East Bay Boys Basketball poll — 1/9
By Jimmy Durkin

Here’s our latest poll. We have a new No. 1 after De La Salle fell to Monte Vista. The Spartans’ otherwise strong resume (wins over Fairfax-Los Angeles and Lincoln-San Diego) kept De La Salle at No. 2. Newark Memorial moves up a spot after avenging an earlier loss to Jesuit, a team Bishop O’Dowd and McClymonds lost to. Monte Vista had to shoot up after its win over DLS and lands at No. 8. Dublin is the lone new team at No. 15.
| Team | Record | Points | Last week |
| 1. Salesian (6) | 11-2 | 90 | 2 |
| 2. De La Salle | 10-2 | 81 | 1 |
| 3. Newark Memorial | 10-4 | 80 | 4 |
| 4. Bishop O’Dowd | 8-4 | 73 | 3 |
| 5. McClymonds | 8-7 | 66 | 5 |
| 6. Deer Valley | 10-5 | 54 | t6 |
| 7. Castro Valley | 9-3 | 51 | 8 |
| 8. Monte Vista | 9-4 | 50 | 12 |
| 9. Campolindo | 11-2 | 47 | 9 |
| 10. San Leandro | 11-2 | 35 | t6 |
| 11. Freedom | 11-4 | 30 | 10 |
| 12. St. Joseph Notre Dame | 11-3 | 23 | 14 |
| 13. Liberty | 13-3 | 21 | 13 |
| 14. Heritage | 12-3 | 13 | 15 |
| 15. Dublin | 10-5 | 3 | NR |
Also receiving votes: College Park (10-6, 2 points), Granada (10-3, 1). The East Bay Prep Boys Basketball Poll is voted on by the prep sports staff of Bay Area News Group-East Bay. Records are as of Sunday.

Anyone seen Dublin, Heritage, and Liberty, how do they look? Never really seen any of them in the polls, maybe I am wrong but don’t recall.

New poll, same story.
Deer Valley is probably ranked too high. I would’ve moved Monte Vista up even more than 8…maybe 5. St Joe’s can beat SL easily and College Park is underrated. They’ve played top teams.

Would like to have seen Campolindo ahead of Monte Vista since MV lost to both Campo (and Heritage) in December; but it is early January……
January 10th, 2012 at 11:56 am
Campo was above MV last week. MV has won 5 of their last 6 crushing Bellarmine and beating DLS. They are playing well now. Also had nice lead on Heritage until Gallagher fouled out in the fourth and they fell apart.

I agree Salesian is the real deal and they no how to play in that small gym..

Brandonbeard, Dublin and College Park both have pretty good squads for D2. Other than the obvious Newark, they are probably the next 2 top NCS D2 teams in the East Bay. I haven’t seen Liberty, but they have nice wins over El Camino and Heritage.
Dublin has a stud in the versatile 6’4″ Joe McGlaston, and they compliment him with several other good perimeter players, and they have good height in the post with 6’8″ Eric Neilsen and 6’5″ Spencer Hollie. They beat Liberty by 10, but recently lost to a so-so Concord team. The best part of this team is that almost all their players who get minutes are just juniors including all of the above. Look for them to make some noise come NCS playoffs.
As for Heritage, they are a good team that has wins over Monte Vista & Granada, but they split with Cal and lost to Liberty. They have a 3-point gunner in 6’5″ Wayne Englestadt, some good guard play and a budding monster in the post with 6’6″ sophomore Shon Briggs, who will be making some huge noise in Brentwood over the next couple of years. They are in a tough league with DV, Freedom & Liberty, but they should hold their own.

This poll looks very accurate (except that Salesian was #2 last week and DLS was #1). The top 5 teams should all be favorites for section titles with DLS D1, Newark D2, BOD D3, Salesian D4 and Mack in the OAL. League play will help sort out some of the lower teams from each other in the coming weeks, but I look for those 5 to be there at the end playing in section championship games.

Nice win by Cal high tonight over Granada in a battle of 2-0 teams to move to 3-0 in EBAL play. Pagett was held to just 4 points. With MV’s loss to AV, Cal moves into sole possession of first place. DLS bounced back and held SRV to just 18 points tonight. The Wolves have really dropped off this year after a strong run the past few seasons and fall to 6-9 overall and 1-2 in EBAL play.

Salesian is too good. Dls is a big Choke. MITTY WILL WIN EASY.
January 12th, 2012 at 11:09 pm
Thanks prepfan! Haven’t been able to get out and see most of the teams like i usually do!
January 13th, 2012 at 7:55 pm
Only impressed with the top four on this list after that it is average basketball at best for the east bay rankings 5-15 is the worst its been in ten years
January 15th, 2012 at 3:30 pm
Monte Vista, and Castro Valley will need to drop out of the top-10. Deer Valley, San Leandro should move up. Either Skyline or Oakland Tech should make a snuff somewhere near top 15.
January 15th, 2012 at 6:52 pm
If you move MV & CV out of the top 10, who do you propose to put in their place? DV & SL are already in the top 10. MV beat #2 DLS and CV lost to #4 BOD by just a point. Skyline & Tech are both decent teams, but not top 10 material. #11 Freedom’s best win is College Park, and #12 SJ lost to MV earlier this year. I could see Campo moving ahead of MV since they beat them, but they are already in the top 10 as well. I’m looking forward to some good games at Haas tomorrow.
January 15th, 2012 at 8:21 pm
Thats my point after the top four it is average basketball for the east bay no one but newark DLS and BOD,salesian will do anything come playoff time and this bod team is no where near what they have been in the past
January 15th, 2012 at 10:03 pm
GHN, That is pretty much what I said in post #9 about those teams being the favorites to win their section titles. I don’t think the rankings are based on who will win in the playoffs, but who are the top 15+ teams in the area. Otherwise there would just be 5 teams in the rankings, the top team in each division.
And I was responding to EBAL’s post #15 about who to put in the top 10. If you pull out 2 teams, you need to put 2 other teams in

5. DV
6. SL
7. Mack
8. Freedom
9. MV
10. Campo
Will leave MV in.
The quality of play is definitely down. We were spoiled last year with the abundance of talented players. See a lot of undersized times that battle. MV will be dangerous come playoffs.
January 16th, 2012 at 9:10 am
Campolindo is playing well and is now at full strength with the end of football. Harold Abend (prepfeed.com) has Campo as the 5th ranked team in the East Bay, behind the big 4. Not one of their main players is taller than 6′-2″.
January 16th, 2012 at 10:52 am
EBAL, I could go along with that.
Redandblue, was Campo picked to come in last place in hoops this year too? They have a good team but will be challenged in DFAL play by Dublin & MM. A lot of ball to be played. That should be a good race.
January 16th, 2012 at 3:51 pm
Might just be a 2 horse race between Campolindo, no they weren’t picked for last place, and Dublin. Miramonte hasn’t been completely healthy and can’t seem to get Shastri, Anderson & Goodreault on the court at the same time; if they get healthy they can certainly compete. Big game between Campo @ Dublin a week from tonight; it will be interesting to see how well the Gaels use their size advantage against a much smaller Courgar team.
January 17th, 2012 at 12:41 pm
Too bad they weren’t picked for last in hoops. It really seemd to work well on the gridiron.
