The James Logan and Mission San Jose girls basketball teams are co-Mission Valley Athletic League champions after finishing the regular season with 11-1 league records tonight. But the squads will play a one-game playoff on Saturday to determine which one gets the league’s automatic bid into the North Coast Section playoffs. The game will occur at American High at 6 p.m.

The Freedom-Granada girls soccer game ended too late for press time on Wednesday night in Oakley. But I did get a chance to interview Falcons coach Paco Gonzalez in a darkened parking lot after his team’s thrilling 6-5 win in a shootout after a 2-2 draw in the first round of the NCS Division I playoffs.

The Ohlone College men’s and women’s basketball teams will be hosting a special event in addition to playing an important doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Renegades, on their “Coaches vs. Cancer” fundraiser day, have elected to “adopt” the Inciong family, and in particular their daughter Zoe, a sophomore at Logan High and a member of the Colts’ basketball and water polo teams. Zoe suffers from a rare form of cancer called Ewing’s Sarcoma.

We’ve got the same 15 teams ranked and the same two also receiving votes, but quite a bit of shifting. Campolindo drops five spots after losing twice last week. St. Joseph Notre Dame is the benefactor of losses by the four teams previously ranked No. 5 through 8 and the Pilots crack the top 5. Liberty’s win over Deer Valley leads to all three BVAL teams being ranked in the top 10. Those teams really all are that close.

San Ramon Valley High’s 7-2 rout of Granada in EBAL girls soccer on Tuesday, coupled with Monte Vista’s 1-1 draw against California, clinched at least a tie for the regular-season title for the Wolves (15-1-4, 9-1-3 ).
The Mustangs (12-0-8, 7-0-6), with 27 points, trail the Wolves by three points with one league game remaining. San Ramon Valley will host Monte Vista at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, needing either a draw or a victory to claim the outright league championship.

The James Logan High football team has finalized its 2012 schedule, during which the Colts will play as an independent.
Logan will open its season with a Week 0 home game against Reed of Sparks, Nev. Reed went 12-2 last season, losing to Bishop Gorman-Las Vegas in the Nevada Class 4A state championship game.
The other addition to the schedule is a Week 5 road game against Del Oro-Loomis. The Golden Eagles went 13-2 and were the Northern California representative to the California Interscholastic Federation Division II state championship bowl game and lost to Helix-La Mesa 35-24.

Minimal movement this week as 11 of the 15 teams occupy the same spots they did last week. St. Joseph Notre Dame and Monte Vista swapped at the 9 and 10 spots. The Mustangs do own a head-to-head win over the Pilots, but that was almost two months ago now and the nearly 30-point loss to De La Salle was enough to drop Monte Vista one spot. Dublin falls out of the poll and out of the voting completely after an 0-2 week. That moves El Cerrito up a spot and welcomes Granada into the poll. The Matadors own a win over Skyline, which is a big reason they get the edge over the Titans.
