East Bay Girls Volleyball Notes: Semifinals, Rankings, Standings

So who are the favorites?
In Division I, Heritage showed California that traveling to Brentwood and winning will not be easy, so San Ramon Valley has its hands full. However, the Wolves are firing on all cylinders right now and look like the best team in the East Bay once again.
Foothill, with a pair of wins over Monte Vista, should be favored, but don’t count out the Mustangs. This match will be very close. Serving, and serve-receive, will be the difference.
In Division II, Northgate and Las Lomas now have to take on the top two seeds. Both teams will have to play extremely well to win. Las Lomas has a ton of momentum right now, and will be a lot to handle for top-seeded Maria Carrillo in a rematch of the 2007 finals.
Northgate and Redwood will be close in every single game. If the Broncos make fewer mistakes, they will have the close games they need go their way.
In Division III, the only game featuring East Bay teams is a rematch of a 3-1 Campolindo win over Albany. Albany has a chance to jump into the upper echelon, but will have to do it against the best team in the area for the last two seasons.
In Division IV, Salesian looks to be on a roll and the Pride will be very hard to stop at this point. Both Berean, and St. Patrick-St. Vincent, will have to be very solid, serve the ball well and take advantage of opportunities to win on the road.
St. Joseph Notre Dame looks to take out a pair of big bad beasts in Division V, needing to get through University-San Francisco and Branson.
Rankings
Bishop O’Dowd and California bowing out really affected the rankings, as did Carondelet going down.
Monte Vista, for reaching the Division I semifinals, makes a significant jump, and needs to win to stay there. Albany, Salesian and Northgate are just a win away from jumping into the top 3-5 range. Look for St. Joseph Notre Dame to get a bump if it can get past University and then give Branson a match.

Thank you Matt for finally recognizing Las Lomas. They have been right on the cusp all season, and after a couple of defensive tweaks by Coach Changaris, appear to be peaking at the right time. Carondelet found out just how overpowering their front line can be…is Maria Carrillo next?

Is it bad that the season is already made for me personally because the Mariners beat BOD? (First BOD loss in the HAAL in forever, what a great goodbye to the Dragons)

Matt – Let’s see if you can predict ‘em all (or all but one) again in the NCS semi’s… Chris
November 15th, 2011 at 3:06 pm
I’m gonna go…
Foothill over MV in four, with three of the games being very, very close.
SRV over Heritage in three
Maria Carrillo over Las Lomas (possibly a five-gamer)
Redwood over Northgate in five
Campo over Albany
Salesian over Berean
Marin Catholic over St. Pat’s
I’m sensing a Branson v. University final in Division V

Matt – Not one upset?! Where’s the fun in that? I’m calling these upsets:
D2 – Las Lomas d. Maria Carrillo _and_ host Northgate d. Redwood setting up an all-Walnut Creek final. Finals will be biggest thing ever to happen to WC
D3 – Albany d. Campo. Albany’s height advantage prevails.
D4 – St. Pat’s over Marin Catholic. Just feelin’ this one…

Albany wins it 3-1. Where is the love for Albany … Mike?

Any word on Redwood Northgate?
November 16th, 2011 at 10:40 pm
Well I got only 1 of 4 upset picks right – only one right was Albany over Campo. Maybe I should leave the prognostication to Matt

Berean had a shot at Salesian and I thought for a moment that it might happen. As usual, they started the first game with that deer-in-the-headlights look. They took the second with an impressive performance, and just when it looked like they were clicking, something went horribly wrong with the ballhandling. They’re better than that but it just wasn’t their night. Great season though.
