Boys Soccer: MVAL, Rankings, Standings, Stats

It might not appear to be a league loaded with top flight teams, but if you look very closely at the Mission Valley Athletic League, it is a league that is pretty solid from top to bottom and it is a league that will have several teams make the playoffs.

Of course Newark Memorial still headlines the league. The program has recently reached the NCS finals, and a couple years before that was in the NCS semifinals. They are a team that should be considered the favorite, but as evidenced by Irvington playing them tough last week, there will be very few easy wins.
Irvington, with a win over Mission San Jose this year and draws with Antioch and Newark shows the Vikings are going to be in the mix.
Speaking of MSJ, this team could be a serious threat. Every loss, including to two EBAL teams and a ranked Mt. Eden team, have been by one goal. They have played well against very highly thought of teams.
Washington has a win and a draw against EBAL schools and is off to a very good start, and looks like a legit playoff contender, along with MSJ.
And of course there is Logan. A team that got off to a rough start outside of league play, but was always going to bounce back because they are just always solid. The Colts have ran out to the league lead, and talks of their demise were probably way too premature. Logan looks like a playoff team, once again.
Kennedy, American and Moreau have all had close results that show that they could also be tough on any team on any given night, and don’t be surprised if one or more of these teams makes a push to the playoffs.
The MVAL is very competitive and should be very competitive from top to bottom this season.

Rankings

Couldn’t drop DLS from the top spot after a draw with a very good out of area team in Cathedral. Acalanes is waiting to pounce on that top spot as the Dons have looked nothing short of impressive this year.
Back into the top five is YV as that team seems to be getting better, while Amador Valley and San Ramon Valley both jump two spots after successful weeks.
The newest team into the top 15 is Mt. Eden, who continues to put up good results. Hercules creeps nearer to the top 15 with a big test against Pinole Valley this week, while St. Mary’s, Washington and Freedom all jump into the consideration list.

Did not have an opportunity to see DLS over their weekend tourney.Any additional thoughts regarding this years squad?Should be an exciting game on Tues against Amador….Classic EBAL in making.

  2. ReCap Says:

I would kick SRV up 1-2 slots
DLS looks solid…seemed a bit tired, but they also just finished finals this past week. Counted 26 players so bench is deep based on the club players that I know. They also have 2 LL transfers that cant play until after the 1st based on transfer rules.
The EBAL will be a fight this year, not sure if any team will dominate in league play. The NCS run should be exciting.

  3. Soccer fan Says:

    Hey Matt
In your opinion do you think Mt eden has a good chance wining the season?
Who’s your favorite player from Mt. Eden?

  4. Soccer fan Says:

    Hey Matt
In your opinion do you think Mt. Eden has a good chance of wining the season?
Who’s your favorite so far from Mt. Eden

  5. Nacho Don Says:

Not sure what to think of the Acalanes record. They haven’t played many top 15′s nor will in the future. Most of the top 15 have played each other, or will in the near future. Does YV look like they have a rougher schedule, and could swap spots with Acalanes? They may end up with a worse record, but actually be a better team? Anyone closer to these teams have thoughts on this?

Also interesting how the article about MVAL uses EBAL as a standard of measure.

Starting to look like the TVC had a bunch of the top 15 teams in it.

  6. bkells Says:

@ReCap thanks or your comments. What does AV need to do in order to beat DLS?

  7. Bear Says:

Max preps shows YV still has to play #8 Pitt, #14 college park twice and #2 Acalanes.

Aca still has to play #14 college park, #5 YV, #6 San Ramon valley and #11 Hayward.

  8. Matt Smith Says:

@Soccer Fan I have not seen Mt. Eden yet, so I’m not sure. I get the feeling from their results and what I’ve heard, that they are legit.

  9. samone Says:

It looks like young Richmond team is starting to come together after a slow start and
playing like they have been in recent years. It looks like they have a GK this year?

  10. lovesoccer Says:

I seen Mt Eden there a good team but there one dimensional they were getting work from Hayward with 10 players .

  11. soccer2014 Says:

    This week’s EBAL games:

    Tuesday 12/18:
    San Ramon Valley at California
De La Salle at Amador Valley
    Livermore at Monte Vista
    Foothill at Granada

    Thursday 12/20:
    California at Livermore
Monte Vista at De La Salle
    San Ramon Valley at Foothill
    Granada at Amador Valley

  12. Soccer fan Says:

    @lovesoccer
I kinda disagre with you because when your playing with 10 players you don’t bunch up as much. Mt. Eden could of easyly finish them. The second goal for Hayward high was very questionable.

  13. ReCap Says:

@BKells: Leave it all on the Pitch…DLS Keeper is top notch..hard to get a ball by him and his D-Backs.
Spartans seem to have an answer when the make adjustments and will just frustrate the opponent.

  14. bkells Says:

Thanks ReCap….look forward to seeing tomorrows game.We will see what the Dons can do against the #1 ranked team.Amador has the depth and scoring touch that could give DLS’s defense and goalie some problems.AV needs to score at least 2 goals to win

  15. Fan Says:

Glad to see Foothill Soccer is back on the map. They seem like the team no one looks forward to playing this year. They sure gave DLS a run. I see them upsetting a few teams this year.

