Still no respect for Deer Valley?

  2. Prep Fan Says:

A lot of changes this week with Pitt, Foothill and Amador Valley all going down to ranked teams. Every EBAL team but Granada is in the top 15, and they are just 1 vote short. Granada is scheduled to play Skyline this week and will likely move to 3-0. Can Skyline even field a team? Livermore will have their hands full travelling to face a 2-0 Consumnes Oaks squad.

2 Big games to watch involving ranked teams are #2 Logan at #10 SRV, and #9 MV at # 6 Pitt. It shapes up as a must win game for 0-2 SRV and a revenge game for Logan as SRV ended their perfect season in Union City last year. The MV-Pitt game is always entertaining with 2 teams having contrasting styles of play.

  3. Outsider Says:

I know that California has not proven itself playing teams like Washington in the preseason, but after beating a good Pittsburg team that was ranked number 3 in last week’s polls, I would expect they would have moved higher. Is there any direct evidence to place Concord and Campolindo higher? Wouldn’t a good Division 1 team usually beat a good team from a lower division? I think Logan would give California a game and it could go either way, but I don’t think they would have a definite win.

  4. Outsider Says:

Come on..I just went to Maxpreps and Looked at who Concord and Campolindo played. Concord beat Kennedy and amador Valley. California used to play Kennedy in the preseason and would kill them. Amador Valley is now ranked eleventh on the poll. Campolindo beat Moreau who barely beat Piedmont. Piedmont is not very good. So why the high rankings?

  5. VC Fan Says:

Valley Christian dublin in 2-0 and beat better team that both Salesian and El Cerrio the past couple of week. Salesian almost go beat by Middletown Last week 7-3. On Calpreps and Max preps Valley Christian Dublin has a higer ranking than El Cerrio.
School Record Rating Offense Defense Margin
    El Cerrito (CA) 2-0 16.7 53 7 46
    Valley Christian (Dublin, CA) 2-0 18.8 38.5 12 26.5
    Salesian (Richmond, CA) 2-0 30.4 23 4.5 18.5
    Pinole Valley (Pinole, CA) 1-1 -4.6 29.5 35 -5.5
    Berean Christian 1-1 -1.8 12 19.5 -7.5
    St. Patrick/St. Vincent 0-2 -12.6 10.5 27 -16.5
    St. Mary’s (Albany, CA) 0-1 -2.9 14 47 -33

  6. Chris Says:

Why is Livermore ranked. They have played Liberty and Hayward. Granada is better then them.

  7. Pride Baller Says:

VC Fan, Valley Christian won’t be ranked ahead of Salesian until it actually beats Salesian. That being said, our ranking is a mirage, leftover from the past several seasons, I’m surprised the CC writers who actually pay attention to roster turnover would rate the Pride so high. This could be your year finally.

  8. EB JC Guy Says:

Amador Valley ranked 3 spots below Freedom despite head-to-head victory??? Cal would destroy Concord or Campo. Concord close win over Amador is impressive, but Cal would probably beat Amador by 2-3 scores. Deer Valley would crush the bottom 4 teams on that list.

  9. eastbaysportsbuff Says:

EC is overrated. Talented kids year after year fall short. No discipline. Their preseason is suspect. I’ll give them Campolindo, that’s a challenge, where once again discipline will be in Campo’s favor. Close game last year, but that was last year. EC will never make it out of the first round of playoffs. Rock, stone, whatever….

  10. LHS fan Says:

Why should Granada be higher then Livermore. They played American and going to get another win on a forfit from Skyline.

  12. I see you Says:

    GEORGE MANLEY,

WHY WOULD YOU PICK MINCO IDAHO OVER MCCLYMONDS???

  13. Itsabob Says:

Pitt needs to drop. Cal goes up.
Spartans will prevail, discipline with execution will allow DLS to dominate the game.

  14. John_quin Says:

Why would an 0-2 team even be ranked? Is it strength of schedule or the assumption that this team is good because of their league and unfortunate circumstance that they lost two in a row. Wouldn’t it be easier to wait for this team to win before you rank them at all. Is it an EBAL bias similar to the east coast bias in professional sports among the columnist writers. We have seen this before in the other sports and EBAL usually get the higher seeds thus home field advantage in the playoffs. Has anyone else noticed this? I have seen this trend year after year. Yes the undefeated teams deserve the ranking but to give credit when they don’t deserve it is absurd.

  15. Outsider Says:

Post #12. I think that there are a couple of reasons why SRV is still in the rankings. SRV was expected to be the number two team in EBAL and maybe even the east bay this year so they are living off a certain amount of hype, and we all know that hype is king. Their two losses were to teams that have good reputations in the past and are from outside of the east bay so are hard to find common opponents.

I don’t think there is an EBAL bias going into the playoffs. On the contrary, many times a team in another league gets the home field advantage because they are the league champs in a weaker league, when there might be two or three EBAL teams that would have been champs in the same league.

