We may be in the heart of football season, but the Powerade Fab 50 boys basketball rankings by ESPNHS have been released and reigning CIF Division I NorCal champion De La Salle is ranked No. 35 in the country. Here’s what the writeup has to say about the Spartans.

Coach Frank Allocco’s 2010-11 unit beat playoff teams more individually talented on its way to a Northern California Division I championship. Allocco, whose program has reached the regional final nine of the past 13 years, feels this team’s talent level is much higher. Eight lettermen return, including SF Elliott Pitts (6-5, Jr.), PG Amadi Udenyi (6-0, Sr.) and SG Jeremy Gunder (6-1, Jr.), all three of whom will earn college scholarships.

De La Salle is the only East Bay team in the rankings, but Archbishop Mitty-San Jose checks in at No. 20. The Monarchs won the CIF Division II state title last year and return big man Aaron Gordon, who is a pretty easy call as the best player in the Bay Area. Also, Findlay Prep — featuring Bishop O’Dowd and Salesian transplants Brandon Ashley and Dominic Artis — is ranked No. 8. Defending Division I state champion Mater Dei is ranked No. 6.
