East Bay boys basketball poll — 2/13

We’ve got the same 15 teams ranked and the same two also receiving votes, but quite a bit of shifting. Campolindo drops five spots after losing twice last week. St. Joseph Notre Dame is the benefactor of losses by the four teams previously ranked No. 5 through 8 and the Pilots crack the top 5. Liberty’s win over Deer Valley leads to all three BVAL teams being ranked in the top 10. Those teams really all are that close.

Team Record Points Last week
1. Salesian (6) 24-2 90 1
2. De La Salle 22-2 84 2
3. Newark Memorial 20-4 78 3
4. Bishop O’Dowd 19-5 72 4
5. St. Joseph Notre Dame 22-4 66 9
6. McClymonds 13-10 58 5
7. Deer Valley 17-7 56 6
8. Freedom 19-5 47 11
9. Liberty 19-5 41 13
10. San Leandro 19-5 35 12
11. Castro Valley 18-6 26 8
12. Campolindo 19-4 23 7
13. El Cerrito 18-7 21 14
14. Monte Vista 17-7 11 10
15. Granada 16-7 9 15

Also receiving votes: Skyline (15-8, 2 points), College Park (17-7, 1). The East Bay Prep Boys Basketball Poll is voted on by the prep sports staff of Bay Area News Group-East Bay. Records are as of Monday.

I still don’t see a quality win for Granada or Castro Valley yet they stay ranked. Castro has no quality wins all year gets blown out at home by BOD and loses to San Lorenzo and only drops three spots and Granada has no wins at all, is it just the fact that there are no other teams to move in the rankings

  • Granada has beat Skyline (which has wins over McClymonds and San Leandro) and Granada also just beat Monte Vista by about 15. Those are two pretty good wins. Remember, MV beat De La Salle.

The Castro Valley loss to San Lorenzo wasn’t great, but that’s the first loss CV has this year to a team that isn’t ranked (or of ranking caliber since they also lost to Serra). And CV has beaten a ranked team actually now because they have a win over Granada. The Trojans fell apart in the fourth quarter against O’Dowd, but it was a 5-point game entering the fourth. And in their last meeting, BOD hit a shot at the buzzer to win. They aren’t as good as last year’s CV team, but they are still quality. I’ve seen every top 15 team this year except Granada, and the Trojans definitely belong. Remember, part of the reason they didn’t drop as many spots for that SLZ loss is because a lot of ranked teams lost last week. Had Campo not dropped two games and Monte Vista not lost to Granada, CV would’ve likely landed at No. 13 or 14.

While Salesian, DLS, BOD & El Cerrito have wrapped up their league titles, there are still some compelling games tonight with league championship implications.

DFAL: Campo (8-2) hosts Dublin (7-3) tonight, then is at Miramonte (7-3) Thursday night. With wins in both games, they can win the title outright, but one loss could result in a shared title and the Cougs cominig in having lost their last 2 games.

DVAL: College Park (9-1) hosts Northgate (8-2) tonight with everything on the line. A win gives the Falcons the outright DVAL title, while a loss puts them in a tie, but the Broncos won the first meeting so they would be in a position to win the head to head tie breaker with 1 game remaining.

BVAL: Freedom (7-1) controls their own destiny with 2 huge games this week. They host Deer Valley (7-1) tonight, and play at Liberty (6-2) on Thursday. If they win both, they take the BVAL title outright. DV should be hungry after losing the last seoond shocker to Liberty on Friday.

BSAL: Salesian (12-0) is just 1 game ahead of St. Joes (11-1), but that league is done and those teams unfortunately only got to play each other in league one time this year, with the Pride pulling out a 58-55 victory to take the regular season title.

OAL: Mack (5-2) & Skyline (5-2) are tied for first with 3 games remaining, but do not play each other again in league, having split their 2 meetings.

  • Tom

@prep fan, Don’t count out Liberty if Freedom does beat DV tonight. The Lions narrowly fell to Freedom in OT in their first meeting this year and are playing their best ball all season right now.

  • Prep Fan,
BSAL isn’t done actually. They have league playoffs this week. Salesian and St. Joe’s are the top two seeds, so they got byes. Piedmont plays Encinal and St. Pat’s plays St. Mary’s tonight. Semis are Thursday and the championship game (likely Salesian-St. joe’s rematch) is Saturday at 8 p.m. at Albany. I’ll be at that.

I’ll also be at Freedom-Deer Valley tonight and Campo-Miramonte on Thursday. (In between, I’m filling in for Ben at Saint Mary’s-Loyola Marymount on Wednesday).

  • HighskoolBBALL

Deer Valley, Liberty, and Freedom are all great teams. all of them have tons of talent that can ball every game. All these team have at least 3-4 players that can ball at either D1 or D2 college teams. congrats to them and hopefully they all do well in the Tourney.