  16. FB Guru Says:

The press writers poll is meaningless and will not be used to determine who wins NCS championships this year or who gets to play for those championships. With the diversity in schools in NCS, especially by size (Logan – 4221, Stellar Prep – 64), it is ridicuious to try and put out a ranking. But it does give us something to talk about until Friday.

  17. MtEdenHomer Says:

John_quin, Everybody notices it. Most of us have just given up fighting.

  18. The Ghost Says:

The ranking process is always built with bias and there is no reason to believe that our little East Bay Poll will have a bias towards the larger schools. EBAL Teams are year over year the teams to beat throughout the NCS play-offs.

That said, I think the SRV Ranking is not appropriate. They need to win before getting any level of respect. Clearly someone over at SRV thinks they would be a team to beat this fall with the scheduling they put in place. I give them credit for taking on three tough opponents in Pre-Season.

EBAL will be a great title race w/out De La Salle! Foothill, SRV, MV, Cal, Amador will all battle and it could go fall many different ways … my prediction based on two games is:

1 – Foothill … offense is explosive, defense will be solid
2 – Cal – running attack effective (boring). Tough D.
3 – MV – nice balance with Chang and Zamora. Bergman smart coach who knows how to win with lesser talent
4 – SRV – Tough team but losing swag with tough pre-season and Birse is inconsistent. Slow overall team speed … only explosive offensive threat is De La Pena.
5 – Amador – Lucky win over Freedom. Small team that will only beat Livermore and Granada in EBAL season.
6 – Livermore – More competitive but one-dimensional offense will be stopped in EBAL play.
7 – Granada – Not enough talent to win in EBAL.

  19. s1lverngreen Says:

George, I would not sleep on Mullen..I would expect a closer store on this game. DLS wins by 2 scores would be my prediction. All of your other picks are solid. The Cal/Logan game will be a good one…war is a good word to describe it, for sure!

  20. Tri-City Dude Says:

Does anyone know who does these rankings? Is it people like Jimmy, Ben, and Stephanie? Beacuse if it is, I sort of lost some respet for them for creating these rankings. They usually do a good job, but I’m not a big fan of SRV being ranked. Hopefully, we can get their perspectives on this.

  21. Outsider Says:

Post # 19. SRV is playing Logan. Cal will not see Logan until the playoffs. Playoffs!!!

  22. Outsider Says:

Post #18. Amador Valley barely beat Freedom so it could be a lucky win. But Freedom beat Foothill easily so I cannot see how Foothill can be ranked #1 in EBAL if Amador Valley is #5.

  23. Prep Fan Says:

Mullen managed just 14 points in their only game thus far this year, a 14-13 win over an 0-2 team. Regardless of how good that 0-2 team might be, it is hard to imagine them having a better defense than DLS. Playing at home with what is by all accounts going to be one of their best defenses ever, I don’t see DLS giving up more than 1 score.

  24. Just a fan Says:

I agree with the El Cerrito comment. They are indisciplined and immature. They are the same first round and out, lose to campolindo team from a year ago. No leadership and to much individualism… Coach Kahn is victim of to much talent. He has to many I guys. But he will win his first out right title this year… It will be short lived because he will be a spectator for round two of the play offs.. I won’t watch them again until campo… “Go Jets”

  25. George Manley Says:

I See You….Minco is a bunch of Farm boys with speed, size and displine….McClymonds will score against Minco, but I don’t think it will be enough…this will be my Sat. project to see all four games..And see eight teams style of football…

  26. Just a fan Says:

Undisciplined not indisciplined… I phone mistake

  27. Just a fan Says:

I agree with EBSB… El Cerrito is overrated.. I was at there game last Friday and the have talent at the skill spots, like always the line is suspect… They are the same team from a year ago.. They lack discipline and leadership.. They will however give Coach Kahn his first out right league title (has a shared title with B high). Prediction: campolindo 31 EC 7..

  28. ManDown Says:

    1. De La Salle- Dual threat QB makes this team even more dangerious.
    2. James Logan- Long is a beast! This is the best team they have had in a while.
    3. Concord- Hanging on to this spot by a thread! I like them in D-2 this season.
    4. California- TOUGH! Whats the RBs name? He’s a good one
    5. Pittsburg- The talent is there but for some reason they can’t put it together. Should be 2nd.
    6. Campolindo- Won’t stay here for long. They could be in trouble in 2 weeks against EC.
    7. Bishop O’Dowd- Dangerious team with talent. Not as big this year but should win league and will be in this season D-3 semis.
    8. Freedom- Won’t stay here long. Without QB and Daniles theyre nothing.
    9. Monte Vista- Great start for them
    10. Foothill- Should have a good season.
    11. El Cerrito- I hope they don’t blow it this season. EC is loaded with D-1 talent.
    12. San Ramon Valley- Slow start.
    13. Amador Valley- Had there chance last weeks to make a statement. Blew it!
    14. McClymonds- Almost had BOD. Too many mistakes cost them.
    15. Encinal- Will be off the list within the next 2 weeks. Talent is way down and will be lucky to finish 6-4 or 5-5.

