Just catching word that the East Bay Athletic League has changed the start times of its varsity games to 4:00. It has been confirmed to me that the EBAL Athletic Directors have approved this change, by vote.

Hold your horses…. Coaches are not in agreement of time change… Will hurt with the quality of referee the league will see.

Parents not happy at all with decision..contact your schools appropriate AD and voice your opinion, especially working parents with seniors, parent volunteers, sort of difficult to make games at 4pm. Plus you reduce the hold over attendance for the Varsity game. This is not well thought out.

Word is that EBAL athletic directors voted for the change, a few were not on board with the proposal.
What was the logic in making that change.??? The typical two day a week game schedule at 4pm almost eliminates working parents from attending games. This is sad for parents of juniors and seniors as these players high school time comes to a close. Parents speak up to your schools AD and coach…This is a bad idea.

someone list who voted for/against this so we can see who the insane AD’s are.
May 12th, 2012 at 8:31 am
I hope they turtle shell this bad idea. Tim also has a good point regarding the referee pool… many of the better ref’s have jobs also…in this day and with the shaky jobs market would you want to repeatedly try to cut out early from work. Hopefully they rethink this and come back to reality. Varsity is show time…it needs the prime time slot. The players have earned it.

welcome to the world of high school baseball and softball families.
May 12th, 2012 at 11:21 am
It is official and confirmed. 4:00 next season.
May 12th, 2012 at 12:15 pm
Yeah, it’s not like the baseball & softball parents haven’t already been dealing with the 4:00 starting times. What is the logic behind this? Are they trying to save money by not playing under the lights? It also means the kids are having to get out of class early to get to the games in time to warm up for the 4:00 starts.
May 12th, 2012 at 4:29 pm
It is difficult to compare baseball to soccer. There are very few HS that have lights for baseball.

Matt – You say this is official and confirmed. But WHY is the question many of would like answered. Hey, maybe they’ll do it for football too! And varsity basketball!

Email or call your schools AD…It is never to late to take a stance. Speak up or roll-over.
This seems worth a fight.

This is a terrible idea why would the committee do this. When are JV games going to be played now
May 13th, 2012 at 7:11 am
Expect many schools/coaches to go ahead and change individual games back to 6pm. Livermore, Granada, Carondelet/DLS, SRV, MV likely to hold home games at 6pm.
May 13th, 2012 at 7:13 am
If 4pm kickoff….expect a lot of coaching changes and lower quality referees.
May 13th, 2012 at 7:31 pm
@9 – I’m not comparing baseball to soccer. I was just agreeing with the prior post that both baseball and softball parents have already had to deal with the 4:00 starts. That doesn’t mean soccer should have to as well, but that the parents in those sports have had to adjust in order to watch their kids play.
I’d like to know just what the rationale was for this change. Do any other soccer leagues in the East Bay have 4:00 starts?
May 13th, 2012 at 9:19 pm
Some teams do..early 3-3:30 kick-offs as they have no lights..but all of the EBAL fields have lights.
May 13th, 2012 at 9:24 pm
JV in EBAL are set to Kick-off at 6pm now. I think Mr Spock is having a hard time figuring the logic in this whole matter. As Spock would say this is illogical.:)
May 13th, 2012 at 9:26 pm
Does that mean a Vulcan mind-meld is in order?
May 14th, 2012 at 10:48 am
A little history on this decision: originally decided at a principals meeting with NO input from any EBAL coaches because they thought varsity games would be played in better weather! Coaches learned of the decision and voiced concern. AD’s met last week and voted (again some coaches still not consulted).
May 14th, 2012 at 1:16 pm
That still means the majority of EBAL AD’s voted for this plan…. Amazing.
Somebody post the votes- would love to see who voted for it.
May 14th, 2012 at 4:13 pm
The feedback I’m getting from coaches is that they do not like the change.
May 14th, 2012 at 6:08 pm
I have spoken to a variety of parents from EBAL 3 dif school and outside of EBAL..it’s like WTF…very unhappy all say the same…it makes no sense. Weather?? last year was mild…but the JV teams will play at 6…again the reasoning is very weak. Soccer is fan based…Varsity is your showcase.
May 14th, 2012 at 6:17 pm
Sounds like the coaches should have had some input. Once again the Politburo of the Central Committee has screwed the pooch.
May 17th, 2012 at 3:00 pm
Nice…now there will only be 18 fans instead of 35…wait maybe there will be students that hang around and watch after 5th period. That should get the number up to 23 fans.
May 17th, 2012 at 3:04 pm
Unless parents contact your schools AD and or Principal, now, the small window of opportunity for a change back will close. So don’t complain next winter when Cal High and San Ramon have a 4pm game and you can’t make it.
May 21st, 2012 at 9:52 pm
This makes no sense. After sitting through many afternoon games, no where near the same atmosphere. I just can’t see these SRV-De La Salle, MV-Cal games being at 4pm. Very disappointed with this. Maybe change to a Wednesday-Friday schedule will increase attendance.
