Boys Volleyball: League Favorites, Rankings, Standings

This week, let’s break down who the league favorites are.

This league has traditionally been Alameda’s, and based on early season results, I will stick with the Hornets. Though I think De Anza might close the gap a bit this year, much like it did a couple of seasons ago.

A very balanced league this year, with four teams that look to be able to compete with Bentley, College Prep, Head-Royce and Valley Christian all appearing to be solid. Valley Christian seems to be the favorite right now, with College Prep a very close No. 2.

St. Patrick-St. Vincent. In a landslide.

Deer Valley should be the clearcut favorite in this league, with Heritage looking to be the top challenger.

Campolindo has a strong grip on this league once again, but it appears Dougherty Valley is closing in on the Cougars. This Tuesday will be a big test.

There appears to be a change in the guard this year with College Park being the favorite, but Northgate won’t go down quietly, as evidenced by a five-game battle with the Falcons. This league title should come down to the next time the two teams play.

De La Salle has not dropped off much from last year’s incredible team as it has beat two very solid teams in three games, so far in league play. Almost every match will be a test as Amador Valley, Foothill, California, Monte Vista and San Ramon Valley can present a tough challenge for the Spartans.

A two-horse race that features two of the best teams in the area as Mission San Jose and Logan appear to be the teams who will battle it out for the league title. However, this league is getting so much better. Moreau Catholic, Kennedy and American all appear to be playoff type teams at this point.

The top five stay the same. College Park and Logan each nudge up a spot, while San Ramon Valley, California and Valley Christian reshuffle themselves based on head-to-head matchups.
Dougherty Valley and Moreau Catholic settle in where they seem they should be, while Foothill probably should not have had such a harsh drop last week, but I feel like I have a good grasp on where to rank them now.
I can say this about St. Patrick-St. Vincent… If I could rank them, they’d be No. 2 easily.

2. Deer Valley (9-1)

Berkeley just opened at 2-0 in league and they’ve got a new coach and the most size and talent in the ACCAL. From what I understand they had a rough transition in preseason but they blew out El Cerrito and Richmond easily.

  • Matt Smith

Thanks for the info, Jeffrey! I haven’t been able to get anything on Berkeley.
If you hear more as the season goes, keep me posted.

Why not add SPSV to your rankings? All their games, tournements and league play are with schools that you recognize on your list. I’ve seen the argument about Drakes recognition during the NCS last year, but they play the majority of their games outside of your ranking list. It is tough enough for these boys to work hard at their game against larger D2 and D1 and have relative success without recognition. How can you legitimize your ranking leaving out a team that has played aginst your ranked teams and put them as a footnote?
“Covering Alameda County and Contra Costa County and BEYOND”

  • xfactor

Re: R Deleon. I understand your points but every year, Matt has to go through and explain why “Beyond” teams are not part of his ranking. Matt is doing what his boss is allowing him to. Maybe you could write to the head of CCCT and ask them to expand Matt’s roles and responsibilities with more $$$. If you want to see where SPSV ranks in NCS, go to North Coast Volleyball. It covers all NCS teams. Also does Valejo has their own newspaper? Maybe you could write to them and have them do the ranking for teams in the area.

  • Matt Smith

@R Deleon- Xfactor is 100 percent right. It’s not up to me.

  • Jeffrey

Hey Matt, Berkeley just took down De Anza in 5 and their top two players have yet to play, or so I’ve heard.

  • Jeffrey

Hey Matt, no problem, Berkeley just took down De Anza in 5 without their top two players. Apparently they’ve got someone who’s been injured or ineligible or something, and they’re picking up a foreign exchange student from Europe who should be very good.

  • Matt Smith

Sounds like a three-team race in the ACCAL.

  • Jeffrey

I’d say Alameda, then Berkeley, and then everyone else. Alameda should take it pretty easily though, Berkeley might steal a match but I doubt they’d win a tiebreaker.
