Bishop O’Dowd is No. 1 in preseason national girls basketball rankings

We knew the Bishop O’Dowd girls basketball team would be very good this year. The Dragons return four starters from a state championship team and recently had four players sign Division I scholarships.

So how good are the Dragons expected to be? Well, they’re the No. 1 team in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 preseason national rankings. O’Dowd will get a chance to back up that ranking with a pretty impressive schedule. The team will play in the top division at the Nike TOC the week before Christmas, then head to the Oaks Christian Holiday Hardwood Invitational less than a week later (Windward and Long Beach Poly are also in the field). O’Dowd also has games scheduled with defending state champions Archbishop Mitty and La Jolla Country Day as well as St. Mary’s-Stockton.

Preaseason #1 in the nation is a great honor, and BOD has a great team with just about everyone returning from a state championship run a year ago. But now they have a target on their back and every team will be gunning for them. With that schedule, they will surely be tested. Undefeated would be very improbable given that schedule as well as the Open division format this year at state, but they will be a load for any team they play. Next week’s game at defending D2 state champ Mitty should be a war. Go Dragons!

With Oderra Chidom having the Olympic experience and the freshman guards becoming sophomores I don’t see how you can’t pull for the dragons.
I told the excellent writers last year that they should be in the top 10, but they snubbed them. Freeman had them #7 based upon schedule and power rankings. So maybe it’s their time. The core has been together 3 years and Kendall Waters is a great leader. They’ll play to her intensity level. If she wants the number 1 ranking in the country they’ll go undefeated.

Should be the best team in EastBay history but I very very seriously doubt number one in the country. We will see.

  • hoops

Forgot to mention I give their coach great credit for playing such a challenging schedule.

  • Oh Boy

Of course you have to give credit to the coach for a great schedule. Not only is it a challenge to the team but a showcase of the great talent in the Bay Area.

Congratulations to the BOD girls on the ranking and good luck on the run to a state Open title. Northern CA really needs to start representing better at the State level vs SoCal teams

Oh Boy, the girls are doing just fine representing NorCal with BOD, Mitty and Brookside Christian of Stockton all taking state titles a year ago. 3 out of 5 last year, 8 of the last 15 titles, 13 of the last 25, and 21 out of the last 40. Considering most people feel SoCal has better talent, I’ll definitely take 21 out of 40 since 2005.

It’s interesting how in relation to SoCal, the NorCal girls play better basketball than the NorCal boys.

  • Oh Boy

Prep Fan, Berkeley dominates D1 basketball in NorCal and has not shown well at State vs Mater Dei/SoCal teams. Salesian was blown out in the D4 Championship last year and St. Mary’s has had loaded D4 teams lately that haven’t won State. That is what I meant about representing better. While Southern California has greater talent depth due to a larger population, the talent gap at the top is not as wide as most people think.

Also, talent in southern teams are spread out more while our top girls are concentrated at several schools. The few schools with elite talent in the North will all be in the Open. It is likely that SoCal will dominate State D1-D5 so it is more important than ever that we win the featured game-previously D1, now Open.

  • hoops

The reason So Cal is considered better is because they have more very good teams in D1 D2.The state titles total is a little misleading.Kind of like the NBA in recent years. The West had more very good teams than the East, but an Eastern team might win the title. The west was better overall, but maybe did not have the one best team.

  • Prep Fan

Mitty is D2 and BOD D3. Brookside is D5. Private schools have dominated the girls’ championships and NorCal has no D1 privates. It’s been mostly Berkeley for NorCal D1 with an occasional Monte Vista, Oak Ridge or Oakland Tech sneaking in. Oak Ridge & Oakland Tech actually won it the years they went.

  • hoops

The facts are that so cal has many more strong teams especially in the top 3 divisions. It is not even close and it never has been close.the main reason being there are a lot more schools in So Cal.

  • Prep Fan

    Agreed.

  • Oh Boy

I guess my point got lost. I was just saying that NorCal will always lose the depth argument (just like in football!). But DLS piles up state championships against southern teams’ best representative. SoCal can only send 6 teams to State in hoops, same as NorCal, and our best team (BOD) should beat their best team

  • mckbooth

    Oh Boy,
I think if Mater Dai had played BOD in the state final last year, they’d would have been rolled also.

  • Prep Fan

St. Mary’s of Stockton also would have beaten Mater Dai, and Carondelet barely lost to Mitty too. Any of those teams would have represented well. The North has been pretty deep the last few years.

  • hoops

We will see how the Dragons do this year with all the expectations and the huge bullseye on their back. They have 7 D1 players that I know of.The 4 seniors, the 2 soph guards and the new freshman who is going to be really good. They have the best talent this area has ever seen. This is a once in a lifetime group and to top it all off they seem to be great kids… The only problem I see is that when you are so talented and expected to win it all it can become less fun and more like a job.Trust me on that one.

  • mckbooth

They’ve already been under a lot of pressure. What hurts them is playing so many teams that are not even close to being in the same class and then get one that is all of the sudden a on their level. If they get beat it’ll be early.
I’ve heard a lot about this freshmen coming in this year. Boy she must be something if they’re talking about her in the same sentence with these girls. Could it be possible that they’ve gotten better???? WOW

  • hoops

Open division is the best thing that could of happened to them.It should truly provide motivation for the entire season and keep them mentally sharp. If they had the same post season to look forward to that they had last year, their season would have been over when their league started.I take that back.I guess they are now in a new league with Berkeley.Another motivator. They have no excuses now.