  • CSD

CSD won league championship over OMI. They are rolling with a double digit winning streak. Someone needs to give them some coverage! Very competitive team with size in the paint.

  • Jimmy Durkin

CSD does receive mention in tomorrow’s basketball notebook for winning the regular season title. Of course, the league playoffs this week will determine the coveted automatic NCS berth (and playoff hosting priorities).

  • Prep Fan

I know the BSAL has playoffs, and they should be fun, but the regular season is done.

I heard Campo edged Dublin by 2, CP beat NG, and Deer Valley bested Freedom tonight. I understand Dublin had more baskets, but Campo beat them again from the line. Andrews is a beast.

  • And Acalanes beat Miramonte, so Campo clinched the league title.

Deer Valley nearly blew a 21-point lead in the fourth. Freedom got to within six, but Deer Valley held them off. Deer Valley just needs to beat Pittsburg to clinch their first outright league title in school history.

  • Prep Fan

@Tom #4, I realize Liberty has been on fire lately, but unfortanately for the Lions, they really needed some help from Freedom last night to be in a position to share the BVAL title. Now they not only have to beat Freedom in the season’s finale, but must hope that Pitt can pull a huge upset over DV. Still, if they can beat Freedom, it will help their NCS seeding. Should be a great game between 2 teams fighting for 2nd place.

  • Monarch Pride

The regular season ends tonite for the Monarchs w/a vist from Dragons. Last time these 2 met was in Oakland and I heard the Monarchs competed w/them for most of the game but the Dragons had to much that night. I hope being at home this time will make the game is as entertaining as the game vs Hayward last week. Me and my daughter got to see these boys play and they showed so much heart and determination. To fall behind your rival by 23 at home with and to come all the way back forcing OT was amazing. Then in OT to pull away from Hayward for a 63-55 win was even better. It showed my daughter why HS sports and life were so much a like there were highs/lows and above all great sportsmanship. Who ever these Monarchs play in NCS better pack a lunch because they play 100mph for 4qtrs.

  • St. Mary’s gunned down by St. Pat’s in bsal playoffs. Not a surprise- the Bruins have given SM fits in the past. heard the Panthers had a big lead and lost it.
What has happened to manny nodar’s team?

  • St. Mary’s lost its three best players to transfer before this season (Andoh, Baral, Taylor). Hard to recover from losing that type of talent. Nodar will get them back on track, but this year’s team has very little experience.

Great game at Miramonte tonight. Campo came out on fire, was pressing and getting turnovers, and jumped out to a 28-12 first quarter lead. Then the Mats decided to fight back. Lead by Shastri and Goodrault, they got bac to within 9 at half, won each of the final 3 quarters and beat the Cougars by 8. Piatt getting into early foul trouble didn’t help matters. The Campo student section was chanting “This game’s over” when it was just 5-0, and then when they went up 16 after 1 it looked like they might have been right.

The Mats are ona roll and seem ready for the playoffs, but Campo seems to have lost their edge. Losing 3 of their last 4 games after starting 8-0, and barely hanging on to beat a shorthanded Dublin team by 2 on Tuesday that lost by 13 to Acalanes tonight. They’ll need to build some confidence in the first couple of NCS games or it could be a short postseason.

  • Have a newphew on that Miramonte team. Nice to see them come back on Campo- Campo rooting section chanting game is over in 1st quarter. Not good form.

I was at the ME/Odowd game and was impressed by the effort and intensity ME played with all game. The game was much closer than the 66-50 score. It was still a single digit game with 4min left but the front line and depth was just way to much for them to handle. It might be to much for a lot of high school teams to handle. Longrus is already headed to Wash. State and Daniel to Oregon for FB but the youngster #23 Rabb was probably the most impressive player on the floor last night. Wow legit 6’7″ maybe 6’8″ athletic and attacks the basket. Im looking forward to seeing and reading about this kid in the coming years as long as he stays home and doesnt bolt for a Prep school. I hope the double digit loses to SL, CV, and BOD dont hurt ME to much during the NCS selection process. Because in my opinion the only teams of that caliber are Newark, Dublin, College Park, and maybe Windsor. And i think Newark is better than all 3 top HAAL teams. Good luck boys MONARCH PRIDE

  • I was at the game, too. The game was way too close, but i understand that the coach has to get all his players ready for playoffs. Once he had the right personnel on the floor, it was a wrap. Whoever gets ME in the first round better hope it’s not a home game. They shoot very well in their gym. I looked at ME’s division and I think they wouldn’t have a problem with Dubin, they might with College Park and of course they will with Newark, but they could surprise everyone. Newark is just so well coached. I wish luck to all the HAAL teams in playoffs.

  • Dragon

ME has played tuff Stevonair Young has brought them excitment and SWAG. their shooters when hot are fun to watch// and i am equally impressed with Sharma… Odowd Has a way of keeping all games close… they were tied whith Sheldon the same they were with ME late in the game.
