So is that (8)eight teams from the state or is that (8)teams from the Norcal section/ So Cal section each?
in other words you get
Odowd,St Mary's Stockton,Mitty and Miramonte from the north and you get Mater Dei, Windward, Long Beach and Serra in the southern section?

So some higher ranked teams this year would not be eligible for the open if its there first time in a while?

There is specific criteria a team must meet in order to be one of the up to eight teams selected for the Open Division. (Up to eight is a key note, they don't have to invited the full eight teams.)

* Win two consecutive section titles.
* Qualify for the regional championships for at least three of the past four seasons.
* Qualify for the regional championships after having reached the state or regional final the previous season.
* Be ranked in the state top 10 by Cal-Hi Sports, Calpreps or MaxPreps in early March for two straight seasons, including the current season.

Teams can request to be in the Open Division, but teams that meet the criteria and are selected cannot opt out. Since Miramonte has made the NorCal playoffs the past three years, they are technically eligible for the Open, but wouldn't necessarily be selected.

How does the open division work in California? Do they invite teams based upon the record and ranking? If you are invited do you have to play in the open bracket?

A team like Miramonte is good enough to compete with everyone accept BOD who is also in the Div 3 and might win in if they are not in the open bracket.

How does this work?