  29. MtEdenHomer Says:

Say what you will about Campo playing against inferior competition the past couple of weeks, but those guys flat out execute. They play the game the right way. I’m eager to see how they do in the weeks to come.

  30. The Ghost Says:

    Outsider (Post #22)
Freedom’s victory was far from easy and could have very easily gone Foothill’s direction. Only down one score most of the game and some incredible indiviual plays by Mayes and Daniels from Freedom enable them the win. Foothill has a good squad and went into week 2 with a little hangover from the lopsided victory over Novato.

Foothill’s game this week vs. Las Lomas will be a big indicator on the quality of Foothill. My prediction is Foothill 35 Las Lomos 21

  31. Outsider Says:

Post #30. A win against Las Lomas will not be much to brag about.

  32. renegades10 Says:

I think SRV’s ranking is just fine. They played Buhach Colony and Folsom. Should teams be punished for seeking tougher schedules? And honestly how many of the teams ranked below SRV right now would you pick to win even one of those games? Given the same schedule they would also have an 0-2 record. If they lose to Logan, I bet they fall right out of the rankings.

  33. Lonewolf Says:

Mullen if you check the history of this past year..they have nothing to lose but all to gain. Mullen good be riding high on the spirt train. Spartans could be in for a fight to the finish.
But if De La Salle plays a relatively mistake free and fully focused game and takes it to Mullen you could see a 49-10 final. Mullen players are in good shape and are coming down to sea level..should hang all 4qtrs with no fade. Bottom line get a ticket to see a great game. My call is De La Salle 42 Mullen 17

  34. HAAL Fan Says:

  35. N-Ya Says:

Campo escaped last year vs EC in a hard hitting affair. EC was the only team last year to hold Campo to under 16pts besides the loss they suffered in the state game. EC may be undiscipline, but they are fun to watch!!! The greatest show on grass or turf!!!

  36. John_quin Says:

So what I’ve heard is people justify SRV rankings based on hype and strength of schedule. We understand that preseason predictions is speculative and DLS is the exception based on history, but obviously its one persons opinion. Once the season starts a win is a win regardless of school size and until they lose or in SRV case win rankings should be based on record not speculation. I think NCS takes record and rankings into consideration when establishing seeding and this hurts everyone else that isn’t EBAL.

  37. John_quin Says:

Before everybody in EBAL gets riled up. The point is I would like to see the smaller schools get recognition even if it is short lived.

  38. Prep Fan Says:

The NCS sure dropped the last season, and they pretty much ignored the BANG rankings , EBAL teams, Pitt & Freedom.. So soon we forget all the “upsets” that took place last year with seeds 2, 3 & 4 not even winning a game despite playing at home. I’m still scratching my head over those seedlings. I’ll take the BANG writers’ rankings any day, even when they looked right past a solid Cal team this year in their preseason predictions.

  39. renegades10 Says:

I don’t believe that the East Bay poll is taken into account for NCS seedings. Look at the committee’s decisions last year with some of the seedings regarding that. It’s record and strength of schedule (usually). The sportswriters in general feel that SRV is a better team than Livermore, Salesian etc… and has just lost some close games to two very, very good teams from out of the section that likely would have done the same or worse to the teams below them.

  40. junior Says:

These east bay polls are the classic debate of: how much of your ranking is based on would team A beat team B? That is what is partially holding up SRV. The EBAL is the dominate D1 league in the area.

That being said, 3 of the top 10 teams are not D1. Teams that keep winning will move up.

  41. GAUCHOFAN Says:

I’m reading lots about El Cerrito and only one comment has been remotely positive. I agree with the “best show on grass or turf” statement, as the talent on this squad is profound. Say what you will about the youth of the team (immature, I-players, etc.), the coaching staff works hard year-round in order to ensure a winning program, and more importantly, turn young student athletes into men. I’m thinking EC makes state playoffs with a stunning win over Campo to shut up all the haters and naysayers.

  42. vic Says:

Does anyone who’s actually seen anything on mullen know what kind of formations they run on O/Defense??

  43. BigDog Says:

if it’s a tight gane or a blowout, anyway you look at it, Mullen’s going to have their hands full.
Vitale, Hooper, Hutch, Moffit, Tauti and now Williams are the real meal deal. These guys could have helped Cal vs. Nevada last week. Bye the way, how’s ex- DeLa Barton doing at Cal? How about Wynn, Blake Renauld and Ward?