  16. Matt Smith Says:

    Alameda 1, Washington 1

  17. JogaBonito Says:

Win or lose, great football is what we want to see from every team

  18. Matt Smith Says:

    Berkeley 3, San Leandro 1

  19. HOMELESS Says:

ALHAMBRA 2 KENNEDY FREMONT 1 FINAL

  20. Scoreboard Says:

Greetings to all. Just wanted to resurface before the Christmas holiday! Still waiting for some of the dust to settle before I make my opinions on the top teams of NCS. Best of luck to all and Happy Holidays!
    100

  21. Matt Smith Says:

@Scoreboard I was just wondering where you’d been the other day.
I was thinking about you, Bam Bam and a few other of the dedicated posters from the first year this blog took off.

  22. Stewie Says:

    GO DOG’s…..who scored for Alhambra?

  23. Feint Says:

    My read on EBAL
SRV and DLS will be in a fight for top spot.
Cal and Amador, then Monte Vista, Foothill, Granada then Livermore. Amador is showing potential to be a spoiler and Cal is showing a double threat on goal scorers. DLS you never really know who will strike, and you typically don’t know which player or players are becoming a dominant factor up front until season is almost over.

  24. JasonL Says:

Acalanes played Ygnacio Valley on Nov 28th when all the boy from both schools are back from the Thanksgiving in the Winter Tournament. The score was close 1-0 Acalanes. Acalanes also play Monte Vista, but on November 24, with just a few starter attending. I believe Acalanes may have lost that one, but the score posted was 2-2. Acalanes also played Richmond on Nov 19, like Monte Vista, Richmond was also a scrimmage. I believe they lost, but again most of the starter was no available for that game.

I believe Acalanes play Dublin tomorrow, #2 in DFAL.

  25. The Sweeper Says:

Tough choice tonight choosing between DLS@AV or SRV@Cal, with each field within 15 minutes of the sweatshop.

I have not seen Cal or DLS this season, and each should be slight favorites tonight. The jury is still out on SRV’s defense which Cal will test to its limits, and AV needs to bring its “A” game top-to-bottom for all 80 minutes to pull off the upset. One mental lapse could decide each match.

I will flip a coin at 5:45pm: heads=AV, tails=Cal. Which match would you select?

    See you at the pitch!

  26. bkells Says:

@The Sweeper….I have not seen Cal nor DLS play yet this year. I will see DLS for first time tonight against AV whom I have seen a few times this year.Based on what I have read, heard and seen the EBAL will be a crap-shot every game each night. There are no weak teams. What I can say about AV is that they have 5-6 key players and tremendous depth amongst the other players that coach Berglin can create a TEAM that will compete with the best in the NCS.Good luck boys and have some fun!

  27. Jules Rimet Says:

    Cal 3 SRV 2

    DLS 2 Amador 1

  28. Matt Smith Says:

We need more predictions… People used to do that all the time.
But I think I waited until playoffs, right?

  29. mudhen Says:

I’m telling you, Hercules Vs.Pinole Valley will be as good as any of those other games.

  30. JogaBonito Says:

Yv 4-0 berean i mean CV at the half

  31. jogabonito Says:

Yv 5-0 Cv 2 minuts into the second half tata

  32. jogabonito Says:

  33. HalaMadrid Says:

@jogabonito what was the final score??

  34. jogabonito Says:

@Halamadrid 6-1 questionable pk given to cv ayala close to a save as replacement keeper

  35. Stalwart Says:

NG-CP high energy game. 0-0 at the half.

  36. Foothill fan Says:

    Halftime, Foothill-1, Granada-1

  37. bkells Says:

  38. JogaBonito Says:

Update on the cp game ?

  39. Stalwart Says:

    NG-CP final 0-0

    Amazing!!

  40. bkells Says:

DLS-1 AV-O Congrats to DLS for taking round 1 win.AV did not have enough…. mediocre play at best.AV could have used Seitz and Walsh in the midfield…their size and grit were missed.Sloppy play by AV led to DLS goal after throw-in.

  41. C Says:

More info Stalwart? Why amazing? Thanks for the report!

  42. soccerman Says:

    Cal 3, SRV 0.

  43. soccerfan Says:

Just saw AV and DLS game. Not impressed with DLS style of play, if you can call it a style… at least in the second half DLS attempted to play something that resembled soccer to make for better viewing, but looked like AV had better ball control and took more shots overall.

  44. SCP Says:

    Hercules 2 Pinole 1

  45. nikessss Says:

    MV 3 Livermore 0

  46. Foothill Fan Says:

    Final, Granada-2, Foothill-1

  47. Juan Pito Says:

DLS is looking strong! Another big test against MV at DLS on thursday at 6, looking forward to that one! Surprised to see Cal handle SRV that handily.

  48. ReCap Says:

AV played tough but was wearing down at the end which resulted in the sloppy play in the back. DLS was able to get the one goal in and tough out a win.
DLS keeper was solid through the the entire game.

  49. Jules Rimet Says:

    Surprised SRV was shutout

  50. Stalwart Says:

I wonder if it’s time to rethink that Northgate non-ranking. They’re 5-1-3 now, I think. Their defense, including Sonnier as goalkeeper, admirably held off a vigorous CP attack tonight. Good football.

  51. SDA Says:

Looks like Dublin caught the reins and are in full stride. With a mostly Junior team, they look to be strong next year and they have some sophomore representation. Looks to me like Dublins got a bright future looking ahead with Fulwilwer coaching. They’re a team to watch out for next year.

  52. bkells Says:

@Sweeper nice picks: DLS over AV and Cal shutting out SRV.What happened in the Cal game?

  53. Nacho Don Says:

@The Sweeper, who won your private coin-toss… which game did you go to? DLS/AV or Cal/SRV?

