Boys Soccer: League Predictions, Rankings, Standings, Stats

By Matt Smith
Sunday, December 9th, 2012 at 8:43 am in Boys soccer.

For the first time, I am going to do league predictions, trying to accurately predict the leagues from top to bottom.

The first thing I ask is that nobody get upset at me, because this is just my opinion of how I think things will shake out and it gives you every chance to prove me wrong if you don’t like where you’re predicted to finish.
We’ll see how this goes and if people like it, we can make it a new thing.

BVAL

The clear favorite to me in this league is Pittsburg. Having seen them twice, this team is fast, confident and legit. Even in the loss to Monte Vista, they looked good. Deer Valley is the most likely challenger, while Antioch, Freedom and Heritage have all shown they can compete so far. This league is always competitive, and Pittsburg won’t go undefeated/untied and run away with it. These are all rivalry games and I would expect 3-4 teams from this league to make the playoffs.
Predicted order of finish:

1. Pittsburg
2. Deer Valley
3. Freedom
4. Antioch
5. Heritage
6. Liberty

DFAL

Judged on the first week of results, I’d be a fool not to say Acalanes is the favorite, and it’s what I would have said even if they hadn’t played two league games. I think the rest of the league is a crapshoot from week to week and I think anyone has the ability to beat anyone else. I do expect Dublin to play much better than they have, and Campo will be gunning for Acalanes down the stretch. Alhambra has a chance to be the surprise team, after a nice start so far.
Predicted order of finish:

1. Acalanes
2. Campolindo
3. Alhambra
4. Dublin
5. Dougherty Valley
6. Miramonte
7. Las Lomas

DVAL

Ygnacio Valley should be considered a heavy favorite, but, I don’t think College Park is going to let them run away. Expect these two teams to have battles the two times they play, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see CP win this league. I think the top two in this league are well established with others sorting things out as we go along.
Predicted order of finish:

1. Ygnacio Valley
2. College Park
3. Northgate
4. Concord
5. Clayton Valley
6. Mount Diablo
7. Berean Christian

EBAL

Should I not pick De La Salle? I pretty much have to. The four-time defending NCS champs are the favorite and have a good amount of returning players and some new blood. However, this league is deeper than it’s been in the last five years, and that is saying a lot. I don’t expect DLS to go unbeaten. With the usual suspects in the mix, plus Foothill rapidly improving, watch out for some entertaining soccer from week to week. I think it’s possible seven teams from this league make the playoffs. Predicting how this league will finish is next to impossible.
Predicted order of finish:

1. De La Salle
2. Amador Valley
3. Monte Vista
4. California
5. San Ramon Valley
6. Foothill
7. Granada
8. Livermore

MVAL

This league is in flux, and it’s a good time for some new blood to jump towards the top. Newark Memorial is still the favorite, and deservedly so, but I am keeping an eye on Mission San Jose and Washington to possibly finish in the top two or three. Don’t be surprised.
Predicted order of finish:

1. Newark Memorial
2. Mission San Jose
3. Logan
4. Washington
5. American
6. Irvington
7. Moreau Catholic
8. Kennedy

OAL

I don’t know much about this league, and I wish I knew more. I know that Oakland Tech and Skyline will likely be battling it out for the title, and that Oakland Tech is a program to keep an eye on.
Predicted order of finish:

1. Oakland Tech
2. Skyline
3. Oakland
4. Castlemont
5. Fremont

TCAL ROCK

I think other than Richmond, who will run away with this league, everyone else is pretty close. The fight for spots two through six will be very interesting.
Predicted order of finish:

1. Richmond
2. St. Mary’s
3. El Cerrito
4. Albany
5. St. Joseph Notre Dame
6. Salesian

TCAL STONE

This league is very balanced, and at first glance I’d have to say three teams stick out to me that will be battling for the league crown. De Anza, Hercules and Pinole Valley will have some great games this year and there will be a fight at the top of the standings.
Predicted order of finish:

1. Hercules
2. Pinole Valley
3. De Anza
4. Kennedy
5. St. Patrick-St. Vincent
6. Swett

WACC FOOTHILL

I think it’s possible for all six teams to win this. O’Dowd, Berkeley and Mt. Eden have been the best teams of late, Alameda is getting better while Arroyo and Castro Valley are on the rise. I still think it comes down to O’Dowd and Berkeley, but I wouldn’t be surprised to be completely wrong.
Predicted order of finish:

1. Bishop O’Dowd
2. Berkeley
3. Alameda
4. Mt. Eden
5. Arroyo
6. Castro Valley

WACC SHORELINE

Hayward is the heavy favorite here, but with so many rivalry games, namely with Tennyson and San Lorenzo, watch out. Still, I think this is the Farmers league to lose. Piedmont and San Leandro could still cause problems as those teams typically get stronger as the season goes along.
Predicted order of finish:

1. Hayward
2. Tennyson
3. San Lorenzo
4. San Leandro
5. Piedmont
6. Encinal

Rankings

By winning the TVC and looking very impressive against Pittsburg while doing so, Monte Vista gets a very deserved jump in the rankings. YV looks to be back in form and also gets a jump as earlier transgressions have been forgiven. Both MV and YV jump five spots.
Berkeley moves into the top ten after an impressive win over San Ramon Valley, while Foothill continues to climb. College Park continues to play a tough schedule, and has looked pretty tough at times this year, and is back in the top 15.

1. De La Salle (1-0-0)

  1. Juan Pito Says:

These are some great rankings, I respect the fact that you kept College Park and Richmond in the top 15 despite losing records, they have played some tough schedules for sure.

  2. Bueller Says:

Are keeper stats maintained as well? Shame if they don’t get their due.

  3. Matt Smith Says:

@Juan Pito Thanks. This was a tough week. Lots of moving around, but I feel like I stayed consistent with my ranking philosophies.

  4. Matt Smith Says:

@Bueller I’ll try to incorporate keeper stats.

  5. bkells Says:

Matt…well done on rankings and predictions. Can you comment on DLS’s game yesterday with James Logan.

  6. Matt Smith Says:

Just from my understanding of the game, DLS has a transfer kid named Jones, and I think he’s only a sophomore and was a frosh stud at LL last year.
They also just seem super, super balanced as usual. They probably won’t have a guy with more than 12-15 goals, but will have like eight guys with five or more.
That’s what makes them so tough as well as the discipline and the pressure.

  7. bkells Says:

    Thanks for the insight Matt

  8. eric Says:

    Matt,

Do you get your stats off of max preps or are they sent to you from the teams? If so how can we send you our stats?

    Irvington Soccer

  9. irvington dad Says:

Let me get this straight. Irvington beats Mission in the WC, yet Mission is predicted to finish second and Irvington sixth?

That’s confusing. But good to see we have some rankings and a way to look up on all the other leagues. Thanks matt.

  10. Matt Smith Says:

@Eric I usually depend on people sending the stats either to me, or emailing them to the newspaper. If you want to email me at mhsmith78@gmail.com, and/or prepscores@bayareanewsgroup.com, that would be great. I usually look to Maxpreps as a last resort. I don’t like them very much.

@Irvington Dad I just have a hunch about this MSJ team. They seem tough, and despite the WSC loss to Irvington, I think they’ll be very tough in league play.

  11. Ncsfan123 Says:

    Hey Matt,
Maybe could you split up the stats league to league?

  12. Matt Smith Says:

@Ncsfan123 I’d love to be able to do that, but I think that is just a little more work than I have time for to do each week, but maybe at the end of the season?

  13. The Sweeper Says:

    Hey Matt,

It was good to see you at SRV yesterday. What a great day for competitive matches and the officiating was top notch. Congratulations to Monte Vista for winning the tournament. The Mustangs matched up really well against the Pirates. A couple of other comments: College Park looked dangerous from all over the field, Clayton Valley’s midfield play is under-rated, and the EBAL will be crazy competitive.

While it may still be early, I did notice that several players were in mid-season form, whining and cursing good officiating. The refs were fairly judicious, putting up with more than they should have to. Some really good players, clear team assets, suddenly become an “un-coachable” liability. Just put a lid on it, and let your play do your talking.

Nice job on the rankings. BTW, that is 65 teams that you are ranking…65! Have you patented your ranking algorithms? Have you handicapped the 2014 World Cup? Let me guess…Brasil?

    See you at the pitch.

  14. Ball Don't Lie Says:

Nice work on the rankings Matt!

