MV’s Ertz to miss rest of season

Talked to Monte Vista WR Shane Ertz today after hearing that he’ll miss the rest of the season due to suffering his second major concussion. Here’s what will run in tomorrow’s paper.

Standout Monte Vista High receiver Shane Ertz will miss the rest of the football season after suffering a concussion in a game against Pittsburg on Sept. 19.

Ertz, who said the concussion was the second major one of his career, got hit as he tried to make a catch over the middle in traffic. He said that while falling between two defenders, he took a knee to the head.

“I don’t really remember it. People told me I was laying there not moving for five minutes,” Ertz said. “I just remember feeling really freaked out, kind of like claustrophobic.”

The 6-foot-2, 200-pound senior said he had hoped to follow in the footsteps of his brother, Stanford tight end Zach Ertz, and play Division I college football. Doctors said that another hit like the one he sustained could result in brain damage, and the decision was made to end his season.

Ertz also said he feels lucky that it wasn’t worse, and doctors have told him that he may be able to play basketball in the winter.

Ertz had 11 catches for 164 yards in Monte Vista’s first three games of 2011. He had 10 catches for 231 yards and four touchdowns last season.

The Mustangs play at Granada on Friday in the East Bay Athletic League opener for both teams.

That is too bad. I hate to see anyone lose their senior year. At least he wasn’t severely injured, and may even be able to compete in hoops this year. I remember seeing a video replay of the hit, and he was indeed unintentionally kneed to the head when two Pitt defenders converged on him. He was a good player and he’ll be missed by the Mustangs this season.

Ditto on the news that he is fine but I think walking away from Football is the smart move. In final analysis, high football is just a game. All the best to you Mr Ertz.

I am sad to say that Tyler Amick (WR from Granada) is also out for the remainder of the season with a broken fibula that he sustained in their last preseason game against Skyline. Tyler was 2nd team all EBAL last year and already had 15 receptions for 201 yards and 3 TDs in 6 quarters of play this year. The Monte Vista / Granada matchup won’t be the same without Amick and Ertz on opposite sides of the ball tonight.