  54. Matt Smith Says:

    Richmond 1, Albany 0

  55. Jules Rimet Says:

Max is imposing in goal, he has worked on his skill set. It would be good for him to get some quality instruction like at DFC from Coach Henry Faulk from Cal.

  56. Oldfart Says:

    Stalward,

I got a chance to watch Northgate and College Park last night. Even tho the game ended in a tie, it could of easily been 3 or 4 to 0 in favor of College park, who missed a lot of clear chances. Credit Northgate for playing hard and doing all it could to take a tie. They are much better than last year and will be competitive against any team. I don’t believe they should be in the top 15 as they don’t have a quality win.

    Happy Holidays!

  57. Old Hayward high GK Says:

Hayward’s Rigo Castillo started therapy, hopefully gets back soon. Hayward high needs goals

  58. Matt Smith Says:

That’s good news for the Farmers.

  59. Dave Says:

I agree with Stalward, for a 0-0 game that a very intense match. Oldfart, I noticed CP failed to put many shots on target but I feel they were getting desperate. They couldn’t beat Northgate’s defense+goalkeeper and it looked like they were taking pot shots in hopes of slotting one in.

  60. Dave Says:

Also, I agree that Northgate shouldn’t yet be in the top 15 but for a different reason. The teams up there are definitely better than them (at this moment). To say Northgate doesn’t have any quality wins though is an undeserved comment. I’ve seen that team playing their hearts out and their 5-1-3 record doesn’t come without “quality wins”.

  61. Vapors Says:

I believe tonight’s game in MVAL with Mission San Jose vs. Newark will see if Newark can stay strong against very competitive opponents or to see if MSJ has their eyes set on beating the Cougars for the first time in years. Game will be played at Newark @6:00.

P.S. These two teams are tied in the standings.

  62. goalboy Says:

Last night Freedom HS beat Mt. Diablo in a non-league match 7-3. Questionable PK in favor of MD. Should have been 7-2. Jorge Cendejas scored 6 goals for the Falcons. Is this a record for a BVAL team? Pretty amazing. Cendejas has 8 goals in the last 3 games for Freedom (vs. Monte Vista, Granada & Mt. Diablo). The kid is impressive. He recently left the Earthquakes academy.

  63. HOMELESS Says:

    ALHAMBRA AT CAMPOLINDO 6:15 PM

  64. Yellow Jacket Says:

Tennyson at Berkeley at 6pm tonight.

  65. lovesoccer Says:

just watch Hayward take it to Castro Valley it wasn’t even close Hayward dominated the game seen the Hayward coach move some players around they have Luis( Luigi) Castillo he’s tall and lanky great feet work and can fly . he definitely makes a difference. Defense of players better be ready wow Hayward just keep bring player out. very impressive.Hayward 3 Castro valley 1

  66. Feint Says:

    Any update from Campo game?

  67. Berkeley Says:

    Berkeley 6 Tennyson 0

  68. SoccerFan Says:

    Campo 5-0 against Alhambra

  69. Vapors Says:

Newark Memorial 3, Mission San Jose 2
Very interesting game! Mission started off with a 1-0 lead and immediately after Mission’s goalkeeper got a red and was switched with a defender leaving Mission with 10 players on the field in mid 1st half. A great penalty shot was scored tying the game up! Then Mission got awarded a penalty kick, yet missed it by a hair. The half ended at 1-1. The 2nd half was in favor of Newark with 2 goals giving them the lead. Mission returned with 1 goal themselves with a man down in the late half. Wasn’t enough for them. Great game.

  70. Vapors Says:

I wonder how Mission would’ve done with 11 men the whole game. especially their keeper.

  71. CNSoccer Says:

Heard Acalanes beat Dublin 3 – 1 tonight.

  72. The Sweeper Says:

Nacho Don #52, the coin flip was heads so I went to the DLS at AV match. DLS won 1-0.

DLS controlled play each half after AV’s energy level declined around the 15th minute. It is very difficult to play 80 quality minutes, and even harder against a quality opponent. Shot quality was not that different, but too many opportunities were off frame, while both keepers allowed unchallenged rebounds.

    The score was appropriate.

  73. Matt Smith Says:

    The scores I have…

    DFAL

    Campo 5, Alhambra 0
    Acalanes 3, Dublin 1
    Dougherty 3, Miramonte 2

    MVAL

    Newark 3, MSJ 2

    WACC

    Berkeley 6, Tennyson 0
    San Leandro 1, Arroyo 0
Mt. Eden 2, San Lorenzo 2
    Hayward 3, Castro Valley 1

  74. The Sweeper Says:

    Bkells #51,

Thanks for reading between the lines. I am with you: what the heck happened at Cal? Where are those incomparable Grizzlies’ fans? My guess is that at least one goal was on a 50:50 ball in the scoring area…an old story.

BTW, MSJ and Northgate are on my must see list after their latest matches. CP is for real, and they put the ball on frame from everywhare, so the NG keeper must have been on game. And what was the story on the MSJ keeper getting a red card? Let me guess: a “helpless” receiver and helmet to helmet contact…oh wait, that is the other “football” game, DOH!

  75. The Sweeper Says:

    Mr. Smith,

What’s on tap Thursday in the East Bay world of soccer? And what is under the tree for Miss Idaho?

BTW, Grandma Sweeper turned 91 today, and she said “What’s the big deal with Leo scoring ‘only’ 90?”

See you at the pitch and have a Merry Christmas!