Appreciate all the detail. One question…does Acalanes ever play or scrimmage any of the EBAL teams this year?

  15. nikessss Says:

    At Ball Don’t Lie,
Acalanes played Monte Vista in a scrimmage earlier in the year, however the game was cut short due to no lights. Monte Vista won 2 0 but acalanes didn’t have many of their starters due to club play.

  16. The Sweeper Says:

#14. Acalanes has played SRV in past years and they have been close matches. Maxpreps shows the Dons hosting the Wolves on Jan 19th.

  17. Matt Smith Says:

Sweeper is right, Acalanes and SRV will play this year.

And Sweeper, it was great to see you. Where did you disappear to? I didn’t see you in your spot after we talked during the Berkeley game.

  18. MVAL Soccer Fan Says:

Matt, what do you think the chances of a 3rd MVAL team making it to NCS this year? Lately they’ve only gotten two teams in, with EBAL dominating the section.

I’ve seen Irvington, Mission, American, and Washington all play this year. They all look pretty even. Irvington dominated the ball vs Mission in their match up but lack of size was an issue. Mission, Washington and American all have a lot of heart and toughness. Just interested to get your input, because I remember the days that MVAL used to dominate this section.

  19. mudhen Says:

Did anybody notice Castillo’s goal total? I really hope he’s o.k.

  20. Matt Smith Says:

@Mudhen I heard that Rigo tore all three ligaments in his knee. Very, very sad for that young man. Tremendous player and has worked very hard.

@MVAL Soccer Fan I am thinking three MVAL teams get in this year. Logan will right the ship in league and get in, and then someone else will get in. I have a hunch things have evened up enough in that league so it isn’t so top heavy.

  21. MVAL Fan Says:

#18 @MVAL Soccer Fan It’s going to be an interesting year for all the MVAL teams! I was there at the Mission Vs. Irvington game to see what it will be like for my son’s team this year during season and I have to say you were watching the wrong game. It was a Barcelona vs. Chelsea game as Mission passed around the ball beautifully and controlled the ball 70-80% of the game while Irvington showed a strong defense. Great last minute goal by Irvington with a strong effort of their forwards. But this Mission San Jose team actually worries me with the skill and heart that they show at their games. Will be fun to see who will join NCS this year in MVAL or possibly “kick-out” Logan this year!

Great work so far Matt! Keep it up!

  22. Ball Don't Lie Says:

Thanks All for the feedback on Acalanes. With regards to the player mentioned above, really sorry to hear about such a severe injury.

  23. Tri-City Dude Says:

Good job with your predictions, Matt. I only have one disagreement and I think Irvington Dad talked about it already. While I do think that MSJ is the better team, I think Irvington at 6th is a little too low. They are at least better than American and Washington based on what I’ve seen so far, and I think they can surprise people and make a run at the league. I wouldn’t count the Vikings out.

@ MVAL Soccer Fan, Those four teams, Logan, and Newark should make the league very fun to watch. Newark may be the favorite, but Logan, Irvington, MSJ, American, and Washington will be challenging them for MVAL glory.

  24. The Sweeper Says:

    Hey Matt,

I took a break after the 2nd match and it took 25 minutes to get a made-to-order sandwich (typical in Danville, they are “anti-fast-food” whatever that means). I missed the first five minutes of the MV/Pitt match, and then stayed until halftime of the SRV/Richmond match. I was talking to some MV fans when you left and could not catch up with you.

I am still interested in DLS’ schedule in December and if they are making a trip to SoCal.

Lastly, I am sad to hear about the Hayward athlete’s injuries. As we discussed, we pray and wish only the best for these athletes.

BTW, limited taxi service from BART remains an option.

    See you at the pitch.

  25. The Sweeper Says:

    Hey Matt,

What about those patent filings on your ranking algorithm(s) and your 2014 World Cup predictions?

JK, you have enough on your plate as it is, but I am sure that this blog can comment on 2014. What about Mr. Messi? Is he heck-on-cleats or what? There is no answer for this wizard/magician/vituoso…and they ask who the POY is? Really?

Back to East Bay Futball priorities: What are the must see matches that you will cover and the matches that you cannot cover between now and Christmas. We can get this blog site to cover the gaps.

