De Anza High boys basketball player Rishard Williams suffered an apparent concussion during the Dons’ 73-46 loss to El Cerrito Friday night in the Alameda Contra Costa Athletic League.
Williams, a senior guard, hit his head on the court with 2:16 left in the first half.
He left the court on a stretcher and was taken to a nearby hospital, giving a thumb’s up to the crowd, according to El Cerrito assistant coach Raymond Thomas.
Thomas said Williams had some neck pain and was “a little dazed” but was able to move his extremities.

Hopefully he’ll be able to return as DA hoops is a beacon in their sports programs. Being transported means he’ll get follow up with a neurologist, and that assessment is critical to the decision on when/if return is wise. Here’s one Don hoping he recuperates fully.

That is a scary situation. I’m glad he is OK. That reminds me of an eerily similar incident last year where a Cal High player was upended while going for a rebound against DLS and landed head first on the court. He also ended up “OK” with just a hairline skull fracture but no permanent injuries. He was taken straight to the hospital and no one at the game knew how bad it was. Worst thing I’ve witnessed on a basketball court. One can only hope that these incidents are few and far between.