  44. Chris/GHS Says:

LHS Fan: Because Granada also beat a pretty good Heritage squad. American is a tougher opponent then Hayward. But Skyline has to forfeit its whole season. Livermore should be just outside the top 15. They do have a good QB in Zach McPherson

  45. Chris/GHS Says:

    Predictions for EBAL this week:
    James Logan 35 SRV 24
Pittsburg 28 Monte Vista 14-think MV doesnt have much enough talent to beat PITT
Foothill 24 Las Lomas 10-Foothill has a good recruit in FB/LB Griffith Gates that has interest in many good FBS schools
Amador Valley 35 Dublin 17-AV has a great QB in Kyle Moreno who has committed to Brown. AV should win EBAL or possibly Foothill
California 56 Castro Valley 10-Cal’s running game is maybe the best in EBAL
Cosumnes Oaks 28 Livermore 24-Livermore has a good QB in Mcpherson and RB in Hernandez but experience might hurt down the stretch.
Granada 49 Skyline 7-Skyline will probably have to forfeit though. But Granada has a good o-lind and good FB in Granados, good RB’s in Soltis and Richards-hurt though and good receivers in Williams and Davis, good QB Offill

  46. junior Says:

Mullen runs a 4-3 defense. They have 2 D1 LB’s and an outstanding DE who might have some offers too.

On offense they either run a spread (most of the time) or an I formation with a TE. The head coach has a history of being pass heavy. The Mullen QB has a great arm. RB’s are average.

  47. Redandblue2 Says:

Last year Campolindo was never higher than #6 in the EB Poll during the regular season, always ranked lower than SRV, Cal, Logan, and even Encinal. It wasn’t until the final ranking after the State Bowl Games that Campo ascended to #2 behind DLS.

I would be the first to admit that those D1 teams were rightly positioned higher than Campo based on the general superiority of D1 teams compared to smaller schools. However, I don’t think anyone would argue that Campo rightly deserved the #2 spot in the final poll after the run they had in the playoffs, defeating BOD, CN & MC in consecutive weeks.

Campo’s high ranking this early season is certainly due in part to the season they had last year and also because they return QB Brett Stephens and much of the OL. They have filled in the rest of the starters from a 10-0 JV team. There was certainly no surprise in defeating D4 teams Moreau & SPSV. However, the next two games against the 2011 D3 CCS champs Sacred Heart Cathedral and El Cerrito will tell the story as to whether they deserve their current #4 ranking.

  48. spectator2012 Says:

dls has average rb’s also. they get those yardage through their dominant o-line. dls rb’s should be getting 1k yds each season guaranteed with that o-line. dls o-line is just amazingly fast. as soon as the ball is snapped, the o-line is already up on the lb’s blocking them. the line continues to block down field too.

  49. BigJoe Says:

I wouldn’t call Lucas Dunne and Terron Ward average running backs. Both had over 2000 yds their senior season and both performed very well and ran over SoCal defenses at state!
Vitale had 6 tds against highly touted SRV in the NCS playoff last year.
DJ Williams and the Callen boys were not average running backs, either was Siemon.
These guys ran over and around people, their 40 yd. dash times were superior to a better than average HS running back, and they can BLOCK and knock you on your ass.

  50. BigJoe Says:

Oh, forgot Maurice Jones Drew, he wasn’t chopped liver either.

  51. BigJoe Says:

Don’t forget Willie Glasper and Jackie Bates- both played some running back at DeLa.

  52. dudleydawson Says:

gauchofan slow down homie ncs d3 is loaded.im rooting for you guys but take it easy long way to go slz & newark not the best of teams.

  53. Itsabob Says:

Re EBAL League Champion: The team who is second under De La Salle is Champion. Whats wrong with that picture?? “Americans play to win all of the time. I wouldn’t give a hoot in hell for a man who lost and laughed. That’s why Americans have never lost nor will ever lose a war; for the very idea of losing is hateful to an American.” General George Patton.
Lets all cheer for the team that takes a Championship by committee. Frankly I would be embarrassed to hold up the EBAL plaque as it was not earned. Hard to believe that a group of Whiners & Wiener’s ( a small sausage )get to dictate a most ridiculous policy.

“…. These guys could have helped Cal vs. Nevada last week. Bye the way, how’s ex- DeLa Barton doing at Cal? How about Wynn, Blake Renauld and Ward?…”

Don’t forget about Albert Rosette (’09 I think) had a pretty good game for the Wolfpack on defense.

  57. EB JC Guy Says:

Post #44: Heritage is a solid opponent that Granada beat, but American is not better than Hayward. American’s struggles to put away Arroyo by 2 scores, an Arroyo team with 17-18 players, shows they are not very good. That being said, I think those two Livermore schools are pretty even this year.

  58. C/O98 Says:

Damn George you really see Mt. Eden as 3 touchdown underdogs? I’ve seen both teams play this year and I just don’t see that kinda blowout coming.

  59. Bodizapha Says:

Another year and yet another pre-season prediction from the “experts”, that had California High School ranked 12th in the EBAL. And SRV ranked 2nd? Come on now…

In case you haven’t been paying attention so far this season, Cal High is the real deal.

They have one of the best running backs in the league, working behind a huge O-line and a bruising fullback. Although they are a run first team, they proved last week against Pittsburg, that they can air it out as well.

Their defense is very strong up front, good overall team speed, with a much improved secondary. This is a defense that plays well together and is extremely well coached.

Only time will tell, but my money will be on Cal this season. I don’t always root for the underdog, but when the underdog is underrated, it couldn’t be easier.