    See you at the pitch…

  26. Matt Smith Says:

    Hey Sweeper,

The taxi service will be called upon at some point. That is for sure!

I think matches I am keeping an eye on, just off the top of my head, are MV v. Cal on Tuesday, DLS v. AV next Tuesday, YV v. Northgate on Thursday, Pitt v. YV on the 22nd and of course the DLS Showcase, of which I will run the schedule here in just a little bit… I’ll post more games as I think of them also.

Oh ya, I’ll be at O’Dowd v. Piedmont tomorrow and Dougherty v. Alhambra on Wednesday.

P.S. Messi is not bad at soccer. Haha. Great day for me yesterday. My Blues beat Tottenham at Goodison to move into fourth.

  27. Matt Smith Says:

    DLS Showcase

  28. Shinguard Says:

@ Matt Showcase is a great set of games..definitely on my schedule of things to do. It Gives you a good look at some of the top local and out of area teams.

Here are some other games that are @ De La Salle during Christmas Break:
    EBAL League Games
    12/13 vs Foothill at 6:30pm
12/20 vs Monte Vista at 6:00pm

Road Games: 12/18 away at Amador Valley 6:00pm
12/26-12/29 Sparty hits the road to San Diego and the Southern Cal HS Classic / Nautical

  29. Old Hayward High GK Says:

Rigo for Hayward is most likely out for the year. What a shame haven’t seen a talent like his in years. The kid will win you games.

  30. Mudhen Says:

That is really terrible. He’s a good kid. Is there anywhere a card could be sent?

  31. HOMELESS Says:

    TENNYSON AT ALHAMBRA 6;00 PM

  32. soccerman Says:

Hey Matt, I’m pretty sure the Mv/Cal game is Thursday and not Tuesday.

  33. Matt Smith Says:

    Thank you Soccerman.

Change to my calendar. I won’t be able to make the Dougherty v. Alhambra game on Wednesday, but I will be at Northgate v. YV.

I will also only be able to attend one day of the Showcase, so I will be there on Saturday.

  34. old soccer head Says:

I notice that Cal is undefeated after 10 games. I suppose we’ll find out soon enough but are they a good side or is that record due to a soft schedule? Has anyone here actually seen them play yet? BTW, Matt, thanks for all the rankings and the fun conversation and controversy it produces!!

  35. Piedmont Kid Says:

Matt, I am a player on the Piedmont team, and I feel that you predicting us at 5th place in our league is unfortunate. I think we have a solid group of players/atheletes who can take good shots and move the ball. I know our league has Hayward, but I beleive we are better than Tennyson, San Lorenzo, and San Leandro. We pushed San Lorenzo to their limits on Saturday, and if anyone underestimates us you will be very sorry to play us. Otherwise, mad respect for what you do Matt.

  36. Eduardo Says:

Hi Matt have you seen the new foward that Mt eden has ? Mt eden vs hayward @hayward 3:15

  37. Matt Smith Says:

Freedom beats MV 1-0. That’s my third No. 3 team to lose in three weeks.

  38. Matt Smith Says:

    @Eduardo I haven’t seen him. What’s his name?

@Piedmont Kid I hope to be proved wrong, my man. I fully believe you’re capable which is why I had you guys on the list just outside the top 15 to start the year. I’ll get a look at you guys tomorrow against Bishop O’Dowd.

  39. HOMELESS Says:

    ALHAMBRA 2 TENNYSON 1 FINAL

  40. Teamsamba Says:

When teams like Hayward play against weaker competition such as the teams the played in preseason. Doesn’t that give their players an unfair advantage against other players who are facing real competition?

  41. mudhen Says:

    What?

  42. eduardo Says:

    @matt
theres 2 a freshment name Aaron Cortez , Juan Villegas

  43. eduardo Says:

    @matt
theres 2 a freshment name Aaron Cortez , Senior Juan Villegas

  44. Piedmont Kid Says:

Glad to know you’re coming to our game, Matt. Mark my words, Piedmont will push Bishop O’ Dowd to their limits.

  45. EBU Says:

I have a feeling that @PiedmontKid is David, the Piedmont head coach hahaha

  46. Shinguard Says:

@Piedmont Predictions don’t mean much in regards to the big picture. The big picture is the race to a NCS slot ..one game at time. If you read this blog to much you will start to get gray hair. Take the positive from blog and don’t dwell on the negative. ENJOY your season and give it your best shot.