  76. mudhen Says:

    Alameda 1 Piedmont 0

  77. high school soccer Says:

looking foward for pitt vs yv on saturday

  78. Matt Smith Says:

@Sweeper I am at DLS Thursday. Where will you be my friend?
That is great about Grandma Sweeper! And I have Miss Idaho well taken care of :)

@High School Soccer That match Saturday will be entertaining. I will be there.

  79. Feint Says:

Fast & Furious the film sequel. MV at DLS tonight. Team with most composed aggression should win.

  80. Itsabob Says:

Alhambra got rolled last night, might be a good idea to bring up some youngsters to reenforce the bench and crank up the work rate at practice during break.

  81. Nacho Don Says:

    @Vapors #69
Agreed! MSJ w/ 11 would be good to watch vs Newark. Too bad, but looks like they made a game of it. MSJ seems to be very close, only losing by one goal a few times lately (Newark, Granada, Amador). Makes you think they will put it all together soon.

    @The Sweeper #71
I was hoping you saw Cal/SRV… Your coin toss didn’t go “my way”. Sounds like DLS/AV was a good match. How did DLS score? i.e. Would Grandma have approved of the goal? haha!

  82. jogabonito Says:

is it the same pitt that yv beat 4-0 last year? has pitt improved?

  83. LCapello Says:

AV vs Granada tonight in EBAL action. Can the Dons rebound after their less than stellar performance against DLS?Granada beat a good Foothills team the other night 2-1.Can anyone provide insight about Granada’s win?

  84. old soccer head Says:

    Sweeper #73,
re Cal-SRV game: the first 2 goals came after a series of passes while the 3rd was scored on a breakaway starting at mid-field and down the left flank.

However, the game was prolly closer than the score indicates. SRV may have been flat following recent good tournament showings and/or not prepared for competetiveness of EBAL play (this was their league opener). SRV only had one good shot on frame- a long-distance blast that required an excellent save from the SRV keeper. Still, if that shot had gone in, game may have been quite different.

  85. Itsabob Says:

Being flat is a possible death warrant in EBAL…you cant afford it. Not with the level of competition within the league.

  86. old soccer head Says:

    Itsabob #84
You are so right. EBAL teams must be prepared to battle in every single game; we’ll see how it goes tonite.

Correction to entry 83: the excellent save was by the Cal keeper, Derek Wilcox.

    @ Jogabonito
I don’t think Pitt had all their comp players yet when they played YV last year.

  88. 11v11 Says:

I believe even if they did last year, Yv had the upper hand on PITT.

Pitt is good and has a great coach , but its always up to the players.

Why find excuses when everyone knew YV was better last year.

Saturday’s match up should be a great one. If i had to predict…

Whom ever scores first loses the game…
    Good luck to both teams.

  89. Vapors Says:

@Sweeper #73 – The red card was initiated on a one on one with the keeper situation and the keeper kicked out his legs on the shot (kinda like a split) and the Newark player ran over his leg and “dramatically” fell. Ref called it as a “dangerous play” even after the shot was taken. A very bad call by the ref, especially that the MSJ backup keeper is currently injured with a “shattered pinky” and as well on vacation. Tough luck for MSJ.

  90. soccerman Says:

my take on the cal/srv game was that cal should have had a few more goals. Cal controled most of the game even though it took halfway through the second half for goal #2. SRV has some talent along with speed and some good defenders, however it was one of those games that they could not get things going. The upper v shot by #6 that was denied by the Cal keeper was about all SRV could generate. On the other hand Cal missed a close header early first half and #16 missed a 8 yard open goal perfect set ball. Also Cal was on the verge of breaking past the last defender for most of the second half. Cals #17 did a good job conrolling the ball up top and Grixti was everywhere winning just about every battle. also Cals #5 looks to be a huge threat with tons of speed and skill on the ball. Cals no name defense along with their 6’5″ keeper are looking pretty good.
I do know that SRV will show up at home, so Cal best be prepared.

  91. The Sweeper Says:

Matt, I will be at Foothill to see who rebounds better from an 0-1 EBAL start. Not having seen the Falcons, and with the sweatshop located in the area, it is the easy choice. BTW, an 0-2 start looms for one of these two, so the pucker factor will be high. I give the Wolves a slight edge tonight.

Don Nacho #80, the coin actually landed on its edge, but it was pointing toward AV, go figure. DLS scored after a lull for a throw-in (with the flippin’ AV DJ announcer playing annoying music bits, “Just turn it off so we can hear the players and coaches talk”), a couple of short passes and a medium struck “grounder” from the left side of the 10-yard arc to the far post with the AV keeper not quite covering the far post. My first reaction was, “Did that just go in? That must have been well placed because the pace was not that fast.” Ironically, AV barely missed wide on a similar shot with 7 or so minutes to go, and the keeper did not have the post covered.

OSH #83, if the Cal save prevented the first or second goal, you are so right how a match can swing differently.

BTW, Pitt@YV 3pm Saturday is a holiday haven between mall-stops.

  92. Matt Smith Says:

    Keep us posted, Sweeper.

  93. Matt Smith Says:

Oh ya, and for Foothill it could be an 0-3 start in EBAL play (SRV still has a game in hand from the Granada rescheduling). So a promising start would be a long memory if they start 0-3.

I’ll keep you guys posted from DLS.

  94. The Sweeper Says:

Vapors #88, thanks for the ‘color’ on the red card. There was an epidemic of poorly pulled red cards a few years back and I am loathe to immediate ejection from a match if there is no intent to harm an opponent. 10 on 11 is a huge penalty.

