Castlemont football team will play Friday

Castlemont will field a varsity football team for the first time this season on Friday when it opens the Oakland Athletic League season at Oakland Tech.
Knights coach Lloyd Johnson said his team will have 24 academically eligible players, an increase from 12 in mid-September.
“We have been practicing every day,” said Castlemont coach Lloyd Johnson about the team’s five-day-a-week practice schedule.
Castlemont was forced to cancel nonleague games against Healdsburg and Encinal in September because of a lack of eligible players. It also forfeited its game on Sept. 7 against Vista del Lago-Folsom because of player eligibility issues. The Knights enter Friday’s game with an 0-3 overall record.

I hope no one schedules this school next year in the non league.

  • Gaucho man

Sad of what has happened to oal use to be a solid league hopefully they get back up I can remember when skyline,Oakland high were powerhouses every year and more recently Mack has been good but outside of them nothing ….but it’s funny in basketball league is good but football is headed downward

The OAL get worse by the years in most sports but basketball. The Oakland school district and the city has failed big time over there and its no excuse why things are getting worse. The OAL minus well just schedule games against eachother because I wouldnt waste my time trying to schedule them for a non-league game.

  • http://aol YoMama

There’s a solution to the OAL schedule. All teams in the league play each other twice. That makes a 10 game season. Playoff for the city championship.
No more cancelled games, travel expenses, etc.

  • http://aol BigJoe

Another aol suggestion. Break up the league and assign schools to other leagues, East Oakland schools to odowd and encinal league, west oakland schools to BHS league. Mack, Tech and Oakland high to Berk league, Mont, Fremont and Skyline to odowd league.

  • http://TheSchoolmarm TheSchoolmarm

Maybe the CIF will terminate Oakland as a section.

  • dnrapp

Big Joe, You do know that BOD and Berkeley are now in the same league.

  • http://ibabuzz.com PERKIN

Yeah probably the route they need to go. But then your giving their problems to BOD, B-High, EHS. From what I understand they will never combine with SF section do to travel. Then stick the OAL schools in a Richmond league. JFK, Richmond, De Anza, John Swett, Hercules & the OAL as one big League. 10 teams 9 games then we won’t have to hear about them any more. All teams should easily be able to compete. Or even Mission San Jose one of the other teams out. Anybody dumb enough to schedule them week 1 then thats that schools bad. I’m sure any of those schools in the league will take a forfeit win no problem.

  • ManDown

I like the idea of the OAL only playing each other. Anyone who schedules an OAL team for non-league game is basiclly ok with a bye that week because most likly they will get faked on. I can’t believe how bad it has got and its fustrating for the teams that get faked on. Very sad and tough times in the OAL.

  • chalktalk

no one seems 2 b addressing the problem
THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH KIDS 2 HAVE A FOOTBALL TEAM
    period…

  • http://ibabuzz coach

The OAL possibly could go to these leagues with Russell White as the commish, they have always wanted to stay away from NCS in the past.

  • EBfootball

If OAL is not a section then Russell White has no job. It’d only cost $600-$700 per school to be in the NCS. I bet he makes a cool $50,000 as commish so it would never be in the best interest for an OAL commissioner to leave their section. (http://cifncs.org/forms/files/dues.pdf)

  • OaklandTechCoach

How did these guys manage to get a team together and grade hasnt went in yet… if they were ineligible before grade, theyre still inel now… OAL is a corrupt league, Russel White former castlemont head coach now OAL commish is doing favors for his old team and former assistant coaches, Johnny Lorigo former castlemont counselor for multiple years now assistant OAL commish. You tell me something!!!! i gurantee you its ineligible kids playing for castlemont.. CIF needs to investigate the OAL office, its sad!

  • http://ibabuzz coach

Thats just it I’m not sure the school district has the money,or if the schools even have it, or want to pay the fees at all. OAL has been independant for decades.

  • footballguru

    This is ridulious..

  • EBfootball

$700×6<$50,0000. $4200 is way less than a full time salry in Oakland. @Coach: You must of went to an Oakland school if you can't figure out that math.

  • http://ibabuzz coach

I did go to public schools in oakland, and trust me math wasn’t a problem. It’s not about simple arithmatic here, it’s a willingness of the district to allocate funds to the 6 schools to join, and Russell Whites wanting to become a member of NCS. EBfootball please don’t try to insult me on this blog, Oakland public school district and the OAL office has been in shambles for years.

