Boys Soccer: Coaching Updates

I hope the club season is going well. I’m trying to familiarize myself with it. For now, I will keep this thread updated with high school coaching updates.

Julio Borge has stepped down at Antioch after seven seasons. The Panthers won the league title 2010, and made the playoffs in two of the last three seasons.

Shane Carney from Campolindo has decided to return for another season, which will be his fourth. Carney has made the playoffs in every season at Campo, and won the NCS Division II title last year.

Any news about Bill Cooper from Las Lomas? Is he coming back? I hope not.

  • soccerfan11

I do not understand all of the hate that is going on at Las Lomas. Bill Cooper is a great coach. He and those kids worked hard all season, and for some reason, the season did not go as planned. Placing the blame on the coach is ridiculous. Teams have bad years all of the time, that does not mean they should be fired. If that were the case, we would have about 30 new coaches every year. Finally, I think it is horrible for people to be wishing for others to lose their jobs.

  • CasualObserver

Matt -what is your take on LL? The 2010 team was positioned to go deep into NCS. In fact they were the only team to beat eventual champ Dublin twice. They ran into the Camp buzzsaw ( a keeper named Mangels) in NCS and got knocked out but that LL team had only 4 seniors.Granted 3 ended up first team DFAL but they had a lot of quality kids returning for 2011 and for this year. Talent wise LL matches up with any team in DFAL or D2 so what is the issue? Is it the coach, the parents, an everybody plays mentality of rec soccer?

  • Turftoespain

    @Soccerfan,
LL program needs a major change top to bottom.
Just about any player or parent will tell you that.
Laundry does not need to be aired on the blog ..but something needs to happen or the program will not recover.

  • http://aol BigJoe

    OK, time to stop soccer.
It’s now track and swim time. Lot’s of talented eastbay atheletes- Jimmy start running some stories on these 2 sports.

  • Soccer king

    @BigJoe soccer never stops

  • Turftoespain

Soccer never ends..Club is just getting started.
Matt… gotta keep it going lots of good stuff.

  • Tintin

Soccerfan11 – Not sure how many games of LL you went to. Also did you see any practices? Parents who been there will tell you a lot. Bill had no positive energy or encouragement for the players on the sideline. Half of the time he almost lay flat on the bench with his hands an legs crossed. Players are out of his camp. I guess Turftoespain hit it on the head – LL soccer program needs to be changed.

DFC 95 boy’s were looking good this weekend at the 13th Diablo Cup. As they worked out the kinks and squeaks to get ready for Las Vegas. Edgar Damian was just plain fun to watch and Konstatnio in goal kept two clean sheet games. Mustang Hotspurs went down to a very inspired Walnut Creek Legends and also to DFC 95′s total dominating game.

For all results go to link below:

Saw the Legends95 game against the Hotspurs..they were relentless and with only a couple available subs. every player pushed it for the entire game and to score in that last minute of play was a deserving finish to a well played game and the 2-1 win. Legends has a nice mix of local players from Campo, Alhambra, Northgate, De La Salle, Acalanes and Las Lomas. They are coached by the former USF star and former Nigerian National player Godwin Odiye…who also coaches at College Prep HS in Oakland. WELL DONE

  • Shinguard

Yes Legends had a solid weekend of games with a wins vs SF Seals & Hotspurs and a 2-0 loss to DFC 95. Legends were weakened by the flu and lingering injuries from HS ball they only were able to rotate a couple of subs. The substitute keeper is a young freshmen from Concord High who was guarding that goal with total abandon all weekend. Regarding Sundays morning game with DFC, Legends gave a tactical fight and a couple of close opportunities at DFC 95 but with 95′s 4&6 man rotation legs and energy were at a premium for the Legends. DFC 95 ball possession game is played very very well and you can see why they are ranked #2 in the Country.

D1 Derricke Brown at De La Salle
D2 Greg Rubendall at Bishop O’Dowd
Both great guys and very good coaches and two great team stories.

  • Turftoespain

@TinTin..LL something needs to happen to get the turn-around happening. This is one time that players and parents need to step-up and speak-up.

  • Shinguard

@Matt..you should take a Trip to Vegas with DFC 95 and scope out some of the Tournaments that are happening..This Summer is the Davis Showcase..and Santa Clara Sporting and Mustang Stampede all local top premier tournaments..Do some out in the field reports during club season. Hang with a variety of age groups but most of your local HS kids are playing U16 and U17.
All of the clubs will be finalizing teams by end of April after try-outs. This will give you Soccer 24-7 till Nov when HS starts back up.

The new U17 boy’s will be looking for 1-2 Keepers and a full 18 man roster. and looks like they will be in NorCal RAL league. Worth a look with Coach Godwin Odiye as the boss.

  • anon

Rogue- thanks for the WCSC tryout post…I was going to give the information. Heard Godwin isn’t coming back to WCSC, not sure if that’s just a rumor?

  • Juan Pito

I have heard from multiple sources De La Salle will be leaving EBAL next season. Is this just talk or is this true?

  • concrete17

    Juan Pito posted:
“I have heard from multiple sources De La Salle will be leaving EBAL next season. Is this just talk or is this true?”

Word is that based on the Pac-12′s recent showing in both the BCS Bowl series and especially in the NCAA Big Dance that the Pac-12 Commisioner is putting out feelers to see if several of NorCal’s top high school programs would be interested in participating in a 2 year trial program competing at the college level. Again based on recent showings by many of the Pac-12 teams such participation may help elevate this Conference’s standings with its eastern and midwestern counterparts. Not sure which schools including DLS may have been contacted but then what do I know since tomorrow I have to pour 150′ of curb & gutter………….weather permitting.

  • Rogue Warrior

Depends on the new crop of recruited players. Sparty jet and soccer coaches currently in Europe during youth trade and free agency draft. :)
No such talk this year re EBAL…but they may enter EPL

  • Rogue Warrior

@19 Anon.. all indicators say he is staying but in club u never really know for sure till new season starts

  • Shinguard

Creekers are an all-right outfit..They need to get access to all weather field ie. Las Lomas like DFC has CVHS and YV which is a big help in getting extra friendly’s in when trainings are missed because of rain. They also need to go into RAL with older age groups U14-U18 and crank up intensity level.

  • http://aol BigJoe

Voice of Reason will be the new commisioner of the restructured Pac-12 with the addition of DeLa.
Tuition for the new players will be 100 % financed and they will get jobs as tow-truck drivers in Berkeley, especially during CAL games.
Concrete, can ya get them some jobs layin’ pipe and cement?

  • Rogue Warrior

Heard it was a Fantastic evening at Spartans Soccer Banquet..Class act all-around, memorable evening in honer of graduating seniors.

    Everybody,
We have to schedule all the All-East Bay teams to run on Wednesdays, when we have the appropriate amount of space in the paper to run them. We had a ton of NorCal basketball games yesterday, so today’s paper was full. I believe we are scheduled to start running All-East Bay next week and I believe soccer is first up.

  • Turftoespain

  • Rougue Warrior

Tough deal on DFC 95 they have dominated WCDA play all this past year, league and the big tournament wins. Heard a couple key players did not play or were not able to go. Sounds like road trip from hell..lots of money, bad weather, poor results and a long trip home. Hope all bay area teams can salvage out some good games today.