On the flip side, don’t get me going about repeated contact with keepers that does not even draw a warning, much less a yellow.

  95. Matt Smith Says:

Checking in from DLS. Almost time for kickoff.

  96. Matt Smith Says:

0-0 here at DLS, about 20 minutes in.

  97. The Sweeper Says:

1-1 at Foothill after 20. SRV D mistake in 15th and FHS keeper mistake in 18th.

  98. Matt Smith Says:

    Scoreless at halftime at DLS.

Not a ton of chances for either side, but very entertaining soccer. Up and down. Very crisp and physical when need be.

  99. The Sweeper Says:

2-2 at Foothill half. Segosa nets his 2nd goal in the 39th on a nice breakaway and laser shot from 25+ using the crossbar. The Wolves equalize 30 seconds later on a free kick – header – header – goal combo. Now that’s entertainment. Perhaps the first to 5 wins…

  100. Matt Smith Says:

AV and Granada 0-0 at half.

  101. Matt Smith Says:

Still 0-0 at DLS with 20 to go. Still entertaining.

  102. Matt Smith Says:

    Still scoreless. 10 to go.

  103. The Sweeper Says:

    2-2 with 18 left

  104. Matt Smith Says:

0-0 with three minutes left. The pace is frenetic.

  105. Matt Smith Says:

    Scoreless draw at DLS.

  106. mudhen Says:

You guys have this EBAL thing going , which is your right, I guess, But I have to say that ALL of the EBAL schools are really boring to watch. It’s pretty simple really, they all play like Italians, which may win (around here anyway)
but is about as exciting to watch as paint dry.
I have watched Hayward, Hercules , Alameda, Pinole,Berkeley, and even Arroyo play exciting, fast paced soccer that MOVES and lose or no, displays more art than anything I’ve seen on the far side of the hills.

  107. mudhen Says:

Vapors, when a keeper does that BIG OL’ LEG IN THE AIR move to intimidate players , he is setting him(or her) self up for a red card every time. You are NOT

  108. mudhen Says:

  109. bkells Says:

Hey Mudhen….what do you mean EBAL play like Italians?

  110. The Sweeper Says:

    2-2 final at Foothill

  111. mudhen Says:

It’s called catenaccio. Look it up. Yes it wins , but good God is it boring. It’s defend defend and wait for a mistake. Barcelona does NOT play this way , Inter Milan does.

  112. bkells Says:

    Av-1 Granada-0
Coach Berglin makes adjustments with 25 minutes left.A beauty goal by #7 Ty Pangia on a corner kick from Scott Simpson with about 6 minutes left in game.Defense of AV was solid… only allowing a few shots on net .Nice win Dons!

  113. bkells Says:

Mudhen….most of Inter Milan’s players are not Italian look it up!

  114. JogaBonito Says:

Yv with a 2-0 win over a tough grass field at Mount. Goals scored by #10 Damian and #9 Ayala.

  115. eL Pata Says:

Italian = highly organized defense with a magician in the mid (baggio, pirlo) looking to pull strings and release counter.

Spanish (now) = crisp passing triangles looking to break you open

Brazil = pure joy on the ball with flair and ( when winning a world cup) a defensive mid that will rip your head off

Germany = technical machine with a keeper that towers.

England = what book did Trevor brooking read this month?

All high school soccer = learning who you are as a person/player and trying to do the right thing in he right moment.

  116. SCP Says:

    De Anza 1 Hercules 2

  117. Itsabob Says:

DLS was stagnant and disjointed up front..lost control of ball at midfield. MV nothing special but scrappy. Shots that were presented defiantly advantage to DLS.

  118. Shinguard Says:

Good luck to the Spartans as they prepare for the SoCal HS Classic as they will be heading to San Diego on the 26th.

    Merry Christmas
Peace and Good Cheer to All you soccer fans.

Champions League MUFC draws Real Madrid
    and FC Bayern draws Arsenal
TWO of my favorite teams and they both wear Red. :)

  119. Ball Don't Lie Says:

    Matt,

What was your takeaway of the DLS-MV match? Was one team more aggressive than the other or was the draw the right result? Was play even or was it more on one side of the field? Thanks for the updates during the game!

  120. Vapors Says:

#106 @mudhen I agree with you. Yet, maybe my description wasn’t accurate enough for you. He tried to stop the shot by kicking out his legs, this is once the ball is shot. The Newark player had momentum and he ran forward and tripped over the leg while it was already down on the ground.

  121. Juan Pito Says:

DLS game was entertaining tonight. Two top teams with a very even matchup, entertaining soccer no matter what the style.

  122. Matt Smith Says:

@Ball Don’t Lie I thought that the play was very even, and that a draw was the fair result. I would have felt bad for the losing team if a goal had ben scored. The play went back and forth and I’d say possession was close to 50/50 and it was divided equally between sides of the field.
I think DLS probably had a couple of more good chances, but other than that, it was very even. 50/50 balls were even, both back lines stayed discipline.
The one take away is that I think Ben Panconi was the man of the match. He played great.

  123. Matt Smith Says:

    To Hercules fans…

Maxpreps says they lost their first game to Kennedy-Fremont 1-0, but I thought it was a 0-0 draw. Can somebody please shed some light on this for me?

  124. The Sweeper Says:

The Sweeper is quite amused by the EBAL = Italy-style futball discussion.

I do not agree, and considering the EBAL domination in the NCS playoffs and championships (boys and girls), the facts do not support these claims, blah, blah, blah.