  • EBfootball

@Coach. It seems pretty straight forward and that’s why I’m clownin. Oakland Schools can pay a salary to someone about $40,000 to be their commissioner of their own section or pay $4200 to be in NCS. Get it? Every league does not pay someone to be a full time commissioner. Just dumb ass Oakland.

  • http://aol BigDog

Mabey OAL stays like it is. No games scheduled outside the league. Play each other twice. Might not be a good idea now to join NCS. Section doesn’t need these problems. Let them fix their own problems, they are going to spend another $ 2 million dollars mandated by the federal government on investigating why they have so many student suspensions.

  • EBfootball

Tech and Mack should opt out and join leagues that will take them or go independent.

  • http://aol BigDog

We beat Castlemont twice, beat Fremont and a tie, lost to Oakland High- all ranked teams. The coaching was better, the atheletes better and the demographics/economics better. Even during tough relations times in the ’60′s and ’70′s the atheletes were respective to others and basically there were no problems, at Castlemont you played behind a fenced field. They would also house opposing teams in the swimming pool area. The teams had a lot of swagger back then and it fun to beat the sheeetttttttttt out of them , actually most scores were very close. Being a private school we took some barbs, no major trash talk and after a few succesful series no issues on the field.

  • http://aol YoMama

The comments on OAL Russell White are unfounded. He has very good stock coming from Crespi Carmelite and the University California Berkeley.
He has a tough hand to deal with.
He can make 2 decisions; fold the league or each team plays each other twice.
If the league folds, then NCS picking up individual teams to certain leagues must have some gaurantes that these schools are going to field teams and show.
The academics in the OAL need to get fixed first if that decision is made.

  • chalktalk

where are u going 2 get the kids
to play on these football teams the u want 2 play each other twice a year idiots!!!!!!!

  • http://aol YoMama

OK, before calling everyone idiots, what are your ideas on saving the OAL or just in having football in these schools? How about 8 man football- its used across the country.

  • chalktalk

THE PROBLEM RUNS DEEP I GUESS U START BY GETTING THE DRUGS AND GUNS OUT OF THE COMMUNITY
stop momma’s from selling the EBT cards so the kids can eat!!!
OH YEAH MAKE THE 1% PAY THEIR FAIR share in taxes so we have after school programs with mentors for the less fortunate… U cut every program that would make a kid turn out 2 be a decent person then complain about the outcome

  • junior

8 man football is an excellent idea. The focus needs to be on salvaging the OAL in any way possible. It cant fold- the individual HS’s would not succeed on their own I don’t believe.

  • http://aol YoMama

ok, valid points, but we are not going to solve the social problems of oakland on this blog. there are other cities with the same problems that are fielding teams- socal- ex. crenshaw.
oakland A’s and raiders can step up but money needs to be reserved for sports. i believe the raiders gave 54 k to the district but don’t know what it was used for.

  • http://aol BigJoe

How about a police athletic league? They used it in SF for boxing. The mayor needs to get involved instead of playing around with oakland occupied. The mayor can headline and lead some fundraising. The mayor is not doing enough.

  • junior

How about White reaches out to the Cal football team and the Raiders and gets players involved. Assign a few players to each school to mentor the hs athletes.

  • http://aol YoMama

Crenshaw High in LA has an alumni newsletter that has reunions and fundraisers. OAL alumni can raise money with sports reunions, hall of fames, class reunions, football nites, car washes, etc. Does each OAL school have a newsletter or website for sports and students?
The pen is mighter than the sword.

  • Old Former Meddling Coach

We all need to step up, More Volunteer Coaches,More Facilities, Make Varsity,Freshman and JV sports Part of the PE requirement if There are On Campus Coaches and or a Certification For Coaches to teach PE under direction of a Credited Teacher. Bring Closer Bonds with High Schools and Pop Warner. Close civic programs that are not working and divert Funds to Youth programs. For sports we just need the facilities, equipment and qualified people that have the time. Equipemnt for the most part is already available as well as facilites. Assemble a community Youth Board to admisiter funds but has a open policy so we can see where every penny goes. And year round mentors! Keep them Busy and Interested! Jet Pride!

  • http://aol YoMama

chalktalk- will old meddling ideas work? they sound good. now the hard part, who’s going to do it? alumni?

  • chalktalk

    the idea sounds great
somebody start a non profit called

“just have sports” and hit up everyone that benefitted from OAL sports

  • billjohnson

castlemont waited this long to play to put a donut on the scoreboard! oal is a joke they should give me the silver bowl i need somewhere to put my fruit.
