California’s Haley had double-double in upset of Monte Vista

California High senior Shane Haley had 21 points and 11 rebounds in the Grizzlies’ 45-41 upset of Monte Vista on Wednesday in the teams’ East Bay Athletic League openers.

The Grizzlies (4-5, 1-0) outscored the host Mustangs (8-3, 0-1) 17-9 in the fourth quarter.  Monte Vista is ranked fifth in the Bay Area News Group East Bay Boys Basketball poll.

California juniors Matt Lorenz and CJ Cornwell had six points apiece. Junior Josh Ip made a clutch 3-pointer in the fourth quarter to give the Grizzlies the lead for good, according to the California team website.

Grizzlies junior Jordan Farrell had key defensive rebounds down the stretch.

    Nice job by Shane and the Grizz last night in upsetting heavily favored MV on the road, holding them to just 41 points. Haley, Lorenz and Cornwell were all also on the Grizz’ football team, as was guard Blake Guardino.