Ironically, on Tuesday I met a ‘youngish’ looking gentleman at half time of the DLS@AV match. He had sat nearby during the 1st half of the match with no interaction. At the end of the half he asked me if I knew the teams. I pointed out that the green uniformed team was DLS, a storied American football private school, with a ‘recently’ dominating futball program (#1 in NorCal for multiple years), and the white uniformed team and ‘up-and-comer’.

He introduced himself as a youth soccer coach from Rome (U16 boys) recently transplanted to the East Bay, running a woodworking craftsman shop in P-town, go figure. I kid you not.

Suffice to say, during the second half we discussed the quality of play and he was quite ‘appalled’ by the looseness of play by DLS (wrong by my take) and the ‘lack of organization’ by AV (mis-understood by my take), a ‘typical’ Italian response by my take.

We debated the details for the last 30 minutes of the 2nd half, and agreed that DLS would score ‘soon’ which the Spartans did.

By no means is this a criticism of either team, but he was adamant that the play upon the field, while entertaining, was nothing that he taught in Roma.

    Ciao baby…

  125. The Sweeper Says:

Follow-up comments to SRV@Football match: The 0-0 second half of the 2-2 final result was just as challenging and entertaining as the first half. BUT, the match momentum was stunted by a rash of yellow cards in the 2nd half, probably 4+ for the Falcons and 2+ for the Wolves. The match started at the same time as the other EBAL matches, but ended 10 minutes later due to the 2nd half yellow card delays.

That said, SRV controlled the pace of play, but Foothill pushed back all match long, and both keepers were flawless in the 2nd half. The result was appropriate.

    See you at the pitch.

  126. BarneyBarnyard Says:

Mudhen, I think the word you are struggling to find to describe the EBAL teams is “Disciplined”. DeLaSalle is the most disciplined team out there. Most EBAL teams play a very nice style of soccer. What they don’t typically do is give away cheap goals. When you play this style, albeit in your words boring, you are failing to see the big picture. This is much tougher to do. The high school coach gets a new crop of kids every year. Probably only gets a few weeks to get these players to buy in to a particuliar style or system. Then the kids put it to task. Maybe other leagues just don’t have the players to do this with. Maybe the EBAL has a larger pool of club players to choose from. I don’t know. I just think it’s funny to read a comment from someone who calls winning “boring”. Sour grapes, probably. In my humble opinion, I feel it’s a better and cleaner style. I love to see how hard they work on defense. You really have to love the game to take such pride in being a destroyer and not a creator. That is what defenders do. Destroy all that the creators are trying to build. Maybe if more non EBAL coaches preached a little more defense instead of a more free flowing south american style or spanish style of play, they might get to the top of the mountain. Oh yeah mudhen, I have never met a kid that said “Gee our style was so much prettier than theirs. Why did we lose?” Winning isn’t everything. But it sure is a heck of lot more fun than losing. Go ask DeLaSalle. I think they have a ton of fun and taken some pretty cool pictures with medals around their necks. Oh yeah, and I doubt any of them could care less if they looked boring.

  127. BarneyBarnyard Says:

BTW, I am not a DLS parent. Just a jealous admirer.

  128. BarneyBarnyard Says:

Oh yeah, and the proud parent of a Defender (a.k.a. Destroyer)!

  129. 11v11 Says:

    Jogabonito—

Yv played on a very difficult field , but the goal that #10 Damian scored was an auto goal by a mount defender.

    Clearing up some facts.

  130. bkells Says:

Mudhen….have you ever been to Italy to watch 16 year olds play for their city rep teams. They are definitely not boring. For starters the game is religion to the people. The whole town shows up for the games. There is creativity up front and in the midfield, defense is vicious in such a way that if the techniques were utilized in the EBAL entire defenses would be ejected from games. And of course the goalies are briliiant!

  131. Matt Smith Says:

I got the Hercules thing figured out, not that anybody was wondering ;)

A lot of games on the schedule tonight, and most of them involve teams that play with the ball at their feet and like to keep it on the pitch. Should be interesting to see how the rain effects the results tonight.

  132. Stewie Says:

  133. EBALDad Says:

“most of them involve teams that play with the ball at their feet and like to keep it on the pitch”……hmmm
is this Matt’s editorial commentary on the “Italien” debate?
    :)

  134. Mudhen Says:

Man, I just KNEW I could rattle your cages with a catenaccio comment. Sweeper, what makes you think that I don’t know that true CATA style has not been played for years. BUT the style of play that Italy is noted for , even still, is overpowering defense and quick counter on mistakes. And DIVING TOO!! And yes, winning speaks for itself, but I will again say it; If the boys from the less advantaged areas had the same level of club and other training as the good boys and girls of the more privileged areas, I have no doubt that a different tune would be sung –SOMETIMES.

P.S. Don’t think that even mighty DLS. is above flopping . 2 years ago I watched them flop like tuna on the deck near the end of the (I believe) semi-final against Cal, with the pitiful ref crew buying it.
And no I’m not a DLS hater. I often go to their games, and San Ramon too.I just think that they all play more or less the same.

  135. bkells Says:

Well done Stewie….no offense I am of Irish/English descent.I still like the tactical minds of the Italians like Giovanni Trapattoni.Irelands futball team is competitive in each game since “Traps” took over

  136. bkells Says:

    Other than the Germany drubbing!

  137. Stewie Says:

This is all in fun…never take it serious. Every team has a style of play, smooth flow or aggressive. With the High Schools you truly don’t see good play till mid point as the teams start to jell. So much depends on the talent that is available to a team and then the coaching staff that can put it all together.
PS Germans have 7 teams that are in European cup play..that is a new record.

