San Leandro track star headed to Washington State

San Leandro High star sprinter Andre McBride has signed a letter-of-intent with Washington State.
McBride placed in two events in last weekend’s California Interscholastic Federation state championships. He was second in the 100 meters with a time of 10.60 (wind-aided) and placed sixth in the 200 (21.62 wind-aided). His fastest wind-legal times in those events this season were 10.52 and 21.21.
McBride said that he signed with Washington State on May 24.
“I went up there and I met some of the athletes and I also did some research,” McBride said. “I was looking at the times of the athletes, what they were running.”
In early May, McBride made a verbal commitment to Cal. But a visit to Washington State on May 13 helped change his mind, along with a better scholarship offer.
“I won’t have that many distractions, and I wanted to go out of state, so it seemed like a good fit,” McBride said.
He also considered Sacramento State before finally choosing the Cougars. McBride also played football at San Leandro, but he said that he will just be competing in track in Pullman.