  47. Old Hayward High GK Says:

@mudhen I’m pretty sure you can mail one in to Hayward high and it’ll get to him.

  48. David the Piedmont Head Coach Says:

@EBU I think my time spent working on my graduate degree would help me spell athlete correctly. But than again I see how I could be mistake for a 14-17 year old boy.

  49. Matt Smith Says:

Checking in from Bishop O’Dowd High where the Dragons are about to host Piedmont.

  50. Matt Smith Says:

O’Dowd goes up 1-0 in the 8th minute.

  51. Matt Smith Says:

Piedmont missed two great chances in the last five minutes. Still 1-0 with about 20 minutes before halftime.

  52. EBU Says:

How is #10 for Piedmont doing, Matt?

  53. Matt Smith Says:

    1-0 BOD at half.

  54. Matt Smith Says:

@EBU That kid, Matt Baringer, is a stud. Best player on the field. Created a great chance that rang off the near post.

  55. Saint marys fan Says:

Hey Matt, just wanted to let you know that Saint Mary’s tied Richmond high 1-1 today. Not so sure if they will run away with the league as you predicted ;)

  56. EBU Says:

Baringer is good. Who are your favorite players on Berkeley and Hercules?

  57. Matt Smith Says:

Thank you St. Mary’s fan. Could have never guessed that.

For Berkeley, Nigus Solomon is a lot of fun to watch. Matthew Marletta is a beast in the back.

Haven’t seen Hercules, but Jeremy Romero is a big time player.

  58. Matt Smith Says:

Amador Valley and Deer Valley tied 0-0 at half.

  59. Matt Smith Says:

    O’Dowd wins 2-0.

  60. Matt Smith Says:

Doyle for AV. 1-0 60th minute.

    AV 2-0.

  62. MVAL Alumni Says:

    @Matt

Any comments on the performances by both teams by PHS and BOD?

  63. SCP Says:

    Hercules 3 Kennedy 0

  64. Matt Smith Says:

O’Dowd played very solidly. They have quality all over the field and didn’t really make any major mistakes. Once this team gets a little more aggressive in the midfield, they’ll be very tough.

Piedmont is very young, but was unfazed. They held their own and have some very good players. They stayed organized and are only gonna get better.

  65. Matt Smith Says:

    Pinole 4, De Anza 1

  66. Matt Smith Says:

    Alameda 1, San Leandro 0

  67. Rick Says:

Hey Matt what do you think of Berkeley high #10 nigus Solomon?? There’s been a lot of talk on the style of play he has

  68. Tri-City Dude Says:

Sounded like you went to a good game between BOD and Piedmont, Matt. Piedmont Kid, I like how confident you are in your team despite your record so far. Like Shinguard said, you shouldn’t look too much into predictions and what other people say, because that can affect you mentally. I’m pretty sure you guys can do well in your league, and I don’t think anyone, especially Matt, is disrespecting your team. Best of luck Piedmont.

  69. BackLine Says:

Hey Matt, love your predictions and list of stat leaders. But how about a little love for defenders who’ve kept goals against so far to a bare minimum (or maybe none in some cases)? Those guys are priceless and and mostly under recognized!

  70. Matt Smith Says:

@Rick I really like Nigus Solomon. An all around player, who is doing it all for Berkeley. Very skilled.

@BackLine I agree with you that it’s good to give defenders love, but it’s hard to find a stat that quantifies that.

    @Tri-City Dude Well said.

  71. Stewie Says:

DLS bench is very deeeep at all positions and can come up with that last min goal. You have to say that the critical execution within the box during free kicks and corners is trade mark of the Spartans. Then add in a stout defense that is not afraid to attack, and the expanded creativity of the front the past few seasons has made them a consistent force on the pitch.
Sounds like a recipe for success.

  85. Shinguard Says:

DV 1 Alhambra 0. Dogs got robbed on a late goal for a 1-1 draw on a very very questionable off-side call. 2nd half was all Dog’s but they had a rough 1st half.
Thanks to Capt Ahab ..the fisherman.
The re-match is at Alhambra….Bulldogs are a very feisty animal.