  138. Shinguard Says:

Bottom line with soccer is you have to play a well rounded game. All aspects O & D & GK and in the box play and from grace to raw physicality, discipline mixed with creativity and yes some acting skill all help produce wins. If you become to one dimensional you tend to come up short. That is what’s fun about De La Salle you are never sure who may ram the ball into the net, it might be pretty or ugly but bottom line the ball made it into the goal.

  141. Matt Smith Says:

Checking in from Union City where Logan and Newark are about to kickoff.

  142. Stewie Says:

Whatever Conference Notre Dame Football goes to. :)

EBAL…Then teams like Newark, Pitt, Richmond and YV to name a few programs that are consistent and show passion and respect for the game. Don’t get me wrong lots of other good teams around but as leagues go EBAL.
EBAL is a physical and aggressive league..big difference between physical and reckless, which ruins the game.

  143. Salesians trooper Says:

    Salesians 0 – 0 Richmond, at Richmond

  144. Matt Smith Says:

Is that a final score from Richmond?

  145. Salesians trooper Says:

@ Matt Smith yes, final score. Also, the game was held at Salesians, not Richmond.

  146. Matt Smith Says:

@Salesians Trooper if you know Salesian’s overall record, can you let me know? I’m not sure if what I have is accurate.

Great result for Salesian. The mystery of Richmond continues.

  147. Matt Smith Says:

Newark and Logan 0-0 with 18 minutes left.

  148. Yellow Jacket Says:

    6-1 Berkeley over O’dowd

  156. Ball Don't Lie Says:

    Matt,

Curious what your view was of the Logan-Newark match? Was 0-0 the appropriate result? Also, just a suggestion, but maybe you could list this blog page at the end of your newspaper write-ups so that maybe others will help with reporting scores, etc.

  157. Matt Smith Says:

@Ball Don’t Lie I will ask the people in charge if that is something that can be done, for sure…

As far as the game goes, I think Newark looked a bit more dangerous tonight. They looked good moving the ball, but maybe rushed a little bit in taking shots. They were a little over anxious maybe and took some shots they probably didn’t need to.
Logan did a great job defensively, stayed organized and calm during any Newark threats. I think 0-0 was probably fair tonight. The two teams were pretty even.

  158. lovesoccer Says:

Hayward beat Piedmont and controled the hole game they were about to break the game wide open but the game was called do to the field.Hayward 1 piedmont 0

  159. Matt Smith Says:

These are scores from tonight/tomorrow that I am looking for…

    Encinal v. Tennyson
    San Leandro v. San Lorenzo
    Las Lomas v. Miramonte
    El Cerrito v. Freedom
    Liberty v. Dublin
    Salesian v. Albany

Also, I am really not getting many TCAL scores. If you guys can please help, that would be great. Let me know of anything you know.

  160. MVAL Alumni Says:

    @Lovesoccer

What game were you watching? Hayward’s goal was on accident and not even a shot. It deflected off a player and went in. Look at the stats. Piedmont held a 9-1 shot ratio in the first half and 6-3 in the second before the game was suspended, not called. Hayward could only dump the ball because of great pressure by the front four of Piedmont. Their midfield played outstanding. It was a back and forth game. Hayward’s keeper had to come up big quite a few times to stop Piedmont from putting the ball in the back of the net. It was a great game to watch. Hayward style of play was dump and chase, Piedmont possessed more often than not.

  161. MVAL Alumni Says:

    @Lovesoccer

Playing the first 15 to 20 minutes in your own final third is not controlling the game by the way.

  162. Matt Smith Says:

I’m pretty sure the Hayward/Piedmont game was called. In high school, once you’ve played more than a half, it can be an official game.
I’ve been told it is a 1-0 win for Hayward.

  163. Salesian trooper Says:

@ Matt Smith Salesian is (1-1-1)

If berkeley was so good why they had trouble vs mt eden? Mt. Eden is undefeated so far in league.

  166. Matt Smith Says:

@Soccer Fan I think Berkeley had trouble because Mt. Eden is a very good team, so they deserve credit. And I’m sure playing on the smaller grass pitch was an adjustment as well.

  167. albany cougars Says:

Here is albanys record so far in league play.

I think you guys play each other today, so keep me posted.

  169. berkeleyfan Says:

I attended the Mt. Eden- Berkeley game. No excuses but berkeley only had 20 mins. to warm up and the grass pitch was very poor. But credit goes to Mt. Eden. They have solid defenders.

    Matt,
Do you think Berkeley can make a long run in NCS?

  170. bkells Says:

@Shinguard thanks for link…looks like some excellent talent on some very good teams.DLS will have to bring their A game in order to advance .

  171. Matt Smith Says:

Headed to YV with Sweeper. Should be a doozy.

  172. goalboy Says:

Freedom beat El Cerrito 5-0. This Jorge Cendejas kid keeps giving impressive performances. In this game he scored 2 goals and had 3 assists. That gives him a total of 10 goals in the last 4 games that he’s played. Freedom seems to be picking it up as of late. El Cerrito didn’t have a lot to offer in this game, but much was due to the Falcons display of good discipline, solid defense, and their mids and strikers playing well together. I saw some good 1-2 touch passing in the middle of the field. We’ll see how they do against a solid St. Mary’s team. That should be a good test. I believe they face each other in a non-league game the first week of January.

