Tagaloa officially commits to Cal

Salesian High senior Freddie Tagaloa, one of the top offensive line recruits on the West Coast, has orally committed to Cal, Pride coach Chad Nightingale confirmed Thursday.

The 6-foot-8, 300-pound Tagaloa had received scholarship offers from several Pac-12 schools, including Stanford, USC and Oregon. Recruiting website rivals.com ranked Tagaloa as the 28th-best offensive tackle in the country and the fifth-best in California. Tagaloa was not available for comment.

Cal has now received commitments from several of the East Bay’s top recruits this year, including San Ramon Valley quarterback Zach Kline, linebackers Michael Barton of De La Salle and Hardy Nickerson Jr. of Bishop O’Dowd and receiver Kenneth Walker of Kennedy-Richmond.

Salesian is preparing to play in the North Coast Section Division IV championship game Saturday against Ferndale. Salesian’s last elite recruit, running back Jahvid Best, committed to Cal in 2006.

I think you are wrong about the rankings. He is the 28th best player, not offensive tackle in the country. I also doubt if there are four offensive tackles in CA better than him.

    Piedmontfan:

According to rivals recruiting he is the 28th best OT this year, according to Scout he is the 39th best OT, and according ESPN he is the 37th best OT.

How is an oral commitment official? Not that I’m complaining about getting it.

I wonder if those rating services are evaluating how good the kids are at this point, or if they include the future potential for college and/or the pros. Freddie is a good tackle right now but there might be hundreds around the state and country who are better right now. The other OT on Salesian seems to be just as effective. Also, it’s hard to gauge, he’s almost always going up against players who are much smaller. But the potential for this kid is through the roof. He’s very smart and he’s in great shape, a young man in a big man’s body. No fat, doesn’t look as though he’s eating donuts and burgers very often. He’s got a good shot to be very successful.

Nothing is official Yoda until LOI is signed. I think by committing Freddie basically closed off his recruiting. Great quotes by Freddie in the Bearinsider. Brilliant kid, the Bears got themselves a top recruit! Cal is getting some nice commits. The new facilities help…

I wrote officially commits in reference to the fact that he was rumored all of last week to have committed, but in fact hadn’t committed yet. Now he has.