  86. Stewie Says:

Can you say grand-theft? Everybody including the blind monkey knew that was a bad call. Cant wait for the return match at Alhambra.

  87. SoccerMan Says:

Grand theft? The goal scorer was a foot from the goal line, and behind all defenders, including the GK, when the ball was shot. It was going to go in without the touch he took from an offside position. Your complaint should be directed at the player who tried to score from an obvious offside position, not at the ref who made the correct call. All in all DV played better and was solid defensively over the course of the night, though Alhambra did turn it on in the final 15 minutes playing much more direct.

  88. Matt Smith Says:

@Shinguard Love the Moby Dick reference.

Other scores from around the area…

    Dublin 2, Las Lomas 0
    Acalanes 5, Miramonte 1

  90. Mudhen Says:

Considering the rumors that have passed around, that’s very good news for Rigo. And Hayward too!

  91. Stewie Says:

Foothill is at DLS tonight at 6:30 should be a good match. Also Cal at Monte Vista at 6 may try and split viewing time as EBAL blasts off for another exciting season.
Clayton Valley Charter is looking disjointed watched the MV game…CV needs lots of work. Tough job for new coaching staff.

  92. Stalwart Says:

    Wow. Good news about Rigo.

But it’s a lesson of some sort that it was first identified as a three-ligament tear – but then became a sprain. I wonder what caused that confusion.

  93. Matt Smith Says:

    Who is where tonight?
    I’m at Northgate.

  94. Matt Smith Says:

  106. Matt Smith Says:

  108. HalaMadrid Says:

  109. Matt Smith Says:

YV was very interesting. Northgate is fiesty, but YV is very creative.

  116. Juan Pito Says:

was at mv cal game tonight. Cal was up a man due to a red card early in the first man and really didn’t take advantage. MV is a dangerous and speedy team, while I think Cal has a very strong middle and some great goalkeeping.

  117. Juan Pito Says:

also caught first half of foothill dls game, foothill will be challenging for teams this year. A real dark horse in EBAL.

  118. Lionel Messi Says:

  120. Lionel Messi Says:

Or was it an own goal by DLS?

  121. Foothill fan Says:

No own goal in the Foothill/ De La Salle game, but it was a very even game. Looks like Foothill is for real!

  122. T. Powell Says:

O’Dowd 2 Castro Valley 2 final. Not much defense played in the first half resulting in 4 goals but the second half was very sloppy. Little ball possession and ball control. Poor game management of both teams giving up late 1st half goals.

Thanks for the love Matt. It’s very weird being a spectator this season but I might as well contribute my time by adding to the blog.

  123. Stewie Says:

Foothill did not play bad..they played tough.
De La Salle is still jelling.

  124. DLSwireless Says:

For the DLS win the game went back a forth in the 1st half. Foothill played a fine game, just they did not have a lot shots on goal against DLS. Clarke was not a factor in the game. Foothill scored in the 1st half past Andrew. DLS came out hard in the 2nd half and tied on a cross into the box as DLS was crashing the back of a Foothill defender just redirect into the goal. DLS second goal with about 15 mins left on a set play deflection to goal. DLS depth in the second half helped keep the ball in the attacking zone most of the half not giving Foothill a lot of scoring opportunities. On to the DLS Showcase.

  125. Shinguard Says:

Mater Dei-LA was having practice after Foothill game at DLS. Apparently US Coach Jurgen Klinsmann’s son is a Sophomore and a Goal-Keeper for Mater Dei. This match should be top notch. Game time is 7pm Friday at DLS.

Nice win 3-1 by AV over Livermore last night.AV came out flat and was down 1-0 at half. The second half was a different story.Coach Berglin seemed to adjust players and positions which resulted in win.Looking forward to Tuesday’s game against DLS.
Matt will you be able to attend this game?

  130. Matt Smith Says:

Sorry for the late response, but I had to spend some time with Miss Idaho when I got home last night and not be on the blog :)

So YV/Northgate… Northgate was in control early, and looked very dangerous, and got a goal out of it. After that, YV dominated possession but Max Sonnier played an amazing game to keep things tied.
YV did have a lot of the ball, did look dangerous, especially when they were quick with their passes, but they dribbled a little too much.
Northgate did have other chances as well and looked pretty dangerous coming up the left side, and with Foster in the midfield.