  60. Prep Fan Says:

Cal was actually ranked 15th in the preseason predictions from the BANG writers and they weren’t even in the top 25 in the Chronicle. The Chron now has them at #15, and acknowledges they should have been ranked in the preseason. A lot of football to be played to determine how good of a team the Grizz really is this year, but beating Pitt was a nice win for sure.

I’ve seen where Sweeney is quoted as saying this is one of his best Foothill teams in years. I kind of think Bilecci must have undersold Cal to the media to keep under the radar, especially with the number of returning players and a JV team that went 9-1 last season. It matters not though, as the games are won on the field and not in the media. Win, and you will move up in the polls.

  61. HAAL Fan Says:

    55. Nfl

its not the 1st time that you mention b league coaches wanting to play down and it probably wont be the last. i think i speak for most people LET IT GO

  62. The Ghost Says:

Prep Fan … couldn’t agree more with you on your post. Everything comes down to how things play out on the football field. The more game film that is available over the coming weeks the more impact quality coaching will play in the 2012 season.

Good coaches know how to develop/showcase their strengths and mitigate their weaknesses … both offensively and defensively!

  63. FNL680 Says:

Cal deservedly moved up with their Pitt W. Pitt consistently plays like a top EBAL team. As Prep Fan attests, how teams get through EBAL- as is with the Grizz- dictates up and down movement. Unlike last year when MV and SRV had D1 Qb’s (and the records to match) and Granada and Livermore were “on the edge” spoilers every week, the Grizz have a clear path to week 10 and another even-year packed house at Berger if…. If their defense holds. In ’10 they gave up 7 pts or less EIGHT times. In ’11, that dropped to zero. Johnson is in the discussion with Olito Thompson as an elite RB.

  64. renegades10 Says:

I said way back in the summer I thought Cal would be the best team in the EBAL not named DLS due to the fact that there younger levels have had outstanding results recently. I was a little surprised as to how underrated they were by the polls coming into this season.

  65. New2this Says:

@ Pitt Grunt — you have alot of insight to certain programs you blog about. Especially Pitt are you a Parent? Coach? or just a fan? What’s your football background.

  66. spectator2012 Says:

drew and ward are great rb’s, they are the exceptions. dunne had a beast of a line, oh yea did he play rb in college – not. he’s playing rugby, everybody knows it was the line that got him those yardages. other’s after that are nothing but average. no matter who you put back there, that rb should be getting at least 1k each season. i’m just saying…

  67. The Voice Says:

I’m telling you guys right now. Pittsburg is going THRASH Monte Vista!!! The Pirates have made all the adjustments to the defense and will run all over the Mustangs.
MV is nowhere near as physical as Cal High and Pitt has alot to prove. The Pirates will mow the lawn at Northern California’s finest venue Pirates Stadium.

Also Pirate fans please get there early. Against Clayton, Pitt ran back the Opening kickoff and there was at least 200 fans lined up at the ticket booth. Another sell-out expected. Pitt by at least 20 guaranteed!!

  69. stuck in spokane Says:

MV doesn’t play defense, it’ll come down to whether Pitt can out score them. I think they can, too.

  70. BigDog Says:

Monte Vista needs a thrashing. More to come on them.

  71. BigJoe Says:

spect- what about Walsh? Dunne’s sport is rugby. The California rugby team is # 1 in the country and difficult to make. Dunne ran over players when he was running for DeLa. He ran over the SoCal defense at state. Line or not, when you run away from people and then run over them that’s a very good running back. Dunne always finished plays and bounced up for the next one. I remember at state he carried like 8 times in a row.

  72. Freedom Fan Says:

Alot of ebal bias according to this ranking. This isn’t even close. Your telling me Livermore is better then Deer Valley? Come on now. This isnt close.

  73. Freedom Fan Says:

Pittsburg will need defensive stops.. Alot of 3 and outs for Monte Vista. for them to win

  74. BigJoe Says:

Lucas Dunne had 2034 yds and 40 TDS for DeLa his senior yr- a school record for TDS. In the state game in the mud against # 4 Servite he had 28-242 and several tds.
Lad said he was one of the best to come out of DeLa. He stepped up. His team went 14-0. I don’t care if you got the 49er line blocking for you- his biggest games were against top ranked opponents.

  75. Outsider Says:

Dunne went 20 for 188 and had three touchdowns in the EBAL title game against California in the 2010 season when Cal gave DLS a scare. If you look at the stats, he kept them in that game offensively.

  76. Bodizapha Says:

I couldn’t agree more with The Voice on his prediction of the Pitt / MV game this Friday night.

Lockett will shred MV this week and I think the MV offense will find out just how physical the Pitt defense really is. I don’t see a shootout here… I see a blowout!

    Pittsburg 41 Monte Vista 13

  77. Outsider Says:

Pitt will need to contain the MV pass across the middle. If they do, they will win. MV will not like Pitts running game.

  78. spectator2012 Says:

all i’m saying is the dls line is always good. you think dunne would have been able to do that playing for a different team? he would do good, but not that great. the line made it happen for him a lot.

