Boys Soccer: Neto, Recap, Rankings, Standings, Stats
By Matt Smith
Monday, February 27th, 2012 at 8:17 am in Boys soccer.
It’s very sad that the boys high school soccer season is over in the North Coast Section, but it’s even sadder with the passing of a fine young man.
Neto Corona, who was the Bay Valley Athletic League offensive player of the year as a freshman after the 2009-2010 season, passed away after his battle with cancer. Corona had just turned 16 on Feb. 9, and had missed the past two seasons during his fight.
Known for his skill and his passion on the soccer field, he was even better known as a very nice kid and a wonderful human being. He will be missed in the East Bay soccer community.
A season to remember
The 2011-2012 season was a great season, and will be one to remember as the coverage and the passion for the sport grows in the East Bay. I feel very lucky to have been a part of it, and to have made so many great relationships with coaches, players, parents and fans.
It’s because of you guys that this soccer blog is as great as it is.
De La Salle’s four-peat is quite an accomplishment, and we’ll have to wait and see if anyone can knock them off next year. They should be formidable again. I feel like the usual suspects will challenge once again.
In Division II, another year may make YV even better as they will have a very bad taste in their mouth and could be hungry. These are my two favorites next year. Anyone else?
It saddens me that this is the last notebook, but I will post all-league stuff, and then All-East Bay stuff, in the near future.
Rankings
For the first time since I have been on the beat, the four Division I semifinalists are the top four ranked teams in the East Bay. The Division II finalists grab the next two spots and then the rankings fall into place from there.
De La Salle grabs the season ending top spot this year, after being No. 2 behind Campolindo last year.

@Matt,
Was fun this season.
You should start a club blog as everybody is starting back up this week. I am sure it will be hot and heavy at first but then calm down after the chest pounding.
Do a once a week include the girls. Results of games tournaments, thoughts and comments. Establish some basic Rules regarding blog manners and have at it. Persuade your bosses to let you go to Vegas for WCDA Tournament as a bonus for a season well done…all expenses of course. THANK YOU
Congratulations to the following De La Salle players who made ALL EBAL
MVP: Johnny Marcinkowski
1st Team: Evan Molineux
1st Team: Isaiah Dargan
1st Team: Andrew Konstantino
2nd Team: Damian Martinez
2nd Team: Conrad Rowling

Our deepest sympathies and prayers go out to the Corona family. Thank you to Matt Smith for letting us know and for doing such a fantastic job of promoting our guys and this fantastic sport. Congratulations to all the young men who worked so hard this season to represent their schools, communities and families.
The Monte Vista soccer community has immense gratitude to Matt Zahner and Jeff Kendall for the high standards they set forth for the MV soccer program. This year our team played with skill, speed, finesse, strength, and determination but mostly heart… and exceeded everyone’s expectations. The MV soccer mantra of family was pure and true for our 19 young men. The fact that they all are a bit blue and miss being together on the field is such a testament to their understanding of family. Our 8 seniors spoke last night at the program banquet with such heart-felt eloquence and represented their families so well. We’re grateful to Coach Z and Kendall for their incredible commitment to our young men!
And a huge congrats to the 6 All league EBAL players from Monte Vista! You made us proud and were so fun to watch for 26 games!

The sad and sobering news of Neto Corona’s death is another important reminder of what brought us all together on this blog. Despite differences of opinions, rivalries, and soccer politics, we are all here because of our the love for the beautiful game as it is played with such pure heart and commitment by our high school futballers. In a perfect world, we’d be discussing what would have been Neto’s amazing accomplishments on the pitch this season. I didn’t know Neto, but my prayers go out to his family, his teammates, and his friends. I’m going to give my player a big hug when he comes home tonight.
Matt – Thanks for providing a place that brings us all together. We all have so much more in common than we have differences.

What is consider the coach of the year? The coach that wins the championship?
The coach of the year should be someone who does a better job to help a program become better.
Both DLS and BOD coaches are good coaches.
Both of this coaches coach at a private schools were they don’t have to worry about kids making grades or having kids miss games cause they have to work to help their families. Not to mention that DLS has excellent assistant coaches. No matter what coach you use for this 2 schools the programs will always be successful as they prove they are always contenders for the title.
February 27th, 2012 at 5:32 pm
Dear Dval1…
It’s too bad you didn’t take a more objective approach. Your “anybody but BOD or DLS” approach is polarizing – anyone at BOD, DLS, or other private schools is going to be naturally inclined to disagree with you.
Imagine if you had posted something like: “When considering a candidate for coach of the year, there are many criteria that should be considered. Championships and win/loss record are just one factor.
A more important criteria is “What did they do to make their program better?” Another is “What challenges did they have to overcome in order to make their program better?”
Had you kept it positive and written something in that vein, it’s likey you would have influenced every reasonable person who reads this blog, regardless of their school affiliation.
February 27th, 2012 at 5:38 pm
@Matt,
Are you going to post all the various ALL league and MVP selections?
@Dval1 your logic is off base.. DLS has the same problems as everybody else..grades and discipline issues are dealt with swiftly maybe not as frequent or deep as at some public school programs , where you lose 4-5 players in a blink of an eye. And yes DLS also has to raise funds for each sports program. Bottom line these teams train hard and coaching is just one aspect of the big picture but they build that frame around the picture. Just so happens DLS has a 1st year head coach who took this team straight through league title and to a NCS title and BOD who fought their way through and made it with a coach who I believe has been with that program for 3 years. All deserving to be considered as coach of the year. Does the football coach at DLS get coach of the year every year? NO.

Also, usually stats are kept on MaxPreps if the coaches update it.