  173. Cooper Says:

El Cerrito did not have their game today. A couple players missing and a couple players out of town for the holidays really affected them. I attended the Salesian vs El Cerrito game and the Albany vs. El Cerrito game and they were well organized. Got very unlucky vs Albany at the end. But El Cerrito has a couple key players that is the base of their team and players you should take a look at, #4,#8,#9,#10, and #11.

  174. goalboy Says:

Anyone know the score of the Pitt-YV game?

  175. Rey2517 Says:

Does anyone know the results of Alameda vs Castro Valley?

  176. Cooper Says:

El Cerrito did not have their game today. A couple players missing due to injuries and a couple players out of town for the Holidays really affected them today. I attended the El Cerrito vs. Salesian game and the Albany vs. El Cerrito game and they were well organized. They dominated the Salesian game and won 5-0 and they got very unlucky vs. Albany towards the end with a match that could’ve gone either way. But El Cerrito has a couple key players that is the base of the team and that you should take a look at. They are #4,#8,#9,#10,and #11.

  177. Matt Smith Says:

YV and Pitt just ended 1-1

  178. goalboy Says:

    Thanks for the score Matt!

  179. Matt Smith Says:

It was an entertaining game. The rain effected the play, but it was still good.

    St. Mary’s beat St. Joe’s 10-0 today.

  180. Matt Smith Says:

@Berkeleyfan I will be addressing that very question in my new notebook which I hope to have up tonight :)

  181. Matt Smith Says:

@Rey2517 Castro Valley beat Alameda 3-1.

  182. mudhen Says:

Beating somebody 10–0(if that really was the final score) is an example of really pitiful gawd-awful sportsmanship, and the players and coach of St. Mary’s should be ashamed of themselves.
One defeats an opponent, not humiliates them.

  183. Matt Smith Says:

@mudhen Normally I think that is true, but I know Sal from St. Mary’s well and he probably had all his backups in and had guys playing in unfamiliar spots, and it’s hard to tell your kids to stop playing. Especially those who don’t play often.

  184. 2000ortega Says:

Mval alumni I have no idea of what game you we’re watching musta been a dream because there was no doubt that Hayward control the whole game and the midfield controlled the whole thing 6 ,3 ratio come on also a header not a shot that’s a joke ask coach they were sucking wind defensively Hayward was working them please.

  185. mudhen Says:

No excuse. You tell them to play triangles and STOP trying to score . Period.

  186. mudhen Says:

Alameda plays tough defense so beating them 3 nil says something.

  187. Matt Smith Says:

@Sweeper It feels good to get home and put some dry clothes on after sitting in that torrential downpour. Thanks for the company today and shuttling from and to BART in that sweet ride. Happy holidays!

  188. lovesoccer Says:

Hi mval alumni first off I would like to say no disrespect to Piedmont I do not know anybody from Hayward or Piedmont I’m just a scout and I do know a lot about soccer you’re saying is 6/3 ratio that is just not true in the first half Hayward had 9 corner kicks 5 shot on goal 1 shot definitely went over the goal line. referee was not in position. also header is a shot last time I checked. Piedmont had 6 corner kicks 3 shots on goal
2 shots came from 25 yards out you will not score from that far out. in regards to the mid field come on hayward mid control the game. but that’s not to say pm I didn’t hang in there

Hi mval alumni first off I would like to say no disrespect to Piedmont I do not know anybody from Hayward or Piedmont I’m just a scout and I do know a lot about soccer you’re saying is 6/3 ratio that is just not true in the first half Hayward had 9 corner kicks 5 shot on goal 1 shot definitely went over the goal line. referee was not in position. also header is a shot last time I checked. that would have made it 2 to nothing Hayward at the half. Piedmont had 6 corner kicks 3 shots on goal
2 shots came from 25 yards out you will not score from that far out. in regards to the mid field come on hayward mid control the game. but that’s not to say Piedmont didn’t hang in there because they did hang in there. again not trying to disrespect nobody I’m just giving my opinion. good luck on your season.

@cooper Freedom had 3 starters out due to injuries and 2 out on vacation today as well. I’m pretty sure #’s 8, 9 & 11 for EC played in today’s game.

  191. Cooper Says:

@Goalboy Don’t get me wrong, Freedom looked very solid. What I was trying to imply is that it probably would’ve been a more interesting game if EC would’ve have their full team. Freedom has a couple key players out there that make a difference. What can you say of #’s 8, 9 and 11??

Yv vs pittsburg was a very physical and intertaning game, made second half, game could of gone eaither way, rain may of sped up the tempo and physicality but on the field were two teams that wanted the win. i see two very ambitious teams that could go far in ncs…. Impressed by pittsburg over all, last season i attended their 0-4 defeat to yv either pitt has improved its game and talent or some of yv’s talent has graduated… These are the type of games that pump up the fans on both sides.

@mudhen @matt smith Running up the score? What is this? 8 year olds playing recreational?

  194. goalboy Says:

@cooper OK, yes I agree. Those 3 players have good skill. I was especially impressed with #11. Good leader, has the ability to organize the midfield and good vision, just didn’t have a go to guy up on top. I was also really impressed with Freedom’s #9 Cendejas and #10 Lopez. I was told to keep an eye on Cendejas and honestly he did impress me. He stands out. I wish both teams good luck. Good disciplined players on both teams. Both Porras (EC) and Acevedo (Freedom) are good coaches with respectful backgrounds.

I think berkeley and mt eden are one of the hardest team this year. There both undefeated league wise. Is ganna be a good game when they play again.