  79. spectator2012 Says:

let’s see if freedom’s defense shows up this friday. so far they have not shown up to play in the last 2 games. defense is giving up an average of 28pts per game. offense needs to outscore the opponent to win. they won’t win league that way, and cannot advance to the playoffs with giving up so much points.

  80. Prep Fan Says:

Anyone think SRV will beat Logan? It has the makings of a great game, with Logan looking to take down the team that ended their undefeated dream season last year. I would have been inclined to take Logan, but with SRV 0-2 and their backs up against the wall, they may want it even more than Logan. Plus SRV is at home.

MaxPreps still has SRV in their NorCal top 25 at #24, despite the 0-2 start. Logan is #7. Cal High, as is the trend this year, is nowhere to be found yet. They stated that “Logan impressed in a preseason scrimmage against De La Salle.” Maybe they have film footage??

  81. George Manley Says:

#58..C/098…Smoking this stuff may have blurred my mine….We will see what the how come is…it may be a tight game….

  82. spectator2012 Says:

wow, never knew you can get ranked based on scrimmage. what’s next how a team trains over the off-season?

i do believe logan will defeat srv. logan has too much speed and athletes for srv to handle. logan by at least 2 tds.

    my bval predictions

deer valley 35 college park 7 (dv will make a statement)
heritage 21 windsor 14 – could go either way (heritage needs this one bad, if they don’t win this one, it can be a 0-10 season)
freedom 28 franklin 35 – could go either way
    liberty 21 hayward 14
    antioch 28 merced 10
    pittsburg 35 monte vista 21

  83. FNL680 Says:

Jack Clark of Cal Rugby is the Bob Ladoceur of college sports. An outrageous 26 out of 31 NCAA championships. Dunne carried Sparta in ’10. His low center of gravity a la MJD was perfect for the mud in Carson. Rugby returns to the Olympics as 7′s starting in Rio in ’16, and that’s why Cal (plus the dropping of the sport, then reinstatement) did not play D1 rugby 15′s this year in the College Premiere League, and is focused on 7′s. Dunne is standard issue for a 7′s Winger, strong- fast- and size is less of a need than with 15′s where forwards are critical. Cal always had alums on the Rugby Union World Cup 15′s team and expect the same for the Olympics.

  84. Bodizapha Says:

I don’t think that there is even a small chance that SRV will beat Logan tomorrow night.

SRV won’t be able to contain a very fast and athletic offense and they will have to contend with a defense that is gaining confidence each week. I think SRV will fall behind early and will once again, have to rely on the pass.

Although I agree that SRV’s back is up against the wall, I just think that Logan has too much talent. SRV being at home will help, but in the end, I don’t see this one being close.

Maybe after SRV loses this week, they will actually be forced to finally win at least one game before being ranked.

  85. Junior Says:

How did Dunnes stature benefit him in the mud?

  86. Prep Fan Says:

Short, fast, slippery, and could turn on a dime. Less player to grab. I could see where that might be helpful on a wet or muddy field.

  87. monarch86 Says:

Pittt thrashing MV, really? Lets see if they can contain the running back – high scoring game. SRV soft again this year but their coach gets kids recruited unlike Cal coach, wonder why…. Cal has 3 Of top 6 Ebal runnning backs but defense suspect

  88. Junior Says:

Dunne making people miss had nothing to do with his stature. The field conditions had nothing to do with what he did to Servite. Anyone that was at that game saw that the field held up very well. Players were not slipping. The playing surface did not give anyone an advantage.

If I didn’t know better, I would think there are some of those wussy, excuse making Socal fans around here.

  89. Prep Fan Says:

Nothing to do with SoCal, and no I wasn’t at the game. Just answering your question as it did not appear you understood FNL’s comment about how having a low center of gravity might help in wet conditions. It’s also quite helpful in dry conditions. Certainly not a slight on the kid. Lighten up.

  90. Oh Boy Says:

What happens if SRV does win vs Logan? And Monte Vista beats Pitt? Would that be a strong defense of the EBAL as the premier league?

  91. WAC Man Says:

WACC Week 3 Games (calpreps ratings)

    Foothill Division

    Lincoln-Stockton 44 Berkeley 7
=Berkeley’s drop from top D-Is is complete.

    Valley Christian 34 Bishop O’Dowd 20
=Dragon defense is down from last year.

    Cal 38 Castro Valley 14
= CV is not ready for Grizzly attack

    Encinal 33 Rodriguez 6
= Encinal numbers may be down but their speed is not.

    Liberty 42 Hayward 14
= Hayward free fall began last week and picks up speed from here.

    Bellarmine 32 San Leandro 13
    - A state finalist, is not what the doctor ordered. SL will be taken behind the old woodshed.

    Shoreline Division
    Northgate 20 Alameda 13
Northgate will grind out a win,but the Hornets will keep it close.

    Concord 34 Arroyo 0
Olita Thompson will be held to 180 yards & 4 TDs by the concord coaching staff as they sit him down before halftime.