  131. Matt Smith Says:

Here’s a roundup of all the scores, so they are in one place…

    DVAL
    YV 3, Northgate 1
    CP 4, Mount 1

  143. RCain Says:

Thanks Matt. Sounds like your prediction about Northgate is right… they’ve turned around dramatically. I’m not surprised Matt did well, like I said earlier he performed excellently at the Stevenson game. He needs to work on his goalkicks and other distribution… but that kids got the fastest reflexes of any goalkeeper I’ve seen in person.
I won’t lie I’m an underdog kind of guy, was excited when you posted Northgate was up. YV sounds consistently dominant but I feel they lack cohesiveness.

  150. Matt Smith Says:

Tack! Nice to see you man.

And yes, that is true about Tennyson, unfortunately. Just one of those pesky paper work issues. An honest mistake and no bad intentions whatsoever.

What was the reason tennyson forfeit all there 8 games ? Was it because players dint make grades?

  153. Mudhen Says:

    Berkeley 3 arroyo 2

A really good exciting match that could have gone either way.

  154. Shinguard Says:

Well placed free-kick from the 20 with the classic bend by De La Salle’s #10 Mikie Guerrero was hammered into the top corner of the net to give the Spartans that 1 goal to seal the win. Spartans back 4 and Goalie Andrew Konstantino shut down Mater Dei. The Spartan offense did break through but the shots were skillfully stopped by by Mater Dei’s Sophomore Keeper Jon Klinsmann and some feisty defenceive play by the Monarchs. Both teams played very tough aggressive ball in midfield but Sparty kept forward pressure on for most of the game and prevailed to hold on to that 1 goal.

  155. Stewie Says:

Alhambra needs to get things done earlier on in the game not at the last 10 min…but it is still good to have that last push available. Dublin can be beat with aggressive speed and some good feeder passes. But you do need to close the deal to make it happen…..Its one of those JUST DO IT moments.

  156. Stewie Says:

Gonna head out to Showcase today …Acalanes and Campo games should be good games to see. I might even hang for the 7pm game..Sparty serves some good burritos at snack stand. Actually YV starts in a few think I will resign to the fact that I am a soccer junkie gotta jam over to Winton.

  157. Mudhen Says:

Hercules vs. Pinole Valley on Tuesday, has all of the makings of a wild one.

  158. Matt Smith Says:

@Mt. Eden Fan What happened to Tennyson was that some paper work on a transfer student didn’t get filed in time, or correctly. It was an oversight, a simple error. It’s really too bad.

  159. Matt Smith Says:

YV goes up 1-0 on O’Dowd. Tata header.

  162. Tack Says:

Thanks Matt! It’s nice to be back. I’ve expanded my soccer watching to more than just Dublin now, so maybe ill catch you at a game sometime soon. Unfortunate that the Tennyson news is true, they had a strong team in my opinion.

  163. T. Powell Says:

O’Dowd is slowly falling apart barely able to put out a starting 11 due to injuries and suspensions. Should be interesting once January come around and they have a full active roster. Matt, you have a summary for this mornings game? Wasn’t able to attend either O’Dowd game this weekend.

  164. Foothill fan Says:

Foothill at Pittsburg at 5 pm today. Should be a good one!

  165. Ncschamps Says:

DLS Cathedral with was as entertaining game that looked like a NCS Championship game. DLS might see them down in SoCal in a few weeks again. So it was a wonderful set of 10 games with classy teams. It’s time to turn the lights out in the press box. See you at Amador on Tuesday.

Matt, the O’Dowd team is full of problems. Pretty sad to see the team with so many injuries. We will see what happens in the next couple of weeks and after winter break.

  205. Matt Smith Says:

@TCAL Haven’t seen Hercules, but I’m really hoping to this week.

Go tomorrow Matt, The Pinole game is a real grudge match.

  207. Stalwart Says:

I wonder if it’s time to rethink that Northgate non-ranking. They’re 5-1-3 now, I think. Their defense, including Sonnier as goalkeeper, admirably held off a vigorous CP attack tonight. Good football.

  208. Stalwart Says:

oops – wrong thread. Matt can you delete?
