Holy Names High’s Sasha Wallace has been named the Gatorade California Girls Track & Field Athlete of the Year.
The 5 foot, 8 1/2 inch junior won both the 100-meter hurdles and the girls triple jump at the California Interscholastic Federation state track and field championships on June 2. She has the top wind-legal time in the nation in the 100 hurdles (13.33 seconds) and led the nation in the girls triple jump through the state championships with a mark of 42 feet, 4 3/4 inches (wind-legal), according to the DyeStat Elite 100 high school rankings.
“I’m just happy to hear the news and I’m excited to hear about what’s next in the process,” Wallace said. “I’m just so excited that I can be a part of a great group of athletes who have been nominated for this award.”
Wallace trains on the East Oakland Youth Development Center club team with Ashton Purvis, who was named Gatorade National Girls Track & Field Athlete of the Year in 2010. Wallace is now a finalist for this year’s national award.