    Moreau 20 Mt.Eden 14
Mt.Eden’s 2 wins (Albany 17-7 & Richmond 17-8),Moreau is a cream puff too with a just little more pudding.
    than Mt.Eden.

    Piedmont 31 Albany 13
Piedmont’s offense will be the difference.

Newark Memorial 55 San Lorenzo 6
At what time in the game will the running clock be started?

    Lowell 20 Tennyson 14
Tennyson had trouble with Albany. So I can’t see a win here.

  92. Junior Says:

Never said it was a slight on the kid. Low center of gravity does not equal running better on a wet field. Slippery? Does he have scales for skin? That is uninformed.

Dunne’s pad level, quickness, discipline to not only hit the hole hard but stay north/south, the discipline to limit his cuts, vision, conditioning, strength of upper and lower body, heart, and tremendous balance are why Dunne excelled at RB and especially vs Servite. All players must play in the same field conditions. To suggest one team or player had an advantage over another in Carson that weekend is way off.

    1. De La Salle 2-0 (NCS D1, Freelance)
    2. Elk Grove 2-0 (SJS D2, Delta Valley)

    8. James Logan 2-0 (NCS D1, Freelance)
    9. Vacaville 1-0 (SJS D2, Monticello Empire)
    10. Pleasant Grove 1-1 (SJS D1, Delta River)
    11. Del Oro 0-2 (SJS D2, Sierra Foothill)
    12. Serra(San Mateo) 1-0 (CCS ?, West Catholic)
    13. Granite Bay 0-2 (SJS D1, Sierra Foothill)
    14. California(San Ramon) 2-0 (NCS D1, Eastbay)
    15. Bellarmine (San Jose) 0-1 (CCS ?, West Catholic)
    16. Concord 2-0 (NCS D2, Diablo Valley)
    17. St. Mary’s(Stockton) 2-0 (SJS D2, Tri-City)
    18. Grant Union 1-1 (SJS D1or2, Delta Valley)
    19. Monte Vista(Danville) 2-0 (NCS D1, Eastbay)
    20. Freedom 1-1 (NCS D1, Bay Valley)
    21. St.Ignacius 0-1 (CCS ?, West Catholic)
    22. Archbishop Mitty 1-0 (CCS ?, West Catholic)
    23. Foothill(Palo Cedro) 1-0 (NS D1, Eastern)
    24. Buhach Colony 2-0 (SJS D2, CentralCaliforniaConf.)
    25. Pittsburg 1-1 (NCS D1, Bay Valley)

?: Since CCS does not determine the eligible teams for its Open Division playoffs until the regular season is completed, teams that appear (at this point)
to probably be eligible for the Open will not have a playoff division shown.

NorCal Game of Week 2: Marin Catholic at Vacaville (live TV on Comcast Hometown Network cable104 at 7:30 Sept.7)
Although there probably aren’t any Cal Bowl playoff implications from the outcome of this game, it means a lot to SJS vs. NCS enthusiasts for bragging rights. Even though I have MC ranked 2 slots ahead of the Bulldogs, Vacaville’s 35-27 road win over Valley Christian(San Jose) seemed more impressive than the Wildcats struggling 28-21 home win over SI last Saturday. Vacaville’s speedy secondary and LB corps along with their grass/dirt field does not enhance Jared Goff and his receiving corps’ passing game. I think MC will have trouble with the Bulldog’s wing T, especially on the road on that field. Neither do the Wildcats seem to be clicking on all 12 of their cylinders yet.
    Vacaville with a close win.

  98. Pawn Star Says:

    C/098-

Haven’t seen Moreaufan on here in while. I have seen both of Moreau’s games this year. They are definately putting up points. The loss to Piedmont was disappointing, 3 or 4 missed extra points and allowing an 80 yard punt return was the difference. Moreau is a young team especially on the O-Line. I haven’t seen Mt. Eden play, so I can only judge by the box scores. Both Albany and Richmond are not usually very good. Mt. Eden has been scouting Moreau for weeks and even showed up to the MCHS scrimage against St. Mary’s. I think it will be close but since Moreau is at home I think they will win.

  99. panther4 Says:

The argument about De La’s running backs and line is stupid. Everyone on De La Salle is good, that’s why they always win.

  100. Mr. Han Says:

    TheSchoolmarm,

    18. Grant Union 1-1 (SJS D1or2, Delta Valley)
    21. St.Ignacius 0-1 (CCS ?, West Catholic)
    23. Foothill(Palo Cedro) 1-0 (NS D1, Eastern)
    25. Pittsburg 1-1 (NCS D1, Bay Valley)

Not sold on these 5 for a power list like this one. However, Serra, Logan, Jesuit, BOD, are likely candidates

  101. BigJoe Says:

enough on dunne. anyone getting over 2000 yds. is a stud. Junior, you know every DLS player on that field that nite had a mental advantage over their opponents. Like Tower of Power, shouts ” we came to play!” :)

  102. Prep Fan Says:

    Games involving top 10 teams:

#1 DLS should win this one going away. Mullen, while a long time power in Colorado HS football is coming off a poor season for them with 3 losses, has a new coach, is playing the most storied program in HS football history on the road, and scored just 14 points last week. They haven’t seen a defense like this year’s Sparty (few HS teams have), and I see DLS rolling 30-7.

