Victor Pereira, Newark Memorial High’s star senior wrestler, has signed a national letter of intent with Cal Poly.
Pereira, who finished second in the 152-pound division at the 2011 California Interscholastic Federation state wrestling tournament, said that the university’s close proximity to home, its business and engineering programs, and its coaches were some of the reasons he chose the Mustangs. He took official visits to North Carolina State, Binghamton and Cal Poly before selecting the Mustangs.
“It was very hard, but looking at everything, it seemed like the right choice for me,” Pereira said.
Pereira said he plans to wrestle at 160-pounds at the end of this high school season. One of his early-season challenges will be the Walsh Ironman tournament in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio in December.
