is doing at SoMiss?

  • mvalfan

Castro Valleys football team might as well be the Archer School for Girls

  • Chs101214

T8′s correct, and thanks for catching. Seawolves made it to Cary, NC and went 1-2 double format.

I was at the Marin Catholic Camp yesterday, with Pitt, Sacred Heart SF, and Alameda, St. Mary’s was a no show. Pitt looked very good this early, big, physical, strong and fast. Qb and Wr were solid, running game productive. But, MC was equally as productive , especially against Pitt. MC for a DIII has enough quality players to have one way players. This will be tough for smaller teams like Encinal, and other teams that play 2-way players. Alameda fell victim with only 25 at camp. Another day of camp today. Look forward to seeing Pitt v. MC again.

  • scoop

mval fan that was to funny ahahahhahahahahahhahahahhhahah!! post number 70!

  • KillerD

Who does Pitt play in their opener this year? Home or away?

Marin Catholic does a fine job, did not miss a beat when their head coach stepped down for a while

  • http://ibabuzz eagle12

Killer D, you’re right MC does do a fine job, very well coached and conditioned. Not sure of Pitt’s schedu;e, does anyone have knowledge of it ? What I saw yesterday was a very good Pitt team, strong and fast. The Qb had total control of his offense. Look for Pitt to make noise this season and improve greatly from last year. Oh , and MC starting Qb is on vacation, MC is running with they’re second team Qb, and he looked good also…

  • Pitt Grunt

    @Eagle12,

Thanks for the update. If, possible, could you provide an update of today’s camp? I would be curious to know if Pitt is wearing numbers. If so, who was carrying the load at RB?

    @KillerD,

Pitt opens at home against Foothill. Anyone know what offense Foothill will run this year? Are they still running that wing T offense?

  • http://ibabuzz eagle12

@ PITT Grunt, yes they’re wearing numbers, I’ll definately update todays camp. The Qb is # 13, and the big reciever is # 4, both were putting in work. I can’t remeber the rb’s # , I’ll have that today.

You can use the whole dls argument with any team in the ebal. Everyone has lost to them at least three times since they joined ebal if not more. By adding last years win loss totals to my numbers it does make it look a lot closer and with last season you can defiantly say they are one of the best in the area. The question is can they hold the form. If they win 8 or more games this year and finish in the top three of the ebal then yes you can say they are the real deal and will be for a while. On the other hand if they win 7 or less and finish 4th or lower then I think you have to say that last year was an anomaly and while they still have the potential to do it again they wont be considered a consistent elite program.

It will be interesting to see how Lockie does with McGovern gone, Turner gone, the Entire offensive line gone, and Dalis Bruce transferring schools and gone… who does he have?

eagle12 marin had guys going 1 way for the last 3yrs against encinal so whats different this year? the real question is who is gonna start for marin at qb? will pitt be in the ncs final eagle12?

  • http://Ibabuzz Eagle12

NFL , I wasn’t aware of that with MC , I was just comparing the 2 squads in terms of numbers. As for Pitt winning NCS ? They look solid but it’s early and I haven’t seen anyone else

    @ Pitt grunt , # ‘s 24,33, I saw at rb

  • Prep Fan

Bigeasy, even if Cal were to slip up this season and not win at least 8 games or finish in the top 3 of the EBAL, that doesn’t mean last year was an anomaly and that they shouldn’t be considered an elite program. They have now made it to the NCS championship game 2 of the last 4 seasons. Their frosh team had 1 loss last season to DLS and their JV team only lost 2 or 3 and they only lost to DLS by 2 points or so in the season finale.

There are certainly no guarantees as to what will happen, even for DLS, but with hard work and good team play this year’s Cal team has the opportunity to continue on the winning tradition that was started back in 2005.

  • SuperJack

MV will struggle again against common opponents. They have never played defense since the only “real” coach on the team is Bergman and he only can coach QB’s and receivers. Babcock is a joke and Bergman has no desire to play defense-just wants that ball back for his heralded offense. Craig has had best in class performance and cannot win the big games. Think about it, Nottingham, Ertz, Wilkerson, McGovern, Lababera and Welter who are all D1 players and he could not bring it. Who has six D1 players on their roster in any year in this league and is not able to win it? Bergman is anti parent, anti player and never wants to be bothered. He fields a squad of 35 player, 5 quit and 5 are hurt. They are burnt out by October and limp into the 2nd half of the season. I don’t know of a coach with a worse reputation in this league.

  • renegades10

In other news Michael Barton and Hardy Nickerson Jr. were both named to the Butkus Award watch list which goes to the top high school LB in the country. 51 players are on the watch list which will be trimmed down as the season goes on.

  • Pitt Grunt

This is why I HATE all of these camps. Pitt may have lost one of their QBs for the year at the Marin camp today. Word from one of the player’s parents was a broken leg. No, it was not Watson. It was the backup. Still, tough luck for that young man.

  • http://ibabuzz eagle12

Yes it’s unfortunate , he threw a 50 yd bomb for a td prior to his accident. That’s the second u=year in a row Pitt has lost someone to serious injury at that camp.

  • scoop

hardy nickerson? seriously? I am good athlethe but top 50 linebackers? who did the polictican there?

the other LB on the team, #44 last year, was better

yeah, he was, his last name was ward… I am REALLY SURPRISED

  • teeheee

ya but as you said.. Nickerson Jr. is SOLID.

  • SportFAN

YES… Nickerson Jr. is a LEGIT!

  • http://ibabuzz.com PERKIN

That is terrible. Gali should not go back to that camp. Its why coaches have to be smart about picking the right camp. You can’t win camps you can only lose if you get injured. Quick whistles may piss players off & fans who don’t know better but you won’t lose. This is pretty late in the summer too. Doubles are only a few weeks away why do a Contact Camp this late? Bad call especially after what happened last year.

  • scoop

yeah solid, not great and top 50 type of solid…. just an above average high school type of solid

  • s1lverngreen

    @ gades 10 and Chs,
Ref posts 55 and 60, I believe that Cal will be the no. 2 team in the EBAL, coach B has figured out the formula and stresses physicality with his teams. the same goes for SRV, (I just don’t think SRV is quiet consistent as Cal yet) Can’t figure out MV, where is MV alum? LY he provided unbiased objective insight into MV’s program. One last question for you gentlemen, what are the your 5 top preseason Bay Area games?

    DLS – Aquinas
Folsom – SRV (I am liking this one!)
    Pitt – Monte Vista
    Berkeley – Marin Catholic
    DLS – Bellairmane
Did the Pitt Granite Bay game fall through?

  • s1lverngreen

It could very well be that Nickerson and Barton end up at Cal together…It’s my understanding that Cal is on the top of Jr’s list…

  • scoop

I Am starting to loose a lot of respect for people saying he is THE real deal.. which makes me to believe a lot of you guys have never watched him, I am not hating on the kid, he is a good player, but he wasn’t even better then Terron ward on his team..To say he is a top 50 line backer in the nation is saying he could be the number one linebacker an any state… YEah right….

  • teeheee

I mean SOLID as in id love to have him on my team

  • Prep Fan

MV – Archer has to be at the top of that list, then DSL – Aquinas. Those all look like great matchups S1. Those have to be the top 5 games involving East Bay teams, although I’m sure there a few more that are compelling. What other marquee matchups are there to look forward to?

  • s1lverngreen

Scoop, Are you referring to Barton or Jr at BOD? I’ve watched Barton for the last 3 yrs and he’s the real deal…a 3 year varsity starter at DLS, that’s real…