#2 Logan at #10 SRV. SRV needs this win to avoid an 0-3 start heading into EBAL play, while Logan has had this one circled on the calendar since last November. This has the making of a reat game and could go either way. Logan’s running game with Long vs. SRV’s passing game with Birse. I’ll give Logan te slight edge, but SRV is playing at home. Logan 34-30.

#3 Concord should have no problem with Arroyo. Thompson gets 3 first half TDs and then sits. Minutemen 38-14.

#4 Campo should continue their regular season winning streak, but could have their hands full with SHC from the WCAL. Campo 30-20.

#5 Cal should win this one easily on paper, but CV is at home and held MV close for 3 quarters 2 weeks ago and ran the ball at will. Cal should score but will have to shut down the CV run game. Cal 34-17.

#6 Pitt vs. #9 MV. This is another great matchup, and I see Pitt getting back on the winning track by running, running, and running the ball. Pitt 38-28.

#7 BOD should have their hands full with another WCAL school Valley Christian of San Jose. While not the VC team of recent years, they should pose some problems for BOD and this could go either way. I’ll take BOD in a close one 30-28.

#8 Freedom is in for a dog fight with Franklin from the SJS. After tripping up and missing the game winning FG agaist AV in week 1, they bounced back and beat a good Foothill squad that Sweeney has called one of his best in years. I’ll give the edge to Freedom here in a close battle 38-34.

  103. Hunch Says:

There are questions entering this weekend’s games and some will be answered by Saturday night, others will not.

    1. How good is Pitt? From the game video I watched online vs. Cal high, it seems like Pitt is pretty good, but not great at all. I thought Cal was nice and physical, incredibly vanilla and very well coached in the elements of the game. Pitt’s QB is average at best.

    2. Is Monte Vista for real? I think so, at least in terms of being better than Pitt.

I give Monte Vista a 10-point win vs. Pitt tonight.

    3. San Ramon hosting James Logan. Who is better? The Wolves have a tuffer schedule than Logan. The Colts beat San Leandro but that program is falling down the well at frightening speed. I actually think San Ramon’s defense is better than Logan’s. And I also think Logan will get tired in the 2nd half from lack of depth.

I’m saying San Ramon by 14 points tonight over Logan.

    4. My esteemed alma mater Las Lomas was supposedly loaded for bear this year in division 2 but the only thing that got loaded in their opener vs. Odowd was the opposite side of the scoreboard. Hosting a very talented Foothill team, I don’t think gives LL much of a chance even though they are in the friendly confines of Walnut Creek. Foothill struggled vs. Freedom’s average defense but Freedom is much better than my Knights.

I give Foothill a 28-point win tonight over my Knights.

    5. Can De La Salle win another state title with an at best average quarterback this season? Yes they can. Mullen of CO is a sterling program but look for the Spartans to roll onward.

My hunch is Spartans by 21 over Mullen.

    6. Can Campolindo prevail in Kezar vs. Sacred Heart? No.

My Hunch is Sacred Heart by 21 over Campo.

    7. Is El Cerrito for real in 2012? Maybe. But we won’t know that until weeks 3, 4 and 5 are finished. If they win any 2 of those 3, then they are real.

    8. Is this the year Valley Christian of Dublin goes to the state title game in divsion 4? They have are very good chance with a massive o-line and a nasty defense, plus Salesian and Berean Christian are defeatable this year.

My hunch is VC by 40 tonight over Durham.

    9. If Freedom tightens up their defense, they will run away with the BVAL crown, gain the #2 seed in the playoffs and have a rematch with Sparta in the NCS finals.

My Hunch is Freedom comes up big upset tonight over Franklin by 2 points.

    Mr. Han,
‘Fraid you knew something, sir, that I didn’t.
Grant was the biggest shocker losing 27-36 at Burbank. First time in years. (Wonder if there were “neutral” officials or Metropolitan League officials?)
Placer 42 Foothill 14 at Oak Ridge High School. Either I way overated Foothill (Palo Cedro)or Placer is that good. The Hillmen knocked off Central Catholic 48-30 on the road 0 Week who beat St. Marys (Stockton)28-21 last Friday night. Placer will definetly be in my NorCal Top 25 for Week 2.
Pitt 14 Monte Vista(Danville) 44. Thought the Pirates would have trouble with the Mustangs even at home, but certainly didn’t see that score coming.
St.Ignacious 46 Terra Nova 26 at Terra Nova. SI took care of business against a “pretty good” team. SI will stay in my Top 25, especially considering how close the Marin Catholic 24 Vacaville 28 game was last Friday night on TV.
Grant, Foothill, and Pitt will be “out”.
